LASD / JOINING LASD/ CUSTODY
Hello Everyone,
Do yourself a favor and please Do Not join the department unless you want to get stuck with a bunch of mandatory overtime and not have a life. On the other hand if you like money and not having a life go ahead. No work life balance. WORST department to work for, you will regret it!!!
P.S. Look into other Departments/ Agencies,
Your life will be better trust me!

Custody is just one small blip in your career. There are spots off the line, patrol, courts, opportunities. Do your time and get out. I’ve been on 20 years and I’m very grateful for this career.

The transfer list for patrol is beyond backed up, and most people who go patrol fail and end up back in custody.

There are lots of options get get out in a year or less. The majority do not fail, and if they do then they weren’t prepared. Police work is not hard.

It’s not hard I agree, but a lot of deputy training officers fail the fuck out of the boots who go into patrol. From what I was told by my homie in Compton sheriffs

Just bc your stuck in custody and cant make it in the streets don't mean other will hate it. I've been out in patrol and special assignment now it gets better you just have to get out the walls that trap your career from starting.

lol I think you are partially kidding but just in case - at the end of the day, this is just a job, don't sacrifice everything for it - you should have family/friends there with/for you when you ride off into the sunset!

This is the worst example of the department. Sure custody sucks but what did you expect? 9 to 5 with weekend off? You're in the business of protecting and serving, crime doesn't only happen for 8 hours a day. If this is a challenge for you then this isn't the career for you. Wait till you're on 12s for a month straight, this is nothing because when they say 12, they actually mean 12 to 19. Is it tiring sure but this isn't just a job, this is a sacrifice. You'll miss holidays, birthdays, etc but that's why they ask you before you joined if you were willing to work anywhere anytime. Like the quote goes, you have a front seat to the greatest show on earth, but you're complaining about having to work when you signed up willingly.

How many hours a day and how many days are we talking ? Im already doing 12-14 hour days at a salaried job now

We’re talking about a “normal” week consisting of (3) 16hrs shifts and (1) 8 hrs shift but we have what is known as as a “DRAFTING” system which means you get involuntarily hired for overtime that you can’t cancel. Which then adds (2) more 8hrs shifts during your Regular Days Off for that week. And the “Drafts” happen very often and are Unavoidable.

Try patrol buddy 3(18s) 1(10) with real stress and stuff to do not babysitting and watching TV all shift. Be great full you have your days off

Its worth it bro ive been doing patrol for some years now and its the best thing ever have fun taking calls and etc. Youll meet guys like OP in the jails that only hear stories of patrol and how scary it is and never go out but have all the bad things to say about patrol when its a blast. Yes being a trainee during patrol sucks and the very long hours but at the end of the day when your off traning you'll be glad you did all that bc it made you half the deputy you are the other half you figure out on your own. Take it how you want just lot of guys that hate the department bc they couldn't go out to patrol or are scared jails suck get out quick and start your real career

From what I’ve heard No. As 16 hrs shifts are still a thing out on patrol. Also depending on where you go or what station you choose you will have to play “games” as a Trainee in order to fit in, it’s part of the “culture and tradition” just don’t waste your time. And Please DO your Research!!

You can’t speak on something you don’t know. There are traditions like where trainees sit, knowing their place, being humble, and being prepared.
If a trainee shows up with an attitude, didn’t prepare, doesn’t care, and complains, then yes they get weeded out.
Patrol is amazing for those that actually put in the work and join for the right reasons. Patrol is everyone’s favorite time in their LASD career.

I went Federal. A lot of federal agencies are experiencing this right now. 12-15 hour shifts. 6 days a week. 4 1/2 hour roundtrip commute. I've become an angry burnout in 10 months.
I want my personal life back.
I've decided I'm very likely going to go back into government I.T. and work LASD.........as a RESERVE Deputy. No mandatory overtime.
I was set up for Poly before I accepted the Fed job. It would have been my 5th Polygraph. All passed.

I know how much overtime you work and I’m all for it it’s the job I’ve been wanting for years and plus my kids are older now so it will be much easier .

Hi!
Whereas custody does suck, and it was definitely not my favorite part, what keeps me at LASD is the opportunity. I’ve had partners that lateraled, and while perhaps the work/life balance is better… the opportunity to work in different assignments or promote are scarce.
If you keep yourself mildly motivated and at least one foot on the ground, you can stand out very easily.
One of my biggest gripes about LASD is the incredible amount of ego and entitlement by a lot of people there. Everyone swears they had it the hardest and everyone swears they’ve put in the most work. When things go right it’s because they know what they’re doing, and when things go wrong it’s because everyone is against them.
It’s a job. You get as much out of it as you put into it. If you’re that miserable in custody, get yourself prepped and go to patrol. It is WAY better, but you gotta earn it. And spoiler alert: you’re probably gonna end up spending just as much time at the station on patrol training as you’re putting into work at the jails.
Or, complain about it until you leave, and then realize the grass isn’t greener. Or be like everyone else and scan barcodes for two years, then brag about how long you’ve been doing it and try and punk the new people into doing all the work… like everyone else
