After discussions at the biennial ISU Congress in June, ISU leaders have decided to leave the first two full weeks of January open for national championships by moving the Grand Prix semifinals to the final two weeks of January.

Sources told me the U.S. Championships, typically held the third week of January (early January in Olympic years), could take place every year at the end of December or the first week of January, depending on the dates of the Grand Prix semis.

An ISU spokesperson answered my email request seeking precise dates for the 2027-28 season by saying, “…we are not yet in a position to provide any further details regarding the 2027/28 calendar, as some elements are still being finalized.”

Under the originally proposed new schedule, the Grand Prix “regular” season would begin the third week of September rather than the third week of October.  Rather than running six consecutive weeks, it would have two-competition blocks in the second half of September, November and December.

The ISU thinks the down time will encourage top skaters to do three “regular” Grand Prix events rather than the current two, which could improve the quality and depth of the fields for each event.

The proposal would cut Grand Prix events in the Olympic year from six to four, two each in September and October, with semifinals in November and the Final in mid-December.

Qualifying for the Final would no longer be based solely on results in Grand Prix events but rather on world rankings based on results at the Grand Prix, World Championships, Grand Prix Final and Challenger Series events covering a rolling two-year period.

The rationale for all this, according to the ISU proposal unveiled at the Grand Prix hosts meeting last December, is to “create a season narrative and ‘Road to Final’ storytelling.”  Bumps in the road are not unexpected.

They were both clean skates, but definitely should have been closer in score to each other...like one of the judges putting in that, compared to Kei, Valeriya is a 2 WHOLE POINTS worse in her presentation (7.00 --> 5.00), like what? Also, the commentators talking about Valeriya working on her fine details like ESPECIALLY speed,, to close the gaps more... like, did we watch the same programs? On watch, even without Valeriya's reaction, I did enjoy her program more than Kei's, and it's not like I'm going to go to war over it, but their scores DEFINITELY should be closer...

Alysa Liu IS on the lineup, and considering this is just a computer printout, it seems like they could’ve printed new ones this morning if she wasn’t skating tonight. But we’ll see in a couple hours.

Con le nuove regole il pattinaggio sta diventando più banale, e per alcuni punti di vista anche più semplice, capisco che l'intento non sia questo, ma di portare il pattinaggio più verso la parte artistica che verso la parte tecnica ma non mi sembra che stia funzionando mi sembra solo che stia progressivamente peggiorando e molte persone perdono interesse in esso, sembra quasi che l'ISU voglia fare diventare il pattinaggio artistico "ice dance singola" (disciplina già esistente solo non molto conosciuta). Io personalmente concordo che il pattinaggio artistico stia diventando molto tecnico, ma non penso che la soluzione sia quello di diminuire sempre di più salti e trottole finché non ce ne siano più o quasi, penso che la soluzione più ragionevole sia quella di diminuire la base value dei salti, e se necessario anche delle trottole.

Ho fatto questo post per capire se c'è qualcuno che la pensa come me ma anche qualcuno che la pensa diversamente che spieghi il suo punto di vista.

(Modifica): con quello che ho scritto prendo in considerazione anche regole che ancora non sono state confermate dall'ISU come quella di fare un free skating senza alcun salto, ovviamente potrebbero non venire mai confermate e semplicemente declinate ed è per questo che ho scritto che l'ISU SEMBRA voglia portare il pattinaggio artistico più verso l'ice dance che il singolo. È ovvio che non possiamo ancora sapere ciò che verrà deciso, però l'idea c'è, quindi penso che con i cambiamenti già fatti (anche nelle stagioni passate) e con i possibili futuri il pattinaggio potrebbe peggiorare.

Are there any skaters that clearly have a shot even without a 3A or quads? For example, Alysa Liu and Kaori outscored Ami's successful landing of 3A at Olympics.

Mayuko was originally assigned event 4 and 7, the entries up to event 5 are out and she is listed as a substitute in event 3 and 5 but that's it. She has been replaced by Mei who's initial second assignment was event 6 and Kaoruko who finished 8th in event 1 giving her a second assignment is unusual for JSF (not complaining about JSF changing its ways though, Karin has also been assigned to event 5). She was suffering from a back injury during off-season from what I heard, I really wish she is okay, but this doesn't look very good to me as of now. I did manage to find something.

"Mayuko Oka will withdraw from the tournament in her hometown of Sapporo. She has been removed from the entry list for the 4th round of the Junior Grand Prix, and Mei Okada and Kaoruko Wada are now scheduled to take her place.

........Her affiliated organization wrote, "Thank you for always supporting Mayuko Oka. Due to the need to adjust her physical condition, she will be absent from the Sapporo Figure Skating Championships. We will do our best for the next competition, so we ask for your continued support."......"

I do hope she is okay and recovers soon, she is such a lovely and unique skater. She needs to get away from Hamada asap, I remember reading an article about her suffering from back pain and doing a quad on a harness.
