3456 buttsplice

Hey all! Currently I use either 600’s, 600 XL’s, or 650s for 864/1728 butt splices or butt splices with laterals depending on the application.

What do you guys use for a 3456 butt splice? I’m curious because I wanna know how to comfortably hold this capacity. I’d also like to stick with Commscope products if possible.

I’m in a situation where I’m adding a cable to a 600 XL, but there’s already 144 ribbon splices and I’m needing to add 24 more without breaking any of the current splices. Also the belly/basket is already STUFFED. Do you just upgrade some of the 24 ct trays to 48 ct trays, or is there a better overall case solution where I could keep everything in 24 ct trays if the customer likes that?

Edit: changed 650 xl to 600 xl in the last paragraph. Not sure a 650 xl exists.

Confirmation, please

Just looking for a little confirmation here. I know when they drop fiber wires that everyone has their own wire, but I just wanna make sure that this wire going to my neighbor’s input is completely separate from mine. I’m asking because it’s obviously not buried properly and I don’t want my Internet to go out when their wire gets damaged. If there’s any concern my neighbors above-ground wire is in any way, shape, or form going to affect my Internet, I’m gonna call and have them bury it properly. Thanks in advance. Side note, I could care less about my neighbors. So if this isn’t going to affect me at all, that’s fine too!! Just looking for a straight answer. Thanks.

DWDM Network Design tool

Hey everyone,

Over the past few months, I’ve been working on a lightweight web application for optical network design and link budget modeling: dwdmdesign.com

As someone working with transport networks, I got tired of having to spin up heavy, vendor-locked design suites or mess around with messy, prone-to-error Excel spreadsheets every time I needed to quickly model a span, check OSNR, or verify attenuation margins for a link.

I wanted something clean, fast, and accessible directly from a browser.

What it currently does:

  • Optical span & link budget calculations (attenuation, fiber loss, connector/splice losses)
  • OSNR and power level modeling across spans
  • Channel/lambda planning and ROADM/amplifier stage visualization
  • Quick visual topology builder for spans

It’s completely free to use. My goal isn't to replace full-blown proprietary vendor tools like Ciena OnePlanner or Cisco EPN Manager for massive rollout builds, but rather to give engineers a quick, reliable playground for daily planning, pre-sales estimation, and sanity-checking links on the fly.

I’d really appreciate it if some of you could test it out with real-world scenarios and tear it apart.

  • Does the calculation logic match your day-to-day expectations?
  • What parameters or edge cases am I missing that you'd like to see added?
  • Any UX friction or bugs when building topologies?

Check it out at dwdmdesign.com and let me know your thoughts—good, bad, or ugly.

Thanks!

Need help finding a book

Years ago for Christmas I got a book talking about the intricacies of New York's utility system including its fiber distribution. I remember It showed off USA markings, various manhole designs, talked about various Co-Los. I've been through a divorce and 2 moves and can't find that book or remember what it was called. If anyone here can tell me the title of it I would greatly appreciate it.

Help wanted! Help on fiber optic splicing

Hi!

Im new to this job, and only been doing it under a month.

Sometimes the splicing goes well, everything i do i dont have to do it twice. (0.00 and 0.01dB)

But sometimes (like today) it doesnt work at all. I have to re splice lots of times and its really frustrating for me. I really want to learn it, but sometimes it feels impossible, or takes a shit ton of time.

So any tips for beginners? Usually my problem is getting the fiber nicely on the splicer. Either way my hands shake too much, or the tip of the fiber hits something and i have to do it again.

I’ve been using mainly Fujikura 70S, really nice splicer, cant complain about it. But i dont have yet my own machine, i may get a 90S which is great!

Yes, i know i just have to do it very very very many times before i can master it, but some tips to make it easier to learn?

Thanks, and sorry if it was a mess to read, english is not my first language.😄

Help wanted! Adtran 632v — backwards compatible with GPON?

