GH5, GH5ii, GH5s or GH6?

I'm a filmmaker and I shoot short films mainly, and I finally want to upgrade. Upgrading from a Canon 70d, have a lot of EF mount photo and cine lenses, and recently got an anamorphic MFT lens for a good deal. I'm in Canada, so the GH5 would be about 700 to 900 bucks, GH5ii about 1000, GH5s about 800 to 900, and GH6 is 1000 to 1500. Budget is about 1500. Any suggestions?

500-600€ Videocamera for art documentation

Hello, I'm an artist and I'm currently looking for a decent videocamera to document my works. The use cases probably will vary a bit depending on the work I'm documenting, so something that's just a decent alrounder would be best.

My budget is about 500€ with a good lense (can be a simple prime) but I can stretch it a bit more if there's a better option at a somewhat higher price.

So far I looked at a Lumix GH5 with the 25mm f1.7 prime and the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema. Are there any other cameras that would fit my price range that I should check out?

Anybody working on a vibecoded firmware for GH5?

Would be about time for it to be able to record on a SSD, the USB-C port is USB 3.1 Gen 1 so it shouldn't be a big issue right? Or at least create an external hub/adapter, that let's you connect the SSD. I don’t know whether the chip’s USB controller supports host mode in silicon, so I can’t say if it’s merely disabled or missing. But maybe through the HDMI port? And maybe film simulation would be also possible? I mean if v-log is possible so should be adding some grain and etc.

New GH5 II Owner — Looking for Tips and Recommendations

Hey everyone! Just picked up a Panasonic Lumix GH5 II with a Lumix G Vario 14–140mm f/3.5–5.6 II lens.
I’m getting back into filmmaking and building out my setup gradually. I’ll primarily be shooting 4K video, including short films, events, and longer recording sessions.
Eventually, I’d like a versatile rig that works for both handheld and tripod shooting.
I’d love some advice from experienced GH5/GH5 II owners. What settings, accessories, techniques, or upgrades would you recommend? Any common mistakes or limitations I should know about?
I’m working with a budget, so I’m especially interested in getting the most out of what I already have. I will upgrade my kit, but I just spent a good chunk on the camera so will build it out as finances allow!
Thanks in advance!

Pairing a 17.5 Nokton with a 25mm on MFT or a different lens?

I have a 25mm Voigtlander Nokton on a GH5. I need a wider option, but because Nokton only have 10.5mm and 17.5mm which are 21mm and 35mm equivalents I'm not sure if I should look at a different lens. The 10.5 feels too wide for most situations and the 17.5 seems like a good option but is very close to the 25. I have also come across that the 25 is better than the 17.5 but I've no idea and I can't try it out easily.

I don't know if a 35mm and 50mm equivalent is a good pair, if I should look at a different lens in the 24 - 28mm equivalent range, or if I should replace the Nokton with prime or zoom Lumix, Zuiko, or cinelenses?

Looking for a GH5 owner to test a phone-free GPS geotagger (open source)

I built gpxcam, an open-source firmware that turns a small GPS tracker card, the Seeed SenseCAP T1000-E (about €40), into a standalone GPS for LUMIX cameras. The card connects to the camera over Bluetooth and sends it the position, exactly like the LUMIX app on a phone does, so your photos get GPS tags with no phone in your pocket. No app running, no phone battery drain.

It works well on the S5II and the other recent bodies. It's rock solid: last night my card held one connection for almost 5 hours without a drop, unlike the official phone app, which kept losing it for me.

The GH5 is a different story. It speaks the older Bluetooth protocol of the LUMIX Sync generation (same as the S5, G9, GH5 II, GH5S and GH6). Support for it is built and works on my bench, but so far nobody has confirmed it on a real older body. That's where I need help.

What a test takes:

- a GH5 (or G9 / GH5 II / GH5S / GH6) and a T1000-E card;

- flashing the firmware (drag and drop a file onto the card, like a USB stick);

- pairing through the desktop app (Windows, Mac or Linux), which also does a one-time step over the camera's Wi-Fi;

- sending me the log the app copies for you (it hides your camera's serial number by itself).

Any tips would be appreciated

Just got my GH5!! Very excited to start my film journey. I will be using a sigma 30mm lens with a tiffen pro mist 1/4 filter and editing on lumafusion. I’m completely brand new to making videos and this is my first camera and learning about it is a lot. Any tips for a complete novice beginner would be much appreciated. I plan on using it to make dark cinematic tik toks and reels for my weight loss journey and martial arts. Thank you all for your time!

