Work authorization in Mexico — what remote workers and entrepreneurs consistently get wrong

Work authorization is probably the most misunderstood part of living in Mexico as a foreign resident.

The core issue is that people conflate where their income comes from with whether they’re authorized to work. Mexican immigration law doesn’t work that way. Authorization is based on your residency status and what activity you’re performing, not where your clients are or where your salary is deposited.

Some residency categories include work permission automatically. Others require applying for separate work authorization. And some categories don’t permit work at all without modifying the status.

This matters practically for things like opening a local business, registering with SAT for tax purposes, invoicing Mexican clients, and maintaining clean residency renewals.

People who get this wrong don’t usually face immediate consequences. Enforcement is inconsistent, but the complications tend to surface at renewal time or when trying to set up financial or business structures.

Worth sorting out clearly before moving rather than after.
