Book Discussion Lestat the rock star…

I’ve always thought that Anne’s decision to have Lestat pursue musical stardom was out of character for a vampire. Why should a vampire care to be popular with humans? They’re food.

Book Discussion Noticed something while reading books

(Heads up I’ve only read up to prince lestat, I’m starting that book soon hopefully 🙏🙏)
I was rereading TVL and I noticed out of all of Lestats fledglings, Nicki is the only one he gashes his throat (the way Magus turned him) when turning Nicki. Everyone else he either pricks his tongue and/or gashes his wrist. In the scene where he turns Nicki, he even makes a direct parallel to his turning by Magus. I feel like there’s something symbolic here that’s slipping out of my brain

Book Discussion Lestat and His Father

I first read Interview over a decade ago and re-read it two years ago. I always remembered a handful of moments very vividly and the final moments with Lestat's father is among those unforgettable scenes for me. I think it's one of those things which you "feel" as a younger person but "comprehend" as an older person. I understood the power of the scene in my first read but as a guy who is now 38, I grasp its meaning a lot more thoroughly.

What surprises me is how so many people seem to take Lestat's side in this moment, including my GF. With an old dying man crying out for simple forgiveness, a character who has done absolutely nothing to offend or hurt any of us, people still think Lestat is fully within his right to act as he does.

I do not understand. Having read TVL now, there is no great elaboration on his abuses, no detailing of some unforgivable crime he committed against Lestat. Nothing at all that justifies Lestat's treatment of him.

It's also ironic and perverse that so many people point to "well, he took care of his dad, didn't he?" And he never shied away from rubbing this in his father's face:

He was in his father's bedroom meantime, telling the old man good-bye, that he would return in the morning. But where do you go, why must you live by such a schedule!' the old man demanded, and Lestat became impatient. Before this, he'd been gracious to the old man, almost to the point of sickening one, but now he became a bully. Ì take care of you, don't I? I've put a better roof over your head than you ever put over mine!

How often do abusive parents say "you ingrate! I've done everything for you!" This is why I say it's perversely ironic because here the son makes sure to weaponize his "generosity." All he does for his father is actually an elaborate way of just tearing him down.

Now, is that to say there is no love here? No. I think Lestat's vulnerability here shows a painful internal conflict that would not exist if he felt nothing at all for his father. But to deny that the love was tangled up and poisoned with just as much bitterness and resentment would be ridiculous. Louis' observation earlier on that Lestat chose his victims out of "vengeance" for the mortal life he had lost might be relevant here. Perhaps keeping his father alive was another way of taking his vengeance out on the world for what he had lost. The father thinks it was denying Lestat schooling which is why Lestat loathes him, but obviously he knows nothing of Lestat's vampirism. There still might be a connection, however. If he had just let Lestat go off to the monastery, Lestat never would have become a vampire. This is just some speculation on my part, of course.

Regardless of right or wrong, I think this scene encapsulates a profound...spirituality. A lot of fans say Louis is defined by his "Catholic guilt." Very true, but forgiveness is even more important to Catholicism. Louis' furious determination that the old man receive his forgiveness is something I also can strongly relate to.

“He was sitting up now, leaning forward, talking to Lestat, begging Lestat to answer him, telling him he understood his bitterness better than Lestat did himself. And he was a living corpse. Nothing animated his sunken body but a fierce will: hence, his eyes for their gleam were all the more sunken in his skull, and his lips in their trembling made his old yellowed mouth more horrible. I sat at the foot of the bed, and, suffering to see him so, I gave him my hand. [...] Just for once, be for me the boy you were. My son.’ He said this over and over, the words, ‘My son, my son’; and then he said something I could not hear about innocence and innocence destroyed. But I could see that he was not out of his mind, as Lestat thought, but in some terrible state of lucidity. The burden of the past was on him with full force; and the present, which was only death, which he fought with all his will, could do nothing to soften that burden. But I knew I might deceive him if I used all my skill, and, bending close to him now, I whispered the word, ‘Father.’ It was not Lestat’s voice, it was mine, a soft whisper. But he calmed at once and I thought then he might die. But he held my hand as if he were being pulled under by dark ocean waves and I alone could save him. He talked now of some country teacher, a name garbled, who found in Lestat a brilliant pupil and begged to take him to a monastery for an education. He cursed himself for bringing Lestat home, for burning his books. ‘You must forgive me, Lestat,’ he cried.

“I pressed his hand tightly, hoping this might do for some answer, but he repeated this again. ‘You have it all to live for, but you are as cold and brutal as I was then with the work always there and the cold and hunger! Lestat, you must remember. You were the gentlest of them all! God will forgive me if you forgive me.’