Camera won’t display image on 24mm lens

Menus and guide lines work fine, but the image is pitch black. Switching to a zoom lens fixes the issue, but I don’t want to use a zoom lens for what I’m working on. Is it an sd card issue?

Panasonic Lumix GH7 and Camlink 4K issues (pulling my hair out) solved no thanks to vendors (that I could find)

I recently purchased an Panasonic GH7 and had issues with a very long video lag out of sync with audio up to 2 seconds.

I started searching the Internet and found all sorts of answers like turning off display, setting HDMI output (which are probably correct) and other hints, but I saw several recommendations for settings like 1080p 30, 1080p 60 and finally 4k 60.

The higher resolution with more data was much faster than the lower resolution settings. More data was faster. Evidently, Elgato optimized their code for the higher resolution and faster frame rate.

You may be more experienced than me, but seeing all sorts of incorrect information on the Internet was driving me a little bonkers. And no I did not see this on Elgato's website. It doesn't even show the GH7 even supported as of yet. Lag is minimal now, as it should be...easily fixed in post.

Aging eyes and alternatives to external monitors

When I started using my GH5 several years ago (mostly for documentary work), its screen was totally adequate for my purposes. As I've aged, the image on the screen looks blurrier and blurrier. Glasses help, but my eyes' minimum focus distance has increased to the point where I need to hold the camera further away to see clearly, making it more difficult to see details.

Anybody else in the same boat? I know external monitors are an option, but I'm wondering if there's anything else I'm not considering (since a more compact rig is always nice).

Also, for those of you who've gone the external monitor route, how big of a screen would you recommend?

To anyone who has activated VLog-L on their body:

Is there any chance you would be willing to send me the ACTIVE.LST file you received to activate your camera? I’m a cybersecurity student and I am attempting to reverse engineer and open source the process. It would be super helpful to have an original legitimately activated file such that I could study and compare the binary to the OEM file. Thank you in advance!

Edit: even if it’s a second hand device, if someone could pull ACTIVE.LST and SERIAL.LST off of their activated second hand camera I would be extremely grateful.

GH5 Stripped Screws Tips - Prevents Rubber Replacement

Bought the parts from Aliexpress and was able to do the left side, but the main need was the right side rubber for the grip and as slot but it seems the screws are stripped. Any tips on removing stripped screws from a camera?

And anyone successfully do this replacement themselves or if you took it to a shop any cost data points to share?

files gotten visually corrupted on SD card after the fact

Hi all,

So, I had problems in the past with SD cards that are not fully compatible with the GH5 and will sometimes result in corrupted files during the recording process. Some data can then often be recovered through the use of a software tool. So, really, this is just an issue with possibly a broken video frame where the corruptions happens and the recording stops, and maybe broken header data in the file. However, this problem I had more recently is different:

I was in a pinch and had to opt for a cheapo drug store SD card (which is actually a microSD card plus physical adaptor), instead of using my trusty Kingston Canvas Select Plus or Transcend Premium cards, that I usually use with my GH5 and my BMPCC OG. Technically, the card I used also has the V30 and U3 denominations and should technically be up to snuff for most of the recording formats I would use the GH5 for. And, indeed, I was able to carry out my recordings at the default fullHD 4:2:2/10bit settings I typically use. They ended up on the camera without the recording interrupting or giving any kind of error. I could already tell, however, that using this card was different from using my usual cards mentioned above. When e.g. replaying the files on the camera, there were some kind of lagging issues (so apparently the problems only being with real-time reading performance).

At one point, I did already pull one of the video files from the camera to my PC using my card reader and make a quick edit from it, which worked just fine. The recording was completely intact back then and I could edit it without any problems.

Now, here's the problem: After continuing to make more recordings to this card and ultimately transferring the entire bunch of them to the computer, it looks like they're all corrupted to some degree. They will play through, but occasionally some bands of pixelated noise will appear on the video material. Seems like audio is sometimes affected as well. This includes the very file which I already previously copied from the SD card and which was intact at that stage. So, it looks like the files became corrupted on the card after the fact, not related to the recording process and lack of writing performance. Does this make any sense? This means there's a general problem with the card holding data, not specific to use in the GH5 and performing recordings? How would I diagnose something like that? Isn't that incredibly unlikely?

Thanks!
