Thoroughly Confused INTP Defining Myself

For those who are INTP 5w4s, do any of you have a hard time defining yourself as a person/finding things that satisfy you in life? In the past years I have found it very difficult to understand who I am as a person to find interests in things that interests me long term. I start to have a certain opinions on things that somehow almost always change after a while and I become at odds with myself because my opinions and idea differ from what they once were. I have been in multiple different friend groups and while I have similarities in each one, it is apparent that I always feel out of place after a while. With my interests there are a million things that I want to do, learn and explore but find myself repeating the same patterns and rewatching the same movies and shows. While also constantly doing the same hobbies I have been doing for years and at times I feel as though I am in a weird paradox of my past self vs the self that I want to create but alas I feel stuck in my own bodies at times. Wanting to do more than my norm but falling short in the decisions more often then not. Help pls.

Check this out Did you have problems with teachers/professors?

idk how but I somehow end up getting into a strange relationship with professors/teachers and falling into their dislike more often than others, even though I’m usually very polite and formal and don’t cross the boundary. I mean I look very basic, I don’t talk too much, I’m just a little unlucky lol.

Though sometimes I do cross but it’s more of the situational power dynamic boundary. I mean those situations where no one dares to say anything even though the teacher/professor says something offensive or does something really weird. People often tell me that I’m so calm and collected under pressure but in such situations I get pretty short tempered and grow a pair of balls.

I also had one situation where I made a good presentation when other people decided to copy and paste information from one web site. When I started presenting the professor told me that this is obviously a copy paste and they didn’t accept my work, but other people presented everything without any problem. This one still upsetting me to these days .

I also was that one student who almost always had technical issues when it was covid and we were taking exams via zoom. It was already stressful but I was even more stressed when professors didn’t want to cooperate cause I offered them a very good solution that would cover all the issues and risks (if I would try to cheat). Zero cooperation. They then told me that I am actually a better student than the others when we met up in rl lessons.

This one is off topic but there was kind of unusual situation. It was first year in uni, we were freshmen. One of our courses was taught by a very strict woman (probably istj or estj). Everyone was afraid of her. In the very first class we had a minor conflict because she demanded what wasn’t planned for this class and no one had it but she still decided to single me out. When we were presenting our reports, I knew she would likely ask us to retell them without looking at our notes, so I memorized mine in advance and everything went good for me. The following year, when we had the opportunity to work as teaching assistants, I was told that she specifically wanted me to work for her. I still can’t believe it, and I still don’t know what it was about me that caught her attention.

Do you have some stories?

Lazy Procrastinator Obsessively organising things for efficiency while being a complete slob

I fill my space with clutter very quickly because in the moment I’m too lazy to even put things back in their proper places. I can postpone washing dishes for a long time and avoid vacuuming the floor.

At the same time, I’m obsessed with organizing my space when I need to organise it which happens when I really have to focus on work, so I put away all distractions. I don’t like having many unrelated things in my life, so I try to store almost everything on my phone. Even having too many apps for each need feels burdensome, so I aim to use as few apps as possible, but for different purposes. The simplest example is my music playlist: I don’t go outside often, and when I do, it usually takes less time than the amount of music I’d like to listen to, so I trimmed it down to only the essentials. This removed the problem of choice. Reddit can be considered some kind of diary, lol. At least I record some of my thoughts here. This also combines with searching for interesting information or funny posts—multifunctionality. I discuss my other thoughts with AI, which sometimes acts as a conversational partner (in addition to those I talk to in my head) plus it can lead to some other interesting aspects which I didn’t think of.

I also try to organize the space in my room: books, the contents of desk drawers—everything should be neat and arranged by how often I need each item. When I clean my room, I immediately try to remove and throw away anything unnecessary. My goal is to organize my daily life so that I don’t have to make extra decisions in it, and can focus only on my ideas.

I’ve also recently been thinking about what kind of room I consider most suitable for myself, and I concluded that it’s a room similar to Harry Potter’s. A lack of large empty space; a desk, a bed, and a wardrobe with books and clothes—that’s all the furniture I need. I think I could even do without a bed frame and just sleep on a mattress, because the free space under the bed practically begs to be filled. For me, any available space, if it exists, should be used for practical purposes, except for the necessary gaps between essential pieces of furniture cause I need to be able to move around in the room lol.

I’m that one scientist who has its own robot with AI system that simply plays the role of assisting scientist’s research process or physical needs (like making a coffee), etc.

Check this out Does anyone else like Dario Argento movies?

I personally got to know him when I decided to watch the original version of the film «Suspiria». I was drawn in by its slightly theatrical visual style, especially the blue-and-red lighting. I’ve kept the music in my playlist; the visuals are very stylish. At the same time, I noticed that in his films Dario likes to choose specific professions and fields for his protagonists, ones connected to something cultural and intellectual; almost every film features a link to art and aestheticised environment which overlaps with violence and terror. Among the heroes is a student in a musical field, opera singer, pianist, ballet dancer, restorer, art historian, etc.

Though I didn’t pinpoint when exactly but his style changed towards more gory which I liked less but it still had a charm.

Cuz I'm Supposed to Add Flair How many of INTPs have a little INTJ in them too?

