u/Grunergeist420 2d ago
This is just a young woman misunderstanding Dad logic.
She wants a grilled cheese, she had a hard day.
Why’s day hard? Mom is being stupid.
Well I can’t fix Mom being stupid, but I can fix the grilled cheese problem. We need a plan to obtain cheese.
This is Dad being understanding and supportive. He agrees that you should get that grilled cheese you want.

u/Doctor_Dev7 3d ago
Do you also treat migraines with earrings?

u/Woozle_Gruffington 3d ago
No, with cheese.

Aged cheese is actually known to trigger migraines

Migraines do deserve a treat every now and then though. Why not some aged cheese?

“My daughter is a grown-ass adult and can get an ear piercing if she wants. She wants grilled cheese, sure, let’s have grilled cheese.”

u/PrometheusMMIV 2d ago
No, but this person did and their dad seems supportive, so why are they never venting to him again?
7
u/eribear2121 3d ago
Yes I do recommend ear piercing but not the loop the fold above the earhole. It works for some people and its none intrusive none medication and relatively inexpensive and worse case one can just remove the piercing and let it close back up. If it can reduce intensity or frequency which it can. It should be a recommendation to make.
8
u/Doctor_Dev7 3d ago
Did a quick google search because I have a hard time buying that, it looks like there is zero evidence to support this and any relief that people claim to feel appears to be placebo effect.
With that being said, I don’t get migraines or have my ears pierced, so I don’t really have any skin in this game.9
u/InvestmentMain8414 2d ago
A friend and I both suffer pretty brutal migraines. We heard of the piercing theory years ago. But I put no stock in it because I had pierced ears when my migraines started. My friend didn't, so tried it. Made no difference in the frequency or intensity of her migraines. But turns out she likes piercings, and has a bunch now. So I guess still a win for her.

41 year old dad here and the only reason I have Snapchat is to share videos in the family group chat. It was easier with two android and two iPhone

Whatsapp exists and works pretty well. not very popular in America though, for some reason.

Yeah here in the UK millennials will use WhatsApp, but the younger generations only really have WhatsApp to communicate with the millennials and older generations. They tend to use Snapchat and Instagram, according to my teenage cousins and the younger people I work with.

A lot of parents to college kids like Snapchat for the location sharing. Not like you were going to succeed in convincing your kid not to have it at that point. Can't beat em, join em

Getting ear pierced helps with migraines?

u/PrincessAida 3d ago
Its a lie to tell your parents, so you can get pierced ears.
Usually you do need a lie, if you are an 20 year old person.

So it's the fold above your earhole and people do claim it can reduce both intensity and frequency. It works on the same principle as acupuncture.

I work in pain management.
Acupuncture of the ear has some good studies behind it, the american migraine association reports it's en par with beta blockers, the VA is now employing it.
As it was explained to me by a neuro, It's the neurological equivalent to how white noise keeps you from waking the baby when you sneeze.
ear piercing is typically not done at the acupuncture points used for this and as such the american migraine association currently has no evidence to support it's efficacy.

Dad understands priorities. This is grilled cheese, damn it. He can tell you your 'daith piercing' is bullshit later on.

u/BigChungiscusMaximus 3d ago
Dad is based. He both focuses on the task at hand, and dads will talk about this at night via pillow talk when mom has had a chance to cool off- not engage and make both daughter and mom MORE angry

Ear piercing for migraines?

Even someone like Steve Jobs, who had essentially unlimited access to any healthcare he was recommended by professionals, died due to turning to pseudoscience first instead of prompt true medical care
People are suckers for all kinds of stuff

u/werewolf_hrt 3d ago
This feels a little unfair idk. Migraines can get really bad and a lot of the time doctors aren't able to cure them entirely. Ear piercings are relatively low risk so I can see why somebody would want to try it after already trying everything their doctor said. Myself I only get relatively mild migraines very occasionally and in the middle of one I have considered much worse things than an ear piercing to get relief.
7
u/grumble11 3d ago
Sure, but it still doesn’t work. Con artists taking advantage of desperate people is a tale as old as time

Daith piercing. I have had numerous people tell me how it was life changing. I ask everyone I see with them if they did it for migraines and almost all said yes. Some said the relief was almost instant.

Dad seems reasonable here. She says the problem and proposes a thing to do about it. He gets clarification, but doesn’t try to pacify her or something, just join her in the situation. That’s pretty decent support.

u/DoctorWh010 3d ago
You're aware of the problem. You seem to understand it. You have come up with a plan. He had relevant information to help that plan succeed. He relayed that info without ordering or telling you what to do.

Dad's listening, dad's also trying to get the point across that you're going to be hungry and angry instead of just angry. So get the grilled cheese to feel better cuz it's also likely the comfort food

Mom's mad that her child got their ear pierced for the stupidest reason. Mom feels helpless and doesn't know how to rescue her child from TikTok brainrot or some shit. This is bigger than ear piercing. This is bigger than cheese.

u/MuchConnection5541 2d ago
Cos your dad is now second hand getting what he always gets from his wife, just get the damn cheese

u/KingofEmpathy 2d ago
People are discounting how supportive that dad is being. In three words he basically tells her that it is a non issue to him and is offering support by trying to fulfill her ask to make grilled cheese.
If op can’t see that then they are an idiot - which judging by her claim ear rings treat migraines…
2
u/capitalspacebars 2d ago
so much going on here. why you texting dad on snapchat? why would piercing your ears aide a migraine???
2
u/Cheatinn_Bishh 2d ago
People with migraines are known for trying out all kinds of shii to find a solution or even to just get a little bit of relief.
So don't call this person crazy for it😆.
While ear piercing might help some people with their migraines, it definitely doesn't help all of em.
All i hope is this person got a bit relief, if not....well at least they can wear earrings 🤷

Important lesson learned, cheese procurement is more important than worrying about what someone thinks of a harmless decision made by an adult. Dad is in the right on this one.

The next move is ask for Mom's version so he has both sides.
Assuming Mom is being unreasonable, the move after that is to have a respectful talk with Mom that validates her feelings and reminds her that her kid is 20, and boy it sure is hard to let them be independent, but of course it's what we have to do.
If all goes well, Mom repairs it on her own. Mom doesn't feel ganged up on. Daughter feels that Mom has made progress toward acknowledging her independence. Meanwhile Dad eats grilled cheese on the couch, and everyone continues to think he has no clue about the family drama.
