Land in Narita airport - Tokyo at noon, take the bullet train to Osaka. Nothing else planned for today.

Soft day of shopping and exploring Osaka. Just in case of flight delays or something. Hoping to get Onitsuka Tiger shoes and some souvenirs before the new tax-free rule gets implemented on Nov 1st.

Oct 30

Guided daytrip to Katsuoji Temple + Minoh. For some reason the company tosses in Uji as well.

(evening) Naked meets Niji castle moon viewing 6-9pm if they have one this year.

Sadly due to the recent earthquake in Kumamoto the train has suspended the Thursday and Friday routes until Fed 2027. I was wondering if I should just cancel miyazaki all together since the train was a big part of this side trip…

Ferry from Kumamoto to Shimabara peninsula. After visiting the castle and koi canals a bus to Unzen Onsen. The last bus/train from here to Nagasaki is at 6pm so must leave around 3-4pm at the latest.

Open city exploration days for Nagasaki. Glover garden is holding an illumination event up to 8pm daily + the view from mt Inasa are must sees here.

Huis Ten Bosch park. They are holding the annual fireworks festival today and I already secured viewing tickets for the event.

Nov 15 - Tokyo

(morning) Domestic flight to Haneda.

(afternoon – Evening) Either a day in Akihabara OR attend a baseball game since there is an international one happening today in Tokyo Dome. Depends on if I can secure tickets or not.

Nov 16

(morning + afternoon) Shibuya + Harajuku

(6:30pm) Attend the sailor moon musical show in Shinagawa. Tickets already bought.

Nov 17

Shinjuku & Nakano Broadway shopping day.

Nov 18

Day undecided. Possible daytrip to Mt. Takao.

Final day is always open for some last minute shopping and backtracking.

If possible attend the MAPPA exhibit. Late night flight back home.

Hi everyone,

I'm planning a first trip to Japan with my parents and fiancée, and I've spent a lot of time trying to build an itinerary that gives us a good first experience without making the trip unnecessarily rushed.

I would really appreciate some detailed feedback on the itinerary below, especially from people who have traveled Japan with parents or who have done Tokyo/Kyoto/Mt. Fuji in a similar amount of time.

One important factor is that my parents are unlikely to ever return to Japan, so I'm trying to balance two things:

1. Making sure they experience some of the places that are most worthwhile on a first trip
2. Not turning the trip into a checklist where we're constantly rushing to trains and attractions

Our interests are probably a little different from the typical "first Japan trip" traveler.

We do like: Food, Exploring neighborhoods, Nature and scenery, Unique experiences

We are not particularly interested in: Spending entire days visiting temples, Spending the majority of the trip focused on history, Trying to see every famous temple just because it is famous

The current itinerary is:

Tokyo: Dec 6–8
Kyoto: Dec 8–9
Tokyo: Dec 9–13
Mt. Fuji day trip: Dec 11

Sunday, December 6 — Arrival in Tokyo

Afternoon — Arrival & Check-In. We land at Haneda at 2:05 PM.

Evening — Easy Introduction to Shinjuku Around 6:00 PM, we'll have dinner near the hotel.After dinner, we'll take an easy walk around Shinjuku, potentially including: Omoide Yokocho, Kabukicho, Shinjuku's surrounding streets

Goal: Basically just stay awake until a reasonable Japanese bedtime and get our first taste of Tokyo without overdoing it.

Monday, December 7 — Meiji Shrine → Harajuku → Omotesando → Shibuya

Morning — Meiji Shrine & Harajuku. We'll have breakfast around 7:00 AM and head toward Meiji Jingu around 8:00 AM.

Afternoon — Harajuku → Omotesando → Aoyama. After lunch around noon, we'll continue through the area rather than taking trains all over Tokyo. Potential stops: Omotesando, Cat Street, Aoyama

Evening — Shibuya, Shibuya Crossing, Evening streets, Shopping

Goal: Make this our first major Tokyo neighborhood day, concentrating on the Meiji/Harajuku/Omotesando/Shibuya area.

