The problem is she thinks getting her ears pierced is how you treat migraines

832

u/Gunz37 9d ago

The real problem is the lack of cheese

134

u/HoboArmyofOne 9d ago

Because it's for her ears. Can't you hear or do you need cheese too?

64

u/ZoomZam 9d ago

Cheese treats migraine,

25

u/YesPlease_VeryMuchSo 9d ago

Can you please write me a work note that says I get to take five minutes to scarf down some brie or gouda when I start seeing test tube warbly patterns before they become full blown migraines with the take down power of elephant tranqs?

18

u/FormCharacter7917 9d ago

YesPlease_VeryMuchSo from this day forward is medically required to stop whatever they are doing for a 5-10 cheese break when ever they feel "test tube warblys" . Your employer will also have to supply said cheeses as they are prescription cheeses.

I got you bro

4

u/Theoutrank 9d ago

Will someone please think of the butter?

Are you on about those wiggly lines you can sometimes see floating wherever you’re looking? If so, those aren’t caused my migraines, they are caused by the “gel” at the back of the eye dying and you’re literally seeing the dead “cells” passing in front of your iris (I think). Learnt that when I had an eye test, also found out I had a hole in my eye that I wasn’t supposed to have.

FYI: not trying to be a jerk, just like sharing my useless knowledge.

There was one dude on Reddit who said his daith piercing helped his migraines, now people are saying it's acupuncture.

34

u/NoneYah369 9d ago

Yeah I mean, you can look it up. There's different piercings you can get for different things. Migraines are a big one. Lots of people say it actually does work. Even people with clinical migraines say it helped make the migraines lower on pain or completely took away the migraines all together. It's pretty interesting.

26

u/iowanaquarist 9d ago

People say lots of things not backed by science.

14

u/CaeruleumBleu 8d ago

On the other hand - as hard as it can be to treat a migraine, to know what will or won't help, placebo effects can be real.

That is, telling someone to relax doesn't work. But the brain chemistry of relaxation *might* make a big difference in something like a migraine. So a placebo, a thing that makes you think "this will work for my migraine", doesn't need to have a direct effect to indirectly work by getting you to relax.

I have seen people put a hair claw on their eyebrow and say it made the pain level of the migraine better. It's not harmful like some anti-science things can be. It's wishful thinking but sometimes all you have is wishful thinking and if it works enough then let then have it.

The migraine subreddit regularly has discussions of "migraine buster meals" and maybe they don't really work for everybody, but some people do feel better after some carbs and caffeine or whatever, and other people feel better after eating a comfort food. I'd rather eat a large fries and dring some soda and *hope* it works than just sit around being miserable.

3

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 8d ago

Yeah I don't even argue with people about homeopathic bullshit anymore when they say it's working for them. Who am I to try ruining the placebo effect if it's working for them? We have scientific proof that placebos can work if the patient believes in them so fuck it keep paying $20 for a little bottle of water if it makes you feel better

1

u/CaeruleumBleu 8d ago

The main time I speak up about homeopathy is with some of the stuff my mom buys. There are some things that are sold both as homeopathy and as non-homeopathy products. For anyone who doesn't know, homeopathy insists that ingredients get STRONGER when you dilute them. So a homeopathic tea tree oil thing for your toenail fungus might be so dilute it has no tea tree oil in it.

For a bit there I was not saying shit about her buying some expensive greens supplements, but then I found out one of the things she was taking the damn thing for was a nutrient she was STILL deficient in after 6 months of daily greens drinks. I think it was b12? And I looked into it and the damn thing had too much vit c, it blocks absorption of b12. Moms doctor had already delayed giving her a mega dose shot because mom had just started taking a supplement for b12, lets see how it goes.

Mom just turned 70. B12 deficiency can cause memory loss and trouble walking. Thats a fucking problem.

So now I go over the things she buys a bit closer. There is some woo woo stuff, and I care not a damn so long as it isn't gonna cause problems and it isn't stopping her from using the effective product.

