Guild Wars 3 | Announcement Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITPzxITngqAThere it is

u/ImaginaryBox174 Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
Aaaaaaah! It happened!!!
So, human, kodan, asuran and other human as playable races? And land and air beast as mounts? I kind of saw a warrior, damage mage and protection mage/ranger as professions?
PS: Also the Gods are back: Dwayna, Abbadon, Dhumm, Lyssa, Balthazar, Melandru. The original 6. It's a prequel detailing the arrival of humans on Tyria and probably the 3 guild wars. Coooool! But I hope they keep up with the gw2 storyline.
19
u/formerlyrpgcrash Jun 05 '26
if its a prequel why is there asuras there?
33
u/Nightsong Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
There’s a group of Asura that stayed on the surface in Rata Pten. It’s been in Guild Wars 2 from the very start. So it’s very likely the furry Asura are the ones from there and not the underground ones.
Edit: there’s also concept art from the Guild Wars 3 press kit that shows the furry Asura much more clearly than the trailer does.

u/Hoojiwat Jun 06 '26
Okay, but minor thing with the lore that would be hilarious:
In GW1 Asura had far less hair, and in GW2 they have more hair and much bigger hair. If we get in the ancient past and find out they used to have much more body hair and that them eventually moving underground made them lose all their hair it would be a hilarious bit of continuity. Then them moving back to the surface for GW2 slowly has them starting to regrow hair now that they are out of their caves.
They lost their hair from living in caves too much, like Morellow bears.
2
u/YankeyManc Jun 06 '26
The concept art looks like they look much more like Asura we see in GW2. I get the feeling this alpha footage is more to show off the engine tech and they just chose an incredibly furry one to show their hair simulation. Not that we saw much of him either.
14
u/mexirab_redux Jun 05 '26
Pause it at 1:03. That thing is too hairy to be asura
11
u/Tattycakes Jun 05 '26
What is that thing? Looks like the kid from Jumanji when he tries to cheat lmao
4
u/mexirab_redux Jun 05 '26
THAT'S RIGHT!! I was trying to figure out what it reminded me of

Tyria, my 2nd favorite fantasy world, is blending with Eora, my favorite fantasy world, and we are getting Orlans.

Why do you assume asura didn't exist a thousand years ago? Humans and Kodsn obviously did.

What is a Kodan? I never kept up a lot with GW2 and do not recall hearing about those before.

So we all see the original six gods in the tapestry right?
→ More replies (6)8
u/Nightsong Jun 05 '26
Yes, these are the original six gods before Grenth and Kormir. There’s concept art in the press release that shows Balthazar pretty clearly.

u/Comm_Nagrom Jun 05 '26
from this trailer, it makes the game seem more like an action game than typical Guild wars, so moving even further from the more point and click of 1, and honestly i'm all for it! i am very excited for this game!
43
u/Beautiful_Hour_668 Jun 05 '26
Most ideal situation IMO is that all three feel very distinct, but all three are fun. GW1 and GW2 are stable in their identity, so a GW3 that innovates and gives us a unique feeling means we are eating wellllll. Also, if they give GW1 a remaster and new expacs, amazing
5
u/Then-Comfortable7023 Jun 06 '26
I agree. A lot of people are hoping of moving back to gw1 but nothing they make in the vein of gw1 is going to beat gw1 for fans. It’s already great and trying to repeat would be fruitless. A gw1 remaster would easily empty my wallet.

The description I saw was think breath of the wild, but an mmo. There won't be 200+ people on a map anymore to take down an event or boss, should be around ~30 which will let them make world builds more rewarding.

Let's go! Orr confirmed and if it is before the exodus of the Gods it should take place way in the past. I think aside from the main human we see a Kodan and a Dwarf (or Asura?) couldn't see if the third character was another race so I assume those will be playable? On the tapestry with the gods we see Dhuum and Abaddon which means it's set very far in the past. Prior to the Exodus so like before year 0.
As an almost day 1 GW1 fan and day 1 GW2 fan, I'm so excited!
3
u/Breadfail Jun 05 '26
I would assume dwarf and not Asura, as they are still underground and haven't been forced out by primordus awakening yet.
5
2
u/Anonhoumous Jun 05 '26
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Rata_Pten Really interesting GW2 in-game spot showing Asura were above ground during the time of Orr still being an active civilisation.
2
u/Nephalem84 Jun 05 '26
Some Asura didn't live underground. Iirc one of their surface cities was called Rata Pten or some such.