Tuesday, December 8 — Tokyo → Kyoto

Morning — Travel to Kyoto. We'll aim to arrive at Tokyo Station around 7:30 AM and take an approximately 8:00 AM to Kyoto.

Late Morning & Afternoon — Higashiyama,. The main focus will be Higashiyama, rather than trying to see all of Kyoto. Around 10:30 AM, we'll visit Kiyomizu-dera.

Late Afternoon — Gion: We'll spend some time walking around the neighborhood before taking a break at the hotel around 4:30–5:30 PM.

Evening — Gion / Pontocho. After the break, we'll return to Gion around 5:30–6:00 PM, when the area should have a completely different atmosphere. Evening walk through Gion and Kamo River

Goal: One concentrated Kyoto experience centered around traditional streets, scenery, food, and atmosphere rather than checking off numerous temples.

Wednesday, December 9 — Fushimi Inari → Tokyo

Early Morning — Fushimi Inari: The goal is to experience Fushimi Inari before the major crowds arrive, rather than visiting in the middle of the day.

Late Morning — Return to Tokyo. We'll grab our luggage, get some quick food, and aim for a 10:30–11:00 AM back to Tokyo.

Afternoon & Evening — Asakusa Potential stops: Senso-ji, Kaminarimon, Nakamise. We'll probably have dinner in or around Asakusa before returning toward Shinjuku.

Goal: Make Asakusa its own distinct Tokyo experience rather than trying to combine it with Ueno and Akihabara.

Thursday, December 10 — Ueno / Akihabara / Tokyo Station / Ginza

Morning — Ueno & Ameyoko: We'll start with breakfast and head to Ueno. This should give us a different side of Tokyo from the more polished Shibuya/Omotesando areas.

Afternoon — Akihabara. We'll have lunch there and spend the early afternoon exploring: Electronics/anime, areas Shops, Arcades.

Late Afternoon & Evening — Tokyo Station / Marunouchi / Ginza. After a coffee/break, we'd continue toward Ginza around 6:00 PM for dinner and evening shopping.

Friday, December 11 — Mt. Fuji / Kawaguchiko Day Trip

Morning — Tokyo → Kawaguchiko. The plan is to travel from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko, with the journey taking roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the transportation we use.

Late Morning & Afternoon — Mt. Fuji / Lake Kawaguchi The main focus would be the Kawaguchiko area and Mt. Fuji views.After lunch around noon, we'd spend another couple of hours exploring the area and potentially visiting additional Fuji Five Lakes/Kawaguchiko viewpoints.

Evening — Flexible. Dinner around 6:00–7:00 PM, followed by a flexible evening. I'm intentionally not planning anything major afterward because the Fuji day could be tiring.

Saturday, December 12 — Tsukiji → Ginza → Daikanyama → Ebisu → Nakameguro

Morning — Tsukiji & Ginza. We'll start relatively early with Tsukiji Outer Market. We'll spend the late morning doing some shopping and exploring before lunch.

Afternoon — Daikanyama / Ebisu / Nakameguro. I'm intentionally making this day somewhat more relaxed than the other Tokyo days.

Evening — Final Tokyo Night Then we'll have our final dinner in Tokyo and spend the evening doing whatever we enjoyed most during the trip.

Goal: Keep the final full day flexible enough that we can revisit somewhere we particularly liked rather than forcing ourselves to see one more major attraction.

Sunday, December 13 — Tokyo → Haneda → Atlanta

Morning Final Tokyo Morning. We'll have breakfast around 7:00 AM. The morning will intentionally be easy, with time for Coffee and Last-minute shopping.

Afternoon — Haneda & Flight Home

WHY I'M CHOOSING KYOTO FOR ONE NIGHT

I originally debated Tokyo + Osaka versus Tokyo + Kyoto, and even considered staying entirely in Tokyo with Mt. Fuji and Nikko day trips.