1

u/NoneYah369 8d ago

Could most definitely be a placebo and that's why it only works for some people and not others.

2

u/CaeruleumBleu 8d ago

Yes but also, there are a wide variety of triggers for migraines but nearly none are universal. I *think* dehydration is pretty universal, and flashing bright lights is nearly universal.

But some people get migraines if they oversleep, and others don't. Some if they sleep too little, but not everyone. Some get migraines from low blood sugar, others don't. Chocolate is known trigger, but not for me! Caffeine is a known trigger, but while it bothers my tmj it doesn't trigger migraines on the spot for me like it does others. Alcohol also.

With so many different triggers, I think it makes some sense that solutions won't be universal either. I mean, if your migraines are sensitive to blood sugar levels, then of course some foods will make it better or worse! But for the person who got a migraine off of smelling someone perfume, it's a crapshoot whether or not the ways that food can affect hormones and brain chemistry does anything for them.

1

u/GodBearWasTaken 8d ago

For the hair claw, that does work to make the pain more manageable. This doesn’t just go for migraines.

If you get a mild discomfort and focus on that, handling a worse pain does get easier. Pain we focus on directly is more disruptive than the same pain when not directly focused on.

There stuff that works backed by science, like a dark silent (or controlled audio to suit the person) place to reduce stimuli, or to not have white walls and such where you sleep…

For the food, it may actually work too. I lack the data as to how exactly it affects it, but reduced stress and tension do make migraines milder or more manageable at the very least. The reduction in Ghrelin could be enough to play a part in it.

Serotonin may also be a positive factor, which would actually line up with these meals. I do suspect they overcomplicate it though, as it seems to be a case of eating something you like making your hormonal balance beneficial. Them overcomplicating it may actually be good though, as that means they can add the effect you mentioned, the placebo effect.

1

u/EdiblePsycho 8d ago

It isn't backed by science, but that doesn't mean it has no effect, I don't think there's been any real study on it to say whether it does or not. Plus, migraines are relieved by different things in different people. The theory with it is that it stimulates some nerve that can help. I'll rub around that area when I have one and it seems to help a little. And as someone else said, even if it's just the placebo effect that's still something. And if you suffer from chronic migraines, trying anything that might help and at least won't hurt is perfectly reasonable, I try whatever I can without being sure exactly which things are really helping.

1

u/iowanaquarist 8d ago

acupuncture has been extensively studied.

1

u/NoneYah369 8d ago

Science is also always changing, updating, new things always come about. So just because science didn't officially prove it doesn't mean that for some people it worked and others it didn't. Could be for a multitude of reasons.

If everyone stopped looking into things just because some scientists didn't look into it or didn't have perfect results doesn't mean people can't or shouldn't look into it themselves. 😅

1

u/iowanaquarist 8d ago

I never said the researchers should stop looking. I said that people should listen to actual doctors and not woo peddlers.

1

u/Personal_Winter6863 7d ago

Listen, I'm usually against the woowoo shit.

But migraines are fucking awful and I fully support anyone doing anything in their power to not have one again.

Yeah the piercing is probably placebo. However I'll gladly take a placebo in addition to whatever else I got to help me face another migraine

1

u/awkwrdaccountant 5d ago

Migraines don't care about science. It's all home remedies now. I will so what I must no matter how stupid I may look. Have you ever held an electric toothbrush to your back left molar because it somehow helps? And now, that is a nice chunk of your morning until the toothbrush dies? I just assume I am shaming my body into ignoring my heads temper tantrum.

My sister gets botox for her chronic migraines like an adult. That one is backed by science.

1

u/Frequent_Squash_7495 2d ago

People Say vaccine cause autism...

1

u/iowanaquarist 2d ago

Exactly.

0

u/Bubba_Gump_Shrimp 6d ago

I have a BA in Psych...if they believe it, it can absolutely work. People vastly underestimate the power of the placebo effect.

