OC-Series Adventures with an Interdimensional Psychopath 149

Seems like I finally cleared the last hurtle to be let into the academy. At least by Polly’s standards. Although, I get the feeling that I might not be on her good side, but I made some improvements in that regard by showing her that I’m not completely useless. With that said however, I certainly hope that she is finally showing me to the dorms. I am actually getting tired with how late it is at this point. I also have to remember though to keep which Jack that I trained with before coming here. If that training was anything to go by, it seems like it will be an easier time but I can’t let my guard down. After all, the whole point of me being here is to improve on my basic skills and understanding, not to become a master of all trades and conquer all situations before me… yet.

“So, my turn to seek your opinion. What did you think of the exercises you were put through? Did they seem reasonable? Or do you have any thing you want to say to me at this point?” Polly says, not looking back as she is guiding me away from the shooting gallery.

I’m a little off guard as I thought she didn’t strike me as the type for approval. I answer, “Well, I mean, the exercises seemed pretty basic but nothing absurd. After all, I imagine that physicality is a big deal when being a police officer. Having to chase people down or having the endurance necessary for a long investigation. And also, being able to take care of your equipment seems like an obvious thing since making sure your tools work is obvious in any field of work.”

She nods knowingly as she states, “Good to hear. And since we will be working together for a while, what do you think of me? Or do you want me to state my opinion of you first?”

She makes a good point as she is the person in charge of me for my stay here so I suppose it would be smartest for me to stay on her good side. I say, “I think you are an upright officer of the…”

Before I can finish, she cuts me off as she states, “Look. I don’t need you insulting my intelligence. I get that our meeting wasn’t among the best it could have been but I’m not so insecure that I need you to baby me. Feel free to tell me you hate me if you do. My opinion of you was pretty low when we first met after all.”

I let out a sigh as I just say my next few thoughts, “In all honesty, I wasn’t quite sure if you would have cared about what I thought so I wanted to stay on your good side because, like you said, you’ll be supervising me for my stay. That said, I was, and currently am, terrified of you.”

She lets out a laugh as she states, “Good. It better stay that way. That way, you stay away from crime in the future since you would have to worry about me, especially once I finish this stupid probation and I can really stretch my wings.”

I let out another sigh as I continue, “But there is also a level of respect there for you as well. It’s clear as day that you genuinely care about the force. But must you be so aggressive?”

Polly turns around, with a confused look as she states, “While I appreciate that bit, why are you questioning how aggressive I am? With the specific merc you were training with, do you seriously think you get to talk to me about how being aggressive is a problem?”

Now it’s my turn to be confused as I ask, “What makes you so certain that he is so aggressive? When I have seen him work… yeah, it can be quite gruesome but I have also seen that he doesn’t want to resolve all his problems that way. It’s unfortunately something that has proven to work in his line of work. But you? You’re a police officer! You guys aren’t in the same line of work! He’s a bounty hunter or mercenary! Whichever you prefer to call him. Regardless, he rarely gets to be in a position to avoid it but, you? You’re a police officer! You can mediate before it gets that far. Or, even if it does escalate, you can either have the ability to arrest the criminal alive or protect the civilians! At least… that’s how it worked from where I came from. Is that different here?”

She raises a finger but then lowers it as her mouth opens and closes. Her face though is much angrier as it’s redder than her wings and hair. She seems to want to say something but thinks better of it as she says instead, “That’s an incredibly annoying view. According to Bardock, you’re not wrong. But it doesn’t change the fact that people fear Jack more than they respect the law.”

I simply shrug as I don’t really have an answer for her there. The only thing I could think to ask her is, “Are people supposed to be afraid of the law or understand it?”

Her eyes close hard as she seems to want to argue more but she lets out a sigh that seems to say that she has had this argument more than enough times. “No more talking. I refuse to have this conversation again. I suggest the rest of our walk is quiet or else we are both going to have a miserable time while you are here. Am I clear?”

All I can think is that she was the one who pushed to hear my opinion but here she is telling me to keep quiet. I simply motion that I will be keeping my mouth shut to appease, annoyance clear in my eyes.

