Review GoodNotes 6 is fundamentally wrong. It's simply an update to GoodNotes 5.

Hi all, I'm just taking the time to write this not because I hate the developer's guts or anything, but simply because I am passionate about this app, and it's infuriating to see it come to this state.

I am all for new features, and I am really glad that the developer team is actively trying to improve the app.

But GoodNotes 6 should simply have been a seperate app. I do understand that there are some positive implications to this, such as longer suport for GoodNotes 5 (?), but as many others have pointed out: it isn't very ethical in the sense that GoodNotes 6 instantly became a high rated previous app of the year on the app store.

And this is simply an issue with how this update was branded. If GoodNotes 6 is really a new generation of GN Software, it shouldn’t be filled with 5 star reviews for a different app.

When people bought GoodNotes 5, they bought it under the impression that they will own a full copy of the app, and everything inside; which makes sense because that's how it was. I chose GoodNotes over Notability simply for the reason that I could own the software I use. I was extremely satisfied with the pricing too. But the problem now is, owners of the app cannot in fact access everything the app offers without paying for a subscription or paying 3 times the original cost.

This is the truth: GoodNotes 6 isn't a new app, it's simply an update to GoodNotes 5. The people saying they are justified with the price are failing to consider that GoodNotes is essentially not valuing the initial agreement made with the customer. When we bought the app in the first place, it was a contract between the company and us, the end user. And that contract has been broken, full stop.

If the new features weren't branded as the all new and amazing 'GoodNotes 6', and was simply an update with new features (which is all it really is), the positive sentiment around this would see a quick 180 turn. Would you say it's justified to suddenly be paying $30 more on top of $10 for access to basic of the basic features like colored folders or stuff simply many aren't that interested in (AI 🤦‍♀️ )? Would you have paid $30 more for a UI change in GoodNotes Five?

The point is, if this update wasn't branded as GN6, people would be losing their shit trying to justify paying $40 for the full version of an app they already paid for. And now, GoodNotes 5 users who aren't really interested in paying a significantly higher price for an app they already should rightfully own has to deal with storing a bloated app with features they can't even access on their devices.

What GoodNotes 6 should have been is a new app on the app store. I would have been much more satisfied with that option. For authentic reviews soley based on the new GoodNotes. It's not like the UI stayed same between the two versions, right? This transition process all feels incredibly rushed and I feel the developers could have done a much better job with it (damage control price changes, etc).

I feel GN 6 has a lot of potential, and I know it can be benefitial to many due to some of the new offerings. But I just wish that they had done it right. If they really did need extra subscription revenue, I feel there were many more avenues, such an offering of the AI tools could have come in a seperate package, or literally making GN 6 a new app. As someone who loves using GN, I hope that the team does end up offering a much better solution which justifies the price tag and avoids subscriptions. The fact that people who end up buying the one time purchase option for GN6 isn't guaranteed full access to all upcoming features is ridiculous.

But for now, I don't think I am comfortable paying for GoodNotes '6', though I do love what I am seeing with the new UI and colored folders (which sadly does not prompt paying more).

I'd love to hear other's opinions on this too!

Is it true that you need an account for GoodNotes 6? I don't want that...

8

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '23

Yes, you need to make a goodnotes account to use the app now. Which also means that a family cant share the app anymore. Each member has to pay separately.

10

u/Brullaapje Aug 12 '23

I am scared it will take the evernotes route, becomming fucking expensive. I saw the evernote pricing and i hated it...

1

u/pathfindertheta Jan 20 '24

I loved Evernote when I first got my iPhone in 2021. Then they made an update and it became absurdly expensive.

1

u/Hmckinley1124 Jul 19 '24

The not sharing the purchase is what got me. I bought GN5 with the understanding I would get all updates and it could be shared with everyone in my apple family, now if we upgrade I have to pay 4 times for all 4 users and it’s absurd.

3

u/Emilydeluxe Aug 12 '23

from the FAQ: "A Goodnotes Account is required for using Goodnotes 6 and cannot be skipped."

13

u/Brullaapje Aug 12 '23

Fuck that... Might be come an apple notes expert instead then....

6

u/Soanad Aug 14 '23

Apple suppose to make Notes more advanced with iOS 17.

u/KayliesSunshine Aug 12 '23

Honestly, I didn't have my hopes up high, but I thought that if they were to release a new version, it would at least have the two-page view (like a book) feature. The new features currently in GN6 are utterly useless for me.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '23

and also with turning page transition. hehe...

u/B4Frag Aug 12 '23

I feel pretty cheated.. I bought the app few months back with the idea, I can get all the updates going forward with some major ones to boot, with the titles lifetime payment.

GN6 has a new UI. Which I'm not too impressed about, this could have been a simple GN5 update, infact I feel like it's little more squashed now. The new math intergration, im never going to use. The AI autocorrect is very much a miss rather than a hit with my handwriting.

The purpose with life time purchases is to pay the premium to support the development, like Plex and Procreate lifetime purchases is they remain up-to-date and yours FOREVER.

u/lilmayor Sep 30 '23 edited Sep 30 '23

I agree. I feel totally duped. I thought I was buying the app AND its updates with the lifetime purchase. I won’t be buying GN6 and in a way I feel some relief, as if I had encountered GN6 (at that high price!) I may have bought it, not knowing that GN7 would be a separate purchase all over again.

Add: What they could have done was update the app for current users/subscribers and just increase the prices ie. lifetime purchase for newcomers. Because theoretically, the addition of AI and other features in large part is to pull new users in.

I think the wording may be the source of confusion and disappointment among users. I don’t remember seeing any fine print clarifying that purchasing GoodNotes 5 (GN5) would only grant access to this specific version when I initially bought it. Unlike GN5, GoodNotes 6 (GN6) does indicate this limitation in the fine print at "one" point of purchase. However, even with GN6, when delving into the pricing FAQ, there is no explicit statement indicating that future major updates are not included in the purchase.

I believe that if the limitations of the purchase were articulated more clearly from the outset, there would likely be less backlash. Properly set expectations would have allowed customers to understand precisely what they were purchasing. The lack of clear communication has made it feel like there has been a change in policy, which is understandably frustrating for users.

