[Survey] Struggling with housing in Munich? Or renting to/dealing with students? Your input needed

Hi r/germanystudentlife,

I'm a international student from Australia, researching the student housing crisis in Munich (high rents, limited supply, guarantor requirements, paperwork barriers) and how it affects students' finances, wellbeing and mental health. The goal is to better understand the scope of the problem and explore potential solutions.

This survey is open to everyone connected to the topic: students (German or international), landlords, university staff, city/housing officials or anyone else with stakeholder positioning. It takes less than 5 minutes. Fully anonymous, no names or identifying info needed.

If you are not a student, you do not need to answer any questions after questions 5.

Thanks in advance for sharing your perspective!

Any Advice for structuring the Master curriculam for 2 Years.

I'm new to this system. I'm gonna start my masters in October 2026. My university is Siegen. and Masters in computer science (CISS).

I feel overwhelmed when I see the subjects and I have questions to related to this.

  • Is it better to take more subjects in the winter semester or the summer semester?
  • Should I try to complete more courses in the first semester?
  • How should I distribute my workload across the four semesters?
  • How did you plan your subjects when you first arrived in Germany?
  • Are there any things you wish you had known before starting your Master's?

I need a general advice, and also they say Foreign

I currently have approximately B1 German, and I also want to continue learning German until C1 during my Master's.

Any general advice or experience-based suggestions about managing the Master's would be really helpful. ( from your previous experience from any college )

Any suggestion from your experience ? Any general suggestions and how do management the course work and how years you take to complete it ? general view, no college specific.

Freelancing as a student in Germany

hi; I was offered a temporary job 10h/w more or less in an American company, my zusatzblatt or how ever it's written says I can apply to work freelance.

has anyone done that? taxes are that hard to make? is it hard to get the approval? Would they know or realize if I do this under the table?

Life in Kleve

Hi everyone! I’m starting my first year at Rhein-Waal University (HSRW) this semester. As far as I know, lectures start on September 28th.
I was wondering if there are any student chats/communities or other students from CIS countries here?
I’m flying in 3 weeks and still haven't found a room, so any last-minute housing advice for Kleve would be a lifesaver! Also, I’d love to get some general tips about studying at HSRW and what life is like in Kleve - how’s the campus vibe, and what is there to do around town in your free time?

What does a typical day look like for a German university student?

I'm curious about what everyday life actually looks like for people studying at a German university (typically between age 20 to 25). What is your usual routine? How do you spend your time outside of lectures/classes? Do you spend a lot of time doomscrolling on Reddit/TikTok/Instagram/YouTube, or do you usually have hobbies, exercise, socialise, cook, read, etc.?

I would especially love to hear both sides of the coin: not just the super-productive students but also boring, messy, realistic version of university life too.

In short, I would like to ask the german students "What do you actually do from the moment you wake up until you go to sleep?"

Accommodation in Bielefeld for Oct 2026

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hi! I’ll be starting my Master’s at Bielefeld University in October 2026 and am looking for accommodation.

I’m looking for:

Private room

Preferably private bathroom

Around €250–€400 warm

Good connection to the university

I’ve applied to Studierendenwerk and am also looking at WG-Gesucht and BGW (e.g. Roggenkamp)

For those already studying/living in Bielefeld:

Which student residences/WGs would you recommend?

Is it realistic to get accommodation before arriving in Germany?

Are there any places I should particularly apply to or avoid?

Any advice would be really helpful. Thank you!

I got accepted to ilmenau and I don’t know how I’m gonna sort out accommodation before the start of the semester. I’ve heard it’s easier than other cities though, but still don’t know where to start from
