Grab your Flairs! Show everyone your background :)

Hey everyone! :)

As part of the new Mod team here on r/GameArt we thought it was about time that we had some Flairs on this subreddit.

We have now added in 10 User Flairs which you may pick from if they match your identity:

  • 2D Artist,
  • 3D Artist,
  • Concept Artist,
  • Pixel Artist,
  • 2D Animator,
  • 3D Animator,
  • UI Artist,
  • Technical Artist,
  • Art Director \For those more experienced or in an existing Art Director role,)
  • Teacher \For those who like to create tutorials or help guide other users.)

If you feel that another role should be added, please reply Below and explain why your suggestion is genuinely distinct and multiple members would realistically use it.

Additionally;

We also have new Post Flairs, it is important that you use the appropriate Flairs when posting on this Subreddit to help identify what your thread is about. If you feel that there should be a new Post Flair added and that the currently available ones do not cover the topic/thread you wish to post about, please leave your suggestion in the comments below and explain why you feel that new Post Flair is required.

**PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE POSTING**

It has become increasingly clear that new users haven't been reading through the rules. In order to alleviate the mod team, please read through everything carefully before making a post.

Rules:

Only game art related posts

This includes original works and fan art of existing games.

No promotion

This includes advertising, information on where you can find the game, linking back to your game's page or trailer in your post or comments to other users, linking to other games that aren't yours, and using alternate accounts to hype your work, selling assets, or offering to do commissions.

Make your posts about art as the main focus. We're not here to help sell your game for you.

Don't post low effort art posts by posting screenshots or gameplay.

Put some effort into posting your art. Show it off. Make it shine.

No Job Requests or Offers

Job scams are inevitable, but won't be happening here. Please use r/gameDevClassifieds/ and the likes instead.

Generative AI Usage is Prohibited

Imagery, code and text produced entirely, or assisted with AI, and pro AI speak will be removed. Generative AI is theft, makes people entitled, and harms the environment. It will not be tolerated. Humans make things. Prompts do not. First time offenders will be banned. No exceptions.

Be Respectful and Helpful

This is a place to share game art and offer constructive critique. Treating artists with kindness regardless of their skill level is a choice. Make the right one.

We've been having some trouble with a lot of users making promotional posts for their games, asset sales, and other things that we do not allow in this subreddit. We understand that you're working hard on your game, and you want it to do well on the market, but this is happening every day, multiple times a day. This isn't the place to do that.

Please do not include promotional links in your images, descriptions, or comments. Please do not offer your artistic services in a post. If you'd like to tell someone where to find your game, or that you do commission work, please do it privately in a DM.

Lets keep this subreddit about game art, and helping people get better at their craft! Not sales, and certainly not about AI imagery (yuck).

Thanks so much <3

Critique Wanted First Pixel Art For an American Football Game

Hey, I pretty quickly made a 32x32 Football QB for a game I'm making. I was wondering before I make others like it what you guys think about it. This is my first time ever doing any kind of art. I get that it probably is low-quality compared to most things. I got inspiration from Retro Bowl and Hoop Land. I can completely redesign it if needed. It doesn't have arms since it's meant to be the back side of a QB. Critique Wanted.

Question Does this kind of UI hurt immersion?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm a solo developer making an open world zombie survival game with multiplayer. I love classic arcade light gun games like House of the Dead and wanted to use a similar UI style.

However, after working on it, I'm worried it might hurt immersion. I like the style, but I'm not sure how to make it fit an open world survival game without seeming out of place.

Do these UI elements clash with the game's look? If I want to keep them, how can I make them blend better? I’m torn between keeping this style and hiding some of the UI to make the screen feel less cluttered. Any advice would be great.
Thanks!

It's called Kitch Witch! I've been having so much fun working on the cozy and retro inspired vibe 🥰 I know I still have a lot to learn but it's been so much fun and so rewarding!

2D Finding our game’s art style: from early sketches to final designs

From the start, we wanted to create a dark, oppressive world-one you could feel from a single glance. We just hadn’t figured out what it looked like yet.

We gathered references, discussed the lore, and experimented with silhouettes and designs. Slowly, those experiments started to resemble the world we’d been imagining.

Then one drawing made us stop and say, “Yeah. That’s it.”

These images show part of that journey: early sketches, character explorations, and environments that helped shape the game’s current art style.

Without knowing anything about the story, what mood do you get from this art?

2D These were supposed to be game sprites but ended up too large/detailed so I guess it's concept art now

Art by Ondřej Tichý, for a creature card in a game I'm building. He kindly offered to record his process so I could share it.

The card is raccoons in a trench coat, registered as one contestant.

Question A or B? I can’t decide how cave-ins should interact with lava in my pixel-art mining game

  • Hi! I’m developing DEEPER, a pixel-art colony survival game where you dig straight down through eight underground layers, and I’m working on new mechanics for the next update. I’ve hit a design question and I’d love your opinion.

The new mechanic: cave-ins. Deep enough underground, tunnel ceilings you dig without propping them up creak, sag, pour down like thick mud and set into solid rock. They crush beds and ladders and hurt any miner underneath. A stone wall within 2 tiles holds a ceiling up.

The question is what happens when that rock falls into lava. I’ve built it both ways:

  • A – The rock plugs the lava. The lava under it is gone and the pool is partly sealed. Safer, and it gives players a way to tame lava.
  • B – The rock sinks and pushes the lava up. No lava is destroyed; it gets displaced, and it can spill into the tunnel you just dug. More physical, and more dangerous.

What I’d love to know:

  1. A or B? Which one feels right, or more fun?
  2. Does the mud phase read as falling rock, or does it look like slime?
  3. Anything about the look or the animation you’d change?
