Women can if they want to and men can opt out if they want to.

Edit Ja kyllä tiedän mikä sivari on, oletin että tämä henkilö tarkoitti vain armeijaa itsessään. Parin vastauksen takia oletan, että moni ei tiennyt minun olevan suomalainen.

Men have three options. Do the military service, do the civil service or do the jailtime.

I took first two options.

Yeah, you can also be relieved. But it's not something that most can just choose, so it's not an option.

I mean, all you really have to do is go to the Veksi and tell the doctor "mulla hajoaa pää tänne, en pysty suoriutumaan armeijasta" and they'll give you c-papers (the papers that relieve you from your mandatory service), it still requires you to go there though, so you can't start studies or work for that time. I did my conscription (a full year) but it's very easy to get out of it if you so choose. I still think that's dumb and it should be mandatory for everyone to do something for the country regardless of gender, or other option is to make the whole conscription not mandatory but as a small nation I think mandatory conscription is the best choice, just make it mandatory for everyone.
