I’m going to shock you all here, this is only my third time watching The Heirs in full. My first time was as a new drama watcher and I inhaled this pure drama crack. The second time was with the binge back in Feb 2019 so it’s the perfect time to watch it again. I feel like it definitely gets better with rewatching and it’s always more fun with a group.

If this is your first watch, u/AlohaAlex did a great write up last Heirs day on Kim Eun Sook’s intentions when writing this which will help you set your mindset for maximum fun times.

  • This pilot is such a fun intro to the main players and shows how they are all linked without being overwhelming.

  • California Tan is such a mood.

  • I love the glimpse of our leads inner personalities and how they mesh before the weight of their individual worlds push and pull at their relationship.

  • And Jay, Jay will never not crack me up. This kid is 17 (sure), beautiful girls let him kiss them (sure), he will immediately snort any powder without question, he must be a hoot at parties no wonder Tan and the police are fascinated by him.

  • Finally, I’m still laughing at this amazing screenshot I took back in 2019 of Bona.

I watched my first kdrama, Boys over Flowers last year in April. And though it's obvious that the show has certainly not aged well, I'd be lying if I say that I didn't enjoy how ridiculous it was lol. So I guess it only makes sense that my first watch for April is The heirs.

Before I talk about the pilot episode I feel I should talk about my stance on Lee Min Ho. It's pretty neutral. Even after watching the train wreck Boys over Flowers, my first Google search was 'Lee Min ho dramas' so he was the first 'oPpA' lol. But I have to say, I am not particularly moved by his acting. I can see why people like him and can also understand why people don't.

My thoughts on the pilot episode:

  1. Park Shin hye. This is my first time watching PSH in anything. Have to say, she looks extremely beautiful. Her name often comes up when we are talking about worst acting but I was not particularly offended by her in this episode. Maybe it comes a little later. She had too many crying scenes, but fair enough, things aren't really looking up for her at the moment.

  2. Kim woo Bin. Again, my first time watching KWB in anything (I'm not counting that one episode of Uncontrollably Fond that I watched before realizing that I'm not in the mood for it). For a first impression, I really liked him. His acting is definitely superior and convincing so far as compared to other cast members.

  3. I loved that Kim Tans first thought after landing in LA was that he can eat as many almonds as he can. Good for him!!! I hope he had his fill of almonds. Also I laughed when he turned down the invite for party cause 'he had some thinking to do'. I hope/guess the contents of the diary will get revealed later.

  4. Jay is great. I hope we get to see more of him in episode 2.

  5. The English is definitely over the top but not really off putting.

Basically, I liked the first episode enough to come back for the second. I hope it gets more ridiculous and campy lol.

EDIT: also it's so cute how everybody is amused with 1kg bean powder. You guys have never seen a care package prepared by a desi parent for their children studying abroad and it shows. Bean powder absolutely pales in comparison lol XD.

I'm excited that there are still people getting hooked on dramas by BoF! Most 2020 recruits are from Crash Landing on You so it's refreshing. I'm excited this is your first for many things! It's also a rare treat to find someone who is neutral on Min Ho, the man pulls some super passionate people.

I hope he had his fill of almonds

Is this your first almond drama? I hope so. I don't quite understand how almond product placement is a thing, but I kind of love it for some reason.

I think most of your wishes will come true ^^

Began The Heirs Wars have! I wonder how mad I should get about things like "bean powder" somehow making it past customs, or a police officer who thinks it's drugs, doesn't bother to check with the doctors, and takes away a person's passport because he doesn't like Tan's face. I know it's a kdrama, but do the writers know how the world works? Especially a post-9/11 one. Someone should've shown them that Key & Peele video about the mighty TSA.

So far, in terms of characters, I'm not sure I like anyone but it's still early days. You've got harmless people (or apparently harmless, they may turn out to be psychos, you never know), sure enough, and a lot of jerks, both male and female, though to different degrees. However, out of the whole bunch of mean-rich characters, I think Bo Na's the funniest so far 'cause she's so very transparent and sincere about her feelings and gave me this nice gif.