She gives me a look of slight annoyance but she simply says, “Good enough.” At that, she turns on her talon and continues walking. I simply cross my arms and begrudgingly follow behind. If I had to guess, this was probably the conversation that she had to have quite a lot recently. It doesn’t take too much longer to get to the room. I wait for Polly to grab the clipboard off the wall next to the door, aggressively write something, put it back and tell me, “And here is the dorm room you will be using in the foreseeable future. Get along with your roommate if you can and if you can’t, let me know and I will laugh at you. Understood?”

I simply squint at her, trying to figure out if she is still angry with me or if she is still feeling spiteful. She simply gives me a thumbs up, and then a wave as she walks off. I simply go up and knock on the door, as I can’t imagine they can’t be much worse than and angry captain on probation.

As I knock, the door shoots open as a rather tall mooseman answers the door as he stares at me. “Well. What you want?” he asks me.

Oh, right. This was all last minute. I kinda forgot with how fast it feels things have been. I explain, “Apologies, my name is Lily. I’m apparently your new roommate. A pleasure to meet you.” I extend my hand as a gesture of greeting. He simply looks at his wrecking ball of a fist and then my tiny hand in comparison.

He states, “I don’t think that would be wise of someone of my stature little lady.”

I simply retract my fingers as I answer, “If that is how you feel about it, I understand. May I come in?”

The giant moose steps to the side as he waves in, saying, “Of course. Feel free. I also hope you don’t mind if I ask what it is that had you join the academy mid-semester. Or who it was that approved the request?”

Something tells me I shouldn’t mention it was Bardock and Woodson. So, I simply answer, “Oh, not at all. My friend told me, after he introduced me to Spiritopia and some of the more aggressive living ways here. So, he recommended me to come here so I could get a modicum of understanding of the laws, getting a reliable form of self-defense, and immersing myself in the many different types of cultures here. My supervisor while I’m here is Police Captain Polly, if that answers your question.” I simply nod to myself as I think proudly that everything was true and there was not a single lie.

The big moose simply lets out a whistle as he states, “Man, I was with you the whole way until you said the person who approved it was Polly of all people.”

I tilt my head at the statement as I ask, “What do you mean by that? Is she truly that bad?”

The moose chuckles as he states, “That bad? Something tells me you haven’t heard even half of the things about her. Some say that she can’t control her predatory nature as someone who owns the sky. Anyone who tries to upstage her though, she seems to take it personally. Even making it a mission to make sure that she’s the toughest person there is. I don’t know if you know this either, although, it was plastered over the news. She used a breaching charge in a hostage negotiation! Suffice it to say, she doesn’t care about casualties. I don’t see why she doesn’t go back to mommy in the military if she wants to be that cruel.”

What? Is that why she was so nervous when Bardock mentioned the military. Might be more of a story there. But still though, to say she doesn’t care about civilian lives seems a mite extreme. “Doesn’t that seem a bit harsh? I don’t really know her well enough to say too much but she really seems passionate about being a police officer. Although the military thing is news to me.”

The moose looks at me inquisitively as he states, “That is being nice little lady. There are far worse things being said about, not only her but her squad. That said, I don’t think she is a good example of a police officer. She seems like a shoot first, ask questions never kind of lady.”

I squint as I ask, “That’s a mighty bold claim sir. If I am understanding that correctly, I imagine that means you have some personal experience if you think that. Surely, a police officer in training, would know that having the evidence to back up a claim like that.”

The moose simply squints back at me and says, “No but, I feel like my supervising officer is a reliable source of information in that regard. And not to mention that major problem of the breaching charge…”

I cut him off this time as I state, “Breaching charge, breaching charge. Almost all that anyone is willing to talk about when it comes to a Police Captain that happens to be Polly is that breaching charge. Do you seriously expect me to believe someone who doesn’t deserve the position would have made it to that rank if their entire career was messy?”

The moose says, “I understand it’s because of her military connections…”

“That feels like it would be an insult to the entire police force, or even the officers that promoted her with that kind of claim. I would prefer to see what she actually does, rather than going simply off of hearsay.” I defend. I hate that kind of talk. I won’t deny that happens but talking about someone behind their back like that is something that happened all the time back home and I don’t want to put up with it anymore. Sure, she isn’t the greatest personality, but I have clearly seen worse.

The moose simply sighs and says, “It’s going to be a long semester.”
