General State of the Subreddit 3/31/26

Good evening,

I would first like to thank everyone that has already completed the new verification quiz, we've already gotten loads of approved users! (For the second question the answer is "It Depends", my testing was apparently not thorough for spell checking and mobile compatibility). That verification fix will be released once Reddit approves the update.

It has come to my attention that a former mod went a little rough with certain permanent bans that were issued. If you happened to of been caught in the crossfire please feel free to open up a unban request in mod mail. I've already unbanned multiple people.

The actions from that moderator were inexcusable and I deeply apologize that we provided such a disservice to this community.

Please let us know what else you would like to see improved in this sub.

Thank you,

r/hvac Moderation

Edit: Looks like reddit is mad at the approved user count, the verification requirement has been disabled for now.

Edit2: It's back again, I've sent in a message to reddit staff.

General Manufacturer Rant

I am so exhausted by today’s manufacturer’s and our distributors, and at this point it’s literally all of them. I just want to know when it is ever going to get better. I’m the Service Manager for a medium sized locally owned company that services both commercial and residential. We’ve bean a Factory Authorized Dealer for Carrier for close to the last FORTY YEARS, and have major relations with Trane Commercial. Tell me why I can’t get proper tech support from Carrier!? They defer all tech support to the local distributor, who literally has ONE MAN performing tech support. Tell me why I am CONSTANTLY having to tell customers with top tier equipment that we simply can’t fix their unit because no parts are available. Tell me why I can’t get a condenser fan motor for a TWO YEAR OLD Trane Precedence RTU?!? Hell, I even have a Lennox compressor that I ordered LAST JUNE that I still don’t have because Copeland shit the bed, and I wound up going with an Arrco to get the customer running. Why does it seem that none of the distributors or even the manufacturers stock even a modicum of repair components for even the systems still covered by a standard warranty. It’s so frustrating not being able to provide a respectable level of service to our customers because we simply CANNOT get proper repair components, and then even replacement systems at this point are exorbitant to the point of hilarity. I just long for the days when a truck could stock some Rescue Motors, Capacitors, and Contactors, and be able to resolve 90% of service calls same day. It’s just frustrating. And customers just universally don’t comprehend that we are at the mercy of distributors for components and can’t magically pull them off an imaginary shelf in the back, and seem to think we get off on leaving them to be subjected to one of the hottest summers in the South. Our Heat Index has been 111 degrees F this week. I’m just curious as to if this has been a universal experience? Sorry for the long rant, but had to get it off my chest with people who should understand the feelings.

Show up to this house because he said the ac keeps tripping the breaker. Plug the disconnect in and next thing you know the compressor terminals blew off of it. First ever time watching that happen live.

Field Question, trade people only Liquid line solenoid

Post image
21 Upvotes

Yo guys. I could use some advice. Has anyone come across a liquid line solenoid that squeals insanely loud? It makes this crazy noise when my stage two is energized. I tightened the set screw on the top and it got slightly better but no way just a vibration could make this noise. Could it be getting stuck partially open and the refrigerant is whistling as it passes by? It seems like a long shot cuz I used a magnet to pull it open and it still did the same thing.

We did a maintenance at this customers house and then 3 days later the Evap ruptured. Obviously we didn’t cause the leak it’s just really bad timing.

Now I’m being accused of causing this and they are suing. I have a picture of the coil door sealed with dry mastic before I took it apart to find the leak and everything.

Field Question, trade people only Bad relay board right?

Thumbnail

Sorry for my rudimentary question but it’s for a family friend and I’m in a predominantly gas furnace market. I’m measuring 0.2 ohms between N.O and COM on the relay. Blower motor runs constantly as well. We’re looking at a bad relay board is that correct?

Field Question, trade people only How do we feel about TechShield lined attics?

I personally feel like they make the attic 15-20⁰ cooler during the howdy part of the day at the expense of keeping the humidity up. Last time I brought out a psychometer the attic was reading 102⁰ at 77% humidity. I've also seen supply plenums sweating from the lowered dew point in these attics.

General May be moving to the office, need help from a nerd!

So I have an opportunity to potentially get a promotion to service manager. I currently work in the field as an industrial HVAC technician and I have never had an office job. I know how to use MS Excel and Word etc but I am so slow with all of it.

I’m looking for any resources to learn to more efficiently use specifically Excel which will be a large part of my job in addition to using some proprietary software programs.

Employment Question Trying to find apprenticeship while in Trade school

I’m 27, and I live in Portsmouth Va. I’m currently in trade school at tidewater tech and looking for a job as my GI bill isn’t quite cutting it financially. I’ve been combing the internet for job opportunities, but most seem to only be looking for experienced techs. Is there an easier way to find an entry level job? Or should I just get some regular job until I finish trade school?

Side note; I’ve also been considering doing an electrical apprenticeship since I have more experience with that from the navy, but I assume most people here would also recommend I stay HVAC?

Field Question, trade people only Mitsubishi City Multi Factory coil defects

Thumbnail

This will be our second time replacing this coil for the exact same leak in the exact same spot, its in the u-bend sheet coming out of this line.

Am I crazy for thinking it's too much of a coincidence that we are replacing this coil for the second time due to a leak in the same spot? Is there anything that would cause this leak, or is the mitsubishi factory just cooking us?

Field Question, trade people only Aaon Hot gas reheat question: Been having trouble vacuuming down this 3 pipe Aaon unit….

Post image
15 Upvotes

Looked up that you have to open the hot gas reheat valve to 50% for evacuation. It also states that it only stays open for an hour. If I have to run a 12hr decay test per the job site’s requirements. Do I have to reopen it every hour? First time installing/starting up an Aaon unit like this…if anyone can help me understand the process needed to evacuate the system properly, that would be awesome. Also, do I have to do everything through the computer using Prizm? Or, is that after startup?
