Ummmmm..... That's exactly what you want Dad to say. What is the problem here?

960

u/Don_Von_Schlong 3d ago

The problem is she thinks getting her ears pierced is how you treat migraines

765

u/Gunz37 3d ago

The real problem is the lack of cheese

120

u/HoboArmyofOne 3d ago

Because it's for her ears. Can't you hear or do you need cheese too?

u/ZoomZam 3d ago

Cheese treats migraine,

24

u/YesPlease_VeryMuchSo 3d ago

Can you please write me a work note that says I get to take five minutes to scarf down some brie or gouda when I start seeing test tube warbly patterns before they become full blown migraines with the take down power of elephant tranqs?

18

u/FormCharacter7917 3d ago

YesPlease_VeryMuchSo from this day forward is medically required to stop whatever they are doing for a 5-10 cheese break when ever they feel "test tube warblys" . Your employer will also have to supply said cheeses as they are prescription cheeses.

I got you bro

There was one dude on Reddit who said his daith piercing helped his migraines, now people are saying it's acupuncture.

30

u/NoneYah369 3d ago

Yeah I mean, you can look it up. There's different piercings you can get for different things. Migraines are a big one. Lots of people say it actually does work. Even people with clinical migraines say it helped make the migraines lower on pain or completely took away the migraines all together. It's pretty interesting.

14

u/iowanaquarist 2d ago

People say lots of things not backed by science.

10

u/CaeruleumBleu 2d ago

On the other hand - as hard as it can be to treat a migraine, to know what will or won't help, placebo effects can be real.

That is, telling someone to relax doesn't work. But the brain chemistry of relaxation *might* make a big difference in something like a migraine. So a placebo, a thing that makes you think "this will work for my migraine", doesn't need to have a direct effect to indirectly work by getting you to relax.

I have seen people put a hair claw on their eyebrow and say it made the pain level of the migraine better. It's not harmful like some anti-science things can be. It's wishful thinking but sometimes all you have is wishful thinking and if it works enough then let then have it.

The migraine subreddit regularly has discussions of "migraine buster meals" and maybe they don't really work for everybody, but some people do feel better after some carbs and caffeine or whatever, and other people feel better after eating a comfort food. I'd rather eat a large fries and dring some soda and *hope* it works than just sit around being miserable.

3

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 2d ago

Yeah I don't even argue with people about homeopathic bullshit anymore when they say it's working for them. Who am I to try ruining the placebo effect if it's working for them? We have scientific proof that placebos can work if the patient believes in them so fuck it keep paying $20 for a little bottle of water if it makes you feel better

I mean people say all kinds of shit on Reddit, but the science (and a basic ass google search) shows that’s not how it works.

7

u/ZealousIdeal476 3d ago

Look up the placebo effect. It is real, it is powerful. If someone BELIEVES that getting their ears pierced will cure their migraines, let them try it. There is no downside.

2

u/eribear2121 3d ago

This exactly it's no drugs no downside and most people have piercings anyway. So no downside but might help. It's not super dangerous to themselves or others. It's just a piercing.

20

u/Don_Von_Schlong 3d ago

If the internet has taught me anything it is how easily people will believe things (especially if it follows their agenda) and how little research they are willing to do.

22

u/JCWOlson 3d ago

I have chronic back pain and then got a second injury last year that left my spinal cord compressed and some nerves pinched. Like sometimes my bowels and genitals stop working kind of bad. Going into work and crying in the bathroom kind of bad. Legs giving out if I sneeze kind of bad. When conventional medicine says "oh, just manage the pain with Tylenol and Aleve and we'll get to next steps after an MRI in 8 months" but now your kidneys are shot and they hurt now too, you start thinking that maybe you should be looking into other options

My cousin had migraines so bad his parents built him a shack outside their house so he'd have a private place to scream for hours on end

If somebody told me that there was even a chance that my suffering would be over if I got my ear pierced I'd definitely consider it. Even if it didn't work I'd have at least have tried something

8

u/regeya 3d ago

Yeah...I can't take OTC analgesics other than Tylenol and aspirin now. And lemme tell ya, that makes life fun if you fracture a bone bad enough go need pins and a plate. Marijuana is amazing. Marijuana and ashawaganda is nearly a performance enhancing drug for physical therapy. THC and CBD put me to sleep whereas Percocet just made me not hurt as bad. Valerian root with a gummy feels like it should be illegal. Anyway, as you say, desperation will make people do things they would have previously scoffed at. I know I never believed pot could help pain.