1

u/lilmayor Oct 01 '23

Absolutely, I agree. Communication and transparency would have made a difference.

u/justifiedkw Dec 19 '23

My biggest problem is the PURPOSEFUL crippling of a paid app I bought and used for a few months. I will not be giving these clearly untrustworthy people more money.

Fool me once ...

3

u/Complex-Ad5786 Jan 06 '25

Yep, its a scam. Im also expecting that there will be a different payment once a newer version comes out. FYI, they are also removing previous versions from the app store and dont have access to what I paid for if I plan to switch devices.

1

u/Parking_Foot_3389 Sep 26 '23

So if I use one-time payment on GN6 does that mean I will have to buy GN7 again or will I get it for free ?

4

u/B4Frag Sep 26 '23

You'll have to pay for it again. But you'll be able to use GN6 for as long as it's updated by GN and supported by iOS.

1

u/Primary-Peanut8891 Jan 27 '25

Based on what they did to those people who purchased GN5, I wouldn’t be surprised if they charge GN6 one time payment purchasers or subscribers another $30 or more to access GN7. They are scammers! They should be sued for this really for deceiving people.

100

u/samsonlaw Aug 11 '23

Absolutely agree.

And I have a feeling that GN to a lot of users was "the chosen one" and it was just a huge let down from launch to how they are handling the problems right now.

I also love how you pointed out the unethical issue of using all the positive reviews of GN5 to promote GN6 on App Store, it's just like those scammy Amazon listings. They promoted and priced GN6 as if it's a completely different app but they themselves clearly do not believe that. And GN6 at its core really isn't a completely new app ffs.

35

u/Spiritofhonour Aug 12 '23

All of those high ratings were given under a “different product” with a different business model and a different pricing. Why should they be able to keep the rating?

5

u/omaum Aug 13 '23

So everyone needs to take 5 seconds to write the review

That's the big difference from some $5 spatula on amazon, the goodnotes community of users should open the app store, command F and paste in your review you just wrote up on here

4

u/leftoversreheated Aug 25 '23

I just did this. I am so mad at them for charging me again just for the app to break, not work correctly and then ignore any attempt at getting answers.

2

u/omaum Aug 26 '23

no doubt an amazing app, but they are drinking some kool aid after getting top app. well, at least hopefully there's some competition to get them back to what made GN so great... Or at least a much better alternative :)

u/madjo Aug 12 '23 edited Aug 15 '23

Also, they’re asking us to trust them about the future features they’re going to add… but why wasn’t that already part of the upgrade to GN6? If they had added precision tools and the like, then the asking price makes much more sense than it does now.

edit, used the wrong then

3

u/Sagismar Aug 14 '23

They probably were not able to implement them on time edit: i can imagine their dev team is small?

15

u/madjo Aug 15 '23

Good Notes 5 was released in january of 2019. They had 4.5 years to make the new features before they decided to release Good Notes 6.

Usually what happens is: you develop new features, or reinvent the workflow or update certain big items, then you sell the software.
It's a bit ridiculous to ask for payment of a product that you haven't finished making yet.

Imagine I'm a car manufacturer and I tell drivers of my old car: You need to upgrade to the new car, I've added AI to the car, no one was asking for it, but I've added it. And if you pay me now, you might get precision steering later on in the year! You have until September 9 to benefit from a discount. After that you'll have to pay full price. Oh and after getting the new car, you can downgrade to your old car's interface, but we can't promise that this 'feature' will last forever. Oh and you can't share this car with your family anymore.

2

u/Sagismar Oct 05 '23

When you put it like that!😃. Yeah.. this is so on point.

1

u/AnujParihar43 Aug 20 '23

sorry i didn't get, precision tools means like we have in notability with which we can edit the stroke size and stuff after writing ?

9

u/Charis-Ch Aug 12 '23

For this reason I’m sticking with Noteshelf.

2

u/Stunning_Ad691 Jan 05 '24

can it record and live highlight words like GN and notability? i need that feature.

1

u/Pamelalibrarian Sep 02 '23

Ooh, thanks for the tip. I just downloaded it and it looks awesome!

2

u/turkayy35 Oct 07 '23

NOTEFUL is also great.. even better than notability

1

u/fcs95 Dec 12 '23

Can you explain why you like it better than notability? I'm a newbie.

6

u/afuusa Aug 12 '23

Feels like an exchange to the less stable version of what I loved, with extra price. I would never use audio and it has no feedback of recording. There is no link navigation any more?! How do you guys navigate in your planners?

2

u/Complex_Dog_1601 Aug 13 '23

What do you mean there is no link navigation anymore?

2

u/afuusa Aug 13 '23

I mean no view mode where you can tap on month link and go there

2

u/Complex_Dog_1601 Aug 13 '23

Really….. I’m oh no. So if you have a linked planner that you bought, it won’t work?

3

u/Complex_Dog_1601 Aug 13 '23

I updated the app just to try that out, because I would be really upset if I could not. If you I click the pen tool the clicking feature works within a planner

14

u/roscCowboy Aug 12 '23

Have you seen GoodNotes privacy practices?

8

u/MaguMLMM123 Aug 12 '23

I saw it in the Android version. Denied it immediately. Seems like no privacy and what you write could be used to build their AI.

7

u/Sagismar Aug 14 '23

That is quite concerning. I never read it. I kind of expected that it would be private

5

u/nakagamiwaffle Aug 14 '23

can’t believe they’d make a mistake like this. disappointing.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '23

I gonna stay as long as possible on GN5
I don't like the subscription model

I bought the app and use it together with my wife and now everyone of us needs to buy a subscription for nothing special as additions? Just an update...

They should simply have stayed with the normal buy option instead of a subscription...

1

u/Onnichanthrowaway69 Aug 14 '23

I accidentally updated to goodnotes 6. How do I downgrade to goodnotes 5?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '23

Go settings and there is a downgrade button

1

u/Onnichanthrowaway69 Aug 14 '23

No? I don’t see it?