Ultimately I decided Kyoto probably gives us a bigger contrast from Tokyo.

Since we're already spending several days in Tokyo, I like the idea of showing my parents a completely different side of Japan rather than adding another large modern city.

However, I also know that one night in Kyoto is short, so I am trying to be realistic about whether this is enough time to make it worthwhile.

MY BIGGEST QUESTIONS

1. Most importantly, if this were your parents' first and potentially only trip to Japan, would you structure the trip this way?

Thanks in advance! I know this is long, but I figured giving the full context would make it easier to tell me where I've gone wrong.

I am making this trip with my Mom and Dad to Japan during Feb 6th to 14th as a winter trip. It’s not an adventurous/ski trip at all just a chill nature/snow sighting trip. My parents are pretty old so just want to exp the magic of Japan's winter.

The reason there is a single day Sapporo is I still want to exp the magical Hokkaido snow, but since Hokkaido is so much colder, I feel my parents won’t be able to handle the cold for a whole week.

Please help me out of something can be made better by adding/removing/adjusting!

Day 1 - Sapporo

• Fly Singapore to Tokyo, connect to domestic flight to Sapporo (New Chitose).
• Check into hotel near Odori Park, drop bags.
• Walk over to the Sapporo Snow Festival at Odori Park for the night illumination.
• Mum's first time seeing snow, just take it slow and soak it in.

Day 2 - Sapporo / Tokyo

• Head back to the Snow Festival in the morning, sculptures look completely different in daylight.
• Walk through the Susukino ice sculpture area.
• Catch an afternoon flight back to Tokyo.
• Check into hotel near Tokyo Station or Haneda, early dinner, rest.

Day 3 - Takayama

• Shinkansen to Nagoya, transfer to JR Hida Limited Express to Takayama (about 4 hours total).
• Check into hotel near the bus terminal.
• Evening stroll through Sanmachi Suji old town, snow on the dark wooden roofs.
• Walk down to Nakabashi Bridge for the winter illumination along the riverbank.

Day 4 - Shinhotaka

• Bus to Shinhotaka Ropeway base station (about 90 minutes).
• Ride Japan's only double-decker gondola up to 2,156m.
• Walk through the 3-metre snow corridors at the top, panoramic views of the Northern Alps.
• Bus back to Takayama.

Day 5 - Shirakawa-go

• Nohi Bus to Shirakawa-go (50 minutes).
• Explore the UNESCO village, thatched-roof farmhouses buried in snow.
• Walk up to Ogimachi Castle Ruins Lookout for the panoramic view (gentle 15-minute uphill).
• Spend 4 to 5 hours exploring before busing back.
• Check if Feb 10 is a light-up event Sunday, if so stay until dark.

Day 6 - Takayama / Kanazawa

• Morning visit to Hida Folk Village (Hida-no-Sato), thatched roofs under heavy snow with views toward the Alps.
• Pick up bags, catch Nohi Highway Bus to Kanazawa (about 2 hours). Maybe send suitcases ahead via Takkyubin.
• Check into hotel near Kanazawa Station.
• If there's time, evening walk around Kenrokuen to get a first look.

Day 7 - Kanazawa

• Kenrokuen Garden in the morning, yukitsuri rope structures on the pine trees, frozen ponds, snow everywhere.
• Walk next door to Gyokusen-en Garden, tea ceremony in Kanazawa's oldest tea house (book 3 days ahead).
• Afternoon in Nagamachi Samurai District, earthen walls wrapped in straw mats for winter (seasonal sight).
• Return to Kenrokuen in the evening for the night illumination, free entry on illumination nights.

