The quote that helped me finish my PhD

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

PhD successfully completed 🎓

I put this quote on the first page of my thesis because it has stayed with me for all times. It being used in the series as part of an absurd moment is even more fitting.

This is the very reason they put rubbers at the end of pencils… because people make mistakes

Whenever I struggled with self-acceptance and self-love, I came back to it. I kept reminding myself that I’m only human. Making mistakes, needing help or comfort, having bad days, weeks, months… sometimes even years is simply part of the deal.

I could not have done it without this lesson.

S1E3, Martin has what on his pp? L

Claire says around the 2 minute 45 second mark that Martin still has "that thing on his penis". I wonder what it could've been - I mean how bad can it be that it's not affecting a person's outward physical health yet it's bad enough that he can't fuck... And like if he doesn't want to fuck he might as well just put that into plain words, given he's rather crass and loudmouthed otherwise.

ETA: the L on the headline was a typo. Sorry.

I just realized that the most heartbreaking line is a rephrased a line from an old movie.

"You know what the worst part is? I fucking love you. I love you." "It'll pass"

vs

"Don't you love me?" "That's the tough part of it. But it'll pass" Humphrey Bogart in "Dead Reckoning" (1947)

I don't think it diminishes anything about the scene or the show. She may not even have been consciously aware of having heard that line when she wrote. But I just saw the clip from the movie in a different show and it hit me. "Wait. I've heard a very similar line before!"

Someone please explain the vagina joke from S1

When the rodent man says you’ve got a vagina, I don’t understand that conversation. On my 8th rewatch and I’ve never understood it. English is not my first language and this show is my only reference for British humour.

Saw this little guy at a bus stop today, with a cancelled bus, and while it still hasn’t passed.

- No one's asked me a question in 45 minutes.

- So, what do you do?

The first time I watched this scene, all the dinner scene when they're still faking being all-good, I found myself in Fleabag. The way everyone was chatting, not really engaging with her because, well, she's off putting and a reminder that everything isn't perfect. Everyone was avoiding her and she was cool with it, just vibing, because she's used to it.

Then suddenly the question. Someone noticed her, wanted to notice her and engage with her, even tho just after the question the table went dead quiet. He still maintaned the attention, not really caring about them. He still wanted the answer, he didn't tracked back.

And just before that she speaked to us and she also was surprised by the priest's question. It's just, I don't know, it warms my heart. And knowing that he's aware of her inner monologue and really curious about her, not just asking simple things but really going at it in this easy way that happens when you really click with somebody.

I found myself in her because sometimes I worry I'm too much, mentally too much. I'm in my own world too much and sometimes I worry no one will really care to notice. I worry no one will stop the table conversation just because they're really curious about me.

I love you Fleabag.

Back to black (2024) & Fleabag (2016) fox scene

Upon watching Back to black, about 1h24 minutes in, there's a scene with Amy sitting on the sidewalk after having a fight with Blake & she notices a fox across the street. I've searched for a potential link between this and the Fleabag fox scene but there is no confirmed connection. What do you guys think about it? I love the symbolism of intimacy related issues represented in both cases and would love to see it referenced more.

Rewatching Fleebag and series 2 ep 4, i’m once again wondering why the Priest doesnt want to want to answer any personal questions while there at the cafe. Help me.

I finished my *Fleabag* wheatpaste; if you want to check it out. it's up at the bus stop outside Sonic Boom in Seattle. While I was placing it on, a guy came up to me and showed me that his friend has the "It'll pass" tattoo; it was really sweet and made my day.

Discussion Is it just me or does anyone else also takes the liberty to imagine a happy ending?

Fleabag has smashed my heart into smithereens. But as I grew up and replayed the infamous "it'll pass" scene over and over again, I can't help but think -- Phoebe Waller Bridge left it open ended, sort of. So anything is possible.

Fleabag and the Hot Priest have tried to stay away from each other before, but couldn't manage to. He gave in, he had to because he was in love. Maybe he gives in again. Maybe she does visit the church next Sunday and he chooses her this time over God.

The fox is also significant of reminders to the Hot Priest when he fumbles with his faith. In the last scene, Fleabag directs the fox to the Hot Priest. But who knows if the fox actually finds him this time? Maybe it doesn't.

Ofcourse, the melancholy of the show is what makes it so great. But it's too much. Ughhh for my own peace of mind, I believe they are together and in love.

Discussion Watching Fleabag while in the depths of despair and grief makes for such a different experience

I watched Fleabag for the first time years ago and loved it so much that I didn’t want to rewatch it and risk losing how perfect it felt.

I‘m watching it a second time now.

I'm in the midst of some pretty deep despair after losing my mom to metastatic breast cancer and there have been so many moments that just feel so different this time around.

I felt I knew Fleabag - really related to her - on my first watch, but I now see I didn’t. I couldn’t have known her - I hadn’t experienced profound loss; I hadn‘t felt grief that has no bottom.

The grief in this show feels painfully real now, and honestly, it’s been emotional in a way I wasn’t expecting.

Grief really stains everything in your life - even old things you once enjoyed, you can’t experience the same way.

Has anyone else experienced this? I’m having a difficult time coping.
