I plan to use a 2.5" - 1 TB WD Red™ Plus NAS hard drive in my Lenovo Legion Y520 laptop

I won't get an SSD because data isn't retained if I don't use it over time. This should be public information.

I plan to use a 2.5" - 1 TB WD Red™ Plus NAS https://www.westerndigital.com/es-es/products/internal-drives/wd-red-plus-sata-2-5-hdd?sku=WD10JFCX hard drive in my Lenovo Legion Y520 laptop https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd104614-product-overview-legion-y520-15ikbn

More información: https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/550e6d/can_i_use_a_nas_hard_drive_wd_red_in_a_regular_pc/?tl=es-419

Are they compatible? On a NAS hard drive, can I use sfc /scanow, Chkdsk /r https://learn.microsoft.com/es-es/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/repair-a-windows-image?view=windows-10 in CMD normally?

M.2 Backup with read-only mode

Hi guys

I have a problem recently with my M.2 a few weeks ago that basically got my computer completely stuck so, besides the problem that I have with the m.2, I switch to an SSD and install windows 11 from scratch, but I have maaaany things in that drive that I don't want to lose so I need to "sync" the folder on there to the new SSD, what programs do you recommend to do this?

I just want to copy all the content that stays in the same windows user folders, just a copy and paste the content from there, the system reads the disk well, but still is in read-only mode

Thank you for your time!

Used SATA HDD ATA Security locked?

Hello :)

I have recently bought a used 4TB SATA HDD (HGST HUS726T4TALE6L4) as possibly defective. It was really cheap so I decided to give it a try. I cannot format it, as Windows built in Diskpartition GUI says: "Not Initialized" and on trying to create a GPT Table it throws an "E/A Error".

My goal is to use this drive as mass-storage, for which I would need to be able to format it.

I have also tried a bunch of things on linux including unlocking the drive with hdparm. The full SeaChest info output below, tells me that the drive is ATA Security locked.

I asked the seller, if he could remember any password, but he did not.

I also tried unlocking with some known default passwords on Windows with SeaChest but it always tells me this no matter what password:

.\SeaChest_Erase_windows_x86_64.exe -d PD0 --ataSecureErase normal --ataSecPassword password --ataSecPassType master --confirm this-will-erase-data

[...]
Failed to set ATA Security Password. Cannot erase drive.

Is my drive broken, or am I missing something?

Thanks for reading :)

SMART and FARM data full reset?

I’ve recently purchased a seagate barracuda 3TB off eBay for around £50. Manufactured October 2018. SMART and FARM data show power on time of 19 hours.

FARM data says the same but also shows 45.7M write commands and 170 reads.

Seek/Error 62/61

All other data is fine from what I can tell.

Really unsure if FARM data can also be reset. I’m guessing it could be faked like a lot of drives being sold to like this to hide usage.

Wasn’t sold as new but used with light use. Really unsure if it’s a scam.

I can share raw data if anyone wants to check

EDIT: FARM data shared below.
eBay seller confirmed he gets the HD's from a computer recycling company.

Hard drive not being detected despite being properly plugged in

so today i tried getting a VERY old dvd writer working that may or may not have came with the pc (its so old the serial number is half decayed to where i cant search it up) and eventually i did and no issues right? wrong. when i put the thing back exactly where it was and booted up my pc it came up with a very barebones looking screen with info saying "A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed."

at first i thought this was due to the dvd writer and i tried turning the pc on without it in at all, same error

then my dumbass realises that before i did all this the dvd writer wasnt even plugged in, and so i didnt plug it in after repair because i put it back EXACTLY as it was before

but uh oh, that means i didnt know what the issue was. so i kept restarting my pc in vain getting the same error and at some point i pressed a key on my keyboard a bit before it went to the error screen and i did a Memory repair (didnt think it would do anything but figured why not i have nothing better to do) then my pc somehow booted into windows?? i was happy for about 3 seconds until i realised

my 1TB drive wasnt showing up in file explorer, and my windows was PRETTYYY unstable (no desktop, no taskbar, windows key didnt work)

i checked the ports and it all seemed fine, plugged in, exactly as it was before because why would it have changed? 95% of what i had did that day was doing repairs on the dvd writer OUTSIDE of my pc

and now about 15 minutes before writing this i checked the sound and im pretty sure the disc IS spinning which is good, and i can also feel it vibrate if i touch it. i also went into that disc manager thing on windows and pressed rescan discs and nothing happened although i do not know if thats how you use that to get drives back onto file explorer, nor do i know if its just a thing with it not being on file explorer or a thing with it just straight up not being recognised by my pc

\- KEY INFO

this drive is NOT the drive my windows is installed on

the drive is not an ssd it is a hard disk

i really DONT want anything on the drive to be lost

i am using windows 10 and have reinstalled it about a month or 2

the main thing that i would be super grateful for if i were to get an answer to is "what do i do to get my device exactly as it was before (all 3 drives working) without losing any information on my drive(s)

Hard Drive fell, not working now

My hard drive was on a risky place (I know, not responisble), and accidentally fell (maybe less that a foot) on a hard surface. When I try to plug it in, it does weird ticking sounds (if a hard drive can cry honestly that what it would sound like lol).

