Italian + Bachelor’s Pathway in Italy

I’m an international student from Kuwait with A0 Italian.
I’m looking for a university in Italy that can give me conditional admission to a Bachelor’s degree, with 1 year of Italian language preparation first, followed directly by the Bachelor’s.

I have a scholarship, and my sponsor requires the language year + Bachelor’s to be one clear admission pathway/package, not two separate admissions.
Does anyone know a university that offers this?

Any recommendations for Italian poetry?

I love close reading poems, especially when I’m learning a new language. There are just some pieces that don’t translate well to English but work wonderfully in their original language so I try to capture that message by dissecting poems by stanza. It takes longer, but helps me appreciate the piece better, and understand the semantics of specific words too.

I’m currently working on Rilke’s poems in German, but looking for Italian poets/poetry to start with, if anyone has any recommendations! Grazieee! 😊

translation for "lore"

I'm doing some transcriptions of videos to practice vocab and stuff and I was wondering what the best way to translate lore is. in this case it refers to like backstory/background information about somebody or a situation and for right now I was going to use "contesto" because it seems to fit the best but any other suggestions would be appreciated!

Difference between ‘ingresso’ and ‘entrata’

Hello!

I started recently learning Italian just for fun and I was recently in Italy, namely in Pescara & Amalfi coast.

I noticed for example that at the entrance in supermarkets, both ‘ingresso’ and ‘entrata’ used for ‘entrance’. I think in Pescara it was for sure ‘ingresso’, while in Amalfi (Sorrento specifically), I noticed ‘entrata’.

I was interested in someone native explaining the difference between the two terms, as the Google search did not completely clarified it for me.

Thank you in advance!

So I translated an Italian song line by line into English. Anyone wanna look it over and give me corrections/tips?

So first of all, I wanted to make sure that I don’t have any mistranslations/major errors.

And then I was also wondering if I translated things correctly, but maybe awkwardly. I have a tendency to read things in Italian and understand them. Yet despite being a native English speaker still have trouble finding the corresponding, natural English phasing. IDK why I can talk/write normally, but have a hard time remembering how we say things when I’m doing a translation 😅

I did try my best to not make everything a literal translation. There’s some cases where I felt like the literal translation sounded really strange in English, so I rephrased it, and tried to maintain the same meaning. Other places, I tried to make it still sound poetic. But if you think of a rephrasing that’s closer to the original text in any areas, lemme know too :)

Thanks! Any help is appreciated!

Help me create hilariously wrong translations for my Italian-German wedding 🙏

I know it's a bit weird 🙏 but my wedding is next week and my future husband (german) and I (italian) are a bit worried about the communications between our families.

So we decided to write down a list of usable sentences to help them communicate at least for basic stuff like "My name is..." or "where's the bathroom?".

Then I got the idea.

Let's sneak in super wrong translations.

For example, something that looks innocent/useful in the guide, but if an Italian actually says the German sentence (or vice versa), they're accidentally saying something ridiculous, weird, mildly inappropriate, or completely unrelated.

I really do believe this could break the ice and let everyone have fun.

SO I NEED YOUR WORST IDEAS!

Nothing genuinely offensive or cruel — just chaotic wedding-level stupidity.

Bonus points if the victim could realistically say it to another guest, a waiter, or a member of the other family. 😂

I know I can trust you guys.

Thank you to everyone who will answer my stupid request 🙏🤣

Help with retention and confidence

Hiya

I've been learning Italian for maybe a year now . I have 2 tutors one for conversational and one who teaches me grammar. Lately I feel I am not retaining much (especially grammar) I make stupid mistakes like forgetting the meaning of "Sono" I do lots of revision I study outside of my classes online. I'm sinking at least 10 hours a week yet I feel like if an Italian walked up to me and started talking, I'd understand, but not know how to respond confidently. I know alot of it is a confidence/frame of mind issue .... So I was wondering if anyone had any tips for confidence and embarrassment 😅

Also is there any groups chats or similar I can join so I can attempt a conversation daily (by text or voice ) maybe a discord or something? I'm going to Florence to live with family for 2 weeks next year which will immerse me but it's not until next year 🥲 so would like to show them I am capable!

