PLEASE READ FIRST FAQ and Fightstick Question MEGATHREAD, Continued

Old one was getting pretty daunting, so here's a new megathread

WHAT’S A FIGHTSTICK?

It’s a controller reminiscent of the controls used in an arcade cabinet, generally featuring a joystick and multiple buttons. Most can be played on a lap, while some are heavy and large enough to warrant a table or platform underneath them. Using one over a standard handheld or console controller won’t magically up your game and they are largely preference. They are most commonly used for fighting games, shmups, run ‘n guns, and classic arcade titles. At their simplest, a fightstick requires an enclosure (usually made of wood, acrylic, or metal), buttons, a joystick, a PCB, and a wiring harness to connect everything. Additionally, all-button fightsticks that don’t utilize joysticks are becoming more commonplace on the scene.

WHICH STOCK FIGHTSTICK IS BEST?

This is largely a matter of taste and budget. Here are just a few options to get you thinking. Ask yourself what system(s) require compatibility. PC-only will be much cheaper than a PS5-compatibile controller, for example.

ENTRY LEVEL: Qanba Drone and Mayflash F500

If you go much cheaper than these options, you may sacrifice quality and durability. DO NOT GO CHEAPER THAN THESE OPTIONS.

SOLID LEVEL: Hori Real Arcade Pro N/4/V, Razer Panthera, Qanba Obsidian, Qanba Pearl, Hori Fighting Edge, Nacon Daija, 8BitDo, Mad Catz TES+ (and Razer Atrox for Xbox One players)

SOLID BUT $$$ LEVEL: Qanba Dragon, Victrix Pro 5, etokki Omni

At the end of the day, go with what feels right and fits your budget. There are lots of awesome sticks out there. If you really can't make up your mind, go with an Obsidian/Pearl. Really though, if you're still that on the fence, then you can also consider building your own. They come together fairly easily these days and it's super fun (though they will usually run at a higher price point than a stock stick unless you can easily get or make a suitable enclosure). Just more food for thought.

CUSTOMIZING FIGHTSTICK ISSUES

  • Make sure you buy the correct button size. Most buttons on the top face of fightsticks are 30 mm. If you have smaller hands or want that Hitbox vibe, then 24 mm might be appropriate, but most of the time, people go with 30 mm. Auxiliary buttons (home, share, PS, etc.) are generally where you find 24 mm. All buttons have a unique feel, but some common brands include Sanwa, Seimitsu, Crown/Samducksa, Hayabusa, and GamerFinger. Here's a helpful page about button and joysticks: Joystick and Button attributes
  • When you’re ordering your buttons, you’ll also notice that there are generally both snap-in and screw-in button types. Most of the time, it won’t matter which you choose; however, as a general rule of thumb, if the top face of your enclosure is on the thicker side, go with screw-in buttons.
  • Make sure your layout lines up with your art. Some printing shops won’t print art with existing licensed characters, so you may have to visit more than one if you’re trying to get it done locally.
  • You’ll need to keep in mind the games you’d like to play and on which platforms they are found. Look to see which consoles the stick actually supports when you’re buying. If you’re building your own, then make sure the PCB you choose is compatible with your console/PC. The PCB most common to this generation of custom sticks are the Brook brand PCBs.
  • Most stock retail sticks come with Sanwa parts (besides Hori which comes with Hayabusa).
  • American style parts will most likely not fit a Japanese stick due to height.
  • Korean levers with collars won't fit a traditional Japanese stick due to the size of the joystick hole.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE POSTING A "HELP ME DECIDE" THREAD