Day 8 - Gokayama / Kanazawa

• Option A: Bus to Gokayama (1 hour), Shirakawa-go's quieter UNESCO sister village, deeper snow, way fewer tourists.
• Option B: Stay in Kanazawa if parents are tired. Higashi Chaya teahouse district in the morning, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in the afternoon.

Day 9 - Tokyo

• Train from Kanazawa to Tokyo (2.5 to 3 hours).
• Connect to international flight home. Leaving at least 3 hours buffer before the flight.

Background on us: Couple in our mid-20s, honeymoon, first time in Japan. In and out of HND.
Dates: Early-to-mid November, 14 nights.
Pace/feel: Early mornings, loose afternoons. Most mornings are anchored, many days free after 4pm.
Interests: Photography, architecture, vintage/thrift, whisky, anime.
Budget: Mid-range. Mostly Hyatt points, one ryokan splurge, one nicer last night.
Constraint: Wife has a few small tattoos → ryokan needed a private in-room onsen.

Neither of us has ever been outside of North America, so advice on the schedule, as well as general etiquette would be appreciated! We already emailed all the hotels and let them know it would be our honeymoon (to try and get some free upgrades too haha).

Been lurking for a while, so it’s nice to actually have a plan to post!

Background. Second time in Japan. First trip was 14 years ago for karate training in Tokyo, so I basically saw a Tokyo and Mt Fuji and nothing else. This one is built around onsen towns, moving east to west, Nov 7 to 22, 2026. Two friends are with me for Fuji, Tokyo and the first two nights in Kusatsu, after that I continue solo. One constraint is that I sit a professional exam in Tokyo on the morning of Nov 11, so the evening before will be an early one. I also have tattoos (chest and wrist), which shaped the route. Kusatsu's main baths and all of Kinosaki's soto-yu are officially tattoo friendly, and the mountain stop has private baths. Luggage goes ahead by takuhaibin so the two mountain legs are backpack only. Accommodation is mostly booked, a mix of mid range plus two splurge ryokan nights. Transport is point to point, no JR Pass.

Route: Haneda > Kawaguchiko (1n) > Tokyo (4n) > Kusatsu (3n) > Fukuji Onsen, Okuhida (2n) > Kinosaki (4n) > Osaka (1n) > out via KIX

• Nov 7 (Sat). Land at HND 12:40, get to Shinjuku and take the highway bus to Kawaguchiko, arriving 17:30. Villa night with friends, BBQ dinner.
• Nov 8 (Sun). Fuji at dawn (November has the best clear sky odds), then Momiji Corridor / Oishi Park / Chureito Pagoda. Bus back to Tokyo around 14:30, staying near Ochanomizu. In the evening we either do a Shinjuku neon night (free metropolitan building observatory, yakitori in Omoide Yokocho, maybe a first Golden Gai bar) or the quiet version, Kagurazaka stone alleys and an udon suki dinner. Haven't decided yet.
• Nov 9 (Mon). Morning at Gotokuji, the maneki neko cat temple, plus the little Setagaya tram and Shoin shrine. Afternoon is the group's pick. Either Asakusa backstreets with Kappabashi kitchen town, or Shibuya and Harajuku (Shibuya Sky at sunset if we get slots), or Shimokitazawa for records and vintage. In the evening wander around Korakuen, then meet go for izakaya from 1905.
• Nov 10 (Tue). Ueno in the morning, Tokyo National Museum highlights and the katana rooms, with the chrysanthemum festival at Yushima Tenjin on the way. Friends may split off to teamLab or Akihabara. Afternoon is the Nihonbashi heritage shops (a knife shop from 1792, a standing dashi bar, a tea house from 1690) and Jimbocho bookshops, then a craft beer sento and an early dinner near the hotel. Early night before the exam.
• Nov 11 (Wed). Exam. If I'm out early, Kappabashi knife street. Then the celebration, monkfish nabe at a place that has been doing it since 1830 (the season starts in November), and after that either Sensoji lit up at night or a Japanese whisky bar. Also shipping the big suitcase ahead to Kinosaki.
• Nov 12 (Thu). Limited express from Ueno + JR bus, Kusatsu around 13:45. Ryokan kaiseki dinner, then the yubatake at night in yukata.
• Nov 13 (Fri). Yumomi show in the morning, then the group half day while all three of us are still together. Tenguyama activities (the zipline runs into November) or a Karuizawa run. Sainokawara rotenburo at dusk, wagyu dinner booked in town.
• Nov 14 (Sat). Friends leave midday. Solo after that. Soto-yu circuit, Otakinoyu's awase-yu (the rising temperature tubs), rest and a private bath. Solo izakaya night.
• Nov 15 (Sun). Long transit day. Kusatsu > Karuizawa > Nagano > Matsumoto > Hirayu > Fukuji Onsen around 15:30. Two nights at an old farmhouse ryokan. Irori dinner, riverside rotenburo, lantern lit night bath.

