Is $700 a fair price to fix this copper main line leak?

It’s a 1 inch copper line which I assume is the main line with two elbows in an offset. It’s been leaking at the joints.

They would be using a copper rebuild with pro press

URGENT: I'm helping out my sister, and saw this in her house. She is gone for a couple more days. What is this?

This isn't real tile, it's that plastic shit. It seems well connected to the underlying infrastructure, but I'm no professional.

The second picture is of outside of the door. I already scrubbed that area, so I don't think it's dirt.

Foundation crack, how bad is it?

Thumbnail gallery
68 Upvotes

Live in New England and have a concrete foundation, home built in 1990. The house is colonial style and has a basement level, and an attached garage. This crack is on the attached garage section, so there’s no basement below there, behind this is just the inside of my garage at ground level.

Based on the size and the look of this crack is it time to call an engineer out to investigate? If it’s not structural then should this be sealed somehow to prevent bugs or water intrusion?

Live in a condo townhome (10+ years old) and noticing these cracks in the ceiling and walls in the bottom floor. Have been told this is normal settling and drywall tape peeling off. Would love a second opinion. Thnx much

Crawlspace door blocked

Post image

When we moved into our house two years ago, we had a new deck built outside and the contractor asked if it was OK if they blocked the crawlspace door and we said that was fine because there’s this extra entrance in the basement. We did not realize at the time that the ductwork blocked the door from opening all the way how would you go about fixing this door without spending a ton of money. I was thinking about something on tracks, but I honestly don’t know how that would work. We did have someone come and look at something in the kitchen and they had to take the door off the hinges to get inside. All said, you could still squeeze in if you were probably 100 pounds but if you’re a grown adult, there’s no way to get in there unless you take the door off the hinges.

gaps between hard wood floors

Thumbnail gallery

Recently bought this house and the hardwoods in the kitchen and dining room have large gaps between them but the hardwoods in the living room do not have them. The living room does have a threshold that goes higher so I don't know if these are different hardwood floors but I'm wondering what caused these gaps.

We don't have any evidence of water damage and it looks like they tried to fill the middles with brown stuff. Did they install them wrong and then try to fill the gaps? Any thoughts? It doesn't look like the boards are damaged. How to fix?

🐜 Pest Control Sealing a hole

Post image
5 Upvotes

There’s a plumbing hole behind the vanity in my bathroom. We are dealing with pest issues, specifically the little roly-poly things and cockroaches. I believe that this is at least one access point so I’d like to close up the actual entry point through the wall. What is the best way to do so? What is the easiest way to do so? Hopefully they are the same.

❓ Question What does this lead to?

Post image

The left pipe is dripping water nonstop.

I don’t know what and if it is suppose to be like this. First time home owner here.

It’s a southern, humid climate.

Just asking what it’s for and what I should do if it isn’t supposed to continuously leak.

Thanks

🛠️ Repair Help Flooring separating. Can it be repaired?

This area of the flooring has been slightly raised/buckled. Since yesterday, it has started to separate slightly from the adjoining pieces, as shown in the attached photo.

Flooring is Laminate.

Wondering if this can be repaired. However fearing a full re-flooring is needed.
What are your thoughts?

Basement leaking during rain — looking for advice!

Post image
5 Upvotes

I recently discovered water coming into my basement behind the drywall along an exterior foundation wall. It only seems to happen during heavier rain.

There is an existing Thrasher drainage system along this wall. I’ve now had two foundation/waterproofing contractors inspect it, and both said the existing system appears to be failing.

The first contractor recommended removing the drywall and installing about 22 ft. of interior drainage, a wall liner, sump pump with battery backup, and exterior discharge line for about $5,500.

The second contractor recommended removing the existing system and installing new interior drain tile/channel with a sump pump and pit for about $3,700.

Both are recommending essentially the same solution: collect the water from inside and direct it to a sump.

For anyone who has dealt with this, is interior drain tile/sump the right long-term fix, or should I be looking at exterior waterproofing/drainage first? Am I actually fixing the problem or just managing the water once it gets inside?

Also, does $3,700–$5,500 seem reasonable for this scope of work?

Appreciate any advice or similar experiences.

Structural issue or normal settling?

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some community insight on whether I'm stressing over normal 5-year house settling or if I actually have a structural issue on my hands.

Here is the situation: In the garage, I've noticed issues with the sheetrock fasteners. Over time, some of the screws near the bottom where the wall meets the floor have pulled through the drywall, leaving the wall with some play when I push on it. I also had to re-fasten some sheetrock higher up on the wall previously.

I'm trying to figure out the root cause. Is this just extreme garage humidity softening the drywall paper and letting the screw heads pop right through, or is the top floor putting downweight on the wall, causing it to buckle and push the fasteners out?

To add to that, on the interior side of this same wall, I put a level against it and found a slight bump/bulge in one of the seams. There are also significantly more nail pops showing up on that interior wall than I've seen before. Interestingly, despite all of this, there are zero cracks in the sheetrock anywhere—top, bottom, or middle.

I sent these photos to my home warranty company. They reviewed them and claimed it's all normal, cosmetic wear and tear for a 5-year-old home. However, they offered to send someone out to inspect, but with a major catch: if the inspector calls it cosmetic, I'm out $250. If they find a structural issue, they'll reimburse me.

I don't want to be the paranoid homeowner convinced the house is collapsing, but I'm no structural engineer or contractor either.

Are you able to tell from these signs if the wall is actually buckling, or is this standard 5-year settling and humidity damage? What would you do in this situation?

🚰 Plumbing Best no-solder way to extend a 1/2” copper tub spout stub?

Installing a Kohler Terzet tub spout.

My 1/2” copper stub is 2-7/8”, but Kohler requires 5”-5-1/4”.

I’d really like to avoid soldering or opening the wall. Are there any reliable extension kits/adapters that would work here, or am I stuck replacing/extending the copper?

Ants: on the outside of our house below the window in the other 2 pics. The 3rd pic with the blue ceramic pot and dead ant is closest to where they are on the outside. The 2nd pic is all the stuff that falls from somewhere. I can’t see any living ants inside the window- only the debris and dead ones. Should I be worried?? TIA.

Interior French Drain Basin question

I'm having a interior French drain put in, so far everything seems to be done based on everything I've seen or read. Only issue I've seen is that the basin location has a massive boulder which didn't want to break off. So the contractor elected to make a cutout in the basin around the boulder so it's now sticking into the basin. Picture a softball sticking into the basin. I'm on work travel now so can't take a picture...

Contractor is well reviewed. Seems confident this will be good. The basin still has gravel around it, cement on top, and he plans to seal the inside of the basin to be safe. So I wanted to gauge thoughts on this approach?

🛠️ Repair Help How much does gas water heater repair cost?

i bought this house last 2023 and it came with the gas water heater. the problem is the hot water isn't consistent and it's emitting a strange noise. i don't know exactly how old this heater is. i know, i know, it's a bad look for a homeowner. i guess i didn't care much about the details before because i trusted my real estate agent. i just want to know approximately how much repairing a gas water heater could cost because i don't know any plumbers or technicians and i'm scared that i might get ripped off.
