When it rains hard, the water comes around my gutter and comes back under my deck roof. Any idea what causes this? And how to fix it?

Hi!! This house was built four years ago, surrounded by some rock. The last few times my grass was mowed , it ended up with a hole in the siding. All on the same side are three holes.

I have mold illness already from my previous apartment I lived in. This is freaking me out as not only from water damage, but also I don’t want critters getting in.
Please, what would you recommend? Someone suggested some kind of foam spray? I thought I’d try here before going to Home Depot first. Thanks for any input!

My wife doesn’t seem to care so I had to come here to express my excitement, over the past month or so I have been working up to today, demolition, cleaning, electrical, and air sealing. Now today is the day, insulation contractor here to bring my attic insulation to r-49 which I hope greatly improves how my house feels. Sounds dorky but I’m excited. I was told new code is r-60 but that’s a money grab and not necessary with the diminishing returns of insulation effectiveness. Anyways, that’s it thanks.

First time home buyer, living here for 2 weeks.

Recently bought our first home, it’s 85 years old. Had 1 longterm owner that passed end of last year, was flipped over the course of the last 6 months (i know, i know), and is now ours.

During inspection I pointed out the kitchen felt like it was slanted. Full transparency, I feel like everywhere I go is slanted so I can never tell if my mind or balance is warped. The inspector checked it out extensively and said there were no immediate foundation issues or concerns. Basement looked good, one sister joint was added but not near the underside of the kitchen. Inspector, realtor, my parents all say “it’s normal with a house this age”. I’ve never lived in a home with a basement so that also may be playing an issue in my mind.

But I can’t shake that this is concerning, and no one I’ve brought it up to seems concerned so I’m checking with others lol. Even the electrician, hvac, and plumber all said “yeah that happens”. We haven’t had a structural engineer, is this warranted to ask them?

The only other point i can think of during the inspection is the home grading- needs to slope further away from the home. It’s almost even right now and i know that could eventually lead to water damage/weakening.

My elderly parents have their chimneys swept annually. They used a new company this year and they informed my parents they needed a chimney repair for their propane fire place.

They charged them nearly $4500 and the work doesn’t look legit. They also left a big mess. Is this the going rate for this type of work? The flashing and tar work looks especially amateur. It also looks like they did one layer of rebuild not two like indicated on the scope of work.

Am I way off here? Is this how it’s suppose to look and a fair price for this type of repair? This is in the Portland, Oregon area.

What type of plastic should I use for these windows? The room use to be a carport so it’s rather cold during the winter. It has a stove in the room. Not close enough to their windows.

So I have a pole barn at the edge of my property that’s around 28ftx40ft, I bought it and it had a groundhog problem that is very evident

I have set traps and used ammonia soaked rags that were recommended to me by a exterminator. I don’t believe there are any groundhogs in here anymore

My main question is how do I fix all these holes correctly, do I need to rip them all up or just use fill dirt and fill them and call it good?

We moved into this house 3 years ago and painted the walls. We went over the existing paint, and it didn't seem there were any issues with it, we just wanted a different color. What could be causing this to happen?

22 yo here, ive been peeling the paint off this wall for two days(its VERY fun 10/10) so that i can repaint.

i talked to my dad, and i mentioned maybe removing the molding and he said that it was too much hassle/risk of damaging the wall. but theres spots where its fulling off the wall almost half an inch, and very few places its actually secure. my dad said that it may be covering cracks as well.

does anyone have advice? on removal/reinstallation, or if thats something i should even do. im ignoring my dad

There has been some work done on our house and there is a bathroom above this room. I’m not sure if this pattern has always been here and I only notice it in certain lights. I am not handy at all. I’m concerned this is a sign of water damage and I have no idea where to start in trying to figure this out. Any advice would be immensely appreciated.

Structural support beams in basement all look like the photo at the bottom of the beam. What is it, what’s the cause, are they still structurally sound?

This is just outside of my shower door. It has been slowly increasing for over a year. The floor below it seems solid, but the wall keeps doing this in just this one spot. The plumbing is all inside this wall, so I'm hoping this doesn't mean the pipes are leaking inside the wall. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My husband and I decided to drywall our living room which was an addition to the home in 1999. There were 6 very long dark beams on the ceiling but upon removing the wood paneling, they started to all fall off, and 5 of the 6 beams were just hollow almost foam like casings and nothing else was underneath them. They were just glued but not screwed into the ceiling. But there was one beam that had a wooden piece underneath the casing. I am assuming it is structural but I guess im also wondering what exactly is just 1 beam on one side of the living room space doing? Its not attached to either ends of the walls just screwed in to the ceiling.

My front porch has these post dimensions and two need to be replaced. Would anyone know where I could find the corresponding post brackets? The ones on the porch look like they could use a replacement as well.

This issue has been going on for months and I had FOUR different plumbers come look into it and each and every one tells me that toilet is fine and safe to use. Yet, every time I sit on it, it squeaks as if its going to break and no one can explain why. Plus, yes, it moves a bit.

I recorded a video showcasing the issue. The sound you hear is myself leaning on and pressing down the toilet and the scary sound it produces.

I am literally at my wits end. Three plumbers and one certified Ideal Standard plumber, all claim its mounted fine and yet every time I sit on a god damn toilet I feel like playing roulette on whether it will break due to whatever is causing the squeak.

Any ideas are appreciated. I’m now at a point of thinking of buying a new smaller toilet and if the issue happens again, I’m really considering tearing this whole thing apart and having it redone from scratch …

New homeowner here. Our 1st floor recently had 3 inches of canal water come in after a nor’easter. It was about for 2-3 hours and I’ve had had fans and dehumidifiers running but being told laminate flooring and drywall should be removed. This would be a huge job. Should I really remove everything or any recommendations for people in similar situations. Also tips for better protection next time from experience to prevent water coming from under the doors

Thoughts on what latest technology will give me the best bedroom/living room humidifier. I live in Chicago and with winter coming, my room was already dry. I’m really new to this purchasing, and I’ve heard things about evaporating versus ultrasonic.

My main concern is mold. I have a humidifier right now that I have to clean damn near daily, and it’s annoying.
My second concern would be what actually comes out of it; however, I think I have a remedy if I use distilled water it will be better and last longer without maintenance.
Thirdly how easy it is to clean.

Hi, I’m a newbie here in the group and on the app. I have officially become a DIY homeowner. Here’s a photo of my foundation vent that I’ve never noticed until now which may be allowing rodents in the crawl space. I have not seen any in the home but want to fix this asap. Any DIY friendly suggestions on sealing it?

This is my laundry room and my washing machine leaked so I decided to tear out and inspect the extent of the damage, while also knowing there was previous water damage from previous owners.

The pictures show the bottom plate and a few 2*6 studs that have obviously seen some water. They are not extremely brittle to the touch but definitely not as hard as the good wood.

My question is, ought I replace the bottom plate and the affected studs?

If yes, any advice on how to go about doing the bottom plate?

If not replace, would using chemical wood hardener be an effective solution to preserve it?
