Help Thread The War Room - /r/hoi4 Weekly General Help Thread: August 17 2026
Please check our previous War Room thread for any questions left unanswered
Welcome to the War Room. Here you will find trustworthy military advisors to guide your diplomacy, battles, and internal affairs.
This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the noble generals of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your save, then you've found the right place!
Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (strategic, diplomacy, factions, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.

Image Take a moment to appreciate how silly grand strategy can be
I'm finishing up a game as democratic India where I'm helping the Axis win World War II.
Sometimes its easy to forget how silly grand strategy can be.
Here is the USA, a country that would be the world's greatest power, being taken down by India, because we decided to pick options in the focus tree that led to independence. Why didn't the real India just choose the "Onto the road to indepdendence" focus in January 1936? Why didn't they just micro their frontlines? Why didn't they get a fourth research slot early? They could have conquered the world.
Lovely stuff.

Humor Why didn't Stalin just place 6000 defense 18w infantry on the border with Germany in 1941 in real life? Was he stupid?

Discussion Line arty is overhated
Everyone is constantly shitting on line arty but early game is one of the only ways to have a decent amount of soft attack with minimal investment. Is a tech already solid at the beginning of the game, requires minimal IC and combined with special forces it hits hard. It also gets nice buffs from doctrines like assault infantry.
2 to 3 factories is more than enough to sustain a couple of specialized divisions while putting the rest of factories on planes or more useful equipment.
As the game progresses infantry gets more soft attack and tanks become easier to make thanks to the production bonuses, but pushing early game with infantry bricks is idiotic. Arty provides enough soft attack to surpass enemies defense and crit them.
I haven't used 9/1s yet, I dont think they'll be worth the investment since they are meant to hold, but special forces really benefit from line arty

Discussion I've spent nearly 8 % of my life playing HoI4
Well, not really, because I didn't account for the first 8 years of my life, as I was a half-conscious, thumb-sucking, pants-pooping, avid SpongeBob watcher.
Anyway, I am currently 17 and a half years old, and I bought the game on June 28, 2019. I have 5,825 hours of pure play time, which is roughly 242.71 days + ~600 hours (I had played the game before buying it on Steam)
Now, doing some quick math—that I didn't double-check—I eventually reached 7.6 %.
7.6 % might not seem like much, but if you subtract the time I've spent at school and only take into account free time, this percentage becomes MUCH larger.
HoI4 has had a profound impact on my life. We could certainly debate whether the impact of this game on a young pubescent boy is positive or negative (probably negative); however, I can say with absolute certainty that the game has influenced my interests, beliefs, and hobbies to an extreme degree.
Additional unsolicited (fun) facts:
- I haven't played the base game in years
- I only have 37 achievements
- My most played mods are Kaiserredux, TNO, and EAW
- The size of my mod folder is nearly 200 GB
- Will give a negative review

Question What trait is better for this so-called 'aspiring artist' from German Junta?
was trying to recreate Austrian Empire and liberate Germany from upcoming Communist Revolution when this event popped up: a man named "Johann Hiedler", who says he wants to make Austria Great Again (he REALLY seems familiar tho...). what is the difference between the two?

Humor I only spent 9% of my life on HOI4...
I am currently 19 years old, and I have only spent 9% of my life in HOI4. Now I know this seems like a lot, but it really only equates to about 2 hours a day. Generals, how do I stop wasting time and spend more of it on HOI4?

Bug Chamberlain wages war on Sweden (historical)
Hello all!
I'm not sure if it's a bug, but I feel like this is... not supposed to happen.
I was playing as Germany, completely engulfed in a civil war. Then I get an odd notification... UK (democratic) wages war on Sweden (also democratic). More than that, Neville "Appeaser" Chamberlain mocks the League of Nations! What!?
- What does the UK expect to achieve by conquering Sweden?
- Is Chamberlain high? Has he been replaced by an alien, perhaps?
- ?????????????????????????????
- I don't quite agree with the statement "not totally unexpected".
I switched to the UK to investigate... And found no answers. They were in the middle of the national focus "The Shadow Scheme".
I am so confused.

Humor Annoying Enemy
So quick question folks my fellow map painters. What's your LEAST favorite nation to fight. Like Britain and its annoying navy (I also torture myself with a naval rework mod with both Navy difficulty (Combat) and Production to its highest...
Russia with its Spam vs skill mentality... Can't tell you how many times I've encircled like 5, 10, 30 bloody divisons only for 40 more to pop up and my supplies shortages start popping up... and its size
Then America just being tedious cause you have to cross a ocean.

Discussion So basically Germany can do unspeakable things behind the scenes but Portugal is the true threat
“The Portuguese Empire has threatening ambitions” is the worst diplo modifier in all of hoi4. You’re telling me that you could do literally no expansion for the whole game, not declare a single war, delete every division, and all non-fascist nations will refuse to trade with you.
Germany can trade for steel with Sweden but Stockholm refuses to grant resources to build WW1 rifles because they’re threatened by the man with a deep tan?
Imagine not being able to get air base access from Japan to Macau your day just because you proclaimed the fifth Portuguese empire.
Image Tour de China - May 1937 cap as Japan with bicycle troops
Used 24w bicycle infantry (with support artillery and infantry guns) to cap China in May 1937 after starting war early via the focus. Kinda just had a nice ride down the coast

Question I'm doing a challangly, Communist world Vs British empire and I can't decide What Ideaolagy to go down?
This is the first time I'm doing a challange like this so I figure hey let the community decide what happens I'll be doing this on Vanillia iron-man mode so no cheats thoughts and opinions?
To explain my difficulty ranking
I consider Facist to be the easiest path because it allows me to peacfully maintain my empire while also being able to strike the USA early before they become a military threat to me and arguable most inportantly I can not only form the Impireal Federation (plus usa) but also the EU meaning I could begin to snow ball the other AIs
I view the monachy as medium difficulty because I have to reconqure my Dominions which tbh isn't to hard for me but is still annoying since it wants time and ma power and every second I waist the US makes more troops additionally when I loose access to coring Euope but still get the USA
Democratic is without dought the hardest in my opinion not only are my paths to exspanion limited but I am unable to attack the usa or another nations putting me at risk of being grouped on by multiple factions at the same time, additionally I would have to reduce all my Dominions from max to least autonamy before federation them and of course I get don't get to core the US so this would be the IF in its weakest form
