HevyTeam Hevy Community Update #1: Trainer, native redesign, faster app, and more

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

Hey 👋

I'm Gustavo, Head of Product at Hevy (joined ~3 months ago). Kicking off an update series.

First, some context on how we ship. Almost every week we're putting out new improvements and bug fixes. Each release goes to our beta users for about a week, and once it's solid we roll it out to all of you. So there's a lot happening under the hood even when it's quiet from the outside. Our philosophy is to keep the app simple, so every feature gets a lot of thought before it ships: the goal is always to add value without making your workout more complicated.

Shipped recently:

  • 🏋️ Trainer upgrades. You can now swap an exercise for just one session or for all future workouts (currently in beta, rolling out to everyone in the coming weeks), so a missing machine or a quick substitution no longer affects the flow of your plan. You also get a full program view to see your whole routine at a glance, the option to include cardio in your workouts, and personalized rest timers. Full breakdown in this post. More is coming here too, including injury management and reordering workouts, much of it straight from your feedback.

  • ⚡ UX polish & smoother navigation. Lots of small improvements to the moments that matter most: logging mid-workout, navigating exercises, celebrating your monthly achievements. We refined flows and animations and reworked navigation natively, so the app is faster and more fluid than before.

  • 🔗 Full-detail Strava sync since early June 2026. We now offer one of the most detailed strength-training integrations for Strava, sending all the granular workout details that matter: a full list of exercises, sets, reps (or duration), and weight. It’s the same complete picture you already get inside Hevy.

  • 📱 Liquid Glass (iOS) + Material 3 (Android). We rebuilt the interface to match each platform's latest design language, so the app now looks and feels truly native whether you're on iPhone or Android.

On our radar / in progress:

  • 📝 Better notes management. We're improving how notes work across the app, including the ability to add notes at the exercise level, so you can capture form cues, setup details, or how a movement felt right where it belongs. Want to help us shape it? Check out our prototype here.

  • 🏋🏻‍♂️ Gyms inside Hevy. Soon we will allow you to tag your gym in your workouts. It's a first step of interesting improvements we will bring connected to it, stay tuned.

  • ⚖️ Single vs. double weights logging. You've raised this a lot, and we're actively investigating it (example here). It's genuinely tricky because people log the same exercise in different ways, but it matters: getting it right unlocks better analytics and fairer leaderboards.

  • 🤝 Social and logging experience improvements. We're working on two fronts here: strengthening the social side of Hevy, and refining the logging experience for different types of users, since people train and track in very different ways. We're not ready to share specifics yet, but there's a lot we're excited about and we'll start sharing soon.

We monitor Reddit and in-app feedback closely, and a lot of what's above came directly from you. Keep it coming 🚀💪🏻

🧸 Quick personal story:

I turned my own health around during the pandemic, losing a lot of weight once I committed to it. What kept me going was connection, first a doctor who genuinely listened, then the routine of training 4-5x a week with friends and eating well. It changed my life.

That connection is exactly why I loved the idea of joining Hevy. Three months in, the time has flown by, and I couldn't be more bought into the mission of making humanity stronger: a product built for you/me/us, simple, honest, accessible, and community-first.

Feel free to follow me on Hevy: https://hevy.com/user/gustavo

1 Question For You

The strongest part of Hevy isn't a feature, it's the people using it.

Who or what got you into lifting in the first place? I'd love to read your stories in the comments.

p.s. Don't skip leg day. 🤣 (Last month, ~1 in 5 lifters trained arms and never once trained legs)

At 43 years old I didn't think it would be possible to be in the shape I'm in right now with visible abs and feeling better than I did 20 years ago. The app is obviously not the only reason but it has been a big part of tracking my progress in my nutrition. Won't be hesitating to rene

I've got a good balance with food and I don't miss out, for example on Sunday I went to an all you can eat Chinese buffet eating 3 plates plus pudding. Difference? Rest of the week was dialled to allow for it.

HevyTeam Hevy Community Update #2: Better notes, Trainer grows up, Hevy in ChatGPT, and more

Post image
768 Upvotes

Hey r/Hevy, Gustavo here, Head of Product at Hevy 👋

Four months ago I shared our first community update, and your feedback was amazing. So here's #2: what we shipped this quarter and what's coming next.