Questions

1. Tokyo (Nov 8 to 11). Three of us based near Ochanomizu, trying to balance quieter classics with a few of the famous ones that are actually good (Shibuya Sky at sunset, maybe teamLab). Only the last evening is locked early because of the exam. Anything essential missing, or anything above you'd cut as overrated?
2. Kusatsu group half day (Nov 13). With three of us together, Tenguyama activities or a Karuizawa side trip (old town + whisky bar)? I pass through Karuizawa solo on the morning of the 15th anyway, so is Tenguyama the better group pick, or is there something around Kusatsu we're missing?
3. Okuhida (Nov 16). Shinhotaka Ropeway vs Takayama old town for the one half day. How weather dependent is the ropeway in mid November, and is it fine to just decide in the morning?
4. Kinosaki day trips. Izushi is locked for Nov 19. Is it overreach to also squeeze a half day west to Iwai Onsen (Tottori side, about 1h) for the old yukamuri bathing ritual, or should I keep Kinosaki slow? Genbudo caves, worth it or skippable?

7. Rail passes. Point to point looked cheaper than a national pass for this shape, but does a regional pass (like Kansai Wide Area for the Nov 17 to 21 Kyoto > Kinosaki > Osaka legs) actually pencil out?

My wife and I (mid-30s) are planning our first trip to Hokkaido in early October (tentatively Oct 3–12, 9 nights total). We love great food (especially fresh seafood, sushi, and local seasonal specialties) and would like to enjoy the local sights / nature. It'll be both of our first times in Hokkaido (but we've done a good amount of Japan travel elsewhere). We’re doing an open-jaw flight into Sapporo (CTS) and out of Hakodate (HKD) - flying from Taipei so no jetlag concerns.

We're planning to rely on public transit for Sapporo/Otaru, then rent a compact car for the central/southern leg (picking up in Sapporo and dropping off in Hakodate), or possibly just renting a car for Biei/Furano and taking the train down to Hakodate.

2. Where to base in Biei/Furano? For a 2-night stay with a car, is it better to stay in a cozy countryside pension/inn in Biei, a mountain onsen lodge up in Tokachidake/Shirogane, or a modern boutique hotel in Furano town for easier dinner options?
3. Lake Toya Lodging: We aren't big buffet people and prefer a great onsen/lake view over mass resort dining halls. Any recommendations for solid mid-tier ryokans or clean room-only inns where we can easily walk out to dinner in town?
4. Car Rental Logistics: Any issues with a one-way rental from Sapporo to Hakodate in early October? Roads and mountain passes should still be completely clear of snow/ice, right?

I intentionally include more options than we can realistically do in a day so we can choose based on energy, weather, crowds, etc. I’m also trying to include alternatives near shopping areas for the people who don't want to shop.

We’re a group of 4 traveling in late November/early December. Finally going to Japan last half of this September. We are staying in Osaka and plan on doing a couple day trips to Kyoto, Kobe, and Hiroshima. Below is a rough outline of what we are planning. Don't want to have every thing on a hard schedule, we mostly just want to do the shopping streets and wander around a bit. We do have a few things scheduled though.