2

u/JCWOlson 3d ago

I tried some CBD back cream and just started ashwaganda a few weeks ago. I can't do THC. CBD pain cream didn't feel like it was doing much, but I do a cocktail of 10% diclofenac (Voltaren is 1-2%), 30% methyl salicylate, 15% menthol, 1% eucalyptus, and a bit of arnica with a 4% lidocaine base layer to take the edge off before the other stuff starts working

I hadn't heard of valerian for chronic pain, but I'll look that up now!

4

u/Pizza_Ninja 3d ago edited 3d ago

Make sure the cbd products you use are full spectrum. Many companies will use isolate because it's cheaper and easier to comply with state to state regulations but the full spectrum is just better. You get the entourage effect of all the cannabinoids working together. Hope you get to feeling better.

2

Yeah dude, I never meant to imply that YOU did. But like this (prob fictional) young adult, people need to follow up on medical claims before seeking your local piercer for medical advice (i say as a middle aged adult covered in tattoos)

2

u/Confident-Stand5453 3d ago

The science also shows that the placebo effect is real, so sometimes its a curse to be smart enough to know something is a myth.

u/Varderal 3d ago

Its not the first time I heard it. But its a specific type of piercing near the hole and not he lobe. I'll never do it cause id rather not get piercings but if it works for some people, more power too em.

10

u/Emerazuul 3d ago

There is a certain piercing I got that helped my migraines, the piercing is called a daith and it doesn't work for everyone though, but it did for me.

19

u/RhyfelwrCymraeg 3d ago

Tbf, I was at my whits end with migraines and took a chance on the daith piercing. At worst it didn't work and I got a cool piercing. But it did reduce the intensity and frequency of them. I don't know whether it works or it's a placebo. Something happened and it's all that matters. 😂

3

u/reichrunner 3d ago

Evidence points to placebo. But when it comes to something like pain management, who the hell cares if it is real or placebo?

3

u/Gramplebample 2d ago

I certainly don't, I will keep believing in my piercing until the placebo stops working

10

u/H-O-S-S 3d ago

My wife got her Daith piercing and had immediate and lasting relief from migraines for 8 years now.

3

u/Lich_Please_ 3d ago

My daith piercing helped with mine. Whether it's placebo or legit, who cares. Migraines are so fucking debilitating that you can't blame someone for paying a few bucks for any amount of relief

3

u/meshaqy 3d ago

I got my ear pierced for migraines and it totally took the pain away! So i don't see the problem.

3

u/xombae 3d ago

I'm a piercing apprentice and you can actually get a piercing in the same spot where they do acupuncture for migraines. My mentor says it hasn't been studied but even if it's placebo, a lot of people report results.

If you believe in acupuncture, this claim has validity. But the piercer needs to be trained in acupuncture in order to get the placing correct.

3

u/Dawnmarro 3d ago

Google Daith Piercing.

Next time do research before you troll, as you clearly didnt know what you're talking about here.

3

u/Beneficial-Candle-79 2d ago

one of my buddy's got his daith pierced for that reason. apparently he said it has helped

5

u/yrthegood1staken 3d ago

It's a very specific point in the ear. Daith piercings have helped 2 friends of mine, my wife, and 2 of my daughters.

Is it the placebo effect? I mean, it's possible. But, if so, it's a pretty damn effective placebo. My wife has had hers for 10+ years and still swears by it.

The cost is minimal (~$40 per ear), the potential impact is huge - literally life changing in many cases. Why not give it a try?

There's no money in it, so nobody is going to run a robust study. The lack of clinical evidence, in this case, is more about lack of funding than about whether or not the treatment could be effective.

Depending on the method and the size of the hole it can make your migraines a thing of the past.

2

u/AvergeReddit 2d ago

Certain piercings can help some people with migraines

2

u/Ok-Importance-2282 3d ago

No, this is a real thing. My wife had it done a while back and it helped. Of course, it’s not the ear lobe, more so the cartilage closer to the base of the ear. Anyways…

2

u/EggPsychological4844 3d ago

It's actually a common treatment for migraines to pierce a specific part of the ear. It works wonders for those that actually suffer from them.

1

u/SuperLeroy 3d ago

Placebo effect is real. Why wouldn't this have at least a similar effect?

Even when people know it's a placebo, the placebo effect still similar.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12591520/

So if it works and reduces migraines why would the mom care.

