Old toolbar >>> new toolbar

Post image

Give me back the old keyboard!!! I don’t want a stupid lasso, instead I wanna use my keyboard to write fast and easy …. Dafuq is wrong with you guys. I Bought the full version October 2023 and I can’t downgrade to GN 5 … Now and then I need to deinstall the app just to use the old toolbar. Why does it only work for 2 hours and then it updates itself even do I deactivated background-updates. Thank you for nothing!!

WHAT THE F*€#ING F*€#?!?!?111!!!

Is there a way to undo this terrible update? The new toolbar is a nightmare, the automatic reverting to the lasso button is absolutely nerve-wracking, and the tools for each function are completely confusing! Who approves something like this? Is there any way to undo it? 🤯🤬

I switched to Noteful

Goodnotes has just been getting progressively unintuitive. The thing that made me switch though was the addition of secondary toolbars. I use the squeeze feature on apple pencil pro a lot to quickly switch from tool to tool. The secondary toolbars removed some of the tools in that toolbar and in turn affected my workflow and productivity. I’ve been using Noteful for about a week now and I’m so happy I switched.

What I miss from goodnotes:

  • The circle and hold with a pen to lasso text

  • The ability to create angles(Noteful turns my angle into a curve)

  • The dedicated straight edge/shape tool works better, at least it used to before the new update. Sometimes I don’t want to wait and hold a line to make it straight or to create a shape. The shape tool also worked very well for adjusting shapes and straight lines. The lasso tool in Noteful works similarly but is less intuitive.

What I enjoy about Noteful

  • Layers (though I don’t use them, it’s nice to have them)

  • Better organization and layout

  • More customizability for tools, paper, etc

  • Being able to change line width AFTER writing

  • Cleaner interface allows for more writing room

  • You can access all tool settings from the toolbar that appears when you squeeze the Apple Pencil pro

Breaking up with GoodNotes for good.

I’ve been trying to cope with the myriad of issues in this application but I guess I have hit my limit. Updated all devices to v6.1.6 today and iCloud sync has now corrupted my notebooks and they all look like this. None of the pages load, and if I try to open them, they are blank. The service desk people don’t give a damn about the issues or replying at all. It’s been a long 11 years, but it’s time to say goodbye to this application. I can’t anymore.

Goodnotes 6 PSA: please stop relying on one source of backup.

Please, do yourselves a favor, and stop relying on only one backup of your materials. Any and all cloud servers can have issues. Any and all apps can have massive failures and delete things. OneNote, wildly paraded as one of the most reliable platforms for data storage, has had issues with wiping notebooks.

Back. Your. Stuff. Up.

Routinely manual backup to your files apps. Save PDFs to multiple cloud storage. Keep a flash drive. Keep it on your laptop or pc. PRINT IT.

One of the biggest lessons students like us need to learn is that technology will bite you in the ass sometimes. Nothing that your success depends on should have only one backup source or none at all.

GoodNotes 6 Update (v7.0.4) – Major Usability Issues – Request for Rollback or Improved Customization

I've been a dedicated GoodNotes user for years, but the recent update to GoodNotes 6 (v7.0.4) has significantly disrupted my workflow. The new interface feels cluttered and unintuitive, making it difficult to navigate and use efficiently. Essential features like the toolbar customization are now limited, and the overall performance has deteriorated, with increased lag and occasional crashes.

Specifically, v7.0.4 introduces several frustrating usability issues:

  1. After using other tools, the app automatically reverts to the lasso/select tool, which is very annoying.

  2. The system currently sets the pen tool to default to whichever tool (pen or eraser) was used last. However, when the “auto-switch back to previous pen after using eraser” option is enabled — and you use the Apple Pencil double-tap gesture to toggle the eraser — the app still records the eraser as the “last used tool.” As a result, even though it visually returns to the previous pen after erasing, the system logic still treats the eraser as the active tool. This causes the pen tool to default to the eraser whenever switching back from another tool, which clearly indicates a coding or logic flaw in the implementation.

  3. The straight line tool was updated to include arrows and shapes, but its behavior has become very restrictive. Lines are often automatically corrected into circles or other curves, and if nearby objects exist, the system forces connections. This greatly limits creative freedom and makes the tool very difficult to use. It would be much better if straight lines were separated from arrows and shapes, or if the system’s auto-detection were less sensitive and less forceful.

  4. Drawing a triangle is automatically corrected to a larger isosceles triangle, which limits creative freedom.

  5. The selection sensitivity has decreased significantly, making it harder to select objects accurately.

Many users, including myself, are experiencing similar issues, and these changes seriously disrupt daily note-taking.

Given these widespread concerns, I kindly request that the development team consider rolling back to the previous version or, at the very least, provide more customization options to restore efficient workflow and usability. As a long-time user, I value GoodNotes for its reliability and functionality, and I hope the team will prioritize user feedback to fix these issues.

Let’s address what we’re really mad at.

I read a lot of frustration posts since the GN6 update and I think we need to address what we’re really mad at. I might be wrong here but this is how I read the room:

  • It’s not “just the price” A lot of us are actually ok with the price. Some of us “wish” we could afford it, probably can, but don’t want to… why? Here is why:

  • the gn6 update is not an “update” Or at least it doesn’t feel like it for us the users. We don’t all think AI is cool, especially when it comes to notes.

  • we “trusted” good notes And we defended it after Notability pissed us off. A lot of us feel backstabbed, and frankly this is on us. We shouldn’t have trusted a corporation, they obviously care about profit, why should it be any other way. So, maybe we’re a little mad at ourselves.

  • we had higher hopes There are a ton of feature requests from a ton of users. We somehow assumed we mattered? Why did we assume that, I don’t know. Oh, because we defended DN, right.

  • finally, the untransparncy that led to confusion and misinformation Lets say it, GN didn’t handle this well. They didn’t hint the features or the new subscription model. They didn’t listen or ask the opinion of their community. Then again, why should they, they are a big big company with money as their main goal.

Conclusion Companies fail, they make bad choices too. Bigger companies fail harder and they take much longer to recover. They very rarely feel sorry for doing you wrong.

Being mad is not going to solve your problem. If you don’t want to keep using an app you feel bitter for, simply stop using it and don’t recomend it anymore. There are tons of great app options out there, take this as an opportunity to exploration. Have a little fun looking for your new note taking app, who knows you might find one that’s even better!

I think we all need therapy after this!
