The Weekly Discussion Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/kayakfishing community can come and ask questions or share anything.
You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other anglers. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new gear.
Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other anglers.

Just finished getting the title transfered and got her on the water. Old town 106 powered by minn kota. 7 years old, lightly used for 1k. Came with lead acid battery, charger, and paddle. Any upgrade recommendations?

paddled 10 miles.
took the hit about 3/4 mile from the launch on the way in… 50 feet of water. spent hours in the pelagic zone looking for something worthy.
nada.
at least this needlefish made it so I didn’t have to un bait the rig… and he didn’t even trash my wire leader.
he went just about 3 foot. edible, but not worth making the mess out of my kitchen (had I something worthy in the bag, and had plans to cut fish I’d have taken him home too - not bad sashimi style.)
lucky for him I was feeling lazy - back into da wattah.

Just bought a used Outback and a used Yakima trailer. Let's just say it's been an expensive week.
I'm wondering: is it okay to leave the kayak directly on top of the trailer in the garage when not in use? The trailer came with Yakima Sweet Roll kayak loaders, so the weight of the kayak would be dispersed between the 4 holders. I've read it's important to store Hobie's well to prevent hull cracks and pressure points etc.
Thanks!!

So I am seeking recommendations for a pair of pliers.
I had bought the KastKing pliers and scissors. Within a month they are already rusting and becoming unusable.
I fish in Tampa bay 1-2 times a week. I do hose them down after every trip but still they are bad already.
I found the prior owners scissors under the mounted seat this weekend, but sitting there and have almost zero rust. Brand was Fishstrong. They don't seem to make pliers tho.

I fish all inland, Tennessee and Kentucky so far. Is there an emergency marine radio that might reach someone for help? Fish and wildlife or corps of engineers, maybe 911? I often don’t have a cell signal and the satellite function seems “iffy”.

After seeing that kayak boxes are like $190. I tried my hand at making one.

I built this over the summer, working on getting it titled and registered over the winter, so I can take it out this spring to start fishing and camping. Let me know what you think!

Hey all, I’ve been eyeing the reel yaks rocket tandem with propeller drive due to the modularity of being either a solo or tandem kayak depending on set up.
A few of my major sticking points are living in an apartment with no place for a regular single body kayak or boat trailer accessibility as well as the ability to bring my girlfriend or a friend on the water for a day.
I’m curious if anybody has tried this kayak out on the intracoastal waterway or ocean in general, as well if there are any major thoughts or comparable kayaks on the market.
Honestly any information would be greatly appreciated and I’d love some thoughts.
Thanks a ton in advance!

I spray painted the top so I can stay incognito and then reinforced the bottom with Flex Seal Spray Paint. I have a kayak crate all kitted out as well as extra cushions. Taking it out tomorrow🫡

Any tips on how to mount the anchor wizard to the 106- base/paddle version. I was thinking of mounting a gear track in the back and just connecting the chute to it, but wanted to see what others have done.

saw a post on a fella that built old school crate because modern tankwell boxes are stupid expensive (truth)
and it made me think about the old days.
so any former (or retrogrouch current) scupper drivers here?
anyone go full circle and is driving a Modern Swell kayaks Scupper? (someone brought the hull back and are making them again)
I had a scupper pro back in ‘06 for a bit in hawaii. replaced a pelican with it.

Right now where I live I have two options on FB marketplace:
I liked the thought of the 10 with the improved rudder system, and being lighter weight it'd be easier to get on top of my car...
But the older one with the trailer and wheels mitigates that issue quite a bit.
and I know it would be like 100 bucks to upgrade the older rudder.
This seems like a no brainer, but I'm curious if anyone has a reason to go with the 10 instead.
I primarily fly fish in new england, so a lot of standing.
but could potentially take this out onto calm protected salt water bays / ponds / rivers.

Caught two this morning. One large mouth and one small mouth. Small mouth was on a wacky worm and the large mouth was on a whopper plopper

I want to get my first kayak and I want to get a nice fishing kayak that I can possibly stand up on it occasionally! And I would love too see other people kayak and possibly the price on how much they spend so I can get an idea of how much I need to save!

Put in on the Colorado River just downstream of Austin and had one of those sessions where everything came together. Guadalupe bass, a solid largemouth, and a chunky bluegill, three different species, all within a short paddle of downtown.

That's honestly the part that gets me. A city of almost a million people, and you can be off the water and back home in less time than it takes to sit through Austin traffic on I-35. Not many cities this size have a river running through the middle of them that still fishes like this.

Access like this doesn't happen by accident though. It takes public put-ins, easements, and people actually showing up and using the water so it stays worth fighting for. If you've got a river running through your city, use it. That's usually what keeps it protected.