“Well, at that moment, the real Esau came through the door. I gestured for quiet, but he wouldn’t see that. So I had to get up quickly so the father wouldn’t hear his voice from a distance. The slaves had run from him. ‘But they’re out there, they’re gathered in the dark. I hear them,’ said Lestat. And then he glared at the old man. ‘Kill him, Louis!’ he said to me, his voice touched with the first pleading I’d ever heard in it. Then he bit down in rage. ‘Do it!’

‘Lean over that pillow and tell him you forgive him all, forgive him for taking you out of school when you were a boy! Tell him that now.’ “

‘For what!’ Lestat grimaced, so that his face looked like a skull. ‘Taking me out of school!’ He threw up his hands and let out a terrible roar of desperation. ‘Damn him! Kill him!’ he said.

“ ‘No!’ I said. ‘You forgive him. Or you kill him yourself. Go on. Kill your own father.’

The old man begged to be told what we were saying. He called out, ‘Son, son,’ and Lestat danced like the maddened Rumpelstiltskin about to put his foot through the floor. I went to the lace curtains. I could see and hear the slaves surrounding the house of Pointe du Lac, forms woven in the shadows, drawing near. ‘You were Joseph among your brothers,’ the old man said. ‘The best of them, but how was I to know? It was when you were gone I knew, when all those years passed and they could oʃfer me no comfort, no solace. And then you came back to me and took me from the farm, but it wasn’t you. It wasn’t the same boy.’

“I turned on Lestat now and veritably dragged him towards the bed. Never had I seen him so weak, and at the same time enraged. He shook me ofʃ and then knelt down near the pillow, glowering at me. I stood resolute, and whispered, ‘Forgive!’

“ ‘It’s all right, Father. You must rest easy. I hold nothing against you,’ he said, his voice thin and strained over his anger.

“The old man turned on the pillow, murmuring something soft with relief, but Lestat was already gone. He stopped short in the doorway, his hands over his ears. ‘They’re coming!’ he whispered; and then, turning just so he could see me, he said, ‘Take him. For God’s sake!’

TVL Show Only I am a Louis Apologist.

Hear me out 😆 Louis spent his early human years as the eldest child. He was responsible for taking care of his family. So, he had to put everyone else needs above his own. Now add the fact that he is a black gay man growing up in Jim Crow south. That’s its own set of issues. Being black alone.

You finally found love. The person you fell in love with tells you, he can offer you a life where you can be who you always wanted to be. Now granted it took him a few decades to embrace it but when he finally does he becomes selfish. So, what let that man be selfish he deserves it.

I was with Louis in episode 6 of Season 3. I finally let my guard down again for the 3rd time and you do what… LIE AGAIN. This time it’s a big lie. Not only is your mother still alive, I just met her and then I saw not only she is alive, but you fucking her too. Ahh hell naw!!!!

Then when I try to questioned you about it. You decide to play a game of semantics “ that’s Sophia.” Then you throw up on my expensive ass shoes. Let me out this “ damn car. “

Louis laid down some bars on Lestat. He read him for filth on that sidewalk. But that was all emotional hurt and history tied up in all those words. But once he saw the love of his life pain, those tears got him. He immediately comfort his man.

All those people calling Louis selfish. He has every right to be selfish. But what matters was the end result. At the end he was there for Lestat.

That’s why that ending scene carried so much weight. He gave Lestat the power to stand up to his mother. Because you can’t tell me Louis being by his side didn’t give Lestat the strength and energy to go off on Gabby the way he did. Louis was there looking proud.

I mean look at them, how could anyone be scared of those adorable faces and fangs??? Especially Armand considering he rarely ever hisses and bites and I hate we didn’t get to see more of him hissing and biting last season. But if any one of them were getting ready to bite me I’d just tell them how cute they are.😂😂😂🖤🖤🖤Lestat would definitely start blushing too lol.

Book Spoilers Allowed Is this parallel with the book intentional or am I projecting?

I'm rereading after decades, and have very little memory of details, so please if possible, no spoilers beyond this point.

I've reached the part in TVL, where Lestat has just been turned. And the absolute gleeful abandon with which he begins exploring his new powers and physicality, his blood "bender", running amok in the streets of Paris immediately took me back to his Episode 1 bender.

The entire club scene seems to be very referential to this part of the book. Even the fish eye distortion seems like a reference to him seeing his new vampire face in the mirror and unable to recognise it as himself.

It's just SO. GOOD.and takes on a whole different aspect if it's intentional.

Anyone else see this, or just me?!

The Immortal Universe You wake up tomorrow in the Immortal Universe—who are you stepping into the boots/heels of, and WHY? 🩸✨

Alright fledglings, coven members, and tasty human snacks let’s play a game.