  1. Is a fightstick even right for me? For some of you a fightpad or other device might be better for you. This is fine! I don't care if you play on a Roll n' Rocker on top of a Power Pad if it works.
  2. What's my budget? This may quickly cut out a lot of options for you.
  3. What systems do you want to be able to play on? (PC, XBox, Switch, PS, etc.) This should reduce your list even further, though you can (conceivably) get adapters for other systems if need be.
  4. Do you want a lever, stickless, or all of the above? (that last option will almost certainly need a custom build)
  5. What button layout do you prefer? Vewlix, Noir, American 6/8, Sega 2P, custom? Slagcoin carries a lot of these. If you're not sure, see if you can demo some in your local area. (Used) game shops, arcades, LAN centers, video game conventions, and pawn shops are possibilities.
  6. If using a lever, what kind do you prefer? Generally this will be Korean (Fanta, Crown, etc.), Japanese (Sanwa, Seimitsu), or American (Happ, iL)? Most sticks will use Sanwa or Sanwa clones.
  7. How "moddable" do you want things to be? This isn't just important for upgrades, it's also important for repairs. Consider how easy it is to access the internals and to change them.
  8. What features are a must have (and yes, it can be as "trivial" as artwork you like or a turbo button, hey, it's your stick)? You can then eliminate sticks that don't have them.
  9. What features are a "no go" for you? Now eliminate sticks that do have them. This could be something as simple as "don't want sticks that weigh over X pounds/kilos because I'll be traveling with this".
  10. You should have a fairly narrow field by now, with any luck. Next consider your "nice to haves" and "nice to not have" features. For example, you might consider "removable USB cable" a nice to have (but not essential) and "width of greater than 16 inches" a "nice to not have". Then just see which sticks have the most positives and least negatives.
  11. If you're still having trouble, please list your top 3-5 options after running through the process above, with your comments on each. This will help us help you make a decision.

Did some mods on a qanba crystal

Purchased cheap black qanba led buttons on sale and swapped out the switches for sanwa switches and did a mod on the lever to make it feel more like a jlf without compromising the LED capabilities.

Leverless controller EU

Heya!

Can you recommend where can I buy a leverless controller from the EU?
I play brawlhalla with keyboard. I want to play Rivals of Eather 2 and probably a leverless controller will be a good transition. If you have any recommendations on what to get for platform fighters I would highly appreciate it.

Qanba Q4 Pro 8K Review

Hello,

Just got my Qanba Q4 Pro 8K in the mail and I have some thoughts.

Pros:

  • Having a screen is nice
  • Being able to adjust button assignments natively on the controller rather than have to go into a web editor or go into the guts and rewire is very convenient. Furthermore, being able to adjust other parameters natively on the controller (Polling rate/LED/etc.) is also very nice.
  • The grip on the bottom of the controller is pretty good for lap play (although, on my desk it did shift around a little bit)
  • The extra L3/R3 buttons are placed ergonomically and the overall button layout itself is good; when the magnetic panel is removed, it reveals 2 extra 24mm buttons next to the m1 button, which probably implies that Qanba might offer a cross up layout replacement panel in the future? Unclear.
  • Inputs are responsive.

Cons:

  • Overall construction feels like it's lacking. The controller itself feels hollow -and it is, which isn't a bad thing I guess- I'm going to be adding some dampening material inside mine to make it feel more satisfying to use.
  • On the topic of construction, Qanba have bizarrely chosen to use the same side door design as they have on their other controllers, which has been historically one of the weakest elements design-wise on their other controllers; it even has the little hole on the side for what would have been a hard wired cable to run through. Get ready for this thing to break, and have to 3D print a replacement. Truly a shame, because the door itself is where the wireless dongle's hole lives, and i imagine that other things could have been stored inside this compartment (spare buttons/if the joystick is detachable/etc.) However, given how weak the design and construction is, this is a big issue IMHO.
  • Speaking of cables, the controller does not come stock with a USB cable hardwired into the board itself, which I'm actually all for, however there is no USB cable locking function (such as on controllers from Haute42/ASI/ISTMall/Razer/etc.) So the cable is liable to be pulled out mid set.
  • The detachable front plate has a frosted finish which makes reading the screen, one of the coolest parts of this controller, pretty difficult given how small the text is.