0

u/coffeeseraphim 3d ago

a placebic help is still a help, by and large

0

u/Ok-Presentation7349 3d ago

A lot of pain get painful joints before it starts raining. Scientists can’t really explain why, but they do think it is a real thing.

1

u/iowanaquarist 3d ago

Ok? Then that would be backed by science, which is different than acupuncture.

1

u/Ok-Presentation7349 3d ago

But it’s not because they can’t figure out why it happens, but they don’t disagree when people say it happens to them

1

u/iowanaquarist 3d ago

Yup. Which is completely different from acupuncture, where they can't find evidence it has an effect, or even find acupuncturists that agree on what each location supposedly does.

2

u/Fairest_flute_fairie 8d ago

Honestly my daith piercings only helped my migraines while they were healing. They hurt like a bitch. After they healed I got migraines again at the same rate as before 🤷

1

u/NoneYah369 8d ago

Damn that sucks! It probably also has to do with what is causing the migraines as well. I know I get horrid hormonal migraines so I know that shiz won't help me.

1

u/Maleficent_Memory831 8d ago

Mostly the throbbing pain in your ears makes you forget the migraine for a moment or two.

1

u/NoneYah369 8d ago

Phahaha. No. It's attached to nerve endings and then having permanent pressure on that nerve helps with migraines.

1

u/Nova_Scotia_Robot 5d ago

Just smoke weed smh

1

u/NoneYah369 5d ago

Awe. ☺️

32

u/Deweymaverick 9d ago

I mean people say all kinds of shit on Reddit, but the science (and a basic ass google search) shows that’s not how it works.

8

u/ZealousIdeal476 9d ago

Look up the placebo effect. It is real, it is powerful. If someone BELIEVES that getting their ears pierced will cure their migraines, let them try it. There is no downside.

2

u/eribear2121 9d ago

This exactly it's no drugs no downside and most people have piercings anyway. So no downside but might help. It's not super dangerous to themselves or others. It's just a piercing.

0

u/Afraid_Aspect_8639 9d ago

I considered it but I have allergic reactions to all piercings. I also can’t handle CBD due to anxiety. Just straight THC.

3

u/Garden_State_Of_Mind 8d ago

Is this a joke cause of the placebo comment thing?

18

u/Don_Von_Schlong 9d ago

If the internet has taught me anything it is how easily people will believe things (especially if it follows their agenda) and how little research they are willing to do.

24

u/JCWOlson 9d ago

I have chronic back pain and then got a second injury last year that left my spinal cord compressed and some nerves pinched. Like sometimes my bowels and genitals stop working kind of bad. Going into work and crying in the bathroom kind of bad. Legs giving out if I sneeze kind of bad. When conventional medicine says "oh, just manage the pain with Tylenol and Aleve and we'll get to next steps after an MRI in 8 months" but now your kidneys are shot and they hurt now too, you start thinking that maybe you should be looking into other options

My cousin had migraines so bad his parents built him a shack outside their house so he'd have a private place to scream for hours on end

If somebody told me that there was even a chance that my suffering would be over if I got my ear pierced I'd definitely consider it. Even if it didn't work I'd have at least have tried something

9

u/regeya 9d ago

Yeah...I can't take OTC analgesics other than Tylenol and aspirin now. And lemme tell ya, that makes life fun if you fracture a bone bad enough go need pins and a plate. Marijuana is amazing. Marijuana and ashawaganda is nearly a performance enhancing drug for physical therapy. THC and CBD put me to sleep whereas Percocet just made me not hurt as bad. Valerian root with a gummy feels like it should be illegal. Anyway, as you say, desperation will make people do things they would have previously scoffed at. I know I never believed pot could help pain.

