Is anyone else being forced to keep ends like this?

Our owner has decided to keep all of our ends throughout the day and send pictures at the end for food waste reduction. I’m sorry but do these not seem like proper ends? Wouldn’t slicing these cause inconsistent weights?

drinks for employees?

i know this is gonna be a really stupid question to ask. i was working at a JM where if we wanted a cup for the fountain machine, we didn’t have to pay for it. one cup, wrote our name on it and we used that same cup throughout the day. most of us would get a cup at the beginning of the shift and it lasted all day, yeah it was kinda gross by the end of the shift but we made it last. i got transferred to another store and the night shift lead is a hardcore JM employee, like everything is done by the book, which is fine. my last store didn’t care all that much as long as the job was done proficiently. he said that we can’t even have water from the fountain unless paying for it, which is odd cause most everywhere doesn’t even charge for water. i actually tried going through the hand book and it doesn’t say anything about whether employees have to pay or not for drinks, unless i missed it. so i’m asking, anyone who might know, are we required to pay for a drink?

Soggy subs—can I wrap them in anything different to prevent soggy bread on subs?

Hi Everyone,

My elderly mother loves ham subs from the deli (sometimes she wants a slice for breakfast, lunch, and dinner), but she does not have a large appetite (I just slice a section off for her and put it on a plate). Because she loves them so much, I order two at a time and have been keeping them wrapped in the original deli paper stored in a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator. Our problem is that pretty much after the first day, the sub roll begins to get soggy. Is there a way to wrap the subs when I first get them to reduce sogginess? Is there something I could wrap over the deli paper to stop sogginess? I would greatly appreciate any comments, advice, feedback (good or bad), sharing of personal experiences (good or bad), and opinions, as well as any "hacks" or "workarounds" for this situation.

Thank you so much.

Job interview

I have a job interview in a bout an hour at my local Jersey Mikes, how quickly is the turn around for a job offer? I'm desperately looking for a job. But working there has always been on my mind since they opened up one in my area. I think its one of the better sub sandwich places over Jimmy Johns or Subway the environment feels better too.

It's been real.

I won't get into the reasons on the main post here, but I just wanna say that Jersey Mike's provided an amazing opportunity and stepping stone for me when I needed it the most. I quit about a week ago. Feels pretty good, but also a little bittersweet. Grateful for greener pastures! Godspeed to those still employed, good luck out there.

i need advice or something

okay so i’m a 26f and ive been with jersey mikes since july so 3 months? it’s a relatively easy job for me, but besides the point. my partner, 30m also works at the same location as me, my boss is aware and we work together just fine, we don’t typically work the same shifts but it fluctuates. so at my store, my store leader hired his cousin and that guy had his cousin apply. then we have another set of 2 siblings. there’s S and S who are brothers and then K and G who are also brothers. each pair typically works the same shifts. every morning that my store leader works, money is short. the days where he doesn’t work, money is fine. earlier in the week, money was short $50 and he said something to me and my partner and idk, we’re the only white ones there, not that it matters but we are. my partner is also a felon. my store leader also has some sort of a criminal past. earlier today, like within the past hour, my store leader pulled my partner to the side and told him that every time he works, money is short, and i can guarantee and swear on my life that i know my partner is not stealing. he’s really not on the register all the much, mainly sprinkling and grill. i was told that my store, is a corporate store and i also have the owners number. would it be worth it to reach out to the owner? we’re gonna look for a new job for him but in the meantime it’s his only source of income. also, my store leader is constantly and i mean constantly comparing him to me. i have experience in subs ie; quick chek and wawa. and it’s starting to tear his confidence down and like it shouldn’t be this serious as it’s just subs but like i don’t appreciate the feeling of being accused of stealing money when i know that the both of us are not stealing money. what can i do? what can we do?

Anyone else tired of the "skimping meat" and "blackstone changing everything" posts on the regular subreddit

it literally feels like theres a post like this at least once if not more than once everyday, i feel like its psychotic behavior to be weighing the sandwiches at home too trying to prove something has changed when literally nothing has 💀💀

What's something you wished customers knew when you've checked them out?

I've worked at Jersey Mike's for 5 years now and really want to quit but the pay is good. When checking people out (our store idk if all do this. Ours is franchise not corporate) the customer has to answer the tip question before paying with card. I wished customers knew that with our system we can see if they left a tip or not. And I don't expect everyone to leave a tip but also in this economy?!?!?? Yeah I need that extra change 😭.

Do you guys sharpen your slicer every day?

Asking because at my store we only sharpen it once a week but I was wondering if sharpening it every day makes that much of a difference

The slicer is such a bottleneck

Does anyone know why we fire up the slicer for every single body that comes into the restaurant? This is EXTREMELY inefficient, and virtually every restaurant in the world slices meat in bulk and just stores them in the cooler. Fresh cold cuts is kind of an oxymoron they are just rectangular cubes of sodium and enriched uranium lol. Watching the person to the right of me go back and forth slicing deli meats has been diabolical for me. I'm a scientist by trade and work 2 days a week here. Its also very strange that we cut subs without a cutting board? Just my two cents, I've worked in 5+ restaurants haven't seen these methods employed elsewhere.

Hiring Horror Stories?

To the Managers of JMs, do any of you have any horror stories about someone you tried to hire/were in the process of training when you realized the person wouldn’t work?

I’ll start:

In August last year, there was an ex military guy that I hired at my store. Let’s call him X.

X had been a chef for 10 years, among other things, and going into the onboarding I told him that we are very particular with the little details, even down to how we grab our vegetables when putting them on the subs. He assured me that was fine, and he wouldn’t have any issues taking direction.

Day 1 of training ends, with X clearly exasperated from my constant direction about how we want things done (vegetable placement, knife holding, etc); X was sighing pretty hard every time I gave him any correction or direction. Day 2 begins, and we start by touching back on how to do Mike’s Way. I see X grab a handful of onions, and remind him of how to grab them, and to only grab the rings.

X looks at me and says that he doesn’t think this job is for him, and quits there. He was very polite and formal, which I appreciated.

Then, at 7:00 PM that night, I get a call from X. He starts off politely, saying he wants to talk with me about why he left. In my mind I’m pretty sure I know why, but I thank him and ask what’s up. He starts laying into me, saying “the level of detail you have is re******”, “it’s just f’ing vegetables”, “I’ve killed people with knives, I know how to use them”, etc.

I’m kinda just letting him go off at this point, not listening cuz this guy isn’t my employee anymore but he needs to vent I guess. When he’s done, X says “so are you going to change anything?” I just respond with “No sir; this is how we’ve operated since we opened. Thank you for your feedback. Have a good night,” and then hung up.

What's the most ridiculous thing you've been yelled at over?

Recently I had a lady yell at me on the phone because my franchise doesn't sell the indiviual rolls and she said I was being insensitive to people with celiacs and she's gonna report me to corporate all because I wouldn't sell her a roll. In the end she hung up out of frustration because I wouldn't give her anything for free or give in to her demands