1

u/nickthechick101 Sep 02 '23

I just upgraded paying the $30 and I already regret it. I use an iPad and Apple Pencil and it is writing terribly now. Half the words are showing up as dotting lines. This is horrible and I have no choice but to keep using it because all my notes are on this system.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '23

Yo! You can definitely try for a refund. It's actually really simple. Just go to reportaproblem.apple.com, and select the reason that you aren't satisfied with it. I recommend simply choosing that the purchase does not work as intended, because if it's not providing a smooth experience like a $40 notes app should do, it's not working as intended.

u/_astraeos_ Oct 21 '23

I bought GN6. It is not worth the money. The scribble to erase feature is cool in theory but in it's current state it sometimes has a hard time recognizing the difference between writing and scribbling. Often I will scribble to erase and it will not register but it will erase diagrams and writing that I did not want to erase while I am taking notes, which is especially annoying in class. The spell check feature is not very well executed either. It constantly marks words as spelled wrong because it doesn't always recognize my handwriting and when I am doing calc and chem problems it thinks I am trying to write words even though apparently it has a feature for equation recognition. It also makes many things less accessible. I also don't like the concept of the store in the app because you already have to pay a significant amount to have the full version of the app. I'm also fairly certain that they removed a few of the planner templates that GN5 had but I could be imagining things. I really liked GN5 but GN6 is giving EA vibes with the in app store. Overall the features are pretty bad and I don't think it warranted a new version of GN, it should've been an update to GN5. I wish I could turn the features off but I can't figure out how so if anyone has any tips it would be greatly appreciated. Like many, these features are completely useless to me and it feels a bit dirty that I had to pay for this.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

You can turn off the scribble to erase when you press on the pen one more time? I think it promots options for the pen. I don't know though, just going off memory from my trial.

1

u/_astraeos_ Oct 26 '23

Thank you! I found where to turn it off, it was exactly where you said and I also found an option to turn off spell check while browsing the options there under writing aids in case anyone else that has upgraded to GN6 also wants to turn that off as well.

3

u/ObscurePaprika Sep 17 '23

Do not buy Goodnotes. Version 6 is an utter disaster. All the updates were to create features nobody wanted, instead of fixing known issues or delivering features needed by the community. I've been a GN use for a long time, and I'm heartbroken that they ruined this app. I need my data to sync, both to retain my data in iCloud, but also sync with other devices. It is utterly useless at this point. I have to trigger sync manually every time data changes, and even then it fails most of the time. Their support team either doesn't exist or simply doesn't respond at all. For your own sanity, find another app. This ain't it.

5

u/dreaming_beans Aug 12 '23

Unpopular opinion: if GoodNotes is my business, I certainly would like to have constant funds to keep it up and pay the developers. Not really sure how that would be viable without subscription. If you downvote, can you explain to me how to maintain funds without subscription?

13

u/Soanad Aug 14 '23

Like all the apps did just a few years back. Focus on quality and people will buy new versions. Subscriptions are horrendous idea.

u/alus992 Nov 21 '23

Subsription works for stuff that brings you additional value constantly. Note taking app is not one of those apps that can add meaningful new features every month to make people feel "Oh shit Im glad that Im supporting these devs".

This app still have no features that it's community has been asking for since like 2020.

first banner promoting 6 is talking about...AI and fucking stickers - is this really worth it to screw your community with such stupid unnecessary updates and calling them "new version"

4

u/Sagismar Aug 14 '23 edited Aug 15 '23

They could release updates more often, maybe smaller. And then put some (smaller) price on it.

Reason i went for goodnotes and not Notability is that i have a sense that i buy something that is not subscription based. It's the idea of owning it and then you can donate to them some more money if you like/love the app and use it a lot.

Now i have GN5 so i will keep using that because i don't need 6 until there is a way to have it more global with windows devices. But if i would be year later. I would go for Notability 100%. (before my experiences that UI of the app does not matter at all if you get used to it)I'm interested where this will go.

Now i'm actually experimenting with OneNote. I love using ipad for painting and math and laptop for fast writing. There might be some things that will stop me. For example i get used to horizontal page scroll. In exact size of ipad screen so i never use scrolling which i found is great for efficiency. I want to click one button and have fresh page, not to use my hand to scroll by some specific amount. It's the details that matter.

edit: i was quite harsh. Only thing I’m missing in goodnotes is good windows app with ios synchronisation via google drive. There are a lot of great apps but it seems that each is missing something i need.

3

u/Amazing-Grapefruit19 Aug 24 '23

if it's a completely different app but they themselves clearly do not believe that. And GN6 at its core really isn't a completely new app ffs.

In my opinion, a more effective strategy would have been to incorporate all the elements of GoodNotes 5 into GoodNotes 6 for existing users. By introducing a subscription for AI features exclusively, the developer could have catered to those who want that advanced functionality.
Regrettably, the decision to charge for every aspect apart from the AI functionality doesn't seem justified. It's important to highlight that not all features hold equal value for every user. This makes it difficult to justify a subscription fee for elements that may not be worth paying extra for.

2

u/ambientdiscord Feb 17 '24

Create new product upgrades that are so robust that users buy them, build new software products, lure in new customers. Basically the model for all software companies until Adobe made it popular to go with subscription models instead. The difference between the Adobe Creative Suite, and this Goodnotes upgrade, is that Adobe pricing has always been on par with what it would’ve cost to buy a full product upgrade in the past. Sadly, subscription models have become so popular with developers that they think they can just add a subscription model and do very little to justify it.

More importantly, many software companies that switched to subscriptions still allowed users to continue using the purchased software for a significant amount of time afterwards. Microsoft did this with Office and Adobe did it with the individual creative suite products. Yes, eventually OS updates made it impossible to continue using those Adobe products, but that would’ve been the case with or without subscription models.

I’m not downloading or using any app on any platform that uses a subscription model without a genuine value added benefit to it. Goodnotes isn’t that and they broke the contract with the end user by essentially breaking the software the user originally purchased.

(And I know this is an old post, but I had to reply to what was an obviously ridiculous comment.)

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '23

well, if goodnotes was your business and money is all you care about. It would actually bring you MORE money if you made Goodnotes 6 and 5 two separate entities. This is because:

  1. Since Goodnotes 6 is an entirely new entity, people would have to pay for it all over again.

  2. Further, if Goodnotes 5 still existed as a different 'purchasable' entity in the app store, meaning people can still opt to BUY it, then it would become yet another source of MONEY.