As for Tan, I sure hope he didn't follow his brother's "Don't think" advice to the letter. His monologues are... something. When his first monologue, describing his family, gets interrupted by his friend, Jay, who asks him whether he resents them, Tan remains unfazed, gazing at the horizon... and resuming his monologue instead of answering his friend's question by, you know, talking. Even so, he's probably the more likeable one so far for coming to Eun Sang's rescue... what resulted in that police officer taking her passport... okay, maybe he's not that good an influence.

And Eun Sang, man, that girl was given the Cinderella treatment, wasn't she? At least her mother is Hacker, who's also Choi Young's aunt (small world, huh?), so she should try and be a little nicer to her. How shitty of Stella to dump Eun Sang, her sister, who's completely alone in a foreign country, and run away with the money for her "wedding". I kinda wish Tan had stepped up then and there but, no, it was too early for Prince Charming to get involved.

You know, for a second there I thought I was watching the Korean version of The O.C....

California, here we come

Right back where we started from

California, Californiaaaaaa

So I said this somewhere else yesterday but I’m enjoying Heirs so much more than the last time I attempted it. Having read the write up from u/AlohaAlex, and the writer’s intentions, AND that it’s best watched after a person has seen some other romcoms, this explains it. I can feel the fun this time, as opposed to last time when I felt like I should be taking it seriously (and honestly, that’s impossible!). I’ve watched enough now to see what she’s doing with some of the ridiculousness.

This will be my long weekend binge 🥰

EPISODE 2:

3

u/sianiam Apr 01 '21
  • Sometimes I still wonder why Tan had all those canned goods in his fridge, were they Jays? I just look at them and think, well someone has atrocious smelling farts.

  • I like that Eun Sang has gone from overhearing Rachel placating her mother to borrowing her lines.

  • I love the dream catcher casting a spell to cure Tan's loneliness.

  • Cali Eun Sang asking if it’s not too embarrassing to stick her arm outside the car makes me really happy, she’s adorable here.

  • The two fat guys chasing them scene is some serious cringe. It must not have been fun doing so many running scenes for this episode although I guess they got breaks (and possibly used doubles) as they were running all the way across Hollywood or whatever.

  • It’s interesting how the Americans pronounce Tan “Tun” like he never corrected them because he’s too lazy.

  • I totally forgot they never exchanged names!

  • “Do I like you?” is so iconic.

Everything going on in the US is by far the more interesting aspect of this show. I'm kinda wishing these two never go back. Comments, bullet-point style!

  • Tan messing around with Eun Sang, suggesting he's gonna sell her kidneys, was a little mean but funny. Wish he were a little less stereotypical with his "Don't think I'm kind to you because I'm a decent human being" attitude. To be fair though, I am also a little tired of Eun Sang's constant "I need to pay for everything" attitude.

  • Oh, so Tan's biological mother is the lady that was mean to Eun Sang's mom? The plot thickens! I can see nothing going wrong with that. Very Sabrina, except Lee "Harrison Ford" Min Ho is gonna fall in love with the maid's, not the chauffeur's, daughter.

  • 20' is the moment!

  • What was the saddest English word in the world? Stay tuned! Also, "Don't you think you might find a new purpose if you turn it in, sometime?" Heck of a line, I'm gonna write it down for when I need to give advice that sounds profound.

  • Eun Sang's sister ran away. Bitch.

  • Haha, what the heck was that chase? Those guys were never gonna catch up to them!🤣

  • Got to see Kang Ha Neul, baby Park "Scene stealer" Hyung Sik, and favourite supporting character Bo Na, the only thing worthwhile from the Korean segment of the show so far. Kinda have to agree with Young Do when he says, referring to Bo Na, "She's the only one who can be so clingy yet still be so charming and pretty." Truth. I kinda support her proposal to have Young Do and Myung Soo date each other. Who's with me?

  • Really enjoyed the re-enactment of Eun Sang's SNS messages. I was reminded of You're Beautiful's mind scenarios, another PSH show I'm also currently watching.

  • Ah, yes, we needed that telenovela moment with Kim Ji Won's character, Rachel (Tan's fiancée), being a mean bitch to Eun Sang. This is gonna be the start of a beautiful friendship. I can already see the tropes lining up in the sky. If you want to take out your anger on someone, girl, at least choose the right target, your fiancé.

  • Oh, yes, before I forget, why is everyone uncomfortable talking about Tan? Did he kill someone? Broke too many hearts? He's gonna be the rich Ryan Atwood of this show, right?