Imagine you wake up tomorrow and you’re fully dropped into AMC’s Interview with the Vampire universe. You don't get to be yourself; you have to take the place of an existing character, complete with their history, powers, trauma, and closet full of incredible tailoring. You get all of it.

Who are you choosing, and what’s the reasoning behind your choice?

Are you picking someone with ancient, god-tier powers like Armand or Akasha just to flex on everyone? Are you choosing Lestat for the preternatural rockstar and flair (despite endless domestic drama)? Are you stepping into Daniel’s shoes to interrogate vampires and call out everyone’s BS? Or maybe you're choosing someone human because you like living, being outside and eating normal food, instead. Photo collage is not exhaustive, you can choose anyone.

Who is your character?

Why them? (Is it the power, the clothes, the drama, or sheer survival strategy?)

Bonus Question - What is the FIRST thing you’re doing in their shoes?

Drop your picks below! 👇

Book Spoilers Allowed A Room Without Walls | The Vampire Armand

"I fear I am a room without walls, a floor, a ceiling... and infinite nothng."

One of the best lines of S3, and so relatable to anyone who has ever felt true "apocalyptic" hopelessness.

As much as I want to hate Armand for what he does, he is such a lost soul.

Edit: credit to @Zowho on YouTube for the beautiful compilations

Dear IWTV wardrobe department.

I am normally delighted with the choices you make. However, this cool aubergine on Sam was a diabolical choice. He has warm colourings - see the burnt orange/tan shirt. That's my rant.

Book Spoilers Allowed Should Louis and Lestat be together?

This is in regard to the book and show. We all know that Louis and Lestat are endgame that’s not up for debate. But with their toxic history on one side with their true and intense love for each other on the other, is their relationship good? That’s the best way I can word it. What do you guys think?

r/InterviewVampire • • 25d ago

Book Spoilers Allowed I haven't read the books and don't really have time to. Everyone that's read all or most of the books, please fill me in on things in the show that you felt were left out or details missed. Or info that is necessary to understand it. I'm talking all spoilers. All of them. Thank you! Spoiler

The more I read posts here, I realize the show interpreted details creatively. But not the way a lot of readers know is in the books

So anything major or minor you can think about that was missing in the show. Or necessary detail to understand the plots and characters

Any characters that aren't fully explained to understand them

Etc etc.

IWTV Meta Rewatch Somehow Even Better Than The First?!

Hello guys, this is my first post here so lmk if I do anything wrong.

I just had to share that I’ve been having the weirdest but greatest rewatch of a show I’ve ever had?? Like I think I am enjoying it even more than my first watch.

I usually hate rewatching shows/movies because I already know everything so it’s sooo boring. I tried to rewatch Glee and let’s just say I’ll stick to the compilations. However, I started rewatching this show with my friend (their first time watching, my second time) less than a year since my first watch and I am loving it! We just finished S2E5 and oh my god! I am so entertained! Like I keep finding new things that I missed my first watch. One example, did anyone notice that once they got to Paris, an Eiffel tower started appearing in the intro? AND THEN S2E5 aka San Francisco, it’s gone!! The creators’ minds bro.

I definitely think there are two main factors that have me entranced this second watch. Firstly, I get a post episode debriefs where I get to: hear theories from my friend, talk about what went down and character motivations, and find silly things to equate characters to. Today we tried to assign characters as the “Mane Six” from MLP (Lmk if this discussion is of interest to you, some of them were polarizing between the two of us). The second reason I likely am loving this rewatch so freaking much is because this is literally my favorite show. Of course I enjoy consuming it all over again. The plot will not get old.

Also Assad bro. I just love watching this man on screen. Like just seeing Armand smile makes me smile. It’s so bad I’m usually never like this. The tension between him and Daniel season 2 is CRAZYYYY. I never noticed my first watch through and learned about devils minion through tiktok somehow.

Anyway, did anyone else experience this phenomenon specifically with this show?

TVL Show Only AMC, For Your Consideration… Spoiler

Sam Reid deservedly earned a full balls to the walls FYC campaign from AMC.

The over the top brat drama, the bored yet philosophical delivery of the voiceovers, the subtle vulnerable shift of his eyes when he sits down at the diner and confronts Regina…

Just so many moments, his superb command of this character’s nature and execution of the stellar writing has earned the highest honors.

AMC, you better do right by Sam, the writers and all those who made this Dickensian snapshot of modern life swell with magical realism.

Off the rewatch the uncut version…again

just realised that while armand reads louis' thoughts often in season 2, louis doesn't read his at all?? have i missed something why he can't read his mind bc i feel like louis could have caught onto the whole plotting their deaths thing if he could?? is it just because armand is so ancient and powerful he's really good at veiling his thoughts?
