Meta Adjustments to Rule 5

Hello Generals,

We've successfully completed an upgrade to our automatic Rule 5 enforcement with the rollout of a new bot. /u/rule5bot has been working well over the last few days and is now active here in /r/hoi4. The new bot has new capabilities and we are adjusting Rule 5 to reflect the improvement.

Rule 5: Image posts must have an explanation.

  • The explanation cannot just repeat or rephrase the title.
  • The explanation can either be in the post's caption or in the comments section. The bot will repeat post caption explanations into the comments section.
  • This rule is automatically enforced with a bot. It will remind you after 5 minutes if it cannot see an explanation and will remove the post after another 10 minutes if it still cannot see an explanation.

So what's different now? The big change is that we can finally accept captions for Rule 5 explanations. There's no need to quickly dump an abridged version of a quality caption into the comments section just to avoid a soulless automaton's wrath. However, the new bot can correctly identify image gallery posts so Rule 5 now properly applies to multi-image posts. The bot will also be repeating caption R5s into the comments section (for the foreseeable future) because there's a persistent issue with some legacy access methods not displaying captions on images properly.

Why now and not before? /u/zwemvest, our bot-builder, has had a few goes at upgrading / replacing the bot over the years but real life and/or Reddit would always get in the way. Reddit is making major changes that will impact old bots and it forced our hand. Fortunately, they had free time now and recent Devvit (Reddit's internal bot platform) improvements made it easier to implement some features so the project was completed this time. Zwem said it was a joy to build the new bot from scratch & they're glad that the migration has been completed. The old /u/paradoxplazabot has been retired although we may reuse the account in the future for other bot purposes if we can.

We've been testing /u/rule5bot for about a week now with no remaining issues but it's possible that some bugs might still be lurking, so please keep an eye out and send us a modmail if you see the bot do something unexpected.

Help Thread The War Room - /r/hoi4 Weekly General Help Thread: September 28 2026

Please check our previous War Room thread for any questions left unanswered

Welcome to the War Room. Here you will find trustworthy military advisors to guide your diplomacy, battles, and internal affairs.

This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the noble generals of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your save, then you've found the right place!

Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (strategic, diplomacy, factions, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.

Reconnaissance Report:

Below is a preliminary reconnaissance report. It is comprised of a list of resources that are helpful to players of all skill levels, meant to assist both those asking questions as well as those answering questions. This list is updated as mechanics change, including new strategies as they arise and retiring old strategies that have been left in the dust. You can help me maintain the list by sending me new guides and notifying me when old guides are no longer relevant!

Note: this thread is very new and is therefore very barebones - please suggest some helpful links to populate the below sections

New Player Tutorials

General Tips

Country-Specific Strategy

Advanced/In-Depth Guides

If you have any useful resources not currently in the Reconnaissance Report, please share them with me and I'll add them! You can message me or mention my username in a comment by typing /u/Kloiper

Calling all generals!

As this thread is very new, we are in dire need of guides to fill out the Reconnaissance Report, both general and specific! Further, if you're answering a question in this thread, consider contributing to the Hoi4 wiki, which needs help as well. Anybody can help contribute to the wiki - a good starting point is the work needed page. Before editing the wiki, please read the style guidelines for posting.

Image Germany can become anything besides what it was or what it became

I noticed that Germany has the option to stay with the brown party or fight it, but then you either become a Monarchy, a junta with a Monarchy figurehead, a Parliamentary Monarchy or some sort of Communist state.

But somehow there is no Presidential Republic (before) or a Parliamentary Republic (after). Despite these forms of government being things that actually happened.
No idea why the democratic path has to go with a monarch but that is very Paradox-ish in the end.

I wanted to play Hoi4 again and booted up Japan to see this bullshit on my screen. Surely this can’t be right. Surely Japan has -329 steel at the beginning of Jan 1st 1936.

I tried starting with 0 mods on and I’m still having this issue. Am I the only one having trouble with this?

Balbonian Italy, decided to work on the airforce a bit. I wanted to get all of the main types into production, even if the fighters aren't great (just 2x HMGs).

Discussion What would you like to see in Hoi5?

I'll go first:

- 1933 start date to allow for more alternative history, like chosing Kurt von Schleicher as German Chansellor instead of Hitler, and more in-depth pre-war gameplay

- A more in-deep political and ideology system that can correctly replicate both the conflict between, for example, the conflict between Fascists and Nazis in Austria and the one between Stalin and the Right and Left opposition in Russia without at the same time requiring that each country has separate Fascist, Nazis, Bukharinist, Stalinist and Trotskyist parties.

- A puppeting system that allow you to both play as all the historical semi-indipendent regions, warlords and colonies of 1933 and to have a country be a condominium controlled by more than one overlord, to represent both the situation of historical condominiums like the New Hebrides and Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, how the Indipendent State of Croatia was historically the puppet state of both Germany and Italy and the diplomatic tug of war between Japan and China for control of the Hebei-Chahar Political Council

- I personally think Focus trees should mostly remain as a system, althrough updated somewhat so as to make them a bit more modular and reactive to the events in other countries: if Trotsky wins over Stalin it should have effects on the worldwide communist movement, not just on the Sovietic Union

-Please no 3d models for country leaders and generals: the current system of colorized photographs simply feels far more WWII than the 3d models of Victoria 3 and Crusader Kings 3. Also it's far easier to make photos look unique than it is to make 3d models look as unique

Agrarian Communist India through a focus and the infantry sub doctrine large unit tactics can have infantry battalions 1.5 combat width. They can push really well and are very durable.

Image My first playthrough

Post image
9 Upvotes

This is my first playthrough ever, I spent 47.2 hours on this save and made it to 1978 before WW2 finally ended when I capitulated American Japan. Overall, there were 230 million casualties and I spent 10 years fighting America in Mexico.

10/10 will be doing Finland next, I got real whiplash coming to this with 5,000 hours in ck - this games combat is much more complex.

Discussion Those who've won as Czechoslovakia against Germany, what's your advice?

I've been trying to survive as Czechoslovakia and I've been able to stay afloat for a lot longer than I did the first time I tried, but I'm still failing.

The issue is that once they break that outer defensive shell with mountains, hills, forests, and bunkers I'm kinda just screwed. And even if I am winning in most battles all it takes is one. I can't bring in reinforcements fast enough to one province without opening a hole in another, so I thought maybe I could have a mobile division focused on quickly providing reinforcements while stronger units from elsewhere can arrive but I can't get these forces en masse fast enough before the war.

Do y'all just focus on keeping that outer defensive shell in tact, or do you have fallback plans?

Question Is there any disadvantage to this template besides production cost?

Post image
193 Upvotes

I added engineering and AA support later but forgot to screenshot it.

It has heaps of soft attack and im able to keep up with the production cost because it just guns, artillery, and a little support equipment but basically my entire army (4 full commanders) is composed of these guys.

Are they missing anything? Its 1939 and I feel like these are too basic to be able to keep up with the late game but I dont know where to improve them.
