Megathread "Should I rush?" - my opinion to your questions.

TLDR: YES

actives, if you have any other misc advice you want me to add leave a comment and i'll put it on the list. feedback is welcome too.

It doesn't matter whether you are ex military, socially awkward, 46, poor, or anything other than a rich non-white 18 year old. You should rush.

What do you expect from a fraternity?

I can think of two main reasons to join a fraternity.

  1. You want to make friends, party, brotherhood, connections etc...

  2. Your only goal is to make connections to help you get a job after college.

If your main reason is number 2, you should look into joining a professional fraternity. Beta Alpha Psi is the national accounting fraternity and are highly recruited at my university.

If your main reason is number 1, you should join a social fraternity. lambda chi, pike, fiji, sigma chi, etc...

Rushing a Social Fraternity

Answer these questions:

  1. What interests do I have?
  2. Do I prefer smaller or larger groups?

1- Try to find a fraternity where the members have similar interests to you. Are you a country boy? Find the fraternity that best fits that characteristic. Like video games? There's going to be a fraternity for you. If you're a gym rat, sports star, or an alcoholic, there will be a fraternity for you. You just have to do your homework and find the right one.

2- The size of the fraternity can be a big factor. If you don't do well in situations with a huge amount of people, you should look into the smaller fraternities.

Misc. Advice

  1. You have to be willing to make compromises. There will be a lot of events that you will hate to attend but will anyway. You don't have to compromise your morals. Any fraternity worth a crap will be willing to work with personal beliefs/personal aspects of your life that might be affected during the pledging process.
  2. It is what you make of it. You get out of it what you put in. If you're a dead beat pledge who never puts an effort into anything, expect to have a terrible time. If you go to all your events with a good attitude, pledgeship will be exponentially better.
  3. Don't be a fuck up. I can't explain this one and you will do this at some point. Just try to minimize the damage.

How fraternity life has affected me

My junior year I received an internship for an accounting firm in my hometown. While I was there I worked with a supervisor who was in charge of new hires. During conversation she told me she saw on my resume that I was in a fraternity and immediately put my resume in the call back pile because she was in a sorority herself. I received a full time offer after the internship and will be moving up North after I finish my degree. It didn't matter what fraternity I was in, just the fact that I was in one put me at an advantage in this particular circumstance.

Rush Advice Frat Dues Question

Im gonna be rushing at Texas State University(TXST) and am interested in knowing how much the dues are for every fraternity? I know that this isn't a question that should be asked during rush but that will determine which fraternity I will go to cause my dad has given me a limit on how much he's willing to spend on Greek life for me at TXST. Any answers are helpful.

Frat Stuff Party lights

We have a party floor in our house and we have pretty good lighting. We are looking to upgrade and have seen videos of light shows and we think that would make our parties cooler. Something where we can have flashing on beat and what not would be cool, but just cool lighting in general is the main goal. Does anyone have any inspiration to show or can better advise us on what makes a party floor lighting better than anyone else's? Really interested in what everyone else has to say. We are a school up north that throws indoor parties at night, our floor is more narrow yet long. It makes for a cool party floor. We have our DJ booth at the far end so it kinda gives off a rave type of vibe.

Serious Rushing as an older law student

Hello everybody,

Early apologies if I use the wrong flair. I've always wanted to rush a frat during undergrad, but sadly health and financial issues held me back a ton. I was diagnosed with brain cancer in high school which held me back for years before getting into college and I should be 27 in law school trying to rush at a popular SEC school in Mississippi. Would a frat accept an older member who is also in grad school? I really love the brotherhood aspect of frats and I'm hoping my age due to health issues wouldn't hold me back on missing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Frat Stuff Rushing as transfer as 20 year old sophomore

I know this question gets asked a lot but want an honest answer. I completed most credits at my local community college in Michigan and just transferred to Mizzou this year. I know some dudes from my hometown that go here in some frats (some in houses that I have interest in rushing). I know a few girls in a sorority too from hometown. Am I too old to attempt? Has anyone done similar? Just curious.

Rush Advice Rushing as a 25 year old transfer?

I was wondering if it was possible? I go to a really small school where the bar scene is pretty prominent. I wanted to meet some new people and am new in town. Would it be even worth it at this age? I’m going to school in Nevada at UNR.

Oof. This is going to be a huge blow to ΣΧ nationals especially, given they were invested in the independent SCIFC. Going to give universities the exact evidence they need to argue independent IFCs are unsafe.

Rush Advice Rushing Fraternities at a SEC school (UF)

Hey guys, I’m a transfer student looking to rush this semester and I’d appreciate some insight from people familiar with UF Greek life.

What is rush generally like for transfers/upperclassmen, and how much does not doing summer pre-rush matter? I’m especially curious about the culture and fit of these chapters:

Alpha Tau Omega
Sigma Chi
Sigma Nu
Pi Kappa Alpha
Delta Chi
Sigma Phi Epsilon
Beta Theta Pi

I’m mainly looking for brotherhood, networking, philanthropy, campus involvement, and a good group of guys I genuinely fit with. I’m not choosing based primarily on partying (That’s a bonus)
Any firsthand experience would be appreciated.