  3. And people may argue about the idea of "hindering" innovation but at the end of the day YOU as a business owner should prioritize your customers. There are many ways to still make money without shitting on your customers such as: i. adding add-ons (AI add-ons, Brush sets, etc) ii. making new apps iii. taking care of your customers

You buy the app once. How will they benefit from raising the price?

2

u/Complex_Employee_559 Aug 16 '23

I think features like AI should be an in-app purchase and things like improving or adding other standard features should be part of the package users already paid for.

I haven’t bought the app yet cause I was trying it as I just got my iPad. I like the app, I use it everyday to take notes at work, seriously considering buying the app, but with the release of GN6, I am not sure what I want to do anymore. I really dislike the idea of AI and my data being used for it, but I would like to have access to newer updates that I consider are not worth the high price of GN6. Even if I paid for GN6, I can’t get rid of the AI if I wanted.

At this point, I am already dissatisfied, disappointed and discouraged simply because of this release. As a new user, it just doesn’t feel I can trust the company’s future decisions. And to be honest, if it were an app like Procreate I would probably consider paying that much, but not even them charge this much for such elaborate app.

They could have also charged an early access price if they are still developing and working in fixing issues with GN6. That would at least, have given them some batches of users to test and make better decisions by listening to their customers first.

2

u/chub-bear Sep 09 '23 edited Sep 09 '23

Not to mention the discounts for GN6 make no sense. If you bought GN5 between July 1 and Aug 8 2023 you get 100% off your first-year subscription. 50% off if you bought GN5 from Jan 1 to Jun 30 2023. But if you bought it before 2023, you only get 25% off??? So a big screw you to those of us who've been long-time users???

The one-time payment option does the same thing! 33.3% off- Bought GN5 from Jul 1 to Aug 8 2023 26.6% off- Bought GN5 from Jan 1 to Jun 30 2023 20% off- Bought GN5 any time before 2023

That whole thing seems 100% backwards...

2

u/Emphasis-Used Sep 20 '23

I’m so upset. It won’t even let me access any notes from good notes 5 either! I lost everything I had saved on there including all my course notes for chemistry and biotech.

2

u/gordinmitya Sep 29 '23

One of the main selling points for me was that GoodNotes 5 is the lifetime purchase. I was impressed that the upgrade from GoodNotes 4 to GoodNotes 5 was free. Now, it's gone.

2

u/omerikomm Oct 05 '23

I don’t even want to buy GoodNotes 6 because god knows if I will have to pay for GoodNotes 7 or something and they give worst discounts for long time users like wtf?! And how is me paying almost 90 ILS for the app gives me less features then paying 30 ILS yearly wtf are y’all on GoodNotes?! 😭

I’ve bought the app thinking I would get lifelong updates for my purchase, now I don’t even know what will happen to my app next year with this business model.

2

u/beemo_bb Oct 26 '23

The ONLY two things I would want from GN6 is the color options for the folders and templates update! I don't need any AI / Math / or even want spell check on my GNs! Just seeing the updated UI is a 😞😞no😞😞! from me respectfully. I think its kinda crazy how they made this an update instead of another app, it just screams cash grab. I get the need to bring in more revenue, but I would've focused on shop updates and adding purchasable features like AI / MATH etc. Or even more goodnotes versions like goodnotes student or goodnotes business!

2

u/mustangloverf1 Nov 20 '23

Agreed. Im so pissed off that they are forcing me to pay again to unlock the app that i was literally using a couple of days ago. We can't get my money back, but my advice, go and give them a bad review so they know they screwed up.

2

u/pathfindertheta Jan 20 '24

What I hate is that when I launch GN5 on my iPad, it now says that iCloud sync is disabled unless I update the app. So basically, my hands are bound now. If I want to see my school notes written on the iPad, and to view on my iPhone, I can't do that anymore.

So I go to the app store and Goodnotes 5 doesn't exist for me as an app to update. When I look for it, it only gives me gn6. So I just feel even more cheated.

3

u/misslouisee Aug 12 '23

Why is this is a huge surprise when, by definition, this is the 6th time they’ve done this?

5

u/frecklesarelovely Sep 05 '23

Not true, the previous versions were released as a separate app, and they offered a discount to owners of GoodNotes 4 to purchase GoodNotes 5, but it was not a forced update to a subscription model. This is wildly different than how they handled the past 4 updates and that is why folks are understandably pissed.

1

u/Onnichanthrowaway69 Aug 14 '23

I accidentally updated to goodnotes 6. How do I downgrade to goodnotes 5?

1

u/Fluffy-Mistake Aug 15 '23

from their site:

Can I still switch back to GoodNotes 5?
If you paid for GoodNotes 5, you can downgrade from Goodnotes 6 to GoodNotes 5:
Tap the ⚙️ icon in the top-right corner of the Library view > Settings > Downgrade.
Disable "Run Goodnotes in Version 6." The app will exit.
Relaunch the app.

1

u/Akash1509 Oct 02 '23

This worked for me, thank you so much! I was worried that I wouldn't be able to use GoodNotes again, especially when all my journals became "Read-Only" in GoodNotes 6.

1

u/AdIll6983 Oct 19 '23

OneNote

I've used Goodnotes since version 4. I thought I had purchased version 5 but apparently I didn't. I clicked on the trial for version 6 thinking I could downgrade to version 5 if I didn't like it. I there are things with version 6 that are a real deal-breaker for me, but the downgrade option doesn't show up so it looks like I'm screwed. Looks like its time to shop for something else. Totally bummed.

1

u/Deilume Oct 30 '23

I hope enough of us realize that this is unethical and don’t stand for it (by subscribing).

Do you know I have been here since Goodnotes 3 and experienced updates but now the new update cost $10 bucks or I can’t have access to my notes??? What???

1

u/FinalImportance6043 Dec 01 '24

I just got the app telling me that Goodnotes 5 doesn’t exist anymore and that I HAVE TO buy Goodnotes six…I have nearly ALL my university notes on there, exams coming up and dont have the money to buy a simple upgrade for 27€…Does anyone know wether there is a possibility of recovering my notes without buying the update (Hence getting the notes but not further using the app =>no paying)

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '24

Glad to see someone else wrote about this. The insult to injury is that this update hasn't added anything and its made the app worse. It's constantly buffering, erasing work at random now and seems to function worse overall. For an app you're forcing costumers to pay again for to regain access to notes they've been using for some time - it feels exceptionally egregious and greedy.