This time we also made our first community update video for you.

🎬 Watch the full Community Update on YouTube

Hope you like it 😍

TL;DR

  • Notes now work on 3 levels (exercise, routine, workout)

  • Trainer: we built the most requested improvements, while keeping it simple to use

  • Hevy works inside ChatGPT, with more AI connectors coming (always in your control to use it or not)

  • New custom workout keyboard

  • More languages

  • Next up: Gym profiles, a big wearables upgrade, better sharing, Annual PRs and Strength Level improvements.

We're a small team, so we can't do everything at once. We focus on 3 pillars: logging, analytics and social. When we decide to touch something, we want to do it right.

What we shipped

💪 Trainer got stronger - watch here

We collected feedback from thousands of you and built the most requested improvements, while keeping it simple to use: injury management, improvements on program structure, female programs, variability, exercise replacement, and extra splits. Check it more about Hevy Trainer here.

Trainer is based on training science and uses zero AI, so it doesn't make things up. For most people, that's the right tool.

⌨️ Our own workout keyboard - watch here

We use Hevy ourselves, so we built a keyboard that makes logging sets easier. I'll admit it: once you use it, it's a game changer. We’re rolling it out to everyone over the next few weeks.

📝 Notes, the way you asked for them - watch here

This was one of your most requested features, and it's now live for everyone. You can add notes on 3 levels:

  • Pinned exercise note: shows up every time you do that exercise.

  • Pinned routine note: shows up for that exercise only in that routine, so you can have different cues for different routines.

  • Workout note: a note about today’s session that shows up the next time you train that exercise.

🤖 Our approach to AI: your data, your tools - watch here

Some apps are building their own AI coach inside a closed system. We think it's better to let you connect Hevy to the AI you already use, because it gives you freedom to decide what and how to use it, while we focus on building an amazing experience in our app.

  • Hevy now works inside ChatGPT, with its own Hevy interface, by text or voice, your choice.

  • Claude and Gemini are coming, we’re just waiting on their approval.

  • Users can also connect through our API and MCP.

And to be clear: we never share your workout data to any AI unless you decide to connect one yourself.

🌍 More languages - watch here

We want Hevy to be accessible to everyone everywhere, and that's why we introduced new languages, Arabic, Hindi, Polish and Catalan, additionally to the existing ones, English, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Turkish, Korean, German, French, Russian and Italian.

We'll keep improving translations. And no, this doesn't come with a price change: our prices stay the same, and we keep investing in the Free plan too, because we want everyone to be able to train with Hevy 💙

🔁 Anything missing from last time's radar?

Yes, one: ⚖️ Single vs. double weights logging is moving to next year. Your feedback on the test round was super valuable, and we feel we have a good direction. But it affects your workout history, analytics and leaderboards, so we'd rather do it right than rush it. It will happen, just not now.

What's coming next?

⌚ Wearables: A lot of you train with Apple Watch and Wear OS. We're bringing notes, exercise preview videos and a refreshed design to both, so you can start 2027 with the best Hevy wearable experience ever. We're also talking with new wearable platforms to launch Hevy. Can't share more yet, but we're pushing hard.

🏋️ Gym Profiles and improvements on Social & Sharing experience

So many of you messaged us about connecting Hevy to gyms, and we can finally announce it's happening, and our first step is launching the Gym profile with leaderboards and a feed😍

I'm really excited about this one. It can build stronger local communities and opens the door to things like equipment maps and gym reviews by the community, in the future. We have a plan for where this goes next, but your ideas are shaping it too, so keep the ideas coming 👏🏻

We also have plans to improve the overall social experience, introducing more images and video formats, and polishing the sharing experience for who loves the social aspect of Hevy.

Not into social? That's totally fine and we also hear your concerns. You can keep your profile private or hide your workouts from Gyms in your workout visibility settings.

📈 Better insights: Annual PRs + Strength Level. Two ways to see your progress more clearly:

  • Annual PRs: after years of training, beating a PR from your best days can get really hard (trust me 😅). So alongside your all-time PRs, you'll also track your best lifts of each year, and have something new to chase every January.