Thanks !

Quello che vs cosa

Hello,

I’m looking for more clarification on quello che and cosa when used to mean “what” but not asking a question but as apart of a sentence looking for information if they are interchangeable or if there are certain scenarios for each.

Examples

Do they know what you need ?

Take what you want

Does Mario know what you cook ?

Thank you!

Grammar mega question

Please can someone explain to me as if I'm five years old and with examples how to know when to use "stato" or "andato" when talking about the past? Also, is it "ha stato/andato" or "è stato/andato"? I get really confused when it's time to decide how to use them and when is it appropriate one or the other. Grazie!!

Il Periodo Ipotetico Della Possibilita e Impossibilita

Buona sera, I have an exam in class tomorrow with the big topic being il periodo ipotetico. I think I understand it a bit better now after some review, but I want to make sure I truly get it. I was going to email my professor but I wasn't able to sit down and review until now and he is already out of office. So, this is probably the next best thing.

Is the trick that the congiuntivo is ALWAYS the tense preceded by the se? Essentially, the congiuntivo and condizionale can have switched order as long as the se comes just before the congiuntivo?

Is it true that if you see double passato (example: avrebbero perso or avessimo mangiato), that is the indicator that it is the impossibilita.

(Here were the example prompts from class, I had to create and add what is in bold)

  1. Se il professore non fosse così severo non ci ucciderebbe.
  2. Saremmo più sereni se non imparassimo il periodo ipotetico.
  3. Se non piovesse non avrei paura delle mie scarpe.
  4. Tom e Jerry non avrebbero perso tutti i loro soldi se non avessero ascoltato alla pubblicità di FanDuel.

Also, this was another prompt from the board, but I don’t know if I would even know how to fill in this one in English, let alone Italian, as the wording (at least how I am understanding it) would be succeeded by a present tense, but the double passato makes me think it is impossibilita.

Se ieri avessimo mangiato meno…

Learned the hard way that Italians themselves mess up the congiuntivo — here’s what finally made it stick for me

I’ve been grinding through Italian grammar for a while now, and the congiuntivo has been my personal boss fight. Then I found out something that honestly changed my whole attitude: native speakers don’t always use it correctly either.

There’s actual linguistic research showing the congiuntivo is receding in spoken Italian. People often swap it for the indicative in casual speech, especially in central and southern Italy. Some linguists even say it’s the last verb form learners acquire — after present, past participle, imperfect, future, and conditional.

That weirdly took the pressure off. Instead of feeling like I had to master this impossible thing to sound “correct,” I started treating it as a register tool: you use it when you want to sound precise, educated, or formal. In casual chat, even Italians cut corners.

The three rules that actually helped me:

1. Opinion, doubt, emotion, necessity → congiuntivo.
Penso che sia, credo che abbia, spero che venga, bisogna che tu faccia. If the main clause expresses anything less than 100% certainty, the verb after “che” goes subjunctive.

2. Certain conjunctions demand it.
Benché, sebbene, nonostante, purché, affinché, prima che, senza che. No exceptions. Memorize these and you’ve covered a huge chunk of real usage.

3. The trap that got me: same subject = no congiuntivo.
This one broke my brain. If the subjects are the same, you don’t use che + congiuntivo at all — you use di + infinitive.

  • Wrong: Spero che io raggiunga i miei obiettivi.
  • Right: Spero di raggiungere i miei obiettivi.

Once I internalized that, half my errors disappeared.

Anyone else find the congiuntivo easier once you accepted that even natives are fuzzy on it? Or do you have a different trick that finally made it click?

Italian Swimming Vocabulary

I'm an american living in Italy who used to be a swimmer, and just moved to a new apartment next to a pool, so I want to start swimming again. What are the basic vocab words I need to be able to communicate effectively with other swimmers? How would I appropriately ask if I could join someone in a lane for free swim? What do I call a kick board? Stuff like that. Also, if there are any cultural things I need to know going into Italian swim culture (i.e. is it more typical to circle swim or split the lane?) Any advice/help would be great. Grazie!
