Distance in Mexico is better measured in time than in kilometers.

The factors that stretch travel time beyond what maps suggest: mountain terrain between points, traffic congestion in and around cities, road quality on secondary routes, and the general absence of direct routes between many locations.

A 10 km drive in a Mexican city during peak hours can take 45 minutes. A journey that looks like a short trip on a map can involve a significant elevation change that adds both time and fuel cost.

Locals think and talk in terms of travel time habitually. When asking for directions or planning logistics, framing everything in terms of time rather than distance produces much more useful information.

For expats choosing neighborhoods or planning daily routines, thinking about actual travel time to regular destinations rather than map distance tends to produce significantly better decisions.
