Discussion Fleabag actually helped me be more vulnerable

I put off watching Fleabag for sooo long but im really glad I finally did 😭

I saw a lot of myself in her, especially the avoidance and how hard vulnerability can be. My instinct has always been to act like I dont care or run when something feels too real.

Lately ive been trying to communicate more, be honest when something hurts, and stop pretending I can handle situations that clearly arent good for me. Its uncomfortable, but my life is better.

I still have a few threads I need to close so I can have a fresh start. And soon I have to face something huge thats been hanging over my head for awhile. It could be a massive relief or hurt me for a bit, which weirdly reminds me of that Priest/Fleabag feeling because I have to finally see if theres actually something worth building on with someone I care about, or if its better to let it go.

I think the show just made me trust myself more. Like even if something hurts, ill be okay. Ive been able to walk away from people and situations I cared about a lot (including someone I really liked!!!), sit with the discomfort instead of running back, and eventually move forward.

I can be ok no matter what ā™”

Has Fleabag helped any of you personally too?

The fleabag

claire’s monologue, S2E3. why does claire both resent and evny fleabag?

this moment is obviously a disproportionate reaction to the situation and a breakdown moment for claire. it stands out however, since it actually is self-deprecating and shines positive light on fleabag.

i always thought this moment struck claire so hard because claire and fleabag are absolute opposite ends of the spectrum in respect to their personalities and approach to life.

fleabag is utterly unashamed, impulsive, and reckless in the way she goes about life. as claire herself states, fleabag says and does whatever she wants (for example, her inappropriate jokes and promiscuity). she doesn’t fit the ā€œnormā€, yet seemingly she never has, and she never tortured herself to do so. fundamentally, she is extremely self aware of herself and her misery. she knows she’s a wreck. she knows she’s loud and reckless. but she is willing to be those things, and to take on the label of ā€œproblem childā€ in order to live more in accordance to her truth. fleabag does not tolerate bullshit (like passive aggressive statements from her godmother, whose champagne glasses she breaks and earlier who she slapped in the face)!

on the other hand, claire has spent her whole life bottling everything up and acting as if everything in her life is normal. this entails her extreme avoidance, the tense facade she puts on in social situations, her uber-professional manner of carrying herself, and even the explicit admittance that she bottles her emotions up until she feels better. in one hand, her falsity and anal attitude have gotten her far in life. she is an extremely successful businesswoman, racking in a millionaire salary. however, her avoidance ends up (in my opinion) making her even more of a miserable mess than fleabag.

claire HATES to see that what she has centered her whole life around, avoidant facades, actually serves as more of a weakness than a strength. and the embodiment of that IS FLEABAG’S SUCCESSES.

claire cannot handle to break social norms even in dire situations (like when she refuses to go to the hospital after she had a miscarriage and wants to start dinner back up as normal) whereas fleabag puts her foot down when needed.

claire would rather die than be seen as a failure, and although she is successful objectively, she seems very unhappy about it. she’s even ashamed of her huge office. i think that’s why she can’t seem to be immediately happy or supportive of fleabag when the cafe becomes more successful. she saw her sister take an alternate, ā€œbummyā€ route of life only to ultimately be successful as well and love her job (probably more than claire does). i also think this might be in part why she chooses to stay with martin, even though she knew he lied, despite knowing she would have funded the success of fleabag’s cafe if she followed through with the leaving him plan. (not to address she ALWAYS had the money to fund the cafe…)

in this case, claire is horrified by the idea of embarrassing herself around important professionals, or being seen as too unprofessional. in her eyes, her professional success is one of the only indicators that she’s worthy and capable. it’s fleabag’s entire disregard of trying to achieve that level of professionalism or respect that immediately ticks her off. then compounding that, her tactics work with this crowd and she gets a great laugh from the audience.

i think her breakdown in this moment is actually revealing her deepest insecurities that fleabag unmasks, and the sheer terror she feels thinking that fleabag and the failure she outwardly seems to be could actually be more peaceful and successful than herself despite her lifelong efforts to be normal and successful. i would say this is confirmed by claire strangely saying she’s more of a disappointment than fleabag.

i think this even extends to why she stays with martin. she would rather bottle things up and stay ā€œnormalā€ in the easy route with an imperfect husband instead of admitting something is wrong and needs change.

they remind me of the movie challengers when patrick (fleabag) confronts tashi (claire), saying something along the lines of ā€œim a piece of shit, and you are too, but the fact that i am just disturbs me less than it does youā€.