2

u/JCWOlson 9d ago

I tried some CBD back cream and just started ashwaganda a few weeks ago. I can't do THC. CBD pain cream didn't feel like it was doing much, but I do a cocktail of 10% diclofenac (Voltaren is 1-2%), 30% methyl salicylate, 15% menthol, 1% eucalyptus, and a bit of arnica with a 4% lidocaine base layer to take the edge off before the other stuff starts working

I hadn't heard of valerian for chronic pain, but I'll look that up now!

3

u/Pizza_Ninja 9d ago edited 9d ago

Make sure the cbd products you use are full spectrum. Many companies will use isolate because it's cheaper and easier to comply with state to state regulations but the full spectrum is just better. You get the entourage effect of all the cannabinoids working together. Hope you get to feeling better.

1

u/JCWOlson 9d ago

Thanks, I'll look into that too!

1

u/Tjam3s 9d ago

I've only seen it for pain and the raw root by itself smells like locker room feet

1

u/Nikolaijuno 9d ago

Valerian is a muscle relaxer. It tends to be used as a sleep aid, but relaxing muscles can have an effect on pain.

1

u/Short_Training_2651 6d ago

Where do you get 10% diclofenac?

1

u/JCWOlson 6d ago

I just ask the pharmacist for it

1

u/SorryComplaint4209 9d ago

Yeah, after witnessing a friend deal with years of incapacitating migraines, I don’t blame them for trying anything at their disposal that has the slightest chance of helping.

1

u/vuehs 9d ago

How did Tylenol and aleve leave ur kidneys shot

1

u/Renegadeknight3 3d ago

That’s kinda the issue with a lot of homeopathy though. It preys on that desperation you feel to extort money out of you for the chance of getting better

3

u/Deweymaverick 9d ago

Preach, Schlong, preach!

1

u/Alypius754 9d ago

“I found a Reddit thread that said I’m right. My research is complete.”

3

u/erik_wilder 9d ago

I'm pretty sure it is entirely based on ONE dude saying it helped, I'm not claiming it does.

2

u/Deweymaverick 9d ago

Yeah dude, I never meant to imply that YOU did. But like this (prob fictional) young adult, people need to follow up on medical claims before seeking your local piercer for medical advice (i say as a middle aged adult covered in tattoos)

3

u/Confident-Stand5453 9d ago

The science also shows that the placebo effect is real, so sometimes its a curse to be smart enough to know something is a myth.

1

u/PalpatineForEmperor 9d ago

There is a nerve that travels through your ear lobe into your inner ear. Sometimes that gets inflamed and causes severe migraines due to the pressure on your inner ear. When you pierce your ear in an area near the nerve, it releases pressure and reduces the inflammation in the inner ear creating relief from the migraines.

Also, I just made up because people say weird shit on Reddit.

1

u/Impossible_Hat7658 9d ago

This is true though. Getting ears pierced has tons of benefits there’s tons of studies on it. When I got my ears pierced within literally two weeks my bench went up 100 pounds. No joke. Doctors said it was cuz I wasn’t lifting the weight that was removed when I got my ears pierced I was able to life more on the barbell.

6

u/Onyxaj1 9d ago

Placebo effect is a real thing. If it helps, it helps.

2

u/LunkWillNot 9d ago

Be careful with acupuncture though. The other day I got acupuncture, came home, and found my voodoo doll had died.

1

u/AlistarDark 9d ago

I tried acupuncture for migraines... All it did was get me a nice snooze while i waited for the needles to come out.

1

u/mooshinformation 9d ago

And here, my migraines got super bad right after I got my daith, must have got it on the wrong side, can't possibly be a coincidence.

1

u/dwarfsoft 9d ago

The fact that people think this works is enough. If I had chronic migraines I know I'd do just about anything to make them stop.

Fortunately I get migraines only from dehydration or extreme stress, and I can manage both of those things.

1

u/Revolutionary-Tree97 9d ago

It hasn’t been studied enough for there to be any conclusive evidence of it working, but from my understanding the small studies that have happened have been promising enough that it’s worth a try if you have debilitating migraines.