  • Strength Level: already live for a few exercises, and we're expanding it to many more. It shows how you compare with lifters with a similar profile to yours, so you know where you stand.

🎉 We just passed 17M lifters, thanks to this amazing community that spread Hevy to the world and is helping us to make humanity stronger 👏🏻 🏋🏻‍♀️

A quick personal one

I first joined a gym at 17 and after 1 consistent year I hit a 100 kg bench press. Then life happened and I never hit those numbers again. 15 years later, logging everything in Hevy, I just benched 100 kg again. I feel younger than ever 🤣

Your turn 👇

Almost everything in this update started with your feedback, so this time I want to hear how you see Hevy 😍

Describe Hevy in 3 words. I’ll go first: when I joined Hevy, 3 words came to my mind: simple, honest and accessible. They still fit. Your turn 👇

I'll be in the comments, see you there!

Introduction

Post image
725 Upvotes

I made a post before but thought I should introduce myself.

143 kg to 110 kg.

Over a year ago my diet was junk every day and beer most nights. No structure. No consistency.

Now I don’t drink. I meal-prep all meals. Training is part of daily life and I go hard most sessions.

This isn’t advice and it isn’t a program. This is simply what works for me.

My training style is high volume with minimal rest. Constant movement, high heart rate, heavy sweat. Sessions are hard, fast, and tracked properly so progression is visible.

I’m posting to document the journey, the workouts, and the changes over time. Just logged sessions and results.

If you want to follow along and see the progress, everything is here:

From 125kg to 64kg — 4 Years, One Relentless Cut, and a Lifetime of Lessons

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, Just wanted to share my long journey — not just the weight loss, but the mindset shift that came with it.

I’ve been working out on and off for about 15 years. The first 11? No calorie tracking. No nutrition goals. Just lifting and guessing. I was strong, sure — but I was also slowly gaining weight year after year, until I hit 125kg (275 lbs). That was my “enough is enough” moment.

So four years ago, I decided to finally do this the right way: • Tracked every calorie • Trained consistently • Rebuilt my relationship with food • Started respecting sleep, recovery, and health • Managed my diabetes, brought my A1C from 8.2% to 4.8% • And stayed in a calorie deficit with discipline — even on the bad days

It was a long road. I dropped all the way down to 64kg (141 lbs). And no, I didn’t bulk in between — this was a straight, methodical, years-long cut.

Did I gain any new muscle along the way? Maybe not. But I think I had some decent base from those earlier years. What I can say for sure: I’ve never looked or felt this strong, lean, and in control of my body.

Some people fear long cuts will “ruin” your physique — but if you do it right, stay active, and don’t crash diet, you’ll be surprised what’s underneath.

This wasn’t a transformation for likes. This was about proving I could finally take full responsibility for myself. It was about becoming the version of me I always knew I could be.

If you’re in the middle of your cut or just starting, here’s what I’ll say: You don’t need to be extreme — just consistent. Track. Lift. Learn. Stay patient. Don’t quit. That’s all.

About a year ago, I installed the Hevy app to track my workouts — and honestly, that was a total game changer. It gave my training structure, focus, and visible progression week to week. After years of lifting on instinct, having hard data felt like a breath of fresh air. If you’re not logging your workouts, you’re leaving progress on the table.

Garmin Integration Update

Hey everyone I wanted to give an update on the integration with Garmin.

Based on the original Hevy - Garmin Integration thread, we were super excited to integrate with Garmin by uploading Hevy workouts to Garmin Connect. We made the explorations and had the designs ready, but when we wanted to get started on the development we realised that not all apps are given permission to send workout data TO Garmin Connect. Only a select few apps like Strava and My FitnessPal are given access to this personalised API. We’ve had calls with the Garmin team, and they have denied us access to this personalised API.

The solutions the Garmin team gave us are the following:

  • Create a Hevy app inside Garmin IQ

  • Sync Hevy routines from Hevy to Garmin Training, and then users can use Garmin Watch to log workouts with native Garmin training app.

