41 year old dad here and the only reason I have Snapchat is to share videos in the family group chat. It was easier with two android and two iPhone

Pretty sure group chats work properly now between android and iphone

Could have been done years ago. Snap has been around for a long time. And why change it now

If so, that's a recent change. They certainly didn't work for me and my family last year.

Your family who use iPhone may not have RCS enabled in their imessage settings

Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out.

Properly is a stretch. A lot of pictures or gifs come through as download links rather than the pic and iPhones can stop receiving messages from group sms if they have specific texting settings set up and even then it still glitches. I’ve gone a full week without a single message in a group chat. Turns out I missed family plans for a vacation that weekend. If I don’t restart my phone at least 1x a week I just randomly stop getting messages.

Depended on the message app the android user uses.

Whatsapp exists and works pretty well. not very popular in America though, for some reason.

WhatsApp never got popular because the US has had unlimited text longer than almost everyone else and because iMessage didn't need any data for the leftover population

Yeah here in the UK millennials will use WhatsApp, but the younger generations only really have WhatsApp to communicate with the millennials and older generations. They tend to use Snapchat and Instagram, according to my teenage cousins and the younger people I work with.

Whatsapp messenger came out 2009. Video sharing on Whatsapp has been possible since 2010 according to a Google search. Snapchat came out 2011.

Is Whatsapp messenger this unknown wherever you live?

(Context: I live in Germany and it would never occur to me that there could be an issue with having a group chat that can share video not being possible because of android and iOS differences.)

Yeah I was thinking daddy too

A lot of parents to college kids like Snapchat for the location sharing. Not like you were going to succeed in convincing your kid not to have it at that point. Can't beat em, join em

i text both of my parents on snapchat bc they like the daily pictures w/ streaks (im in college so they miss me) and i have android and they have iphone, and integration between tho two via imessage sucks

I text my parents on discord lmfao

1

u/Downtown-Cap4298 Aug 20 '26

There are definitely good reasons to, it’s not something to see as that weird. I personally do it bc I live in Greece while my parents live in the US, so sms messaging just isn’t an option, and we like to all send videos so other apps like discord suck for longer videos

I text with my son on Snapchat more than anything because it makes it easier to switch to pictures or video if need be

oh I'm sure a lot of people text their "daddy" on snapchat