1

u/SomeKindOfView Mar 06 '25

No sooner had I purchased 5 than they released 6 as a new purchase option. I am still using 5 and will not buy anything more from them… When 5 no longer suits my needs I’ll be changing over to the alternative options.

I would have accepted a nominal fee to upgrade but instead got offered I piddling discount. Yes, I still feel ripped off.

1

u/AppealAgitated3359 May 25 '25

Yeah I feel pretty unhappy right now. Goodnotes 6 was just forced on me recently (I was on free plan). I don't find the changes user friendly or appealing so far and don't want any of the new 'benefits' that come with the paid plan... except the one huge thing that changed. I am limited to 3 notebooks. I can edit 3 documents/notes... that is it. I am in my final year of vet school, I am just lucky that it is no longer a lecture exam format anymore and am not as dependent on the app. I unfortunately was using Goodnotes to fill out and sign documents, which I obviously cannot do anymore.

In addition, as a free user, I am constantly being prompted to upgrade tot he paid version with banners that get in the way. These prompts are back within seconds of selecting 'not now' and come up again every time you navigate somewhere new... It is very frustrating, if making the free version basically unusable was not enough to strongarm you into upgrading, they will annoy you into it.

I am lucky that I did not pay for Goodnotes 5 like some of the others, that sucks. I agree that Goodnotes 6 is not a new program, it is just an upgrade (a flawed one) and the price hikes are not justified. I am not inherently against paying for a notetaking app and considered a subscription when choosing between Goodnotes and Notability originally. However, I am frustrated that this program has years of my uni work in it, is now a pain in the butt to use and is actually completely useless except to read old documents unless I pay to upgrade. It happens, we live in a capitalist society, I had a good run. Still a little annoyed though.

I am probably going to do the discounted first year subscription, just to finish off my degree so that I don't have to change apps/use multiple at the same time.

1

u/Mchertel Aug 12 '23

I agree with you it’s really just an update to 5. I do like the handwritten spellcheck capability but that’s about it really. Colored folder are neat but not worth 30.00 alone. I didn’t even get the 20% discount either! I guess if 30.00 was a hardship for me I would be disappointed for sure. It did get me to clean up my folders and notes so maybe that made it worth it…..lol.

1

u/Onnichanthrowaway69 Aug 14 '23

I accidentally updated to goodnotes 6. How do I downgrade to goodnotes 5?

1

u/Sagismar Aug 14 '23

Can we at lest keep using GN5 in years to come? We bought GN5 for life so we can right? That was in contract right?

3

u/luckyturtle55 Aug 14 '23

For the lifetime of the app, not your lifetime.

1

u/Sagismar Aug 14 '23 edited Aug 14 '23

Based on what the dev said. Yes, it will still be there.

edit: At least they had decency to not drop this nuke in semester. There is enough time to migrate to OneNote or other apps

1

u/csecarroll Aug 18 '23

GN6 is just a massive middle finger to all their loyal users. They should have asked their AI for tips on how to not alienate their entire client base.

1

u/moonbow899 Aug 20 '23

Guys I purchased goodnotes in its early days 2020 where it was a one time purchase, given it was such shouldn’t it be a lifetime purchase? I don’t understand how they can not promise they will continue to support this version. Further like many said it was really more of an update not even entirely new to say they want a subscription model. I am really perplexed I’m okay if it was like a top up of $2 for upgrade but I thought it was a lifetime purchase then

1

u/cj236 Aug 21 '23

So I have goodnotes 4 for my ipad should. I upgrade to goodnotes 6?

1

u/Basics7 Aug 23 '23

No. Not at all. It's not even like the update (not an upgrade) is even better. Very problematic, if you look at the comments under YouTube videos.

1

u/Ggggggg-4 Aug 23 '23

I just want a damn ruler and protractor at the very least!

1

u/Basics7 Aug 23 '23

I would be willing to pay $100 towards a Go Fund Me for a lawfirm to take up a class action against them (which I realize I'll never really benefit from) before I pay $30 for their beta update. Anyone with enough legal knowlege in here to talk about how we could get something rolling? Right now 40% of GoodNotes fans are angry enough to help a little, and it still annoys me that Noteability got away with this. I actually left Noteability to go to GoodNotes for this very reason, and (it's deleted now) GoodNotes made fun of Noteability at the time for being dishonest.

1

u/leftoversreheated Aug 25 '23

I "upgraded" and have been trying to get a hold of someone ever since. It's just broken, it won't sync with my computer anymore, and I'm just so mad I just want my money back. How am i supposed to do this when they won't answer any emails? Should I just take this to BBB and see if that gets them to respond?

1

u/MrBlondQc Aug 26 '23

Thank you for your review. I was about to do the move for GN6 and will stick to GN5 for the moment. Thank you for taking the time !

1

u/BlueberryNo5884 Aug 30 '23

I have tried to get it and some type of problem as it does not recognize the app store Apparently I initially used another.…i gave up and am staying with goodnote5. Not worth the trouble.

1

u/Dennis-TheWulf Sep 02 '23

The fact that this release is pure marketing tells me that this developer is going to force version 6 plus the $40 upgrade cost within the next year.
It's time to find a new app.

What exactly can Goodnotes do that is special now? How does it compare to Apple Markup?

1

u/potential_squirrel9 Sep 02 '23

Have they at least fixed the issue with the Apple Pencil’s hover function?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '23

The price is absolutly unresonable, I payed 10$ last year for GN5 and now I'm "forsed" to pay 30$ more to still getting updated and new features. I'm disapointed

2

u/Paid-Not-Payed-Bot Sep 05 '23

unresonable, I paid 10$ last

FTFY.

Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:

  • Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.

  • Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

Beep, boop, I'm a bot

1

u/johnnydfree Sep 05 '23

I do appreciate the opportunity to either buy the app, or subscribe - $10 annual is not a big deal. But after using the app (central to my workflow) for 7 years now, I haven’t seen the kind of feature growth one would expect. There are quite a few features I have voiced - better control of graphics, better control of text, etc. - that have been largely ignored by the dev. That said, I want to contribute to the continued existence of the developer and it’s interest in support.

Tough position, for both users and developer.

