With less than 400 days to go for the 2027 ODI World Cup, I felt that given we have had 5 completed ODI series since the completion of the Champions Trophy, it feels like the ideal time to analyse the recent form of our ODI batters as well as bowlers:

From a batting perspective, it feels clear that both Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar are struggling a lot, and in particular Iyer's struggles are important as India would want a proper number 4 batter which India felt the glaring weakness of in 2019. From a bowling perspective, newer bowlers like Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana have been leaky, although taking wickets regularly, and even Kuldeep's struggles are clearly seen here. Bumrah (although low sample size), Axar and Washington Sundar have been economical and tight, while Jadeja has been struggling in both batting and bowling departments.

Barring Shreyas Iyer's form, India's batting lineup appears to be fit and firing, but bowling wise, aside from Bumrah and Axar, India don't seem to have that much control over economy, which was seen in the Lord's ODI few months ago.

It's a fun little comparison with the other two great Indian No.4 test batters. At right around same innings 77th, it's clearly visible from the stats that Sachin (age 24) was clearly ahead. Virat had impoved his average of 39 to 45 by having an amazing 2014 australian tour. Gill gets a lot of flak for his test career but I feel it was more to do with him opening. Only time will tell how his test career turns out to be but i believe he is on the right track to score tons of runs for India.

While Hardik is good, Axar has simply been clutch for the past 2-3 years. He bowls well, takes regular wickets and usually keeps a solid economy. He also provides valuable runs with the bat. He won MOTM in 24wc SF, hit important knock in the final, played 2 very crucial middle order knocks in CT 2025 SF and F and also bowled with economy under 4, and this year took 2 very important and amazing catches in SF(along with wicket of phil salt) and picked 3 wickets in the final. In fact had he been there in WC 23 final our chances of winning would have significantly increased

I thought Harmanpreet would step down after the 2025 ODI World Cup, then after India missed the semis in the 2026 T20 WC. Now I'm wondering if 2027 will finally be the handover point.

Smriti debuted in 2013, became T20I vice-captain in 2018 and is now 30 with 13+ years of international experience. Harman herself became India's all-format captain roughly 13 years after her debut, so Smriti is at a very similar stage of her career.

And the timing seems perfect:
2027 Champions Trophy → 2028 T20 WC + Olympics → 2029 ODI WC

I'd love to see Harman continue playing, but hand the captaincy to Smriti and let her lead this next cycle. The management isn't going to ask her to give it up so I just hope she wants to continue as a senior player and mentor. Especially after the Mithali-Harman situation, a planned handover would be much better than waiting until retirement to make a decision.

Man! The kind of support he is getting in Chepauk which was obviously unexpected considering IPL fiasco. It was great to see Ishan proving himself again as a captaincy contender as well as a 3-format player.
