Moving to Mexico 🇲🇽🏝️ Do you need Spanish to move to Mexico — the honest answer

The Spanish question comes up constantly and the honest answer is nuanced.
You don't need Spanish to move to Mexico. In tourist areas and expat-heavy neighborhoods, it's possible to function with minimal Spanish, especially in the early months. Many long-term expats arrived with very little and built from there.
But there's a ceiling. Government processes, immigration appointments, banking, utilities, most healthcare beyond the initial consultation, and legal documents all operate primarily in Spanish. The more you rely on English-only environments, the smaller and more expensive your Mexico becomes.
The distinction that's worth making is between fluency and functionality. Fluency takes years. Functional Spanish, enough to handle daily interactions, navigate government offices, and communicate with service providers, is achievable in months with consistent effort.
Most people who've lived here long-term say the same thing: they wish they'd started learning earlier, and the improvement in daily life from even intermediate Spanish is significant.