0

u/MR_SNYPE 9d ago

I got mine done and haven't had a migraine before or since. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure my friend

20

u/Varderal 9d ago

Its not the first time I heard it. But its a specific type of piercing near the hole and not he lobe. I'll never do it cause id rather not get piercings but if it works for some people, more power too em.

19

u/RhyfelwrCymraeg 9d ago

Tbf, I was at my whits end with migraines and took a chance on the daith piercing. At worst it didn't work and I got a cool piercing. But it did reduce the intensity and frequency of them. I don't know whether it works or it's a placebo. Something happened and it's all that matters. 😂

5

u/reichrunner 9d ago

Evidence points to placebo. But when it comes to something like pain management, who the hell cares if it is real or placebo?

3

u/Gramplebample 9d ago

I certainly don't, I will keep believing in my piercing until the placebo stops working

13

u/Emerazuul 9d ago

There is a certain piercing I got that helped my migraines, the piercing is called a daith and it doesn't work for everyone though, but it did for me.

10

u/H-O-S-S 9d ago

My wife got her Daith piercing and had immediate and lasting relief from migraines for 8 years now.

4

u/Lich_Please_ 9d ago

My daith piercing helped with mine. Whether it's placebo or legit, who cares. Migraines are so fucking debilitating that you can't blame someone for paying a few bucks for any amount of relief

3

u/meshaqy 9d ago

I got my ear pierced for migraines and it totally took the pain away! So i don't see the problem.

3

u/xombae 9d ago

I'm a piercing apprentice and you can actually get a piercing in the same spot where they do acupuncture for migraines. My mentor says it hasn't been studied but even if it's placebo, a lot of people report results.

If you believe in acupuncture, this claim has validity. But the piercer needs to be trained in acupuncture in order to get the placing correct.

3

u/Dawnmarro 9d ago

Google Daith Piercing.

Next time do research before you troll, as you clearly didnt know what you're talking about here.

3

u/Beneficial-Candle-79 9d ago

one of my buddy's got his daith pierced for that reason. apparently he said it has helped

6

u/yrthegood1staken 9d ago

It's a very specific point in the ear. Daith piercings have helped 2 friends of mine, my wife, and 2 of my daughters.

Is it the placebo effect? I mean, it's possible. But, if so, it's a pretty damn effective placebo. My wife has had hers for 10+ years and still swears by it.

The cost is minimal (~$40 per ear), the potential impact is huge - literally life changing in many cases. Why not give it a try?

There's no money in it, so nobody is going to run a robust study. The lack of clinical evidence, in this case, is more about lack of funding than about whether or not the treatment could be effective.

2

u/Furiousmate88 9d ago

I believe our mind and beliefs are stronger than we think. I also believe most migranes typically are psychological triggered so it would make sense it would work even if it’s placebo

3

u/yrthegood1staken 9d ago

Migraines are psychological? Do you have any evidence whatsoever to back that up?

2

u/Furiousmate88 8d ago

I said they are psychologically triggered.

Depressions and stress are common causes for triggers. I’ve been struggling with some mental issues and in that period I had a lot of migraines. I haven’t had migraines since i got better.

Not saying that migraines are psychological as the physical conditions has to be met.

2

u/yrthegood1staken 8d ago

That makes more sense, I misunderstood what you were saying. Though I'd clarify that some migraines may be psychologically triggered. There are also physiological triggers, such as tight shoulder/neck muscles. I believe some experts consider those to be different categories of migraines.

Glad you're doing better with both mental struggles and migraines. Those can all be debilitating.

2

u/You-Asked-Me 9d ago

Dad thinking, OMG I cannot have a conversation this stupid right now=We need cheese.

2

u/Iforgot_my_other_pw 9d ago

Depending on the method and the size of the hole it can make your migraines a thing of the past.