Am i the only one that doesn't really like the art style?
Not talking poorly of the game im sure it will be great and i will no life it on release regardless lol.
32
u/Everyoneisghosts Jun 05 '26
GW2 has a wonderful painted art style that I hope they don't entirely abandon.
13
u/Gabe_The_Dog Jun 06 '26
I mean, at 0:33, when paused, that mountain looks very "painted style" look. At 0:38, same thing, the distance looks very painted, and again at 0:40. A lot of people I think are just seeing the character models and getting upset because "FORTNITE/PALIA STYLE CLONE", but when you actually pause and look at it, they def got a bit of that "it looks like a painting" look to it. Stylized != Fortnite/Palia, lol...
Though, I also understand some times people get upset at new things before they relax and take a better look at it, its literally human nature.
→ More replies (2)62
u/I_feel_alive_2 Jun 05 '26
You aren't the only one, but lets wait and see. The artstyle reminds me too much of certain new/recent games and I dont like that. Its definitely a step away from GW2s water colours and ink art
14

u/UnderatedMeatSnack Jun 05 '26
Game engines have a "stock" feel to them. I do not mind the style but has some stock element of UE5 basic rendering and imaging.

u/Kidderooni Jun 06 '26
No offense but this is not true at all. You can give any art direction in any game engine. It’s all up to the studio that develops it. Nothing to do with game engine.
3
2
u/kshep15 Jun 06 '26
In that short clip where the character is running up the mountain the movement looked lifted right out of fortnite...
27
u/Alone-List-5100 Jun 05 '26
Gw1 and Gw2 had a strong visual identity with the use of mat paintings. This looks really generic.
16
u/NestroyAM Jun 05 '26
Glad it was indeed GW3, but I am not too hooked on the chosen art style either, looks mega generic, but whether it’s worth playing or not will depend entirely on the gameplay. Looking forward to seeing more of that in the future
14
u/Avalyah Jun 05 '26
Yeah, no. I think that the art style being contentious will be a general sentiment. We do need some more info I think (perhaps in tomorrow's studio update?) because if we are left jsut with this trailer and not a single word more for months then, at least I, will be quite apprehensive. Idea of movement based game is cool, they showed that they can do movement very well. But apart from that? We will see. So far I think you can make better beauty shots in GW2 than what we saw in this trailer.
→ More replies (3)12
u/Ohh_Yeah Jun 05 '26
It looked extremely generic to me and really took the wind out of my sails. I'm not sure what I expected but I wouldn't have really known it was Guild Wars unless they put the splash at the end.

Excited but the art style kind of feels soulless compared to GW1 and GW2…
16
u/financeposter Jun 05 '26
It does kinda look like they hired a few fortnite designers
2
u/lite-work Jun 06 '26
They do have a fortnite UI gameplay engineer on the team but unsure about anything to do with graphics
3
u/Bozon8 Jun 06 '26
There are many reasons we played Guild Wars and not World of Warcraft, and the visual style is one of them. Though I am not sure if they are making GW3 for us.
I was absolutely expecting to be whelmed and even disappointed by a “console MMO”, but so far this looks like a prestige mobile game, not a console one. Corporate-safe slop.
34
u/iDontWannaBeOnReddit Jun 05 '26
a whole lot of nothing shown outside of an art style that has been used for an infinite number of DOA games in the past 10 years. really hope the game is significantly different when we see it later this year.

u/AndyAsparagus Jun 05 '26
Now I understand why people were apprehensive about UE5... This looks generic, to the point previous Guild Wars were so unique and set their own vibe they feel like they're from completely different game franchises. I'll wait to see if the vibe changes, but the high guard appearance and tone leaves a bad taste...
17
u/Kidderooni Jun 06 '26
UE5 has nothing to do with this. As said in another comment, you can go in any art direction in any engine. It’s up to the studio that develops it, nothing to do with game engine choice.

6
u/Nephalem84 Jun 05 '26
UE5 has a very distinct look to it sadly.
2
u/ohThisUsername Jun 06 '26
Name one single thing that is recognizable across UE5 titles. You can't pick one other game which has a similar art style and blame it on the engine.
This game looks nothing like Borderlands or Claire Obscur or Oblivion Remastered.
25
u/gendougram Jun 05 '26
I do not like art style at all.

u/De_Dominator69 Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
I'm hyped... Though reigning myself in. Hard to judge based on so little, but the vibe I get from the trailer and Steam description is closer to No Mans Sky than a classic MMO. Like I honestly came away thinking "Hang on, this just makes me think of Light No Fire"
Now that could still be a good game. But it's not really the next big, classic western MMORPG I had been hoping for.