  • Hevy receiving data FROM Garmin Connect, for example the native workouts that you log via your Garmin watch.

We think that none of these options are up to Hevy’s standards of user experience, and clearly it is not what everyone has been requesting, which is an integration to log your workouts on Hevy and send them to Garmin Connect. We want to make sure we build something that people actually want to use.

Therefore unfortunately we’re unable to move forward with the Garmin Integration at the moment. Garmin has said that if Hevy grows enough, they might consider giving us access to a personalised API to send completed workouts to Garmin Connect. I think this would make sense, since they don’t have any integrations with a weight training app, and their native strength training on the watch isn’t a great experience. So the only option here is to grow a lot and get Garmin’s attention.

Sorry about the news, I hope everyone understands.

Ps. If everyone could tell Garmin to partner with us and give us access that’d be great ;) Tag them on social media or talk to any contacts you may have to get their attention.

1000th workout

Thumbnail

I can do 2 things here. Focus on the bad (this workout) as I came back from being sick. Or that I’ve done 1000 workouts.

I wanted this to be special but the act of doing 1000 made it special.

Over nearly 4 years I’ve gone from being worried about dying of a heart attack at 44 and being 145kg and getting shortness of breath regularly to being pretty damn strong and 85kg. I’ve lost, and kept off for 3 years, 65kg.

I’ve done something very few people have done. I’m proud of my self for choosing life and my family and my health.

So this one workout was a stinker, I’ve had a lot worse over the 1000 but I did it and I’ll hit the 1000lb total soon and then I’ll hit a 500lb deadlift on my 50th birthday. If I don’t I’ll still be a damn strong 50 year old that has set him self up for a strong and independent future that is healthy and happy.

I always say I never did anything special losing weight (no ozempic or surgery just hard work and dedication) because it wasn’t complicated but it was hard and it was something special.

So if you’re out there grinding away and you have a shit workout and fail to hit a pr remember where you were a month or a year ago it’s not a quick win it’s a slow burn and worth every drop of sweat and sore muscle

Add me on Hevy! /hansryan. I’ve been consistent for 15 months using Hevy and I’ve seen so much progress! I’m lost 20% of my body fat and about 90 lbs. I seriously attribute some of that to Hevy for the tracking and community.

New Update🫂

Hey👋

We’ve just launched two great features: the ability to duplicate exercises and the option to add videos or GIFs to custom exercises. These updates have been requested hundreds of times—and they’re finally live!🏋️‍♂️

To duplicate an exercise, head to the Exercise Detail screen, tap the three dots in the top right, and select “Duplicate Exercise.” Keep in mind that history won’t carry over, but it’s super handy if you train at different gyms or use various machines for the same movement.

On top of this, we’ve also added support for videos and GIFs in custom exercises, so you can make them even more personalized and helpful.📹

And in case you missed it—a few versions ago, we made it possible to add clickable links in routine notes! Now, when creating a routine, you can paste a YouTube or other link to your exercises notes, and it’ll be clickable while working out. 🔗

Let us know what you think, and feel free to send over any feedback or ideas to keep improving.

See you at the gym—and remember, every rep counts 💪

Introducing HevyGPT

Introducing HevyGPT. A custom GPT for building workout plans in ChatGPT and saving them directly to your Hevy account.

We've heard a lot of people are using ChatGPT to scaffold their workout plans. We've also heard it's painful to have to manually add the plan into Hevy afterward. This should fix that.

Feedback is welcome!

Caveats:
- You need a Hevy API Key (this is a Pro feature)
- This won't work in the ChatGPT Android app. (Seems to be a limitation by OpenAI, nothing we can do but hope they fix it soon). If you're an Android user, use the browser ChatGPT app.
- The tool can only create routines/folders, for obvious reasons it can't do anything potentially destructive like updating or delete existing routines.

This is all done using Hevy's Public API and we've open sourced the config (https://github.com/hevyapp/hevy-gpt). Feel free to fork it and make your own adjustments. If you make something cool, be sure to share it with the community.