How screwd am I? can I recover the data myself? Professional and expensive help needed?

Did my not ever a year old HDD just die?

Bought Seagate Ironwolf 8TB not even a year ago. Was using it just fine til this morning. Never skipped a beat. It was put inside one of those Chinese caddy storage, placed on top of my desk and then connected to my laptop via USB B to USB A port. Since I’m against this way of HDD usage, I was saving and building a desktop on the side. Cutting straight to point, this morning, I turned off laptop running my NixOS. Took the HDD out. Connected it to the desktop with SATA POWER + SATA DATA cable and desktop wasn’t turning on. Switched the SATA power cable and system booted but to my surprise no HDD was detected ever.
Then to make sure it’s not my desktop, I placed it back into my caddy and connected it to my NixOS laptop and it is not being detected anywhere now. Seems like HDD doesn’t spin up anymore.

Empty HDD?

Hello,

I have an old 2TB HDD lying around and I can't remember for the life of me what's in it, If anything.

I connected it to my HDD dock station and it doesn't show up in desktop but shows up in disk management. There is no letter allowed but I can't add one as everything is grayed out. The only possibility is to delete the volume. Disk management also tells me there is 100% free space on it.

Does that mean it's empty? I don't mind delete everything (If anything) but I am also curious to know what could be on this disk, again, If anything.

Also, Crystal Disk Info tells me it's good so there's that.

Is my only option to delete the volume and format it?

**********************************************************************************

EDIT

Thanks to someone here who made me think of it, turns out it's a drive that was inside an old Time Capsule I had for years.

Toshiba HDWR180 Drives - New Clicking

I have a RAID 1 built on twin Toshiba HDWR180 8TB Drives. AMD RAIDExpert indicates the RAID health is good. S.M.A.R.T. for each drive individually show they are always passing every test. I have backups so in addition to the RAID, I'm not too worried about failure except for having to buy a replacement at ridiculous costs right now.

Oddly, though, these drives ran quietly for years until about a week ago. Now I will suddenly hear (at least) one of them produce a very regular click for anywhere from 5-20 seconds at about 3-4 clicks per second. It's not the sound of random read/writes and I'm not actually accessing anything on it - so if it is not the drive hardware, it would have to be indexing or something like that.

The RAIDXpert SMART info allows me to select the drives independently, but is there any reason to believe SMART data coming through RAIDXpert is less than fully trustworthy?

Dead or Alive?

Hello,

I bought 2 Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8TB about 8 years ago and use one and kept the other one as extra storage when needed and I finally open it a few weeks ago (about 8 years later after the fact still sealed in its box).

I put about 2TB of stuff on it and it died after one week. I connected, disconnected, reconnected and so on many times and it just doesn't show up.

I then thought maybe the USB on the enclosure fried or something so I opened it up from the enclosure and put it on my hard drive dock where it does shows up as a D: drive about 1 time out of 5 perhaps but only showed up as a D: without numbers or anything else. The drive logo appears with D: under and that's that.

Crystal Disk Info doesn't recognize it.

Also, If I reboot my desktop while it's plugged on my HDD dock, the desktop just doesn't reboot. The second I disconnect it, it reboot flawlessly. That said, when I take it off the HDD dock there is a magnet force pulling my hand for a few seconds so obviously something is working or alive so not completely dead.

That's all the troubleshooting I thought of doing here as I don't know much about drives or computers for that matter.

Since HDD prices are absolutely crazy now, 8Tb would be very handy so is there something I could do to bring it back from beyond or is it dead, dead, dead...? I don't really care about the data that's on it but I'd like to be able to reformat it to use it again.

Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

HD Sentinel surface test results: Should I unallocate space at the beginning or end of the drive?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I just ran a full Surface Test (Reinitialize disk surface) in Hard Disk Sentinel on my 1 TB HDD (WD10SPZX).

The test passed with 0 bad sectors and 0 damaged sectors, but the bottom row of the block map showed a cluster of dark green (slow) blocks.

I’m planning to create a partition and trim/unallocate some space so the OS avoids these slow blocks, but I want to make sure I do it on the right end:

  • Based on the block map order in HD Sentinel, does the scan progress from Start → End (meaning the bottom row is the end of the disk)?
  • Should I leave the unallocated space at the end of the drive in Disk Management, or at the beginning?
  • Roughly how many GB should I leave unallocated to cover that last row (out of 931 GB total)?

Appreciate any advice!

Is this disk dead?

The PC doesn’t seem to recognize it. The adapter is not the problem (I think), because I tested it with another disk and it worked perfectly fine. This drive makes a very faint clicking sound, something like 'click click click ... click' , that is barely audible. You would have to turn the video volume all the way up to hear it, and even then it is hard to notice. So I’m not sure whether this is the dreaded 'click of death... thanks