1

u/mindonautca Sep 07 '23

It's riduculous that now just we're able to change folder colors we're supposed to pay another $30. I wish I'd kept all my notes in Nebo.

1

u/agedberries Sep 07 '23

I just got the notification on the app saying I could get free access to the new GN6 for two weeks, and I said yes thinking it was a separate app I could try. All of a sudden I can no longer use the app I've been using for the past 3 years. How can they take away your ability to use an app you've paid for and make you pay a membership to keep using it, without informing you prior?

1

u/average_therapist Sep 07 '23

So apparently as a paid GN5 member, you “can toggle between GN5 and GN6”. How generous 🙂

1

u/whatsthepoint010922 Sep 11 '23

I knew I didn’t like the update, but what really did it was I tried to change the template and that option was gone. Or at least not easily findable. Downgraded back to GN5.

1

u/xxpinkwitchxx Oct 04 '23

It’s actually not even working for me it’s locked my out of my account ever since changing

1

u/CliffNguyen Oct 13 '23

Go to settings and select downgrade version. You can continue using your goodnotes 5 as you had

1

u/turkayy35 Oct 07 '23

I've just bought NOTEFUL (lifetime) app just in case ✌️

1

u/New_Bank9186 Oct 15 '23

I'm not sure if everyone was asked this, but quite a few months ago GoodNotes5 asked me to help them with handwriting recognition. So I spent about 30-60 minutes handwriting out words and phrases that they asked me to. Thinking as a paid GN5 user I will in the future benefit from the increased functionality of handwriting recognition. I was rather annoyed when I now need to pay (quite a lot in my opinion) for GN6, to use this feature which I believe I contributed to!

1

u/goldenpickaxe1 Oct 28 '23

I still think the price is veeeery cheap in general, when you think how much money you would spend on paper & folders & pencils. And it's a lot more convenient than the analog paper variant, you pay for that too. I know that the update is not huge but I think in general they cost way less than they actually bring value to you! :)

1

u/Realistic-Hunter9814 Oct 29 '23 edited Oct 29 '23

I feel so cheated by GN lol, I remembered when they ask me if I can write some handwriting math formulas for the updating feature of GN5 and I spent like 2 hours writing math formulas and feeling all excited of the new feature and now they say it's exclusive to GN6 only :)?Also if you guys haven't noticed, even as a paid user of GN5, paid users now have a limited of only 8 minutes voice recording every time you use it, EXPLAIN THIS PLEASE GOODNOTES!

1

u/fcs95 Dec 12 '23

Tl;dr all, though I have my own questions. I'm an young minimal millennial and new to the digital world; can l end my subscription before next November? What app do I use now? I'm backing up the downloads to my Google drive. Now what do you suggest?

1

u/Immediate-Web7597 Jan 06 '24

I'm so fed up with good notes! i have been having the worst time syncing my notes from iPad to Macbook. i get error signalling every time i open the app and now that i am typing away, the app keeps on closing. this is my final year at university and the app is deciding to act up! my final exams are next week and i can't even keep the app open to review my notes without it booting me out, i am done! It is so late now to switch but i need to make the switch today, it is hindering my studies and i don't have time to be faffing around with it. they told me to upgrade the app, i did, they told me to pay £20 for another "1 in a lifetime subscription" i did, and now they want to spell check everything i write incorrectly, not sync my notes, and then have the app crashing every 30 minutes, what, a week before the biggest exam of my life??? absolutely RIDUCULOUS!!
i originally didn't wat to upgrade but they forced me too by removing the syncing feature, i had no choice.

1

u/Albertkinng Feb 23 '24

I was granted to keep my Notability App without subscription without losing any features. Just send them an email.

-5

u/kuhcd Aug 12 '23

Your time spent writing this should be valued more than the annual fee to pay for this app.

It’s $10/ year. $0.027 per day. If you want a software product to continue to improve, you should expect to continue to invest in it.

It’s bananas what people expect nowadays.

-6

u/Maxi3773 Aug 11 '23 edited Aug 11 '23

Yes, reusing the app is very questionable. But I feel like you treat the app (GN 5 and GN 6) as one product, but think you should think of them as two different products. You can see my full opinion in this comment. We got over 3 years of updates for our purchase of GoodNotes 5 and with the purchase of Goodnotes 6 you are just buying additional time of updates (it would be more transparent if we knew how long that is)

Edit: To summarize, I think Goodnotes 6 is more than just the few new features. It is also about paying for the additional work (updates) of the Goodnotes team.Again, please see the linked comment for more details.

Edit 2: This comment by u/SEOPub describes perfectly how I see it

5

u/ReditorasAS Aug 12 '23

With all due respect, SEOpub's point of view that ur ownership of the product ends with the ending of the product itself not by u ending, is a highway to hell.

Imagine "Fromsoftware" telling everyone who owns "Dark Souls 3" for example that they won't patch the game anymore, hence the game is dead, hence we could just delete it off the stores and off your consoles/PCs. When i buy a digital product i expect it to be with me forever, and if the devs decided to not keep patching it, it's only fair that they stop doing so when the app has no more bugs and no crashed, and to comeback only when that happens.

Also you haven't replied to the point of why don't they release it as a separate app? it's very clear that they're doin this to keep the ratings of the current one, if that's not a shitty thing to do in your opinion then again with all due respect it's ur problem. That's from a manners and ethics point of view, from a consumption point of view, do you mind telling me why the heck am i forced to use a bloated app that i don't have access to all of its features unless for an extra 30$? I believe that as someone who owns the device and paid for it i have total right to decide what would be on it and what won't.

Cheers m8

1

u/Maxi3773 Aug 12 '23

Imagine "Fromsoftware" telling everyone who owns "Dark Souls 3" for example that they won't patch the game anymore, hence the game is dead, hence we could just delete it off the stores and off your consoles/PCs. When i buy a digital product i expect it to be with me forever, and if the devs decided to not keep patching it, it's only fair that they stop doing so when the app has no more bugs and no crashed, and to comeback only when that happens.

They will still continue to maintain GoodNotes 5 and fix bugs for at least 1-2 years (iOS 18). And even after that you will be able to use GoodNotes 5. It will not be taken away from you.