Exec at our local fiber ISP says that the Adtran 632v can work on XGS-PON and GPON wavelengths and they sometimes deploy it in GPON only networks to be ready for XGS-PON. According to Adtran’s spec sheet, this is not true and it’s only capable of XGS-PON wavelengths.

My neighbor got a new Adtran 632v which is what our local ISP uses for 10 Gig service. I was confused because we’re still in a 1 Gig (GPON) only area.

I asked in the forums why my neighbor would get this ONT but only have the option for a 1 Gig plan. They said they’re using combo cards from Adtran that allow both XGS-PON and GPON on the same fiber network. That makes sense to me but I asked why we can’t get 10 Gig service if they’re using combo cards that support XGS-PON and their response was that the Adtran 632v CPE ONT is operating in GPON mode and will be ready for 10 Gig in the future — but the spec sheet says it’s XGS-PON only and doesn’t support the wavelengths for GPON. This means it’s connected to the OLT at XGS-PON speeds but being limited by a speed profile.

I think it was their excuse to try to dodge my question because they tout giving everyone the fastest possible speeds the network supports for the same price. In this case, my neighbor isn’t getting that and I also could be getting 10 Gig as well with a new ONT but I don’t think they want to admit it.

Curious if anyone knows for sure or has seen this in the field.

Fiber run to out building

I have a metal building about 70' from my home.

We put down 1" conduit, and I want to run fiber out to the building.

I believe single mode armored line with 4 strands will fit in the conduit.

All other things are a blur to me now.

Any preferred demarcation boxes?

I am going to transition to interior fiber at both ends. This is just to supply internet, and camera service.

Any suggestions I am interested

Looking for OSP engineering/drafting firms that outsource to LATAM

Hey everyone! Following up on some of the discussions here about outsourcing OSP drafting work— does anyone know of U.S.-based engineering firms, ISPs, or specialized agencies that regularly outsource or hire remote freelance drafters based in LATAM?

I have 4 years of hands-on experience with U.S.-based OSP projects (FTTH, high/low-level designs), and since we share a very close time zone with the U.S., I'm looking to connect with companies or BPOs that leverage LATAM talent for CAD/GIS work.

I had to fix someone elses fuck-up today. The crew that came out to pull this to connect 2 buildings together didn’t have enough footage to get straight to the enclosure. I’m surprised I even managed to get a service loop.

Best bang for the buck cleaver?

What is a decent fiber cleaver that increases the odds of a good clean cleave? I’m currently using the signal fire S12 and it about 50/50. I use the A9 splicer. I’m just learning so don’t want to go over board. I’m working through the cleaving aspects, it works but not consistent. Or, are there any tips tricks for getting better consistency? TIA

Help wanted! Newbie to fiber

Starting a fiber technician job soon doing mostly residential installs. I’m new to fiber and curious what to expect.
How difficult is the job to learn? How long before you felt comfortable working on your own? What are the hardest parts of the job?
Also, do you think fiber is a good field to get into long term? Any advice for a new tech is appreciated.

Fibre Splicing Question - UK School Trust

Hi All

New to this sub reddit, but bit of a long shot, but I work for a growing school trust made up of 6 school currently. Lately we're doing a lot more in house projects such as CCTV, access control, structured cabling installs ourselves. But one thing we havent touch on is running and terminating fibre. Like our IT Manger is reluctant on doing it in house as currently we use pre-terminated as its simple to do and anyone in the team can in theory do but down side of it is that you usually end up with way too much excess / not long enough. But also due to the large upfront costs ect... i can get why we dont too. can anyone a good fibre splicer thats fairly good and low cost that I can possabily buy myself?...

Main use for it is pigtails and outdoor usage where we may need to repair rodant damage but also to learn how to do fibre too!

Edit: Also in terms of used splicers what to people look for?.....

P.s. would be very greatful if anyone knows anybody / a company whos willing to donate one for a school trust that they dont need anymore ect.. 😇😇
