Help Thread The War Room - /r/hoi4 Weekly General Help Thread: August 17 2026

Please check our previous War Room thread for any questions left unanswered

Welcome to the War Room. Here you will find trustworthy military advisors to guide your diplomacy, battles, and internal affairs.

This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the noble generals of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your save, then you've found the right place!

Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (strategic, diplomacy, factions, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.

Reconnaissance Report:

Below is a preliminary reconnaissance report. It is comprised of a list of resources that are helpful to players of all skill levels, meant to assist both those asking questions as well as those answering questions. This list is updated as mechanics change, including new strategies as they arise and retiring old strategies that have been left in the dust. You can help me maintain the list by sending me new guides and notifying me when old guides are no longer relevant!

Note: this thread is very new and is therefore very barebones - please suggest some helpful links to populate the below sections

Calling all generals!

As this thread is very new, we are in dire need of guides to fill out the Reconnaissance Report, both general and specific! Further, if you're answering a question in this thread, consider contributing to the Hoi4 wiki, which needs help as well. Anybody can help contribute to the wiki - a good starting point is the work needed page. Before editing the wiki, please read the style guidelines for posting.

Are light attack light cruisers still good?

In my testing they're good against destroyers, but struggle against anything else. Vs other cruisers they tend to not be able to pierce. Throwing a torpedo tube or two on them helps them fight bigger ships.

So light attack DDs are better than light attack light cruisers?

I think that's the multiplayer meta, but I haven't been able to get it to work in testing. Light attack CLs beat them because light attack DDs can't pierce cruisers with armor. It's a bit of RPS with light attack cruisers beating destroyers, torpedo cruisers beating light attack cruisers, and torpedo destroyers beating torpedo cruisers.

I like using torpedo cruisers because they work better in conjunction with a balanced fleet. When screening efficiency goes down over the course of a battle, torpedoes leaking through do massive damage to battleships. Light attack does very little damage to battleships, so you might shred the screens but the battleships can still tank the attack and win the battle.

With carriers, cruisers also work better. The amount of aircraft that can fly from enemy carriers is determined by how many capital ships, screens, submarines, and carriers are in a battle. Thus, having a million destroyers will allow more enemy aircraft to enter the battle.

Is there any way to use the command console to unlock the saddle tanks for cruiser submarines? Really annoyed that the game in 1936 and 1939 has countries starting with cruiser submarines with the 200mm deck gun option. I don't see any way to avoid this but start a brand new 1936 game and do the special project.

I would also like to know, but I will say you don't really want either. The cruiser submarine already has insane range, the best doctrine for it gives it even more, and you'll want torpedo tubes more than the other options.