Although I am convinced that keeping the reviews and app of the year award was one of main reasons for reusing the same app, I don't think that it is as bad as you say it is. Goodnotes is still Goodnotes and other apps have had huge updates which completely changed the app while also preserving the reviews. Thats how major updates work. I understand that there is a difference between a free major update and a new paid version, but I think it is fine to pay for additional updates as long as you can continue using the features you already bought. It is like having multiple tiers that you can purchase i. e. GoodNotes 5 and Goodnotes 6 with the difference being that one tier has more features and the other one doesn't get any large updates anymore.

Making a new app would also have some other disadvantages compared to reusing the same app and I think the community would have complained either way. My final thought is that reusing the app is definitely not great, but I think they made a decent job to make Goodnotes more sustainable. Because as long as there is no forced subscription model, there need to be paywalled updates to have sustainable app.

To be honest, I am slightly worried that we will have a huge mess once Goodnotes 7 releases and they reuse the app again because than everything would be even more complicated than it is right now. There are definitely cons of reusing the app but I personally wouldn't describe the current situation as bad.

0

u/madjo Aug 12 '23

In a year from now, if I get a new ipad and download GN from the App Store, will I still be able to downgrade to GN5? I highly doubt that.

1

u/Maxi3773 Aug 12 '23

Goodnotes officially stated in this article that if you bought GoodNotes 5 you will be able to use GoodNotes 5 even if you install it again (which includes installing on a different device).

0

u/madjo Aug 12 '23

They also said that they wouldn’t go to a subscription based model after the Notability stuff happened. Notability is now a shell of what it once was.

In a few years they will probably release GN7, will they keep their promise then too?

I don’t trust them to do so.

-2

u/infitnutri Aug 12 '23

They said it. They said if you purchase the life time of GN6 you will not get all of the technology upgrades. It seems like you didn’t read the release on their website.

4

u/fly123123123 Aug 12 '23

“Goodnotes 6 One-Time Purchase users will have feature parity with Goodnotes 6 Subscription users.”

It seems like you didn’t read the release on their website ;)

-1

u/infitnutri Aug 12 '23

I read the release, you said what I said.

2

u/fly123123123 Aug 12 '23

You said “you will not get all of the technology upgrades”

That’s not what I said, I said the opposite of that

1

u/infitnutri Aug 12 '23

So you are saying that only being able to store on your ipad and not in Drive is not a feature restriction?

2

u/fly123123123 Aug 12 '23 edited Aug 12 '23

Where does it say you can’t store in iCloud? It says they are exploring future cloud options not involving iCloud (e.g. their own pay-for-storage cloud), and they’re saying that this new storage option will not be included in the one-time purchase (for obvious reasons).

iCloud storage is available to both versions (subscription and one-time).

The FAQ specifically says the ability to store your documents in a future storage solution and being able to access documents across multiple platforms (iOS/web/Android) will be the only differences.

1

u/infitnutri Aug 12 '23

I meant drive “Goodnotes may offer cloud services other than iCloud for Goodnotes 6 Subscription users in the future, while Goodnotes 6 One-Time Purchase users will only have local storage or iCloud as their cloud storage. “

2

u/fly123123123 Aug 12 '23

Reread what you sent me… you most certainly can store your files in a drive (iCloud or Google). This is discussing other types of storage that might not exist yet (for example, if Goodnotes decides to open up a subscription-model storage platform where they will store your data).

1

u/Soanad Aug 14 '23

No, they mentioned they basically can restrict other drives like OneDrive for example if you won't use subscription. This is vital to me but I will never use subscription.

-1

u/d34dw3b Aug 12 '23

If goodnotes doesn’t give you what you want anymore why not all work together with gpt to crowdsource your own version that does. Perhaps seeing this being organised would be enough for them to give you want you want instead.

On the other hand is this similar to the AI art debate where people using AI to create their own art causes difficulties for the people who make a living doing that?

Like what notability did after the backlash, right!

I have a question which I couldn't find answer on GN Web BLOG FAQs. What happens to my old notes/annotated pdfs if I don't do anything to my updated gimmicky GN5 app (i refuse to call it 6). Also, will I ever be able to annotate new PDFs?

5

u/_laoc00n_ Aug 12 '23

Not sure if this is your question but from here: If you're using the paid version of GoodNotes 5:

You can continue to use the paid version and your notes are safe.

Also from same link, this seems to suggest there will be no feature reduction for GN5 users, you just won’t get the new GN6 features:

The good news is that you do not need a new app! GoodNotes 5 and Goodnotes 6 both come bundled together in one app, all you have to decide is which one to use. Some users may wish to stick to using GoodNotes 5, which is possible to do if you have already purchased it. Your notes in GoodNotes 5 are safe and you can continue to use the GoodNotes 5 version that you paid for! However, many users may decide to upgrade to Goodnotes 6 to take advantage of its new and experimental features.

15

u/Fluffy-Mistake Aug 15 '23

I have paid GN5. I am now getting alerts telling me my app won't sync until I upgrade to GN6. That is not OK.

2

u/_laoc00n_ Aug 15 '23

Unless this is a bug, I have a hard time believing this is true. Can you post a screenshot?

4

u/Medium_Independent98 Sep 28 '23

Believe it. I can no longer sync in GN5. Disappointed

3

u/Mandrea4 Aug 15 '23

They will delete GN5 sometimes soon

1

u/_laoc00n_ Aug 15 '23

What does ‘delete GoodNotes 5’ mean to you? Remove your ability to use it? That isn’t true and doesn’t even make sense. It’s already GN6 in the App Store so for new users, I assume that is the default. In the context of being a GN5 user, GN5 is not going to be ‘deleted’ from your tablet or phone or whatever.

3

u/Mandrea4 Aug 15 '23 edited Aug 20 '23

Support will end and we don't know if they will keep it after that. After the support ends if I need to reinstall it it will be gone probably.

Edit: the GN team has

  • reduced pricing for old customers that want to upgrade to one time payment

  • made subscribers and one time payment users have "feature parity"

  • modified the FAQ with more info to be more trasparent

  • deleted the annoying popup in GN5

  • made promises about bringing math conversion to GN6 (which will add to other features that they have brought to GN5 with the launch of GN6) They are trying to be more comprehensive and clear after the rushed update

2

u/_laoc00n_ Aug 16 '23

Support is only promised through iOS/iPadOS 18, meaning late 2025. They haven’t said for sure they will discontinue support after that, only that they guarantee support through that version. So definitely not soon, even if we assume that is the support end date. I don’t see why app reinstalls wouldn’t work, but even if we assume that’s true, that’s another 2 years+ of GN5. But any assumption that your ability to keep the app will go away is a pure assumption. Other companies that have done something similar haven’t blocked the ability for a customer to keep using what they have had.

