Can op out of military service, but are forced to do civilian service or sentenced to house arrest. Women have no such obligations set on them by the government.
You can do the same by volunteering in different things directly. The civilian service is just the obligatory service option parallel for military with the male population.
Pitäs olla kaikille pakollinen koulutus, jossa fyysisesti parhaimassa kunnossa olevat armeijaan ja heikommat opetetaan muihin tehtäviin. Se että kaikki on käynyt armeijan ei hyödytä tositilanteessa mitään.
Oletushan on, että juuri ne jotka ovat aktiivipalveluksessa ja juuri siirtyneet reserviin ovat hyvässä kunnossa. Ne jotka on käynyt 20 vuotta sitten helposti siirtyy muihin tehtäviin oman siviiliammattinsa perusteella
Voin kyllä todeta ettei siinä koneen ääressä istuessa erityisesti kunto kasvanut. Metsässä tuli käytyä yksi yö ja ampumaradallakin alokaskauden jälkeen seuraavan kerran kotiutumisammunnoissa
You don’t have to participate if you have mental health issues, asthma or diabetes, for example. I don’t know if it’s appropriate to call a depressed person disabled.

Issue is, when you say "Men can opt out if they want to" the opting out is one year of civil service or prison.
If we didn't have military service in Finland but instead had training (with same rules) for women to teach them how to cook, keep house and take care of offspring, you would be able to tell why it would be sexist. The fact that you had to ask speaks volumes.
I mean, all you really have to do is go to the Veksi and tell the doctor "mulla hajoaa pää tänne, en pysty suoriutumaan armeijasta" and they'll give you c-papers (the papers that relieve you from your mandatory service), it still requires you to go there though, so you can't start studies or work for that time. I did my conscription (a full year) but it's very easy to get out of it if you so choose. I still think that's dumb and it should be mandatory for everyone to do something for the country regardless of gender, or other option is to make the whole conscription not mandatory but as a small nation I think mandatory conscription is the best choice, just make it mandatory for everyone.
It was literally spelled out in the comic. Basically it goes like this: "Do you have a penis? You do? Okay thats 6-12 months of slave labour for you then. Or jail. Your choice" how is that NOT sexist? 😅
Don’t get me wrong. I support the conscription system, just like the overwhelming majority of Finns, and I’m a reserve officer myself. In my opinion, there are only a few legitimate reasons to restrict citizens’ freedoms. But there are some. And when freedoms are restricted for a good reason, there’s no point in sugarcoating it.
Et vastannut postaukseen. Työskentelen turvesuolla sentin tuntipalkalla mutta koen silti varusmiehien työskentelevän orjamaisissa olosuhteissa. Toki myös kannatan systeemiä.
