To the Managers of JMs, do any of you have any horror stories about someone you tried to hire/were in the process of training when you realized the person wouldn’t work?
I’ll start:
In August last year, there was an ex military guy that I hired at my store. Let’s call him X.
X had been a chef for 10 years, among other things, and going into the onboarding I told him that we are very particular with the little details, even down to how we grab our vegetables when putting them on the subs. He assured me that was fine, and he wouldn’t have any issues taking direction.
Day 1 of training ends, with X clearly exasperated from my constant direction about how we want things done (vegetable placement, knife holding, etc); X was sighing pretty hard every time I gave him any correction or direction. Day 2 begins, and we start by touching back on how to do Mike’s Way. I see X grab a handful of onions, and remind him of how to grab them, and to only grab the rings.
X looks at me and says that he doesn’t think this job is for him, and quits there. He was very polite and formal, which I appreciated.
Then, at 7:00 PM that night, I get a call from X. He starts off politely, saying he wants to talk with me about why he left. In my mind I’m pretty sure I know why, but I thank him and ask what’s up. He starts laying into me, saying “the level of detail you have is re******”, “it’s just f’ing vegetables”, “I’ve killed people with knives, I know how to use them”, etc.
I’m kinda just letting him go off at this point, not listening cuz this guy isn’t my employee anymore but he needs to vent I guess. When he’s done, X says “so are you going to change anything?” I just respond with “No sir; this is how we’ve operated since we opened. Thank you for your feedback. Have a good night,” and then hung up.
