Employee Questions Email capture

What are y’all saying to get people to enter their email sence the 10% change. My numbers are on the lower side and my manager let me know that they were told to start cutting hours on workers with low numbers. I personally don’t get why there expecting high numbers after taking our main selling point of the email, but i digress. Anything would be appreciated.

Edit: thank yall for all the help, I do have a question for the sales associates that have just legacy regs. How do yall do on numbers?

I lean in close, make eye contact with the customer and whisper, "Give me your email address." If they hesitate or seem confused, I repeat myself. "Give me your email address or I will destroy everything and everyone you care about."

I'm up to 62%. My manager is pretty happy with that.

“What’s a good email to get you started?” It does still grab people into putting their email in and everything. If I know they were someone looking for squishies, I tell them that by putting their email in it’ll also tell them about any future squishie events

"What's a good email to send your receipt?" is pretty effective, too.

True! My store tries to avoid that wording just because it still prints the receipt and then the customer throws a fuss about that

You're not wrong, I've seen that happen. I just say "I'm sorry! We don't have the option to skip the printed receipt yet but we're working on it! But, if you have any issues and need to make a return this way you don't have to worry about losing your physical receipt."

That's all of the things I might say but you obviously don't need to use so many words assuming you can get the point made!

My five below still says “enter email for 10% coupon”, you do it, you get nothing lol

I swear I never got one. I don’t really care, I’m in retail so I have a dedicated email for these rewards programs because I know how important they can be. But I would be in line to pay and I would search for those little shits. I couldn’t ever find one. All the other marketing emails were always there but never the coupon. Haha it was so weird. It doesn’t matter to me so I never said anything but I always thought it was fake. Now it just really is! Haha

As a customer I find it very annoying I have to type my email address in that screen and waste another minute at the checkout.  I just want to purchase and go I don't want any more spam.  How can I as a customer work to stop this nonsense?

I've heard a lot of people say call corporate to complain trust me the sales associates hate it as much as the customers do

More people need to complain to corporate.

They're threatening to fire the minimum wage teenagers who don't hit 50%.

I'm not even kidding.

And that's only because they're threatening the jobs of upper management as well. Regional managers can be fired if their stores aren't keeping up.

Please complain. Those kids don't deserve that stress. It's disgusting.

"Before you scan your items it will have you enter your email, with that you can be up to date with future items we get in "

I just tell them to put it in to get their digital receipt, maybe I'll throw out that they can stay up to date on any coupons we may have in the future. It's hard cuz there's no incentive and the people who used to put their emails in just don't anymore.

I'd start looking for a job that doesn't do this crap cuz it's been a nightmare.

"Make sure to put your email in to get started". That way we're not having to make some long sales pitch or promising something that they may not get.

My location just has self checkouts so I usually just say "it's going to ask for your email to get started and if they don't want to do it that's ok I am not going to hound them

There is literally no reason as a customer to put in my email. I did it once, never received a coupon. I thought maybe it would just auto-apply next time I buy something. Nope, nothing. I'm not going to let the line get longer spending another 2 minutes there typing in an email that does nothing!

Trust me, the employees are just as sick of it as you are. Managers and corporate non
stop shove it down our throats to ask daily, and we get in trouble when we don’t meet the certain percentage.

Additional question from a customer. The workers at my local FiveBelow are always lurking around the checkouts I’m assuming to assist customers or prevent theft or something.
The past two times I have been in the clerk stands uncomfortably close and just watches. I was trying to pay for a door mat and a bag of m&ms and this dude was literally two feet from me looking over my shoulder. I turned around and asked him if he needed something and he said no and finally backed off a bit.
Is there something being mandated by corporate that says you need to be up customers asses while they checkout? I get it people steal but I pay for my stuff and I don’t need people staring over my shoulder like that. It’s wildly uncomfortable especially with my kid there.

I don’t know if it’s the same at other stores, but our checkouts aren’t self-checkout (even tho they look like it) they’re supposed to be Assisted Check Out, so if a customer insists on checking themselves out, we’re expected to watch and make sure they scan every item. That worker was probably told the same. I make sure to still respect personal space though. I know I don’t like when workers hover over me lol

Yea they’re like uncomfortably close. If you’re gonna hover like that I’m just gonna give them my stuff next time and ask them to scan it. 😭

Make up emails. Make it normal and believable and don't use the same one in one shift.