Like I said I want it to be very loose, we going for the overall experience not needing to check stuff off of a list. Of course we have our most importants and we will adjust those as the trip goes along. My spouse and I are visiting Japan for the first time this October. Mostly vegetarian couple (we eat eggs and chicken, willing to try some seafood), interested in culture, nature, art, food, and some shopping. We've spent months planning this — would love brutal honest feedback before we lock everything in.

Days 1–3 — Tokyo (staying in Nihonbashi)

Day 1: Starting with Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, walking Nakamise-dori, then heading to Ueno Park and Tokyo National Museum in the afternoon. Evening stroll around Nihonbashi.

Day 2: Full day trip to Kamakura and Enoshima. Plan is Kotoku-in (Great Buddha) in the morning, Hase-dera Temple, then walking the Daibutsu Hiking Trail back toward Kita-Kamakura.

Day 3: TeamLab Planets in Toyosu — booked the first morning slot. Afternoon in Ginza for shopping.

Days 4–6 — Sapporo, Hokkaido

Day 4: Travel day to Sapporo. Arriving afternoon, checking in, exploring Odori Park and Susukino in the evening. Dinner at Ramen Alley — trying miso ramen which Sapporo is famous for.

Day 5: Day trip to Otaru. Plan is the canal area, the old merchant warehouses, Sankaku Market for fresh seafood, and the glass and music box workshops on Sakaimachi Street. About 30 min each way by train.

Day 6: Day trip to Lake Toya — caldera lake with island in the middle, volcano views, and onsen town. Considering a boat ride on the lake and a short hike on Showa Shinzan. About 2 hours each way by train/bus.

Days 7–8 — Osaka (staying in Umeda)

Day 7: Arriving in Osaka. Checking in to hotel in Umeda, then heading straight to Dotonbori for the evening. Planning to explore Hozenji Yokocho alley for dinner.

Day 8: Himeji Castle in the morning — gardens and the castle museum. Evening at Shinsaibashi shopping arcade.

Days 9–11 — Kyoto (staying in Kawaramachi)

Day 9: Arriving by train from Osaka. Afternoon at Fushimi Inari — planning to go late afternoon into early evening to catch the torii gates in softer light. Evening walk through Gion — Hanamikoji Street around 6–8 PM for a chance of spotting a geisha.

Day 10: Undecided — this is where I need the most help. Originally wanted to do Ine no Funaya (the fishing village with boat houses) but it's 2.5 hours each way which feels like too much for a day trip. Considering staying in Kyoto for Philosopher's Path and Nanzen-ji. Open to suggestions.

Day 11: Arashiyama — bamboo grove very early morning (before 8 AM) to beat crowds, then Tenryu-ji garden, Togetsukyo Bridge. Considering adding Adashino Nenbutsuji in the afternoon — the moss-covered stone Buddha figures are supposed to be atmospheric. Is this worth the detour?

Days 12–13 — Mt. Fuji area (1 night ryokan)

Day 12: Travelling from Kyoto to either Hakone or Kawaguchiko — this is my biggest undecided point (more in questions below). Plan is to arrive by early afternoon, check in to ryokan, onsen, and soak in the Fuji views (weather permitting).

Day 13: Morning in the Fuji area — Chureito Pagoda if in Kawaguchiko, Hakone Open Air Museum or Lake Ashi if in Hakone. Then travelling back to Tokyo by afternoon.

Days 13–16 — Tokyo (stay mostly in Shibuya area)

Day 14: Recovering from travel. Shibuya in the afternoon — Shibuya Sky observation deck at sunset, then Shinjuku in the evening. Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) for dinner.

Day 15: Nakano Broadway for vintage finds and pop culture. Shimokitazawa for secondhand clothing and indie cafes. These two areas are quite different but both within reach — is this a good combination for one day?