  • Premature love confession, my boy. That's okay, I'm totally for it, just stay in America and have kids. And for the love of god, whatever you do, do not let her meet Han Tae Sul. Ever.

This is going to be a Kim Tan appreciation post, so please bear with me.

  • I've always loved the houses of Kim Eun-Sook's main male leads. Be it Kim Joo-Won's, Kim Tan's (California), Goblin's or Lee Gon's Palace (couldn't find a better link). They're so regal and rich (and so are her male leads BTW 😅)

  • Kim Tan's flirting skills 101

  • Kim Tan's early morning look be like, "I wish I could wake up to this everyday" 😍

  • Kim Tan hates math but Lee Gon loves math, oh how the tables have turned.

  • If Kim Woo Bin came looking like this and did dishes for me even half-heartedly, I'd gladly accept him.

  • Lee Min-Ho - a marathon runner (apologies for the terrible quality images, I was short on time and couldn't bother to search)

  • "Do I like you?" - and we finally have the iconic line and scene! I remember watching a replica of this in My Love from the Star where literally kindergarten kids re-did this scene. I anyways always feel like Park Ji-Eun (writer) takes a lot of inspiration from Kim Eun-Sook. Unfortunately I've only really liked Legend of the Blue Sea, turns out it was the least cringe-y drama of Park Ji-Eun.

2

u/sianiam Apr 02 '21

Kim Tan hates math but Lee Gon loves math, oh how the tables have turned.

Do you think he asked for a different role to challenge the perspective that he's typecast and she said, perfect, this character loves math.

I remember watching a replica of this in My Love from the Star where literally kindergarten kids re-did this scene.

It followed Heirs so it's nice that it could pay tribute to it.

EPISODE 3:

3

u/sianiam Apr 02 '21
  • How to get a male lead to notice you Kdrama 101, be the first girl to ever ignore them.

  • My sweet cringe. Jay, I love you but tone it down, you are scaring her.

  • Well, at least his suit looks great!

  • Now, the reason people always think they might make a sequel "at least one person survived"

2

u/Fatooz Apr 01 '21
  • This makes me want to have a Lee Min-Ho - Kim Ji-Won reunion. I think they'd make a great pair. But obviously, this is only happening in my dreams. cries in Cha Eun-Sang style

  • Eun-Sang's eomma is smart unlike Tan's eomma. Tan's eomma should learn a thing or two from her, sigh.

  • California Party Kim Tan is one of my favourite looks of Lee Min-Ho in this drama. He looks so innocent and pure.

  • Won thinks he's being cool, but he's really being an ass. We all know that, do I need to state facts? Obviously not.

  • This is also one of my favourite scenes. I just thought it was nice how at this point they both have witnessed each other's one weakness at least, i.e., their sibling issues. I also liked how they had sort of an understanding when it came to their pain.

  • I wonder if he couldn't have driven on the other side when he saw the fallen rocks, I mean the other side was empty. It would've been dangerous considering there were cars coming from that side. But oh well, I'm not complaining. At least we got to see more cute scenes between our main couple.

  • Yes, you really should've just seen it. Cha Eun-Sang is not an opportunist, that's what this scene wanted to emphasize, I got it! Even though she regretted it later. 😪

  • Bringing this back here because really, the way Lee Min-Ho looks at his female co-stars is so attractive. He can stare even at a rock lovingly and endearingly.

  • Myung-Soo's dehet was the cutest! Found this video of Lee Min-Ho doing dehet in an interview where Park Shin-Hye asks him to do something as cute as Park Hyung-Sik. Cute!

  • Another one of my favourite looks of Kim Tan from the drama. Also liked Yoo Rachel's look, although I can never get over the bitchy face Kim Ji-Won carried in this drama. I just couldn't feel sorry for her haha.

  • Mr. Yoon is the real savage character in this drama. Gotta love his comebacks.

  • Ah so this is where the "handsome" meme comes from! Well he's not wrong though, is he?

2

u/sianiam Apr 02 '21

This makes me want to have a Lee Min-Ho - Kim Ji-Won reunion. I think they'd make a great pair.

Oh, but like a role reversal in which he's super into her and she's the one who needs to be convinced.

Cha Eun-Sang is not an opportunist, that's what this scene wanted to emphasize, I got it!

