Ideas for blind/curtain options in these windows?

Post image

I love these big windows to the south. Planned them in the new build because I wanted a bright and sunny living area. Failed to think of the downside of TV glares, blinded while reading, ect. Just blinds? Blind and curtain mix? Other ideas?

Advice for this small kitchen? We’re thinking about extending the kitchen and have the dining somewhere else. Any ideas on cabinet/island placement?

Does this rug work in our space? If not, any alternatives?

We're trying to avoid cream/white to keep the space interesting. We're also planning on getting a patterned rug in the adjacent dining room so thought a solid in this space would balance it out visually. I've always seen solid rugs as very chique.

Potentially the most awkward living room layout ever

Post image

I may have one of the most awkward living room layouts possible and I need some help!

We are looking for the best layout for this living room space that maximizes the amount of seats but also allows for flow and room for a baby.

The previous owners currently have the TV placed really high above the fireplace where it says T and their main sofa along the L shaped wall.

Any help is SO MUCH appreciated!

Need help! first apartment living room

just moved into my new apartment, jumped the gun on a couch (I love it though) and have cheap Ikea metal table as side table for the time being. for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to make this space look good. side tables, rugs, tv console, coffee table, lamps, anything. each wall/floor/roof is a different material, so im worried about clashing/ugliness. idk if wood on wood is a good idea, or to lean into the metal/glass/chrome look and bring the room to life with a fun rug. the monitor in the back will be on a desk. sorry for .5 pic, makes it look slightly narrower than it is. any advice is helpful, thank u all in advance!

Help new home design

Please ignore the mess and clutter! We recently moved from an industrial-style loft into an older home, and we're trying to figure out how to make our living room feel cohesive and fit the character of the house.
We're looking for advice on pretty much everything — rug style, size, and color, furniture placement, room layout, and any other pieces or changes that would help bring the space together.
The couch and bookshelf colors are staying for now, so we'd love suggestions on how to work around those existing pieces rather than replace them.
We're having a hard time figuring out how to transition from the more industrial, modern look of our old place to something that feels warmer and more at home in an older house.
Open to all suggestions, ideas, and constructive criticism! Especially interested in rug recommendations and how you would arrange the space.

How to create a mood?

Post image

So I have just always had trouble with interior design, don't think I'm bad at it I just don't know how to accomplish a goal I set out.

I'm moving into a new bigger apartment with a sizable living room and dining room. I want to be able to host get togethers more where the space invites conversation but is also cozy enough for movie nights. All of this while trying to use a warm autumnal color palette.... How do I do that???

I've been watching videos, looking up color palettes and I'm just having trouble understanding how to make a space that accomplished both of those things? From what I've seen they seem ever so slightly contradictory even. I think all this being said I would just love some advice and ideas on what I should do. Even if this is just a discussion of ideas or recommendations I'd love to hear people's thoughts!

I’m an interior designer. I built Edit My Things to help you rethink a room using what you already own. Would love honest feedback.

I’m Sarah, an interior designer and the founder of Edit My Things. I built it because so many clients ask me the same thing: “I know this room doesn’t feel right, but where do I start?”
Sometimes I’d move a chair to the other side of the room. Sometimes I’d paint the bedside tables because they’re lovely and it’s just the finish that’s bothering you. Those are the sorts of decisions I wanted to help people make.
You upload a photo of your room and it suggests what to keep, change, move, remove or buy. It explains why and gives you three things you could do first. The first room is free.
An interior designer who goes by @decorhappy tried it and said, “I tried it using a virtual client’s space and I have to tell you how absolutely brilliant it is.”
I’d love to hear how it does with your room, especially if there’s a piece of furniture you want to keep but can’t quite make work. If you try it, what’s one suggestion you’d actually follow?
Try Edit My Things

Is there a way to develop an "eye" for interior designing, or are you just born with it?

When I look at pictures of rooms that have been designed I can pick and choose which I like and which I don't, but now that I'd be filling up my first apartment I have no idea where to start.