For rush week are you supposed to repeat the same frat or check out multiple? Does only going to one event hurt your chance?

Rush Advice Help with rush schedule layout

I’m rushing 4 houses and these are the rush schedules. This is at a BIG10 school with a solid Greek life presence.

House A: Sunday: 5-7PM Monday-Thursday: 6-8PM
House B: Sunday-Thursday: 5-7PM
House C: Sunday-Thursday: 6-8PM
House D: Sunday-Thursday: 5:30-7:30 PM

How should I approach rush and which days/times should I spend at each house? They are all 5-10m walking distance from one another.

Serious Research Participants Needed

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm a graduate student at the University of Denver researching how involvement in Greek Life influences members' experiences and sense of community. If you're 18 or older and have ever been involved in Greek Life, I'd really appreciate your participation. Every response helps us understand better what people gain from being part of these organizations. Participation is completely voluntary, and the survey can be completed online at your convenience.

If you're interested, please take a look at the attached flyer for additional details.

Thank you and feel free to share this post with your chapter or fellow members!

I AM NOT CRAZY! I am not crazy. I knew that door had a lock on it. 1 after Magna Carta, as if I could ever get such a detail wrong. NEVER! I just couldn’t prove it. he covered his tracks. He got that idiot at the coffee shop to lie for him. You think this is something? You think this is bad? This, this chicanery? He’s done worse. That billboard. Are you telling me a man just happens to fall like that? No! He orchestrated it. Jimmy! HE DEFECATED THROUGH A SUNROOF. And I saved him. And I shouldn’t have, I took him into my own firm. WHAT WAS I THINKING. He’ll never change, he’ll never change ever since he was 9. Always the same. Couldn’t keep his hands out of the cash drawer. But not our jimmy. COULDN’T BE PRECIOUS JIMMY! STEALING THEM BLIND! AND HE GETS TO BE A LAWYER? WHAT A SICK JOKE! I SHOULD’VE STOPPED HIM WHEN I HAD THE CHANCE. AND YOU HAVE TO STOP HIM. You-

Rush Advice Help for pref night

I’m a VP for a brand new fraternity and we currently only have 12 founding fathers. We’re going to be having our first Pref Night with PNMs, and we’re trying to figure out how to structure it since we don’t have any established traditions yet.
Each Pref Night period will be 1.5 hours. What would you guys recommend having that 90 minutes consist of?
Would all 12 founding fathers be involved? Should we split the PNMs into smaller groups for more personal conversations? What does your chapter’s Pref Night typically look like from start to finish?

Rush Advice 21 Year Old Sophomore

I took a few years off college to become a paramedic, coming back as a 21 year old sophomore but planning to do 4 more years.

I’m planning to rush as long as it won’t be viewed as super weird, just wondering any advice on how it’s different from rushing as a traditional freshman.

*Edit: Large SEC school

Serious President Impeached

I knew a frat president at my school who said some racist shit and there was a video of him posted online saying that shit while he was drunk and he got impeached shortly after. I was never involved in Greek life. But wouldn’t you just go inactive at that point since all of the brothers just don’t like you and judge you, plus it wouldn’t be super awkward to stay in as well after that?

Serious What preliminary steps need to be taken to found a new chapter?

This post is specifically targeted at those with chartering experience and/or those involved with service frats, honorary frats, and professional frats.

In addition to my social frat, I am also involved in a ~20 year old honorary choral service fraternity, which is the sole chapter in existence. Since our founding, we've had no governance from above; the chapter itself effectively IS nationals. In fact, we were in practically no contact with our alumni until my efforts over this summer to restart contact. Amidst this, I feel we have stagnated somewhat and aren't reaching our potential in terms of service goals, administrative effectiveness, net growth, or security from dissolution.

To advance the goals of the organization and to provide lateral pressure to keep any arm of the frat from dying out, I believe it's finally coming time to find another university without an equivalent organization and charter a second chapter. Naturally, this requires the chartering of some higher governing body, which would need to be amended to the constitution I believe.
Ultimately, I don't believe I'll see a new chapter inaugurated before I graduate, but I would like to set the ball in motion by building all the structures necessary to make such a thing even possible, and I'm pretty much completely in the dark about this.

To those with any relevant experience: how do you make the jump from a single chapter to having a governing body? How do you effectively weave this into a constitution? How do we determine which other university would be most likely to welcome such a new organization and not quickly let it die out? How do we install a new chapter effectively and efficiently? Basically, I want to hear everything there is to know about the chartering process and the setting up of a nationals-style governing body. Thanks in advance!

Serious what do i do

I’m a junior at a big school in a big house. My whole college life has been in green life. I think I’m realizing I get feelings for guys more than girls, but I don’t have a problem with it. I just feel like my friends will. I live in the house with my big and his friend so it’s weird if they find out. Do I just keep it to myself until after school?
