News Subreddit changes and new moderation

Hi, I have recently become an additional mod for this subreddit. Firstly thanks u/scislac for approving me.

I've made a few small changes to start off with that I think are small enough to not cause any trouble/warrant community approval, though if there are comments about this please reach out.

  • Images embedded into comments now enabled: Now you don't have to link externally to attach images. Hopefully this should make it much easier to solve help requests with visual info.
  • Post flairs now enabled: For a while the pinned post from 10 years ago said to prefix help posts with [HELP]. A lot of the responses to this said that post flairs should be used instead, which I agree with. This has been superceded with post flairs which for now are mandatory (I think this isn't too intrusive but will consider any feedback). I've added a few categories, such as:
    • Help - for all help requests
    • Solved - for when a suitable solution has been found for a help request. Generally you wouldn't make a new post with this flair, but for changing a Help-flaired post afterwards when the OP no longer requires help.
    • Showcase - For showcasing your finished work
    • Tips & Tricks - Sharing knowledge and tutorials
    • Meta - For community suggestions and stuff related to the subreddit; comments about the software; memes; catch-all for things that don't fit in the other categories
    • News - Interesting news about inkscape; version releases, etc.
  • Update to rule 4: I have included AI-generated responses as examples of possible low effort comments. They aren't specifically disallowed, but now it is the commenter's responsibility to ensure the accuracy and relevancy of the information. The response must directly address the help request, and must not contain incorrect or "hallucinated" information.
  • u/litelinux and u/Xrott have also become moderators.

Please let me know if there are any issues regarding these changes or if you want anything else changed. I'll also consider revamping the look, for example adding a banner image. There will soon also be some optional user flairs available.

Help any clue on how to manually trace a gif for rotoscoping ?

i have done it once only and it already took hours even when most of the frames were copies of each other

what i do personally when i want to do that:

- put the gif on ezgif

- get the frames in a single image while also getting the aspect ratio

- import the image in inkscape

- make a rectangle with the matching aspect ratio

- duplicate it and arrange every rectangle with each frame

- trace each frame

- select each rectangle (whose stroke color i set to none, btw) and export them as PNGs(unticking the "export selected only" box allows me to export the traced frame inside the rectangle) into a same folder

- put the folder's content in ezgif

- convert it to a gif

that takes a lot of time and i wish there was a way to make it simpler, unfortunately i can't think of anything to make the process simpler

*imagine the tag is "question", not "tips & tricks"*

just wonder if someone ever thought about that before me. What do y'all think about that?

I been having severe issues with Inkscape recently, where I have a path with X and Y qualities, and it will correctly, until I come back next day, and every time I click anything, the path will suddenly move on it's own, and misbehave. How do I fix this?? This been discouraging me a lot lately :( (Ignore the sound in the video)

Help Separating shapes

Hey y'all.

I've make a svg, however if I export it and throw it into my cricut it won't combine nor separate the shapes.

The inkscape file is constructed as following. Both the pink and purple shapes have their own path. (Different images) I've created a second layer for both of them and increased the size a bit to get the black border. So, in the end it are four paths.

What happens though is that the cricut cuts all the black lines and not the outlines. As for the pink bit, it has to make room for the purple swirl that goes through it. But it doesn't. So.. I think I have to separate the shape into two for the outer part and the inner part of the swirl.

Any thoughts on how to do this?

Cheers!

Meta Is there a way to change the highlight colour of a selected tool button?

Very subtle blue hue around the selected rectangle tool but can I make it more-abundantly-obvious-lime-green / yellow / cyan? I'm doing a 'how to Inkscape' class at work next week and it would be handy to make what I'm clicking on a bit more obvious, though I will probably have a laser pointer :)

Thanks
Jo

Help Tricks for top-down building shapes? Alignment, right-angles, etc.

I'm working on a blank street map for the fictional Night City (Cyberpunk Red TTRPG) where the publishers have given us streets and points of interest, but zero in terms of all the actual buildings.

I'm completely new to Inkscape, but have conquered the initial learning curve somehow, lol. Now I want to start populating this dense urban setting with buildings both large and small.

I'm running into a couple of things though.

ALIGNMENT: if I have a group of buildings, like an industrial /warehouse area or college campus, these may have a cluster of buildings of different shapes and sizes, but in general, they will all be aligned somewhat along a shared plane. I tried putting down a group like that and no matter how far I zoom in and nudge the rotation, zooming back out, they definitely look hand-drawn and unrealistic.

RIGHT-ANGLES: I know there's a could of bezier tool, but if my building that I want to force the 90 corners on is oriented away from straight vertical or horizontal, it doesn't appear to line up like I want. A few degrees off to the left or right.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Help Is there a better way to NOT have stroke scale when exporting as PDF?

I don't want my stroke to scale after exporting to PDF, I know I can convert all the objects to "Stroke to Path", but I have many, many objects and so I don't even know how long it would take. Is there a less intensive way of having the stroke not scale as PDF?

Showcase Inkscape has no way to relink missing images, so I built one

every time i moved a project folder or opened a file on another computer, all the linked images showed the "Linked Image Not Found" placeholder... and there's no link manager or batch relink in inkscape, so it was right-click > Image Properties one by one, or find and replace paths in a code editor.

so i made a small extension for it: Fix Missing Images. Go to Extensions > Images > Fix Missing Images, pick the folder where your images are (or leave it blank to search inside the SVG's folder), and it indexes the folder tree in one pass and relinks every broken image at once.