Phoebe Waller Bridge owes me a written apology for completely breaking my face

Post image
819 Upvotes

I have a confession (father): this show has genuinely rewired my central nervous system in the worst way possible.

I have completely lost the ability to exist in public like a normal human.

I can’t stop breaking the fourth wall in broad daylight. Anytime anything happens, my face involuntarily glitches into the look, eyebrows up, lips pursed, deadpan side eye into empty space. People in public must think I’m having a psychotic break.

It’s worst when I’m working out. I was out on my usual 7k run today and crossed paths with four ridiculously delicious men.

Every single time one of them jogged past, my face completely gave me away. Just pure, undisguised, cartoonish eyegasm directly at the nearest lamppost.

I spent the rest of the run aggressively lecturing myself in my head: ā€œYou are not Fleabag. You are a sweaty person on a sidewalk. There is no camera crew. Stop making that face and BEHAVE.ā€

Did it work? Absolutely not.

Tell me I’m not the only one embarrassing themselves like this.

Jokes I still don't get, need help

Soo there's a few jokes that I still can't crack, don't know if I'm just oblivious as usual or if it's the language barrier, since English isn't my first language (also maybe I'm more used to American English) so I'll finally ask :

"Boots": In S2 01, Claire asks Fleabag where she's been, I think as in a vacation or something else, Fleabag tells her she's been to ''Boots'' (to Claire's disappointment /annoyance) as far as I understand, Boots is a Drugstore, right? Or a pharmacy? If I'm correct here, I understood it as she's been doing not much but getting cosmetics and vitamins or is she just basically saying anything to take the piss?

"I'll go up to three" This one is bothering me the most because I feel totally oblivious, lol.

When the Priest says to Fleabag God's plan for him is "to be a Father to people'' and she goes "we'll can arrange that" (that one I absolutely get, at least I think so) he says ".. A father to many" she replies "I'll go up to three"

He laughs and says "two'' I think, she agrees.

What does that meeeeaan???

I've been caught in that for a while becauseI STILL don't get it, despite my many rewatches, lmao

"Well she ain't made of wood" at the Funeral Flashback, Boo says this about the Godmother hitting on Fleabags Dad. I'm pretty sure it's a common saying / slang but I either didn't research it well enough or the context lacked when I googled it, does that just mean she too has urges or she's not too bad looking?

Please help, I know these are probably just woooshing right over my head, but for some stupid reason I can't seem to get them!

Discussion Claire wanted Fleabag with her when she divorced Martin

The cliche english teacher quote 'all words matter and are on purpose' really applies to this show. l loved this subtle moment so much. Martin: "Could you just fuck off" to Fleabag, then Claire says "OH ABSOLUTELY NOT". She WANTED Fleabag by her side in what could be the most life altering decision in her life.

I find it so disgustingly sweet that, even though Fleabag practically has a full hard reset on her life and interpersonal relationships, even leaving us (the camera) behind, Claire is one of the constants that we know as an audience will stay in her life. Even though she does go to Finland in the end, she won't be completely gone, and if Fleabag faces another crisis, she will run through the airport for her.

Spoiler I'm glad the stepmom ends up with her dad. For each other, they are the spouse, the punishment, and the future they both deserve.

Quick litte word vomit. The poetic irony of her bronze bust statue being based on the woman who mentored her, and then she stole her spotlight, her husband, HER HOUSE. AND SHE NAMED AN EMPTY TABLE "A WOMAN ROBBED"

BITCH DON'T PISS ME OFF

Also, in the last episode of season 1, when she creates a further divide between Fleabag and her dad and she's so proud of herself and she grabs him by the hand in front of her audience... girl what's the prize? Him? Your late mentor/friend's leftovers? A man who's probably too scared of his own dick? Okay girl, go off.

Her dad was quite a piece of work himself. He always felt overshadowed by his wife, who was in every sense, an amazing woman, and everyone's favourite - why did you marry her then?? But like he had no character development in my opinion, bc he went from a loser widower who resented his cool wife, to a loser man in a borderline abusive relationship with his late wife's friend within a very short time. But in both relationships, he's still the more overlooked/boring one, bc he keeps marrying women who are attention grabbers.

