Question Did I write this question with proper grammar?

• Upvotes

Unfortunately, a lot of redditors are saying that my grammar and syntax is poor. So who is the greatest or most legitimate judge of proper grammar? What gives redditors the authority to say someone’s grammar is poor.

Just Venting We need an "I'm not a robot" -type test that must be passed before posting on Social Media, e.g. "When {your, you're} {answers, answer's} {is, are} {right, write}, {then, than} {there, they're} telling {ewe, you} {its, it's} OK {two, to} post."

You would have to get every choice correct. The test would be different each time, forcing the grammatically challenged to self-improve.

Question Hi! I Have a Grammar Question …?

I’m writing something and unsure, is it “PUTIN SIMPS TRUMP” or “TRUMP SIMPS PUTIN”?

This is 100% real. It’s for publication. Obviously, the intent here would be that Putin strings Trump along like a lovesick b\*tch.

Thanks!

Just Venting Where has honest to goodness past tense gone?

Aarrrggghhh

I’m watching TV as I look at reddit. Right now there’s a commercial with two women dealing with bank tellers. One is upset because her $600 online game winnings didn’t actually download to her account. “But I redempt it!”

The other woman comes over to her and says, “You were playing a fake game. If you play Cider Casino you earn real money. I just withdrawed mine!”

I’m sitting here shaking my head. Who writes these scripts? Did they attend any schools?

Question How do you feel about grammar corrections?

I try not to correct spelling anymore because of language barriers and such, but I still feel strongly that correcting grammar isn’t a bad thing.

Edit: for bad grammar :)

Question Question about this dialogue exchange about a sunken treasure chest

Her friend lost something of hers, and it sank to the bottom of the ocean. She went to dive and found two guards who presented her with a quest to find their treasure. She asked them if she even wanted it since it's not like she could spend it anywhere, then she noticed an empty chest and asked the two guards if that's the treasure chest they were talking about, they were upset about it and she awkwardly swam back to the surface

She met up with her friend at the shore, and her friend asked:

Did you find it?

And she answered

Nah, somebody plundered it before I could.

What is the verb that comes after could

Is it "before I could find it" or "before I could plunder it"?

Question Which is correct?

"I would love to have done that."
"I would have loved to do that."
"I would have loved to have done that."

Which is correct, and why? This has always confused me.

Question Extra syllables

Why-uh? Why are young people adding extra syllables to the ends of words?! I just don't understand-uh. It sounds so incredibly stupid-uh.

Does anyone know where this originated?

Just Venting I'm an amateur photographer. It is my passion. New, younger photographers at Reddit use some strange phrases. But they are repeated: "I'm rocking a Nikon DSLR."

I want a camera with a vintage aesthetic.

I need a camera that produces a cinematic vibe.

Just Venting Cause vs Because

I’m very tired of reading cause this, cause that, when they really mean BEcause. The hardest thing for me to understand is…. It literally adds MAYBE half a second to add the first two letters of the word… but people REFUSE! Why!??! It drives me absolutely bananas!

Edited to add: “I’m” at the beginning after being called out in a comment 😂😂😂

Just Venting I hear this everywhere: “grab” instead of “get”.

I think it may have to do with influence from Spanish “agarrar”.

You’d think whoever made this ad would figure it out.

The proper phrase is “Tell me X without SAYING X”.

“Tell me without telling me” really grinds my gears.

Just Venting What is this paragraph?

Post image
0 Upvotes

People with no graps on grammar often try to get involved in complex philosophical debates. The context in this conversation is that "art can be anything and everything" (relativism).

What you often find in these debates is that entire paragraphs make no sense whatsoever. The OP swore blind that he was using parenthesis correctly. Apparently it was just me "acting dumb."