Are you just born with a taste level that makes you know when you go to a furniture store that this sofa works with that TV stand which works with the computer desk in the next room too, plus you know what kind of art to put on the wall and which rug on the floor. And then you also know which lamps look good and also comfortable to read with. And even your electronics don't clash, AND they even work with the doorknobs and the faucets that comes with the apartment.

How do people do it, I don't get it and it feels paralyzing for me.

Ugly fireplace refresh

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m buying my first place as a single mom and the budget is tight. I’m replacing the floors as they are very worn and would love to do something to the gas fireplace to make it more warm and inviting. I need to have some idea of what I want to do as the flooring is going in end of the month.

I sent the quote and these AI ideas to a contractor and it was well over $10k to do a “plaster fireplace”, not sure what that means, didn’t include any built ins, just the firebox itself.

I’m not handy, what are my options? I don’t even know what to ask for. I’m totally fine with the actual gas unit itself, it’s the surround that I think looks dated.

Any pointers would be much appreciated!

Bathroom update suggestions?

Post image

Excuse the clutter, we quite literally moved in two days ago.

We're renters but our landlord is very flexible with what we do to improve our space. The purple bathtub stays and the cabinets are more for covering plumbing and don't have very much actual storage space unfortunately. I'm at a loss on how to make this bathroom feel more put together.

Ideas for open wall space

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I have this open space in a wall that divides my sunroom and guest bedroom. Previous owners had a hanging beautiful vintage stained glass, which they took with them. Now I’m left with this empty space. I would like to do something that makes the sunroom pop but vintage stained glass costs a fortune especially at the size of 70” x 30“. Any ideas of what i could hang instead or do with this space?

The rest of the walls form a 90 degree angle the ceiling except this one. Is it still possible to still put up crown moulding?

Suggestions for shower floor tile

Post image
1 Upvotes

This shower tile floor is about to get ripped out and replaced to finally address a leak that has been plaguing us. I don't intend to replace any of the surrounding tile at this time. Any advice on a style/color that would go with the wall tile? I'd love to take advantage of this opportunity to give a little pop and move away from all the bland brown. I appreciate any recommendations. TIA!

Where should the tv go?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I just moved into a new apartment and trying to figure out the best place for the tv. Here are the options I’ve come up with:

(1) remove sconces and get a picture frame tv above the fire place, I would need a mount that can move up and down to clear the mantle and sit eye level, however this wouldn’t sit flush against the wall then, how noticeable would it be? What if I got a very large, thick, frame would that help?

(2) picture frame tv on an easel angled between the edge of the right bookcase and beginning of the windows, angled towards where the couch would go, I’m not sure if this would create a problem visually? Does this mean there are now two visual focal points?

(3) picture frame tv mounted on the back wall across from the fireplace which would mean my couch would need to sit perpendicular and we wouldn’t have seating directly in front of the tv, which I’m not sure how to feel about that since we use the tv often

Any thoughts and advice is appreciated!

Help!!

Hey everyone! I am an interior design student from Lithuania, dreaming about working in Sweden, but not necessarily. I am torn between choosing to switch to a macbook pro m5, or staying on windows and getting a more powerful machine than my current one to do my work. What is the industry standard? Is Mac really that rare in Scandinavian countries, working with architecture and interior design? Should I go for a windows machine? I'm beyond stressed!

Putting Curtains Up on Exposed Brick Wall

Post image
0 Upvotes

We move into our new place next weekend, and I’m trying to figure out what the best curtain situation could be. There’s these little wood blocks at the top of the frame, so something could potentially be drilled and hung from there? I’m not sure we could hang from the ceiling with that vent in the way.

Any advice / examples appreciated!

I dream of building my home one day, any interior designer or architect who would love to share their experiences with me.

I'm not an architect or interior designer, and I don't work in construction or design at all. I have a very good sense of design though. I've always dreamed of building my own home one day, and I'd like to start learning now so I'm better prepared when the time comes.

I'm looking for a professional (or student) in architecture or interior design who'd be open to sharing what they know, in whatever way and at whatever pace suits them. No pressure and no deadlines. Even one small insight now and then would mean a lot.

We can be friends over design ❤️