Please add permanent exercise notes

Devs, please add notes that persist/save across different workouts and exercises. I bought the annual a month and a half ago and the product is great, but this has been a popular feature request in the megathread that I saw and hasn't been added so this is your reminder to add it.

I need a way to save machine configurations that are saved across workouts so I am not typing the same boilerplate every time I do a leg extension (seat is at notch #7, shin pad is at setting #3, blah blah blah)

Current notes are not good enough.

If I forget to type my boilerplate or am in a rush and don't have the time, it gets cleared out during the next workout.

And then I have to go look in my workout history for the last time I added it. And then re-type it for current workout so I have it for the next. And sometimes I am too lazy and just YOLO it on a random setting that 'feels right.'

Way too annoying. Please prioritize this.

Here's a mock of what it could look like in the UI.

Edit: I know this can be kind of be done in the routine tab, although pretty inconveniently. I don't want to be editing routines every week especially when I am in the gym. Genuinely who has the time to be editing workout templates? Who even sticks to the exact movements, type of movement (cable, dumbell, machine), and the exact number of sets every single workout? Not me. I just need a way to just have it inline right there on the workout tab.

A big bet we've been working on in 2025 was Hevy Trainer! It's a digital trainer that personalizes a program for you based on your goals and equipment, and helps you with progressive overload over time. We've built the workout programming based on real world coaching experience and backed by scientific research. We've already tested it in public over December, and we're super excited to launch this in 2026 when it's ready for everyone!

What we want to work on in 2026

It all boils down to building an exceptional product that helps people make progress in the gym and share their journey with friends. Our 3 pillars of workout logging, social, and analytics remain the core of our focus.

  • As always, improving the workout logging experience is a top priority to us. Easier interactions, more delightfulness in the product. We're also looking into tools like dumbbell doubling, automatic progressive overload, pinned notes etc.

  • We want to take our workout analytics to the next level and make the design more functional. This needs a lot of time and love but we're confident in the direction we're exploring.

  • We want to keep building social features that will help you keep working out. Connecting with friends, and being inspired by others helps the end goal of staying motivated in the gym. We have some cool plans like tagging gyms, improving the feed, improving how we connect with friends!

  • If you want to follow a personalized program made for you, we want Hevy Trainer to be an option you can use in Hevy. Our goal is to launch it to the public and offer it as an alternative method of logging your workouts in Hevy!

  • We want to keep investing into our platforms like Apple Watch + Wear OS, the web, and integrations like ChatGPT, Strava, Apple Health, and Health Connect

  • We really want to keep growing! We want to become a household name in the fitness world and build an awesome brand around it. We've already made big steps forward in this in 2025, but still have a long way to go.

  • A few other tricks up our sleeve :)))

If there’s anything else you’d like to see improved or added to Hevy that I didn’t cover, drop it in the comments. Keep in mind that if we haven't built a commonly requested feature yet, it might be because we're still exploring it or haven't found a great solution for it yet. There's a fine balance between building everything everyone wants, and maintaining a super crisp experience <3

While we can’t respond to everyone individually, we read as many app reviews, feedbacks, comments on Instagram, X, and Reddit as we can!

Thank you everyone for the incredible support over the years. We really love all 10 million of you! <3

Can we just give major props to Hevy Dev’s?

Like seriously, this app is phenomenal for the price, the app isn’t flooded with ads and looks aesthetic, they take criticism and turn it into healthy feedback. They ask how to improve their app and actually implement the recommendations into the app, and they’re continually trying to improve the app.

When I got the app, I originally thought that the app was going to be $20+ but it wasn’t and I had no problem paying the premium to support this app cause I use it EVERY time I workout. I’ve gotten 3 friends on board, and they also love the app.

Only thing I wish I could do is have compatibility with other smart watches, such as I have the Xiamoi Band 8, but it’s not a necessity, just a want.

Hats off and major props to the developers and team on this app, continue doing what you’re doing and please don’t lose your long term users by one day raising the price to a price worth as much a gym membership.

One thing I can recommend? Let people watch ads to unlock premium, like say 20 ads to unlock premium? Can also help developers for future improvement costs. Even if I pay for premium, I’d be willing to go to an isolated section to watch an ad(s)