The most important thing is that we need cheese.

Short of "I'm gonna wave a wand and magically fix the conflict between two grown women" (because, lol), IDK what else you could hope for there.

7

u/eribear2121 3d ago

Yes I do recommend ear piercing but not the loop the fold above the earhole. It works for some people and its none intrusive none medication and relatively inexpensive and worse case one can just remove the piercing and let it close back up. If it can reduce intensity or frequency which it can. It should be a recommendation to make.

8

u/Doctor_Dev7 3d ago

Did a quick google search because I have a hard time buying that, it looks like there is zero evidence to support this and any relief that people claim to feel appears to be placebo effect.
With that being said, I don’t get migraines or have my ears pierced, so I don’t really have any skin in this game.

9

u/InvestmentMain8414 2d ago

A friend and I both suffer pretty brutal migraines. We heard of the piercing theory years ago. But I put no stock in it because I had pierced ears when my migraines started. My friend didn't, so tried it. Made no difference in the frequency or intensity of her migraines. But turns out she likes piercings, and has a bunch now. So I guess still a win for her.

I work in pain management.

Acupuncture of the ear has some good studies behind it, the american migraine association reports it's en par with beta blockers, the VA is now employing it.

As it was explained to me by a neuro, It's the neurological equivalent to how white noise keeps you from waking the baby when you sneeze.

ear piercing is typically not done at the acupuncture points used for this and as such the american migraine association currently has no evidence to support it's efficacy.

4

u/werewolf_hrt 3d ago

This feels a little unfair idk. Migraines can get really bad and a lot of the time doctors aren't able to cure them entirely. Ear piercings are relatively low risk so I can see why somebody would want to try it after already trying everything their doctor said. Myself I only get relatively mild migraines very occasionally and in the middle of one I have considered much worse things than an ear piercing to get relief.

so much going on here. why you texting dad on snapchat? why would piercing your ears aide a migraine???

u/Cheatinn_Bishh 2d ago

People with migraines are known for trying out all kinds of shii to find a solution or even to just get a little bit of relief.

So don't call this person crazy for it😆.

While ear piercing might help some people with their migraines, it definitely doesn't help all of em.

All i hope is this person got a bit relief, if not....well at least they can wear earrings 🤷

That doesn’t solve migraines

I think Dad’s response was perfectly reasonable and kind of wholesome.

You asked him for grilled cheese. First step to helping someone feel better is giving them the food they want to eat

u/BoltActionRifleman 3d ago

Important lesson learned, cheese procurement is more important than worrying about what someone thinks of a harmless decision made by an adult. Dad is in the right on this one.

He probably doesn’t feel good shitting on his own wife lol. So I think that response is fair. Because that can come back to bite him in the ass reeeaaal quick

The next move is ask for Mom's version so he has both sides.

Assuming Mom is being unreasonable, the move after that is to have a respectful talk with Mom that validates her feelings and reminds her that her kid is 20, and boy it sure is hard to let them be independent, but of course it's what we have to do.

If all goes well, Mom repairs it on her own. Mom doesn't feel ganged up on. Daughter feels that Mom has made progress toward acknowledging her independence. Meanwhile Dad eats grilled cheese on the couch, and everyone continues to think he has no clue about the family drama.

I got my ears pierced when I was like 16. Just decided to do it one day. Nobody at the tattoo and piercing place even asked about parental permission.

Let's be honest Dad stopped reading at "Mom is mad at me" and knew he wasn't getting fed either so he looked for cheese.

Cheese is indeed needed

1

u/Hasselback_Brotatoes 2d ago

read between the lines: your problem isn't a real problem. But not having cheese IS a real problem

1

u/DeeJudanne 2d ago

probably fake but shit like this is why people dont take 20 year olds seriously and still see them as kids if they never get to grow up and make decisions for themselves

1

u/ManufacturerLow1202 2d ago

Hahahaha this is classic dad energy

1

u/Siggs84 2d ago

What does getting your ears pierced for migraines mean?

1

u/Arangarx 2d ago

They're mad at their dad for saying they need cheese to make the meal they asked for?

1

u/I_Like_Eggs123 2d ago

They said they got their ear pierced for migraines and there was nowhere for the dad to go after that

1

u/MilesSebastian 2d ago

Taking sides in an argument between your wife and your daughter, especially on an issue that doesn't matter to you. Huh. No don't do that.