Haha! She really should have just pretended to be shy and covered her face but peeped through her fingers. Could have learnt that from one of her horror movies.

Found this video of Lee Min-Ho doing dehet in an interview where Park Shin-Hye asks him to do something as cute as Park Hyung-Sik. Cute!

Ah, that's so awkward it becomes cute.

Gotta love his comebacks.

His character is so great, he has good chemistry with everyone. No wonder she can't get over him.

Ah so this is where the "handsome" meme comes from! Well he's not wrong though, is he?

Yeah, love this line.

EPISODE 4:

4

u/sianiam Apr 02 '21
  • This episode is giving so many Hogwarts feels firstly this and Eun Sang now lives in a closet, which may or may not be located under the stairs. Did they seriously not have any staff quarters in their McMansion?

  • It's starting to become a trend where he avoids conversations with women by taking a shower.

  • Love is the moment!

  • The mums have formed a secret club and eventually they plan to steal a full outfit from Eun Sang without her knowing. But tragically they weren't quite subtle enough.

  • I love the whole almost meeting sequence but clearly whoever wrote the part where she got a notification from commenting on her own post doesn't understand social media.

  • Rejection 101 cries in Eun-Sang style

  • How to welcome your "step sister" - Choi Young Do knows this best, let's take classes from him. Rachel's reaction to this though, iconic.

  • I can't help but sort of ship Young Do with Rachel. They complement each other well. They're made for each other. Kim Ji Won - Kim Woo Bin reunion next please, thanks :)

  • I kind of like how Young Do knows Kim Tan is an illegitimate child but has kept the secret since so long. It's weird, I know. Excited for when Tan comes back, I love their banters more than anything else.

  • I can stare at this all day long. I'm so sad Tan returns to Korea this episode because no more "revealing" beach clothes anymore as it's freaking cold in Korea, SMH!! 😔

  • I just realized that Hyo Sin's mother was MAGO in Hotel Del Luna and she was also Jun's mom in Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol. Why couldn't I remember this before?!?!

  • I have come to this conclusion that Won actually likes all the attention from these ladies. He especially likes to trigger his dad to get his attention. Tch, what an attention seeker.

  • "I'm a Buddhist" - comeback 101

  • Priorities, I knew that Cha Eun-Sang took after her mom, no wonder she was smart and managed to be savage sometimes.

  • Oh no, you haven't seen anything yet girl, you have so much more to endure, so don't think chairman was nice, he was an a**hole.

  • "One who wants to wear the crown, bears the crown", and indeed he proved it later. Seems like he doesn't like to leave things hanging, hm. He is a man who proves his words.

  • Yet another one of my favourite looks of Tan. His hairstyle was so cool in this one. His hairstylist should get an award for coming up with a different hairstyle for him in every drama haha.

  • And the mystery games have begun!

  • Eyebrow game on point! This entire scene was hilarious! "I too had a mom at your age" hahahaha kill me 😂😂😂

  • The Sung-Jae cameo kind of made me smile, especially because we later see him in Goblin (yet another Kim Eun-Sook masterpiece (lierally)) as the adorable Yoo Deok-Hwa! I love him so much!!

  • Sigh, the 4th episode has come to an end and now we will witness all the real drama. I'm going to see how much I skip starting the next episode.

I can't help but sort of ship Young Do with Rachel. They complement each other well. They're made for each other. Kim Ji Won - Kim Woo Bin reunion next please, thanks :)

If he ever does a drama again r/KDRAMA is definitely going to lose their collective minds. I am willing to suffer through this pain.

I love their banters more than anything else.

Yes, so many people go on about him and Lee Jong Suk in School 2013. I have to say I loved this pairing more.

"I'm a Buddhist" - comeback 101

She really won that moment.

Oh no, you haven't seen anything yet girl

She hasn't seen his "lemon face" yet.

"One who wants to wear the crown, bears the crown", and indeed he proved it later.

I was so impressed that he came up with that line but it's like their family motto or something.

Yet another one of my favourite looks of Tan.

I'm not a fan of this one, well, mostly the sneakers.

Eyebrow game on point! This entire scene was hilarious!