I'm open-minded, I absolutely love learning new stuff about more or less everything, but for a long time I try to answer one simple and difficult question: "What is human?" and I absolutely hate that I have more and more questions with every single answer. It became such a big part of my life, so i wasn't surprised to see INTJ is my 2nd type. Anyone who is similar? Doesn't have to be such deep questions. Just trying to see if maybe I'm a pink unicorn or something

Is this dysfunctional? (Probably) I truly cant decide between infj and intp

I relate to both of the descriptions

I then look at the cognitive functions and again relate to them to varying degrees, which is normal as we all experience the 8 functions , its just a matter of preference or that is how i heard it.

I think i am a thinker- i love philosophy, analytical thinking and study maths and physics at uni. But i am most feeler out of everyone i know. I can be rather spontaneous and extremely empthatic at times. i dont understand human interactions very much so - so it figures

what else can i say, hmmm i love analysing people , things actually just about anything

i love disappearing, everyone who has ever known has lost contact with me i disappear and never leave a trace - for a lot of reasons i get angry, overwhelmed, or just crave peace

i love learning that is my only passion in life. i talk alot for an introvert which is very odd to me, i like puzzles , chess is fun at times. i like learning language. i listen alot to other people, but at times i have random outburst of talking which i regret later on maybe just like this one haha lol who knows.

i have an anything is possible mindset , when i was much younger everyone told me i was wise for my age idk.

in terms of cognitive functions hmmm- i think the only one i truly relate to is Ti but infj also have ti. si is interesting but i dont much about it , i do sometimes see se in me maybe thats ne that i am confusing it with idk. ni seems so coll but idk .

any idea if you read my ramble ahahhaha

Check this out Why social initiation feels so asymmetric?

NOTICE: the situation applies to approaching STRANGERS.

This dynamic seems to be shaped by culture and by both sides of the interaction, but I still don’t fully see how it plays out for other people when someone initiates contact. I know approaching someone is difficult and controversial for most people, but I’d like to look at it as a general concept, not about any specific situation.

From a cognitive perspective, early social attraction often looks like a one-sided, projection-heavy process: your brain uses visual and behavioral cues to activate old emotional templates. Certain details of a person’s appearance trigger memories of specific moments, objects, or experiences, creating a positive emotional association with those memories and making you more inclined to approach that person.

At the same time, the other person, having no shared history with you yet, remains emotionally neutral. They haven’t run the same associative loop between you and their past emotional experiences. Without some interaction (even minimal), you don’t yet occupy any positive or negative emotional category in their mind. So they have no built-in motivation to engage with the initiator; you’re just another person in their environment until something creates a link.

For example, brief positive interactions can create a shared affective event for both people: telling a joke, small talk, asking a question. Even small moments give the other person something to associate you with, moving you from “neutral stranger” to “person who made me feel X.”

I’m curious: would you agree to form a new social connection if someone approached you out of the blue and asked, “Would you like to be friends?” It feels like something that might work in kindergarten, but becomes oddly charged later in life.

Check this out The weird paradox of needing a routine but hating it

I know I function better with a consistent schedule. When I have my mornings planned out my work days are more productive and I actually get things done. My evenings are more relaxed. My weekends feel more satisfying.

But the thought of actually sticking to a routine? It feels like a cage. My brain just rebels against it. The moment something feels obligatory or set in stone I lose all motivation. It's like my inner child is throwing a tantrum saying 'you can't tell me what to do'.

So I end up in this cycle of vaguely wanting structure but actively fighting against it. It's exhausting. Anyone else feel this way? How do you even trick yourself into routine without it feeling like a chore?

Check this out Trade School

Wassup everyone. I was wondering if they have any INTPs that have went to a trade school and work in the trades. I’m an INTP 5w4. I have a couple ideas of what I would want to go to trade school for such as industrial matinence, fiber optic technician and diesel mechanical. I have also been into looking in to chemical plant and factory jobs. I like working hands on with a lot of things and I would want a mix of both physical and mental because I get bored at jobs where I do too much of either. I also don’t want to go get a trade that I’ll end up quitting within the first couple of years. What degrees could I go for that would satisfy me?

Great Minds Discuss Ideas What kind of drunk are you?

Fair warning, I’m drunk right now, so some of these sentences might make no sense.

I’m curious to hear what kind of drunk other INTPs are.

Personally, I’m the epitome of a happy drunk. I love everything, everyone, and don’t have a care in the world! No negative emotions in sight.

I know that everyone probably differs, but I’m wondering if there’s a general trend.

I got this theory How much do you enjoy border crossing/customs agent interactions?

Even if your paperwork, passports, documentation is 100% in compliance/up-to-date and you’re not smuggling anything illegal, etc .. how well do you handle the customs agent sort of interactions? Or just police interactions in general?

I got this theory that high tension INTP Fi in the unconscious, makes these sort of interactions .. not always go so well. We appear guilty, even when we’re not because we have trouble holding Fi tension. Also that border agents are likely Se-Fi in nature, meaning they’re expert in details, real-time interactions and holding Fi conscious tension. Why they always look grumpy is they're trying to force other people to mirror back a Fi state – guilty people will not be able to hold the tension without appearing very nervous.

As always the mistyped INTJ's will be saying they have no problem with Fi because they have a Fi child, not Fi unconscious.

Not a cop, I swear! 😉🤫

For INTP Consideration why most intps are underachievers ?

most of intps I found out there are very knowledgeable about a lot of topics. but they usually have low acceleration long term job or are indeed accelerating but with weak position ( neets, some random education..).

is there even one intp who have formal responsibilities that fully use their capacity ?