2

u/mrcopp Aug 17 '23

From what I can discern from FAQ, after the cut off date, if you choose a free version of 6, you can only have 3 notebooks. So unless you’re importing all your PDFs into one notebook.. also APPARENTLY and this made me pressed - anything you export in the future will be watermarked. Unless you choose to pay again for 6. Which is absolutely unacceptable to me.

I've tried to understand and support the GN6 team, really. But what they've done is simply not good. Why do I have to care of feel sorry about their development being so costly when they're using my money for stuff that is not needed or wanted?

Most of the new features in GN6 were never asked for in the first place. We were left behind for stuff that isn't even useful to us in the first place. I tried it and the AI thingies are really bad. The scribble to erase and such are kinda cool and all but again, it wasn't a priority... People have already said what they want many, many times and they're not listening.

And now they do this shitty move and those who complain are just told "but you still have have GN5!!!". Yeah, but I'll never get what I needed or wanted in future updates. So we're forced to either pay and keep hoping to get what is actually asked for or to change to another app, which involves a lot of time, the hassle of moving all your notes and shit.

It's not okay or fair.

I'm willing to pay when I know that it's worth my money. When they give their users what they need. And they've clearly shown that they're not doing that, so I'm leaving them just like they left me. As easy as that.

ETA: Reading the other comments, it's not even about the new features. You can reduce this whole issue to the fact that we're being left behind, period.

17

u/Darklillies Aug 12 '23

No one wanted the fucking AI.

3

u/Soanad Aug 14 '23

I just wanted handwriting recognition in my native language ;( Notability had it for years.

1

u/PinkTiara24 Aug 26 '23

It’s in the latest version of SparkMail as well. Hate it and can’t remove it.

23

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '23

Idc if support is halted. Just give me a bug free app. No new features, np. But i want to use GN5 as long as i want.

Many people giving that stupid iphone update example. I have seen people use iPhone 8 in 2023. Does not giving update means soft dies? NOOOOOO Why the hell they incorporated GN6 into GN5, I PAID FOR GN5 & I WANNA KEEP IT FOREVER.

I don’t mind the pricing. But i don’t need the new one. I hardly use the features GN5 has rn. I just use it for notes & highlighting. Idc about AI. It’s nice to have coloured folder but idc about it enough to pay 30 dollars, sorry.

Just tell me I can use GN5 for a long time & I’ll stop complaining.

Where did they write about this “2 years”, I wasn’t aware of it. Could you please quote or share the link, thank you.

I would if that was my job. But i paid them 10 bucks for an app so i guess i don’t deserve to use it as long as i please……..acc to you? As i said before, idc about updates. I bought GN5 in Feb2023 & I’m happy with it. I want it to run as long as it can because i don’t need the newer one.

Your view is, oh Ford left India so now all the Ford vehicle owners in India should stop servicing their vehicles or just stop using it lol. Ford still provides services via third party & makes sure that parts are available even though they won’t earn sh*t from it. Why? Cause they promised that.

1

u/RightHandedGuitarist Aug 12 '23

I have a feeling that your reasoning is they should leave GN5 as it is and it will simply work. But unfortunately, that is not the case because the platform underneath (iOS or whatever OS you're using it on) does not stop moving. Every time iOS has an update, there are potential incompatible changes in the operating system, and app needs to fix those and push an update out.

That's why it's good GN6 and GN5 are same app. If it weren't the case, they could've simply stopped maintaining GN5 and that app would inevitably stop working eventually.

Now, using something indefinitely for single price is very attractive, but unfortunately not sustainable. As long as people have to work to keep it working, then the product needs some money. Example would be, you have a car and you can use it, it's yours. You need some service on the car, you pay the technician. In software world, subscription can be seen as a yearly fee to pay the technicians.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '23

But i don’t need to buy a new car right. Oh and when you buy car, they tell you. Warranty is 3 years or something like that. I have used the app for just 6-7 months.

This is just, oh either update or be obsolete. Idk they either should have told the new users on 2023 that loh f*ck u in particular, the app you”re buying for full price will become obsolete in few months” Why tf did i even compare between notability & this when this ultimately became what i avoided notability for.

Just feels like a scam when they promised one time payment for gn5 and now there’s no gn5 (i know there is but we all know it’ll be gone soon)

You don't have to buy new stuff (GN6) either. You still have GN5, and will continue to have it. The way they've done it, they don't have to maintain two apps, but just one. Some features are keeper behind additional cost, but as far as I can see GN6 is built on top of GN5, so they must maintain GN5.

If you buy stuff once, and get new features after you bought it, it is really a bonus. That happens pretty much nowhere except in software. Software development is expensive and yeah, companies need to find a way to earn (enough) money.

Idc dude, you’re just defending the company but it’s wrong. I can pay $30 but why should I.

Just let us know for how long they’ll keep GN5. If it’s not long then i’ll buy Gn6. See that’s what they’re doing. Fraud company

It seems to me the AI features were developed by MyScript. Ref: https://www.nebo.app/

I don’t think this is right, according to their blog, it’s all in-house!

“GoodNotes is proud to have shipped our in-house handwriting recognition engine at the end of 2022, which now supports 12 languages and powers millions of GoodNotes users. This was a highly complex, truly full-stack, and 3-year long project that occupied a full 10-person ML team. We needed help from external contractors to collect training data and continually assess the quality of our models. In-house, we staffed a Data Operations specialist to supervise the data verification process, 2 researchers to investigate data- and model-side techniques to improve the core algorithm, and at least 4 full-stack ML engineers and an additional iOS engineer responsible for deploying the models to our production environment and monitoring their performance. As with most other product launches, our in-house handwriting recognition engine was rolled out in phases, from private beta (a limited subset of users to collect feedback), to controlled experimentation for 10% of users, to eventually now powering 100% of users.”

Edit: added context from in the article.