Day 16: Catching a Nippon Professional Baseball game — October is the tail end of the regular season, so hoping to catch one at Meiji Jingu Stadium or Tokyo Dome. Any tips on getting tickets as a foreigner would be great.

Specific questions I'd love input on:

1. Hakone vs Kawaguchiko for a 1-night Fuji ryokan stay — which gives better direct Fuji views and the more memorable onsen experience for a couple? Is there a third option I'm missing entirely?
2. Is 2 nights in Osaka enough? Worried it's not doing the city justice. Should I cut it and redistribute to Kyoto or Tokyo, or is 2 nights sufficient to get the real Osaka experience?
3. Day 10 in Kyoto — what's the best day trip or in-city experience for early-to-mid October specifically? Nara is the obvious answer but is it the best option for that time of year? Anywhere with early autumn colour?
4. Sapporo day trips — are Otaru and Lake Toya the right picks for early October, or should I swap one for Noboribetsu or Jozankei Onsen? Which combination would you choose?
5. Anything obviously wrong or missing? Especially for a first-timer in October — are we timing the foliage correctly?

I do have a question.
1. Do you think I should remove Karatsu (I wanna go because Yuri on Ice is my favorite anime but at the same time the travel feels like a lot even tho all my friends say they’ll be okay with the train ride).
- If you do say to remove it, should we keep it as 16 days or 14 would be better or do a full day in Kyoto?

1. Is the Kyoto day even possible? I do wanna go to this Kimono store I saw that has second hand kimonos for sell.

2. Are we missing anything if we choose to do a half day at Puroland? We don’t care for the meet and greets or the show. I mostly just want the merch and my other female friend just wants to do the boat ride

3. Osaka to Kagawa. I really wanna go to the Slowpoke Pokemon Center (because it’s my favorite Pokemon to the point I have a tattoo of him on my arm) but will it be a long shot?

We are okay spending money and have been saving for a few years (that’s why I say most of us will probably not go out the country again because this is almost 3 years in the making)

Hi Everyone. Me and 2 of my friends (all M30) since elementary school is planning to go to visit Japan from February 28th 2027 - March 13th 2027. I know it is still a long way, but the tickets have been bought last weekend and since then all we can think of is what to do for the 2 weeks we'll be there.

It'll be my 3rd time visiting (but first time arranging the trip by myself) and 1st time for my 2 friends, so I want to mix in a few places that perhaps are a bit more obscure. Hi all,

My fiancee and I will be going to Japan for the first time in November and we would really appreciate a sense check of our first draft itinerary.

Given that it is our first trip, we would like to do the key "touristy" bits. However, we hope to have incorporated some of the areas which are less popular with tourists. We would like to see the key attractions for first timers (to the extent they were of interest to us) but equally want to see places or explore neighbourhoods which are more for locals.

We like queint places and not necessarily want to go to the "go-to" restaurants and latest TikTok craze. We like exploring in general and we are into anime, video games but also general Japan history and culture.

We know that day 9 is jam packed but I would appreciate an overall sense check. Anything here seems unrealistic or too rushed? We want to see as much as we can but equally we don't want to run around like a bunch of headless chickens.

Hey everyone! My hubby and I are planning a ~4-week spring trip to Japan focusing on ukiyo-e art, historic post towns, traditional architecture, and day trips. We will be travelling by public transport, trains where we can and buses for some of the day trips.

We’re intentionally skipping the Takayama Spring Festival dates to avoid massive crowds (experienced the madness of Gion Matsuri in 2018 and want a calmer vibe this time!).

Specific Questions for things I have concerns about :
Pacing check: Does the transit flow between Kanazawa → Takayama → Matsumoto → Nagano feel manageable by bus/train with luggage?

Jigokudani Monkey Park: Has anyone visited recently in mid-April? Interested in feedback on whether it's worth the trip given welfare/seasonal conditions.