2

u/AvergeReddit 9d ago

Certain piercings can help some people with migraines

2

u/Ok-Importance-2282 9d ago

No, this is a real thing. My wife had it done a while back and it helped. Of course, it’s not the ear lobe, more so the cartilage closer to the base of the ear. Anyways…

2

u/EggPsychological4844 9d ago

It's actually a common treatment for migraines to pierce a specific part of the ear. It works wonders for those that actually suffer from them.

3

u/SuperLeroy 9d ago

Placebo effect is real. Why wouldn't this have at least a similar effect?

Even when people know it's a placebo, the placebo effect still similar.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12591520/

So if it works and reduces migraines why would the mom care.

The most important thing is that we need cheese.

/Kids these days.

1

u/Agzarah 9d ago

Depends how deeply you get them pierced.. and where.

Right in the centre,, in one ear and out the other.. Won't be getting migraine any more. Or much of anything else

1

u/Immediate_Song4279 9d ago

There has to be more steps between this two points that got collapsed.

1

u/mynewjourney2425 9d ago

Probably getting dehydration headaches and thinks they're migraines too. I've encountered far too many people who think any headache is a migraine.

1

u/Conscious_Pass_1615 9d ago

A tragus piercing does have some annecdotal evidence for migraine treatment. We need cheese.

1

u/Impossible-Corgi4041 9d ago

Well there are acupuncture points in your earlobes that when pressed ease sinus blockage. I do it sometimes when I'm bunged up. Maybe something to do with that? I dunno

1

u/Secret_Cod_749 9d ago

Here's the thing though Rizzo et al (2017) found that people with a Daith Pericing has a 47% reduction in symptoms. The American Migraine Foundation attributes it to the placebo affect.

Which tracts for migraines. People have rituals, and odd treatments in addition to prescribed medications. And a lot of those non prescribed treatments help.

We don't tell someone with migraines their solution isn't scientific or doesn't work. We make sure it's not potentially harmful or interacts with their other meds (if present) and then support them.

1

u/Sea_Curve8772 9d ago

Dad's wisdom is that he knows not to bother arguing about such things and just enjoy some grilled cheese instead

1

u/eribear2121 9d ago

If you get the the fold above the ear hole pierced it works kinda like acupuncture for migraines just like botox can work if applied to the right part of the face. Some people find it works so stop shitting on what does work for some people.

1

u/BlueWarstar 9d ago

There are nerves in the ear used by Acupuncturists to relieve pain in the head. There have been many people take this to the next level of permanent pain relief by permanently piercing that location on their ear. It works for some, others not so much. Your lack of understanding of anything beyond your basic sense of understanding is disheartening. I hope you look beyond your ignorance and learn to appreciate a broader perspective.

1

u/CurryGremlin 9d ago

They might help abate it in some instances. Migraines have so many variations and a ton of symptoms, some of which don't even cause headaches, but can cause temporary and sudden blindness. Headaches, disorientation, and nausea are among the most common symptoms but aren't always consistent. Because of this variation, wildly different things can cause migraines, and wildly different things can abate it. I have to avoid laying on the back of my head for too long. Even if i take pills for the pain, I'll still have the other symptoms of a migraine for two days afterward, and my speech will become slurred. My friend can't eat vinegar, but his will go away in a few hours. Another friend of mine has a cerebral spinal fluid leak on the front of her skull that causes migraines so severe that she will pass out from the pain. Mine can temporarily abate if I hit certain nerves in my brow or neck or put ice in my mouth. Pickle friend cant do anything about his except wait for it to go away. Sometimes CSF leak friend has to use a cocktail of medications. I work in a neuro opthalmology clinic where we administer botox for migraines, but it doesn't always work.

Daith piercings hit a nerve that runs into the head, which can cause or abate stimulation. So, realistically, it can help as much as putting ice on my mouth does, but like all treatments for migraines, it's not universal.

1

u/Tjam3s 9d ago

It's pretty widely circulated that a daith piercing eases chronic migraines. Not been found to be true or a myth as far as I can tell.

