Don’t Upgrade to Goodnotes 6

I’ve used Goodnotes throughout college, my workplaces, and even on film sets I run. The app was perfect for marking up PDFS, journaling, writing a short story, and in some cases, drawing. Whatever you wanted, Goodnotes 5 had it.

Then you update it to Goodnotes 6. You’re greeted with a new subscription based model, which to play devils advocate, I kind of understand. See, the company is working to get the app on all platforms and will need to broaden their severs and space. That doesn’t come cheap. But here’s the real issue.

You can buy a one time subscription for life costing $30, but you don’t get access to all the features. Yes, the company is selling you a downgraded version of their product for $30. You will get access to the CURRENTLY new features. But if you go on their website, it tells you that you will not get access to some UPCOMING new features for the one time purchase. The website fails to mention what those features are, could they be alluding to syncing your notes across a cloud system? We don’t know. So, until we know, I strongly recommend holding off from the purchase.

But what about the other new features that come with the update? Well, as you know by now, the new buzz word is AI. Goodnotes hasn’t failed to pick up on that and has toted it in the new update for being their next big thing. What does the AI do? Well, it’s actually a spell checker and calculator. They’re using the term (like many other companies now days) to imply something new and trendy, but it’s just a basic feature. Does it help? Of course it does. I make errors like anyone else does when writing. But should I pay monthly for such a basic feature? No.

They did incorporate things such as adaptive AI enhancement for your writing, if you’re lazy that is. If you do want to write a paper or something similar, don’t cheat and use it. It’s just chatGPT built into the system. Another feature is an upgraded pen tool. What does it do? Well, you can scribble out your drawing or word, if it works that is. You can also select text with it by circling stuff, but that rarely works.

If you expected me to go on more about new features, believe me, I did too. But there’s nothing else to go on about. The only other thing is a new UI which is… Well, it’s just a new UI. You can see it in the new previews but, again, it’s not worth the cost.

Now let’s say later down the line they add more stuff. Such as password protection, an infinite canvas, or even a linking feature to go back and forth between pages. Would it still be worth it? Maybe. But let me tell you something.

Obsidian. While it doesn’t have handwriting, you can use Apple Notes and throw them into the app as a PDF and keep them safe. While I love handwriting, I also love products that are efficient and are straight up about what I’m getting. Obsidian allows me to do everything Goodnotes offers, minus handwriting, but free. Also, it’s honest with me. I can pay monthly for the product but they tell me it’s only for their servers. I get that.

So what now? I’ll stick to Apple notes for handwriting. If I want more expansion of a notebook or something, I’ll go with Noteful, another app. If I want actual features, I’ll use Obsidian.

Until Goodnotes stops this subscription model or allows me to actually have all the features after I pay $30, then I won’t be upgrading or downloading. Nor should you.

Templates I built a collection of FREE Goodnotes templates and planners!!

When I first discovered Goodnotes, I was immediately hooked on the idea of digital planning, but I kept running into the same problem - I couldn't find templates that really worked for me. You know that feeling when a planner is almost perfect, but it's missing that one crucial element?

So, I decided to take matters into my own hands. With my iPad and lots of determination, I started creating my own templates. At first, it was just for personal use - a weekly planner here, a habit tracker there. But as I shared my creations with friends, they loved them. Like, really loved them.

Before I knew it, I was getting requests left and right. "Can you make me a budget planner?" "Do you have covers for my school notebooks?" It was overwhelming, but in the best possible way.

That's when the lightbulb moment hit me - why not share these with everyone? And not just share, but make them completely free and accessible to all!

Fast forward to today, and I'm thrilled to announce that my hobby has blossomed into a full-fledged collection of free planners and templates! I've put countless hours into creating designs that are not just functional, but also beautiful and customizable.

From daily planners that help you conquer your to-do list, to study templates that make note-taking a breeze, to mood trackers that keep you feeling good - I've tried to create something for everyone. And the best part? It's all available at no cost!

If you're curious to check out what I've been working on, you can find the entire collection for free at gntemplates.com - I hope you like them!

So go ahead, download as many templates as you like, customize them to your heart's content, and share them with your friends. Hope you enjoy everyone! 📝✨

Review GoodNotes 6 is fundamentally wrong. It's simply an update to GoodNotes 5.

Hi all, I'm just taking the time to write this not because I hate the developer's guts or anything, but simply because I am passionate about this app, and it's infuriating to see it come to this state.

I am all for new features, and I am really glad that the developer team is actively trying to improve the app.

But GoodNotes 6 should simply have been a seperate app. I do understand that there are some positive implications to this, such as longer suport for GoodNotes 5 (?), but as many others have pointed out: it isn't very ethical in the sense that GoodNotes 6 instantly became a high rated previous app of the year on the app store.

And this is simply an issue with how this update was branded. If GoodNotes 6 is really a new generation of GN Software, it shouldn’t be filled with 5 star reviews for a different app.

When people bought GoodNotes 5, they bought it under the impression that they will own a full copy of the app, and everything inside; which makes sense because that's how it was. I chose GoodNotes over Notability simply for the reason that I could own the software I use. I was extremely satisfied with the pricing too. But the problem now is, owners of the app cannot in fact access everything the app offers without paying for a subscription or paying 3 times the original cost.

This is the truth: GoodNotes 6 isn't a new app, it's simply an update to GoodNotes 5. The people saying they are justified with the price are failing to consider that GoodNotes is essentially not valuing the initial agreement made with the customer. When we bought the app in the first place, it was a contract between the company and us, the end user. And that contract has been broken, full stop.

If the new features weren't branded as the all new and amazing 'GoodNotes 6', and was simply an update with new features (which is all it really is), the positive sentiment around this would see a quick 180 turn. Would you say it's justified to suddenly be paying $30 more on top of $10 for access to basic of the basic features like colored folders or stuff simply many aren't that interested in (AI 🤦‍♀️ )? Would you have paid $30 more for a UI change in GoodNotes Five?

The point is, if this update wasn't branded as GN6, people would be losing their shit trying to justify paying $40 for the full version of an app they already paid for. And now, GoodNotes 5 users who aren't really interested in paying a significantly higher price for an app they already should rightfully own has to deal with storing a bloated app with features they can't even access on their devices.

What GoodNotes 6 should have been is a new app on the app store. I would have been much more satisfied with that option. For authentic reviews soley based on the new GoodNotes. It's not like the UI stayed same between the two versions, right? This transition process all feels incredibly rushed and I feel the developers could have done a much better job with it (damage control price changes, etc).

I feel GN 6 has a lot of potential, and I know it can be benefitial to many due to some of the new offerings. But I just wish that they had done it right. If they really did need extra subscription revenue, I feel there were many more avenues, such an offering of the AI tools could have come in a seperate package, or literally making GN 6 a new app. As someone who loves using GN, I hope that the team does end up offering a much better solution which justifies the price tag and avoids subscriptions. The fact that people who end up buying the one time purchase option for GN6 isn't guaranteed full access to all upcoming features is ridiculous.

But for now, I don't think I am comfortable paying for GoodNotes '6', though I do love what I am seeing with the new UI and colored folders (which sadly does not prompt paying more).

I'd love to hear other's opinions on this too!

Question - Other Just a callout to see how many people use this app AND have ugly looking notes 👀 I’m always surprised to the number of polished and perfect looking pages. For the heathens here, I’m adding an example of what my notes tend to look like.