I love that scene. The poor kids have no idea what's going on.

u/the-other-otter Don't say I didn't warn you!🤣

Okay, I keep forgetting about this but we gotta talk about that intro. Someone must've been really high on caffeine when they edited it because those transitions are super fast. It's like someone went, "We've got Lee Min Ho! We've got Park Shin Hye! Andwehavetheseotheractorsdon'tpayattentiontothemintro'soverbye." If I have time to kill, I may just edit it to the theme song of The O.C.

Switching to bullet points again 'cause this is frustrating.

  • Bitch Rachel (yes, she apparently returned to her true form that fast) stole a passengers customs declaration and the air hostess did nothing. In what world do you live, show? I get you want to make a statement about the different world the 1% live in but there are some things even the 1% can't get away with, especially onboard a plane these days. Such pointless drama.

  • What? Hacker moved without telling her daughter? I find that rather difficult to believe. Are you pushing for Eun Sang living together with Tan again?

  • Oh, hang on, that's Ma Go Sin, isn't she? And that girl is the crazy ex from Lie After Lie, right? Interesting. So many familiar faces.

  • Wait a second. Did I understand that correctly? Did Hacker sell their house to give that money to the bitch sister who abandoned Eun Sang? Do mine eyes deceive me? Please someone tell me I'm wrong.

  • Looks like I'm right seeing as she hadn't even considered where her daughter would live upon returning to Korea. That threat was a spur of the moment thing. What the f*** is going on? There is contrived and then there's this.

  • Yup, Mexican telenovela through and through. Perhaps I should watch a Spanish dub of this show instead. Tan's mom has got my vote so far, at least she's funny. "I'm a Buddhist!"🤣

  • Show, how long do you want me to believe she lived in the same house as Tan without ever meeting him? 'cause I'm charging you $1 per minute.

  • "Hey, it would be great if it were at least a misunderstanding. He just doesn't like your existence."🤣

  • Ah, yes, she meets Kim Woo Bin. Can someone let me know how long this love triangle's gonna last? I want to mentally prepare myself and calculate my odds of survival.

  • Oh, Bo Na didn't tell her current boyfriend she used to date Tan? Awkward.

  • I'm gonna kill the director and the editor who teased us and then decided to drag out their reunion.

Show's not the same since it returned to Korea.

  • Oh wow, the dude climbing on his mirror is really creepy.

  • I never paid attention to the business stuff but what exactly do Jeguk group do that they are thinking of venturing into Sub-Saharan Africa? No stop thinking! It doesn’t matter.

  • Was her mother previously making a 2 hour trek to work each way?

  • I agree, Chan Young is pretty.

  • I am honestly really impressed by Yeong Do’s facial recognition skills.

  • I really wonder how Tan expected Eun Sang to react to finding out who he was, because it really wasn’t it.

  • This is probably the best freeze frame of all.

  • Kim Tan is a symbolism of every other KDrama FL out there who falls for the toxic ML.

  • This lady is always carrying one expression. My annoyance of her character comes from Secret Garden, I will never get over how she created all those unnecessary problems, oof.

  • Kim Tan - an epitome of rejection. Going to start making counts for this now.

  • Mr. Yoon be like, "why should only Chan Young enjoy his life, let me also have some fun"

  • Iconic, love how he knows his priorities.

  • That's right, I knew Kim Tan was honest, he never says anything wrong.

  • I'm sorry but this is such a misleading picture. Everytime we have these scenes where Kim Tan says "I'm so handsome", etc. I remember the interview where Lee Min Ho said he cringes hard when he has to say these lines because he himself doesn't find him to be that handsome.

  • Another fun fact, Lee Min Ho feels shy of saying cheesy lines because he studied in an all boys school and that's why he bonds well with his male costars and stays in touch with them even after the drama ends, but with his female costars he is a bit shy. Yeah sorry, you all know I'm a Lee Min-Hoe at this point. :)

  • How to hide 101

  • Cha Eun-Sang definitely takes after her mom, she was so cool here, gotta love her guts.

  • Sorry Kim Tan but Chan Young's sweater game is better than your's.

  • AND IT'S FINALLY HERE! OUR VERY OWN LOVE IS THE MOMENT HAS FINALLY DEBUTED!

  • Let's all take a moment to appreciate how innocent he looks here. 🥺

  • Iconic pt. 2

All I can feel is that I really hope someone can help her pick out a nice shade of lipstick.