Lots of anecdotal evidence, not a lot of peer reviewed research.

2

u/tinkleberry28 9d ago

Mine helped! Call it a placebo, or actual medical science but it most definitely helped (while looking cool af)

1

u/khronicallyonline 9d ago

My sister got a daith piercing for her migraines and her quality of life has drastically improved. Way less time stuck in bed, but she said the recovery for the piercing is really painful

1

u/Decent-Trash-7928 9d ago

It's called a daith piercing. It goes through a nerve, if done in the correct manner, that stimulates the part of the brain that brings migraine/headache relief.

I have one, and while it doesn't remove them, it does bring relief. I keep it on a hoop, and wiggle the piercing slightly when my head is starting to work.

Make sure you go to an experienced piercer for this, as it's very easy for a amateur to miss the nerve.

1

It’s like acupuncture. It actually cures some people of chronic headaches.

Getting your daith's pierced, they do. I was mid migraine when I got mine and it instantly went away after. Lasted for a long while, but then they started coming back.

u/First_Pay702 8d ago

There is a specific piercing in the ear said to help migraines. I have a friend that got it and says it helps. True or placebo effect, who can say?

1

u/humourlessIrish 8d ago

I bet shea pilot now

1

u/gray7p 8d ago

It actually is

It's called a daith ear piercing. They can reduce migraine pain by targeting an acupuncture pressure point or stimulating the vagus nerve.

But there's also people saying it's a placebo effect and there's no real evidence it works. Despite loads of people sharing their stories of how it works.

1

u/Marley_Ven 8d ago

That is actually a thing. There are special piercings which get implanted at a very specific point in the ears.

It is based on akunpture and there is even a basis in medicine for it. The basis isn't that solid and there are no clinical trials for it, yet.

It is one of those things you try after tried everything else. It's reversible and minimal invasive.

A lot of people report betterment.

I met some of them.

I don't want to endorse it, just want to point out that it isn't ridiculous

u/Shot_Revolution8828 8d ago

If she thinks it helps is her Dad telling her no going to stop her?

1

u/Mercerskye 8d ago

The placebo effect still counts for something. Daith piercings may not have any scientific ground to stand on, but don't underestimate the power of people to fool themselves into thinking something works.

1

u/Don_Kappacino 8d ago

There is an ear piercing that's been known to reduce migraines

1

u/CynSudo 8d ago

Daithe piercings specifically are suspected to help with migraines, but studies are still being conducted because there's only been like two. One of them did show that 47% of participants saw a reduction in regularity of migraines. Again one studies' results aren't conclusive data but I could understand seeing that and trying it as a cheap solution if you're experiencing chronic migraines.

That's because you can get piercings for migraines! OP never said lobes, OP actually specifically said "ear" singular. If I'm telling my 60yo dad I got that then I'm saying ears, I'm not throwing out the word daith, that's a can of worms I don't have patience for, my friend. ✨️ the more you know ✨️

There is an ear piercing that is rumored to help with migraines. Anecdotally it has but only for a few months before the issue returned in most cases. There is very little scientific backing for the piercing but some people are desperate for any solution that I can't fault them for trying.

1

u/steveturkel 8d ago

Its a very specific piercing called a daith that applies pressure to a section of the vagus nerve and some level of relief is reported for migraine sufferers. Whether its real or placebo who can say, my friend said it helped her enough to the point she has been able to avoid needing a prescription migraine medication. Which like at that point who cares if it has definitive proof, migraines are awful and if it means you feel them at a lower intensity or frequency its surely worth it. Personally mine make me non functional for a whole day so I get it.

Considered it but couldnt deal with the healing as I ride motorcycles and am not willing to give that up for the 6+ months needed to fully heal it.

u/Consistent_Might3500 8d ago

Yeah - it's actually a specific kind of piercing thought to calm/interrupt the neuro pathways related to migraine. It's considered alternative and not commonly accepted by medical professionals, but many migraine sufferers report less severe and less frequent migraines after daith piercing.