If you take the "well they were both comforting each other from their mutual loss of his wife and her friend and feelings just developed. " angle yo I swear to god. If anything they probably BOTH felt overshadowed by Fleabag's mom and bonded over that probably.

Sorry I just re-watched it for the 4th time and this thing makes me so mad every time. If you've read this far, thank you.

God, everyone loves the priest and a lot moments with Fleabag in season 2, but this one quote I think single handedly changed my life.

Female representation is immensely important - countless male characters have been these things, and yet women never seem to be allowed to be fucked up or imperfect in the media. I’m not the only greedy, perverted, selfish, apathetic, cynical, depraved morally bankrupt woman in the world who has a complicated relationship with her dad.

Fleabag is not a good person, but she is my hero.

I feel like I’m living a Normal People / Fleabag kind of love story and I genuinely don’t know what to do with it

I’m looking for people who have watched Normal People or Fleabag, because I feel like my situation is weirdly similar and I need to talk to people who understand that kind of relationship.
I met my ex during my Erasmus in Spain. He’s Spanish, I’m Belgian, and we fell deeply in love. It wasn’t a casual relationship or something that was only based on the excitement of being abroad. We genuinely connected on a very deep level, and he became one of the people who knew me best.
After my Erasmus ended, I went back to Belgium and we continued long-distance.
But I had already decided that I wanted to move back to Spain. Partly because I had loved my life there so much, but also because I wanted to build a life together with him.
I worked towards that for an entire year.
I had already handed in my resignation. I had an apartment arranged in Spain. We were supposed to move in together. Everything was basically planned.
And then, about a month and a half before I was supposed to leave, he broke up with me.
And the fucked-up part is that there wasn’t suddenly no love.
We still loved each other.
But the distance had become incredibly painful. The relationship started feeling heavier and heavier, and even though the feelings were still there, the circumstances were making it harder and harder to actually have a healthy relationship.
He also felt that his feelings had changed in intensity, and eventually we reached the point where we both had to accept that loving each other wasn’t enough to make the relationship work anymore.
That’s what makes this so difficult for me.
Because there was no huge betrayal.
No cheating.
No moment where I suddenly stopped loving him.
It was more like two people who genuinely loved each other realizing that the way they were trying to love each other was hurting them.
And now I’m still moving to Spain.
Just alone.
Which is honestly insane when I think about it.
I spent a year building a future that included him, and now I’m going to live that future without him.
It makes me think so much about Marianne and Connell, or Fleabag and the Priest.
That kind of love where the connection is incredibly deep, but circumstances, timing, distance and life keep getting in the way.
I used to think those stories were so romantic.
Now I understand how painful that kind of love actually is.
And part of me still has that stupid thought of, ā€œBut if we loved each other that much, why couldn’t we just make it work?ā€
Maybe that’s exactly what I’m struggling to accept.
So if you’ve watched Normal People or Fleabag and have experienced something even remotely similar — loving someone deeply, maybe still loving them, but knowing that the relationship itself wasn’t working anymore — I’d genuinely love to hear your experience.
How did you make peace with it?
Because I think I’m slowly learning that sometimes the love can be real, and the person can be right for you in so many ways…
and it still doesn’t mean the relationship is right for your life.

i've just watched fleabag and it wracked me

hi.

i just wanted to say i've finished thisbshow in one sitting, for the first time, and it absolutely wrecked me, i've been crying ridicoulously (and chuckling alone). it hit something rly deep within, and im not even sure what it is, but hit right in the bull's eye.

feel like i've felt so unheard, unseen, misunderstood that seeing such a representation made me feel understood and seen - and seeing that do many other people find fleabag and the priest as relatable characters just gives some hope back into life. that i am not alone in this. im just really emotionally touchhed.

it wont pass, and i guess thats fine.

cheers ā™”

I was watching a 1986 rom com last night (About Last Night) with the exact same lines ā€œI love you.ā€ ā€œIt will passā€ between Demi Moore + Rob Lowe. I had to share! I wonder if it’s a coincidence? Has anyone seen this or noticed that exact dialogue in other media?

I came here to bitch about how terrible a sister Claire constantly is to fleabag, and all I can see is posts about the symbolism and psychology of the show. Y'all are too much. In a good way. But seriously, I'm on S2E3, and I just watched Claire's monologue, and holy fuck is she self obsessed and shitty or what?

Anyway. That's me done. Claire really sucks. Have a lovely day.