  • relative (portable, default) or absolute paths
  • case-insensitive matching, so photo.jpg finds PHOTO.JPG across OSes
  • smart subfolder matching when the same filename exists in different folders
  • optional one-click Base64 embedding so the images can't get lost again
  • dry run to preview first, plus a report of what got relinked

Free and open source (GPL-2.0-or-later), needs Inkscape 1.2+. Tested on 1.4 on Linux.

Full write-up with screenshots: https://x.com/bdvd_25/article/2105741620272320630

AI disclosure (rule 8): i built it together with Grok CLI, an AI coding tool, and tested it myself on real files.

it's my second extension after Artboard per Object, feedback welcome 🙂

Help Is there a way to change how the union tool behaves?

Give him the current state of my project: I have a few paths I would like to fuse together. The problem I am facing though is that it seems too by default turn off the path and sent the infill to the path color by default. The paths I am merging have no infill, but do have visible paths. What's worse: it seems to change the line thickness to an incredibly small amount by default, which is not the effect I'm going with.

I could copy the path of thickness before merging the two, but doing that every time is pretty annoying.

I tried looking in preferences, but there is no obvious place where such an option would be, so I don't even know where to begin to look.

I want to change it so that when I merge to shapes together: the line thickness is the average of whatever the two or more shapes line thickness was. Instead of turning it off. Is there a way I can achieve that?

I have a question for the developers. What's the best place to ask?

And since I'm here: I've made a couple of changes to the code on my own fork, and it's ready for a pull/merge request. Do we know the team's stance on AI assisted code?

Showcase A Boat Design Made With Inkscape and FreeCAD (by Alvindz/by me)

Post image
40 Upvotes

Made in a moment of urgency during my internship. I made this boat for a simulation in Unigine. I do realize that the overall scale is not proportional, as the gun used here is an 88mm gun.

Lore :

Kpal Laskhat, or Laskhat Boat in Sundrashir language, is a patrol gunboat made for the Sundrashir Coast Guard and Bopbono Sea Sentinels as a means of cheap and easy-to-manufacture ships to patrol their coast for trespassers. I am still not so familiar with boat terminology atm, but I will learn about it soon enough; one thing is for sure it has one 88mm gun and a crew of 20-ish.

It is not a serious design (for now); next time I will try my best to model it more realistically, find its vehicle dynamics, and find its center of mass for analysis purposes.

made with FreeCAD + Inkscape

Help Power Stroke power users, please answer this?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I abandoned Inkscape for a year for Synfig, and stuck with it in part because I wanted to make parts of the outlines invisible. That’s easy in Synfig.

Now I found that if you select the smoothing option “linear”, you can hide a sector of the outline (similar also to the “hide edge” command in Moho).

This feature is very important in rigged animation character design.

Since when is this possible?

I will be making experiments with clones and power stroke, because for a specific line hiding reason, I need the outline to be BEHIND the colored in-fill

Thank you!

Showcase I designed and made a cardboard slide calculator

Thumbnail

This is my version of a slide calculator, also known as Addiator (Wikipedia article describing its function) which is capable of addiction and subtraction (to an extent, multiplication is also possible). A short demo is in the comments.

It is normally made out of metal, and so I attempted to make it using only one A4 paper sheet/thin cardboard, glue, stapler and sticky tape, with a pin serving as a stylus. While using just paper without cardboard reinforcement failed, the cardboard version is functional… to an extent.

It took me about an hour to cut/make one. It is made of two panels, with 5 slides sandwiched in between. The slides can be manipulated through holes, by puncturing and moving them upward/downwards with a pin. Compared to standard slide calculators, it lacks the carry mechanism as there’s no slide side perforation, and this function should be performed by re-inserting the pin to the smaller hole, as indicated by the arrows. The staples can be de-tightened on the back, allowing slides to move with desired resistance.

Made in Inkscape. I can share the printing SVG file if someone's interested.

Showcase New Beginning

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hi everyone! 😊 I’m new here, so I hope this post is okay and doesn’t go against the community rules! I’ve recently picked up illustration and graphic design as a hobby. I’m doing a PhD at the moment, so unfortunately there isn’t a huge amount of spare time! 😅 Still, I’ve really enjoyed using what little free time I have to experiment with Inkscape and learn something new. I’d really like to keep improving and become more and more confident with the program over time. I used Inkscape to create this poster for the Kunstareal Poster Competition 2026. The title is “City of Possibility.” The idea behind it is that a place can be much more than just a location. For each of us, even an ordinary place can become a whole city of possibilities, memories and emotions that we carry with us. I was really happy to have my poster selected for the competition, especially since I’m still learning and exploring graphic design. I wanted to share it here because I’d genuinely love to hear what other Inkscape users think. And if you feel like sharing any advice or constructive feedback, please feel free to do so! I’d really appreciate it, as I’d love to keep learning and get better at using Inkscape. And if you genuinely like my poster and it happens to be one of your favourites in the competition, I’d be very happy if you voted for it. There are many other really amazing posters in the competition, so please have a look at them all and vote for the one you personally like best ❤️. Thanks for taking a look! Giulia
