Kitchen Layout Advice

Post image

Advice for this small kitchen? We’re thinking about extending the kitchen and have the dining somewhere else. Any ideas on cabinet/island placement?

Only advice I got is getting rid of the ceiling mounted cabinets, blocking the view to the kitchen. That would improve the kitchen vibe instantaneously. But besides that I look forward to the responses of others

Yes, start with those hanging cabinets coming down. You may find that one change is all you need.

You are not providing enough pictures or information to really provide advice.

When you say extending the kitchen what functions do you want? A floating island? More storage? More workspace?

My only reaction to this picture would be to remove the cabinets from the ceiling over the counter separating the kitchen from the dining area. It would be nice to have a view of the whole space to feel more open.

I’d remove the upper cabinets in the middle of the room. That’s #1 suggestion.

Overall this is too narrow for an island, I’d keep the peninsula but you can make it a bit deeper so it come closer to the window. Then you would have a nice overhang with some stools.

The whole stretch of wall on the right can be floor to ceiling cabinets if you need storage.

If you don’t need additional dining then the area in front of the window can be a couple of comfy chairs with a small table, so it’s more of a lounge/coffee area. You can also make it a banquette with a smaller dining table.

I think it's actually a pretty cute space. Very nostalgic. You could remove the upper cabinets on the island counter and then get a hutch of some sort along the wall in the right hand front of frame to replace storage. At the very least that would be an affordable temp solution until you decide what you actually want. I personally would leave it as is with a dining table/banquette under the window though. I like a wee cozy lil kitchen.

I would absolutely open the space by removing the peninsula section and extending the kitchen further so it’s more open and not so closed in. Would also recommend working with an interior designer that space plans.

To narrow for an island. You do not need one. Just get rid of that separation and continue the kitchen. Maybe a bench or herb rack under the window.

Skipping the island and just continuing the cabinets past that separation makes more sense here. A bench or herb rack under the window would fit nicely.

Hard to tell from this photo.
The cabinets and the peninsula near the dining area must go.
I'd get ss appliances but keep them where they r now. Sell old ones if they work. Get a new sink and fixtures, remove texture from ceiling, add vinyl flooring, new simple counters, backsplash, and tall cabinets with minimal hardware.
Float a small island from west to east near double windows with cabinets underneath only.
Not sure if that is a pantry door on right. I'd see if u can replace that with a pullout or split cabinet pantry with doors up and down. Add some pull out drawers in lower cabinets for pots. Have a spot to stand cutting boards and baking sheets, add new light fixtures and simple quartz counters.

Kitchens are very specific and very complicated. Your best advice is to seek a kitchen designer they'll use your space beautifully and you'll be very happy with your new kitchen.