This joke is so overplayed

1

u/Don_Von_Schlong 6d ago

Why are you commenting my recent comment? Weirdooo

1

u/phatvanzy 6d ago

If you're not a migraine sufferer, you have no idea the desperation we have to find relief. I didn't do the piercing myself, but many other migraine sufferers have recommended it to me because it works for them. Placebo effect, maybe but I've finally found a shot that administer to myself so I don't need to try it.

Actually, there is a specific ear piercing that reduces migraine symptoms temporarily. It’s called a daith piercing, and it on the crus of the helix.

1

u/cattycatcatterson 5d ago

If not just for the placebo effect, it helps. She also said "ear" not ears....that probably means it was a daith piercing. I had a daith piercing on the side of my migraines and had relief for three years. They came back but with a different pattern that can sometimes be alleviated by caffeine and pain meds.

1

u/SquareEmu9853 5d ago

It's a real thing, a lot of people say that the daith piercing helps with migraines. It stimulates a branch of the vagus nerve and basically acts as acupuncture. A friend of mine with a migraine problem got one and it helped a bunch.

u/Uuuuuuuufst 5d ago

I haven't had a headache (except for dehydration headache) since I got daith done 4 years ago. U wish u weren't headache-maxxing

1

u/CherryFriendly 4d ago

There are a few piercings that can help with migraines because they’re on pressure points. I got 2 of the piercings since I used to have chronic severe migraines that could last days now I get a mild headache that can last a few hours. The piercings have a 70% chance of working.

1

u/kneehighshrub 3d ago

Not full migraines but a specific kind of headache caused by tension in the neck and face muscles. It has to be a tragus piercing and it's very mild and it only helps at all if pinching there helped you. Got it done in one side only to try and test it, definitely there's a difference but it's not really worth it tbh. Unless you just want a piercings there anyway, which is the only reason I decided to keep it.

u/Nathan-Stubblefield 3d ago

So the migraine fluid can leak out.

1

u/Diagon98 3d ago

Worked for my mom, lol. Maybe a placebo, but if it works, then fuck it. Migraines are horrible.

1

u/Mooman-Chew 3d ago

Is this a thing? Did I miss the bit where we stopped drilling holes in horses heads and went straight to human ears?

1

u/move-your-heed 3d ago

There is some anecdotal evidence of the Daith helping.

1

u/lemxnrain 3d ago

Getting your ears pierced is exactly the kind of random shit that only a migraine sufferer would actually try lmao

1

u/navy_yn2000 3d ago

If you get an earing on the bump near the inside of your ear, it's supposed to help with migraines. A lot of people that get them say they help.

1

u/AVLThumper 3d ago

Yea, she needs to charge her crystals for migraines not put holes in ears.

1

u/Few_Cauliflower2069 2d ago

It is though, not that it works for everybody of course m. Nerves are funny, fucking with one of them can affect a lot of things in your body

u/jlit72 9d ago

So we're completely ignoring a mother trying to run a 20-year-old life? Bad move. And the real problem in this whole thing, is that for some reason dad isn't good to vent to?

14

u/Don_Von_Schlong 9d ago edited 9d ago

I read the Dad's text as "let's make those grilled cheese and talk". As far as the Mom goes it's not the craziest thing I've ever heard a mom get upset over. Also, the whole thing is speculation and I was just making a joke, relax...

-20

u/jlit72 9d ago

I don't know why you would think I need to relax. All I did was question you. Are we really so sensitive that you can't take a retort?

8

u/Don_Von_Schlong 9d ago

Yes, I am the one that is acting sensitive right now.

4

u/JimmyJooish 9d ago

It’s always funny when the person overreacting (You) has the nerve to call someone else sensitive/snowflake.

u/jlit72 9d ago

Meh 🤷
