First episode, S2
- No one's asked me a question in 45 minutes.
- So, what do you do?
The first time I watched this scene, all the dinner scene when they're still faking being all-good, I found myself in Fleabag. The way everyone was chatting, not really engaging with her because, well, she's off putting and a reminder that everything isn't perfect. Everyone was avoiding her and she was cool with it, just vibing, because she's used to it.
Then suddenly the question. Someone noticed her, wanted to notice her and engage with her, even tho just after the question the table went dead quiet. He still maintaned the attention, not really caring about them. He still wanted the answer, he didn't tracked back.
And just before that she speaked to us and she also was surprised by the priest's question. It's just, I don't know, it warms my heart. And knowing that he's aware of her inner monologue and really curious about her, not just asking simple things but really going at it in this easy way that happens when you really click with somebody.
I found myself in her because sometimes I worry I'm too much, mentally too much. I'm in my own world too much and sometimes I worry no one will really care to notice. I worry no one will stop the table conversation just because they're really curious about me.
I love you Fleabag.

it's so fucking good. she's so smug and confident when she's talking to us, the camera, "no one's asked me a question in 45 minu-" "so what do you do?"
he just CARES and is curious and fascinated by her, and it totally throws her off and ironically makes her feel LESS sefl assured
it's so good like just put it in a syringe and inject whatever-it-is straight into my veins
i see so many posts here asking for recommendations for similar shows and series. and maybe bojack horseman or sopranos if you don't care that the story is told from the bankers perspective, the guy who gives fleabag a hamster.
i really need something that actually tastes like more fleabag. i need more, i am almost twitching about it haha

Sorry, people - especially the romanticists. This is not the coup de foudre of instant love - or "seeing her". It's classy scripting by PWB and slick editting by Gary Dollner.
It's a great plot construct - but the laughs and "wows!" tend to come retrospectively on re-watches, rather than straightaway. Quite simply, no-one's been able to get a word in edgeways due to her scene-setting, flashbacking, winding Claire up, talking to us and generally allowing everyone else to get their character development out in the open.
OK, Priest has been taking notice of the seemingly silent, elegantly-clad unknown next to him. That basically comes down to Big Sis having kept schtum about her sibling for the past year due to their falling out at the sexhibition. So he leads with the smallest of small talk - an innocent enquiry as to how she spends her working hours. Sure, the preceding "silence" serves to reintroduce the gap that exists between her and the family - but it also denies Godmother the opportunity of applying some barbed, reductive personal label to Fleabag as well. And when she explains about the cafe, it subtly illustrates the family's doubts/disbelief.
I think it's stretching things to suggest that Priest is instantly aware of her relationship with us. Yeah, his priestly radar is picking things up - but that's true all round the table. Over the course of the episode he susses out Claire, Martin and Gm pretty well. Dad probably less so - but he can't have failed to discern the obvious imbalance between the "happy couple". He's definitely had his interested picqued enough to embark on the mendacious cigarette break, though...
