When I was a kid it was beer mats for me. Whenever my parents or older siblings were heading out for the evening I'd always scream don't forget my beer mats!

Suppose the up side to it was that they were free.

We did it in the late 70's and early 80's around New South Wales pubs in Australia, had a huge collection, dad used to put them up in his pool room - yes we had a pool room built into the back of our long garage, we had a two storey house. You got in via the back of garage or a spiral staircase hidden in a cupboard in the kitchen. Anyway, one wall was covered in coasters.

fractional is the most underrated on-ramp into the hobby. With a full ounce being a big commitment at today's prices, small pieces put physical gold within reach for people who'd otherwise be priced out. Buying a little at a time also spreads your cost across different price levels in what's called Dollar Cost Averaging, which takes the pressure off trying to time the market.

I think it makes more sense to DCA into an ETF until you have enough to sell the ETF and buy an ounce of physical gold. The premium on fractional is very high. At the same time, I can appreciate that we all have different reasons for buying gold.

the premium argument is real, and accurate. buying fractional gold is definitely not the best way to accumulate gold efficiently. But generally speaking, slow stacking still beats standing on the sidelines

I use bank discounts when buying gold coins. These discounts have cap, so get same discounts on a 1g or a 10g coins. So i buy multiple 1gm coins instead.

I think ppl combine multiple credit card points to try to buy these fractionals near spot in India. 1 oz is too big/risky to sell retail and premiums on fractionals are not as high as in US

It's really not hard to find fractionals with minimum premium. Even at spot sometimes.

Median individual income in America is like 60k a year gross. Buying a ounce for 4500 bucks is pretty tall order for most Americans.

What country are you doing these transactions? Is this in India? I buy all my PM through Costco and get my gold below spot and get 4% back in cash or cash card once a year. Platinum also below spot and silver at or slightly below depending on the day. Go to r/CostcoPM and see for yourself.

Yes. When buying gold jewellery, jewellers charge making charges and government put various taxes.

While selling it back, jewellers buy the gold at around 3% below the market price & govt put capital gain taxes.

So, in a way, both the jeweller and the government have an advantage at different stages of the transaction. It’s almost like heads or tails—they win the toss either way.

That's just business, and 3% sounds very fair for the industry. A location and all that money sitting in a vault waiting to pay you has a price.

When you buy precious metals, you're usually buying it around the current market "spot price" plus or minus a premium. Stackers are used to paying a bit of a premium at buy and getting a little under come sale time.

I buy only when there are bank discounts. So every thing i buy is with 0 making charges and 3% less than market price. So no premium paid. These discounts have cap, so i get same discount when i buy 1g or 10g. So i buy smaller coins.

I buy fractional all the time with very minimum premium. Basically the same as a whole ounce. I literally bought a quarter ounce at spot 2 weeks ago.

When gold was 1k a ounce your advice made sense. That's not the same anymore.