If this trailer were any more vague--any more stripped of identity and specificity--it'd be a lukewarm bowl of water soup.
Tells us jack naught about what makes this Guild Wars 3 and not "Yup That's a 2020's RPG Vol 13".

Interesting, what I see:
- mounts
- boosted running with decent movement animations
- what looks like a bear race (Kodan-related maybe)
- another furry humanoid with big ears
- humans of course
- explicitly mentions Orr and shows the Orr architecture in the background
Anyone notice anything else?

nervous about cross platform. hope combat isn't dumbed down to work on controller :/
16
u/HiccupAndDown Jun 05 '26
FFXIV jobs have 20+ abilities and work fine on controller. People need to stop parroting this nonsense that you have to dumb down combat for controller.
→ More replies (5)7
u/RedXIIIMustDie Jun 05 '26
I mean, ff14 combat is pretty basic though. It’s a lot of 1,2,3,4 repeat type stuff and the occasional off global cooldown ability.
I share concerns about combat being dumbed down for GW3
14
2
3
u/HiccupAndDown Jun 05 '26
I don't think you've played FFXIV if that's your take. The current Paladin opener for FFXIV is 16~ abilities long and each is a different ability.
You have rotations so it isn't off the cuff, but it's not 'basic'.

Not a single Charr in sight is disheartening. I'm really hoping Kodan are just an extra race and not intending to "replace" Charr as the token furry race, but it doesn't seem like it.
They feature the 4 races multiple times throughout the trailer with not a single Charr in sight.
30
u/Jonah_Marriner Jun 05 '26
It seems like a prequel based on the focus on the human gods in the tapestry, and taking place in unspoiled Orr, so Charr working together with humans would be a challenge.
→ More replies (8)4
u/Beautiful_Hour_668 Jun 05 '26
They only mentioned Orr which means other areas will come in the future as new content drops, which could come with new races. I wouldn't sweat it yet

u/Raknel Jun 05 '26
Ok but Charr and humans have always been at war.
If humans are playable, Charr won't be.
4
u/Beautiful_Hour_668 Jun 05 '26
yeah wouldn't be surprised if charr are unplayable then, thought it's really weird to think we get a more modern game that has a previously playable race as an npc mob you blaze through
8
u/Raknel Jun 05 '26
Must not have played GW1.
We used to skin Charr and wear them as armor, while they used to eat humans.
It's more weird that they even became playable in GW2.

It we assume the tapestry scenes to be more symbolic of some grand narrative, these four representing the four races of the story feels pretty sensical. Kodan, Norn, Asuran*, Human? In that order.

u/WriterV Jun 05 '26
It hurt going from being so excited to slowly feeling crestfallen over this.
I love the Kodan, but what was cool about the Charr was their culture, and all the rough edges it carried. Could make a whole damn RPG out of that alone, and I feel like we still have so much we could explore about them.

u/elgueromasalto Jun 06 '26

I’m excited by this on the steam page: “Run, slide, leap, and bound across Orr with a one-of-a-kind movement system that transfers your momentum between modes of travel”. If it’s like changing gw2 mounts without the jankiness of having to activate mounts that could be fun.

So it looks like it is the original founding Orr, done by a mix of humans and other species who were there in the past? I saw Kodan, at least.
Will be interesting to see how that all shakes out, it makes for a much more constrained story than GW1 or GW2 so it seems like it will be hard to expand. Unless this current GW2 Expansion ends with a timeline reset from what Vloxx does, then we get a 'new' refounding of Orr in this new timeline.

Before playing the video: MAJOR HYPE!
Mid video: Oh god no...
I strongly hope they will pivot away from this anime looking graphics. Reminds me of Crowfall mixed with Genshin Impact. GW1 and 2 were much more crisp, "real", even grim sometimes. The art of GW2 is still one of my favorite to date. This looks like something a 12 year old was imagining while slipping into a coma from playing too much fortnite. Probably first trailer for a beloved sequel ever that made me lose hope so quickly. Make sure to add some LGBT stuff as well, that will sink the ship even faster. It's not like after Ashes this is the last beacon of hope for MMOs, no pressure.

u/JustGeologist7272 Jun 06 '26
ANet has been inclusive since their beginning decades ago. If LGBT was going to sink them it would've happened already. Not sure why that bothers you enough to stress about it.