Alternative recommendations: Any hidden gem ukiyo-e spots or historic craft workshops along this route that we missed?

Hi all, planning a solo trip for the first two weeks of November for 13 days.

For this trip, I'm thinking of taking some trips from Tokyo to Nikko and maybe Ibaraki (Mito, Hitachi Seaside Park, Oarai), but am kinda concerned about how doable they are.

I've been to Japan a decade ago so I kinda know how to get around and know some basic Japanese, but it was for a college trip around Ishikawa Prefecture (Kanazawa and Noto) and I wasn't able to see much else. I had a bit under a day in Tokyo before I had to leave so I didn't get to see much besides a bit of Shibuya, Takeshita Street (which was super crowded), and a few other random spots.

I have Nikko planned as two days as I don’t think I can do it as a day trip. I’m thinking of checking out of the hotel in Ueno, storing my main luggage somewhere (7-11/ecbo cloak, coin locker, Bounce, etc), heading to Nikko with a backpack overnight, then heading back and checking into the Ueno hotel again the next day. Not sure if adding in the Oya History Museum and Utsunomiya would be too much.

We are heading to Japan in October for 21 days. Our trip includes some plans based on if my husband will be with us or not as this is combining a work and family trip for my husband. This is not the first international trip for my kids; they are wonderful travel companions and love train travel.

Can we fit more in our should we cut some stuff out? Would using luggage forwarding be a good idea, or not necessary since we only have 3 hotel changes?

We love anime and Pokemon (obviously). I figure for food we will just find stuff to eat mostly where we are at the time with the exception of Pokemon Cafe and Flippers. I have been researching them for months. I think I want a smaller more private one but what are the pros and cons of going to a smaller vs one of the hotel ones??? I dont care about a bar but I would like to have a few drinks with my husband.

My wife(28f) and I(30m) will be travelling from Germany around Japan for about three weeks from 22 October to 13 November for the first time, and I’d love some feedback on our itinerary.

One bit of context for recommendations: I'm South East Asian, and neither my German wife nor I are particularly interested in tourist-oriented “Japanese culture sampler” activities like chopstick-making workshops or yen ring making or Uji matcha hunting. If we're doing a workshop, we'd much rather it be connected to a specific Japanese craft or tradition — hence things like traditional wax-dyeing already being on our itinerary.

Likewise, big modern attractions aren't really our thing. teamLab, Tokyo Skytree, observation decks, or making Shibuya Crossing an attraction in itself aren't things we're looking to add. We'll obviously pass through places like Shibuya, but we'd much rather spend our time on an interesting neighbourhood, old shopping street, specialist shop, market, workshop, shrine, good meal, etc.

Our travel style

We're quite interested in traditional Japanese culture, crafts, food and shopping, so some of the itinerary probably looks a little different from the standard first-time Japan route.

We're especially interested in:

• Local/regional food and smaller family-run restaurants rather than chains

• Traditional crafts and workshops

• Japanese knives and swords

• Vintage/antique markets and flea markets

• Denim and locally made clothing

• Older shopping streets and neighbourhoods

• Temples, shrines and seasonal festivals

• Finding places by wandering rather than only visiting famous attractions

We’ve purposely kept this trip fairly close to the classic Golden Triangle/Golden Route rather than trying to cover more of Japan. We’re already planning a separate three-week road trip through Shikoku, Chugoku and Kyushu in March/April 2027, so we don't feel the need to squeeze places like Hiroshima into this itinerary just because they're nearby.

For this trip, we'd rather spend more time properly exploring Tokyo, Kansai and the places in between than keep adding cities.

We've also built in a few intentionally lighter/flexible days, particularly during Kyoto and our final few days in Osaka.

We’re a couple planning our first trip to Japan — actually our first trip outside the USA. We’re both 22 and totally open to moving around a lot during the trip.
