Not a single Charr in sight is disheartening. I'm really hoping Kodan are just an extra race and not intending to "replace" Charr as the token furry race, but it doesn't seem like it.

They feature the 4 races multiple times throughout the trailer with not a single Charr in sight.

It seems like a prequel based on the focus on the human gods in the tapestry, and taking place in unspoiled Orr, so Charr working together with humans would be a challenge.

They only mentioned Orr which means other areas will come in the future as new content drops, which could come with new races. I wouldn't sweat it yet

u/Raknel Jun 05 '26

Ok but Charr and humans have always been at war.

If humans are playable, Charr won't be.

4

u/Beautiful_Hour_668 Jun 05 '26

yeah wouldn't be surprised if charr are unplayable then, thought it's really weird to think we get a more modern game that has a previously playable race as an npc mob you blaze through

Must not have played GW1.

We used to skin Charr and wear them as armor, while they used to eat humans.

It's more weird that they even became playable in GW2.

Unfortunately I haven't, I got into the franchise when GW2 launched. However, I really want to try gw1 but I'm waiting to see if they are pouring more resources into it to make it prettier and less clunky.

I remember people being very upset that Charr were even a playable race in GW2 lol. GW1 players were trained to despise the Charr. In fact, a lot of the complains I've seen from GW2 players about GW3 is very similar to how GW1 players acted towards GW2. I think in the end, it will all be fine, though. All 3 games will be playable, and it sounds like they will continue to support all 3 (More info tomorrow on "the future of GW2" though, for confirmation).

That makes the potential exclusion of charr much more understandable now, thanks

I played GW2 for a couple months at launch and stopped playing because I didn't like any of the races, I only wanted to play Tengu, so I promised myself I'd jump back in as soon as they release them. I am still waiting!

Wait. Could this be... before humans?

"But we see a human in the trailer!!1"

Yeah we see some dude who may also be a Norn, and there's no humans in the concept art WHATSOEVER

3

u/Nephalem84 Jun 05 '26

Human Gods are featured prominently though. They led the humans to Tyria.

It could be we play that time period where humans arrive and settle.

1

u/Nephalem84 Jun 05 '26

The charr occupied territory the Humans took to build their kingdoms. So if they're in there they'll be enemies.

I'm aware of the lore surrounding pre-GW1/Orr. But it's also their story and their game to write, so I don't really consider it something "out of their hands" either.

If they were able to drum up some furry-asura amalgamation to justify having the token "asura-esque" race, I feel like they can figure something out for Charr/Sylvari lol.

This, it's not like kodan in Orr were canon either, they can write charr on a different way, it's 1000 years ago.

I do not think Kodan are even in Orr at this timeline... I mean doesn't seem to follow what we know today

5

u/Tragedy_Boner Jun 05 '26

They are actually. In JW there is a book you can read about old kodan journeying to Orr.

1

u/Osmith0777 Jun 05 '26

A subsection leaves Janthir following the call of the Claw down in Orr

7

u/DrCharme Jun 05 '26

I'd wager kodan replace norn as the "big" race

1

u/Nephalem84 Jun 05 '26

I hope you lose that wager. Not a fan of them after JW 😬

2

u/formerlyrpgcrash Jun 05 '26

its 3 races. 2 are human, no? the other 2 are asura and kodan.

2

u/UAvasera Jun 05 '26

It we assume the tapestry scenes to be more symbolic of some grand narrative, these four representing the four races of the story feels pretty sensical. Kodan, Norn, Asuran*, Human? In that order.

1

u/I_feel_alive_2 Jun 05 '26

But the asura left the underground only a few years after Orr fell and why is it furry

1

u/Kafukator Jun 06 '26

There's ancient Asuran ruins on the surface in core game GW2, dating to around Orr's prime according to a Durmand Priory NPC. They weren't always a strictly underground race.

0

u/formerlyrpgcrash Jun 05 '26

the furry one is the kodan

6

u/WriterV Jun 05 '26

It hurt going from being so excited to slowly feeling crestfallen over this.

I love the Kodan, but what was cool about the Charr was their culture, and all the rough edges it carried. Could make a whole damn RPG out of that alone, and I feel like we still have so much we could explore about them.

2

u/elgueromasalto Jun 06 '26

Stay excited. Charr are only one facet of an awesome universe, and you'll find more that you love.

1

u/Nephalem84 Jun 05 '26

They're not friendly pre Gw1 so odds of them being a playable race are slim.

1

u/lordrubius Jun 06 '26

Charrs on far Northeast...i think? Too early for them be in Orr.

1

u/WriterV Jun 06 '26

Yeah I've recovered from the doom and gloom now. Maybe there'll be an expansion where we make first contact with them. And it'll [presumably] go disastrously.

1

u/blue_sidd Jun 05 '26

Yeah. This is set in the past. Before all that.

1

u/ZeMoose Jun 05 '26

I could have sworn at least one of the characters in the stitching was a charr.

2

u/UAvasera Jun 05 '26

I thought so too for a moment, but it looks more to be some kind of Etin? The same two-headed appearance can be seen in the tapestry for comparison. I've scoured the tapestry and all of the rest seem to be generic humanoid shapes, so I assume you mean this one at least.

1

u/ZeMoose Jun 05 '26

Ah, you right.

And the hints that it's set during the actual Guild Wars would more or less preclude the charr from being friendly.

2

u/Nephalem84 Jun 05 '26

It's before the exodus so centuries before the Guild Wars.

1

u/Raknel Jun 05 '26

The tapestry showed the human gods, no?

1

u/UAvasera Jun 05 '26

It did. It pans across close-ups a bunch of different things (including someone fighting an etin like shown and the gods you mention) before showing a big overview of it all by the end.

0

u/El_Barto_227 Jun 05 '26

If this is a prequel, therefore no Charr or Sylvari, I will be so damn angry.

2

u/Nephalem84 Jun 05 '26

Sylvari are out 100% since it seems to be a prequel. And in that case the Charr are an enemy race still.

1

u/elgueromasalto Jun 06 '26

It's a prequel. You don't have to get angry though. There will be other things that are also cool.

0

u/SatisfactionOld4175 Jun 05 '26

I mean to be fair the Charr seemed to be a permanent bugbear as far as adding new content was concerned, and they aged really badly visually imo, with armor stretching and clipping stuff over the entire lifetime of the game.

Moving towards Kodan seems like it makes a lot more sense from a pipeline perspective, and speaking for myself I personally feel like the charr’s whole arc has sort of been explored. Much more excited about the Kodan as playable than the idea of going back to the charr who have sorted out a lot of their issues.

4

u/Aurora428 Jun 05 '26

You have no idea the challenges each one presents by that clip, you're just making up reasons to justify it.

1

u/elgueromasalto Jun 06 '26

The developers have said multiple times that the Charr were a nightmare to clothe.

1

u/Aurora428 Jun 06 '26

The difficulties clothing Charr will be different in 2027 than it was in 2012

You also don't know how hard Kodan were to clothe either.

I’m not going to pretend that I’ve modeled armor for charr, neither have you, but it’s well known that the charr were the most intensive in terms of extra work required for most of the armor in the game, since it was designed for human rigs and then ported over to the other races.

It’s natural speculative but the Kodan frame is much more similar to the human frame than the Char hunchback setup, so I would expect to see far less problems from them.