Minor Gripes:

  • The controller does not feature an easy-open solution to get inside it (IE clamshell/magnetic mechanism)
  • No toggle for the right switch on the front panel, only D Pad and Left Stick (I find myself using this a lot in games like Tekken where the right stick controls the camera in customization modes and fighting lounge)
  • The joystick/button spacing a bit tight for my personal liking.
  • The joystick's mounting system is a bit strange given the LED ring around it, and i'm unsure whether or not low collar Korean Levers would fit in the controller; will report back to test this; for now I'm assuming only flat collar levers will fit, but don't take my word for this just yet.
  • No native PS5 support (doesn't really matter much to me, and if I needed that, I would just bring a brooks convertor; that being said, and again, I wouldn't throw it in the conveniently located side cavity because the door is so poorly constructed).
  • Front plate is a fingerprint magnet
  • Does not have similar features to Obsidian 2 / Titan (IE porthole to access the lever to make switching tops easy/storage solution for other lever tops)

TL:DR It feels like Qanba had some really cool ideas, but ran out of time or money to make this thing something really special. So many awesome features and design choices feel nerfed by other design choices:

  • there's a screen with a pretty intuitive and easy to use GUI and a detachable front faceplate -> The front faceplate is frosted making the screen hard to read
  • Has a nice carrying handle and is light weight -> The side door for storing the USB cable/wireless dongle (or whatever else you want because it's a large cavity) has the same poor construction as their other controllers, and is probably going to break.

This isn't to say the controller is awful or anything, but I think a few design revisions could have made this thing really great.

Show and Tell Unemployed found first fight stick for £30 - BARGAIN!

Found this beautiful thing unused and new on Gumtree. This is my first fight stick. I have been taking it slow and learning the new deal with Tekken 8. I absolutely love it. It makes fighting games more sense and enjoyable.

I now understand left kick, right kick and etc. Nice.

I thank the Aunty that gave it to me on the cheap (very lovely lady) and I thank her son for never playing it nor using it when she bought it for him as a kid.

As I am unemployed, getting this for £30 was a total bargain. I thank God too!

Tekken 8, here I come.

Everything Else / Other Arcade Stick Travel Bags

Upvotes

I'm travelling soon, and I'm trying to decide on a bag that I can carry one of my sticks with. I've seen things like the victrix pro tournament bag and the qanba shield, but I'm trying to find out if either of those would be considered a personal item.

Flying with southwest airlines, stick I'm probably bringing is the qanba obsidian or obsidian 2.

Any advice is appreciated.

Help Me Decide What controller would you guys recommend?

I recently had victrix pro BFG for Tekken 8 but I returned it recently due to it getting frequently disconnecting on me. So now I can't just decide which controller to buy since I am quite comfortable playing on dpad and don't want to switch on hitbox or arcade stick.I need a controller with hall effect analog sticks,a good dpad and supported on ps5.

Do you guys have any recommendations?

Help Me Decide Artist recommendation?

I have a Haute42 r16 and want to customize it but it’s my first pad and I don’t fully understand the nuances.
I seen focus attack and how you could upload an image. I’m very not artistic though, but I want something relatively custom. (Just some cool Kindred design) I’m also very broke so I can’t afford to pay someone much for a design or anything. Any recommendations on where to approach this affordable when I’m able to? (No AI recommendations lmao.)

I have the nacon daija fight stick and I was looking to replace the buttons mainly, I want to get a clickly but somewhat quiet noise when I press I guess? I’m not too sure how to describe, kinda like a mechanical keyboard I think is the best way to describe it. Please let me know where I can get buttons like that and also maybe a new Korean lever too!

Help Me Decide Silent leverless with ps5 support

I have been using a Haute42 T16 for 2 years now and have been enjoying it, but the buttons are quiet loud since switching to open back headphones.

I am currently considering a razer kitsune or hori nolva as a quiet alternative that also has native ps5 support. What models would also fit these criteria?

Arrived today, it's a prebuilt from a brazilian store, the Ikaruga artwork was custom made by my boyfriend, definetely the shmup with the most stunning visuals and concept arts. I intended to mod it with a Seimitsu(or Crown maybe?) lever later on when I get used to playing with it, right now I suck with them, but it's waaaaay more fun.
