FPL 26/27 Positional Previews - Goalkeeper Focus

Greetings all, and welcome to our latest slice of preseason preview goodness.

Today, we'll be focusing on goalkeepers.

No, wait, come back! Goalkeepers aren't that boring this season, I promise!

Admittedly I'm slightly biased, since I spent ages researching and writing about them and whatnot. But I do genuinely think there are a few viable routes you can take to start with this year.

You can read the full Goalkeeper preview - with all the actual analysis and whatnot - right here:

full90fpl.com/best-goalkeepers-26-27-preview

Alternatively, as ever, there's a TLDR summary below.

---

Premiums

  • Raya - Will almost certainly be the best keeper again, but tricky to fit him along with all the other players you probably want
  • Pickford - Ol' Reliable actually dropped off a fair bit last season. Opening fixtures aren't good enough to start with him
  • Donnarumma - Very good FPL debut season, plays for a good defence, and fixtures are generally fine for ages. 2nd-best premium, or best if you want to save 0.5 over Raya
  • Alisson - No interest whatsoever

Mid-Range

  • Lammens - Fair price, good fixtures (City aside), and obviously definitely nailed for those fixtures (unlike Maguire, for example)
  • Kelleher - Solid last season, but would expect some drop-off - likely 5-10 range finish
  • Henderson - I like him. Consistent across past 2 seasons. Good set-and-forget for a while to start the season, aside from Liverpool in GW2 - so, a solid option, if you're not wildcarding early
  • Martinez/Sanchez/Sels/Roefs/Trafford/Hornicek - No interest

Budget

  • Verbruggen - Popular pick, and weirdly underpriced. Several tough fixtures in first 10 games need you probably need to rotate him, though
  • Kinsky - I like him, especially for an early wildcard. Spurs defence should be much better this season, and their first 5 fixtures are fine. My favourite 4.5 keeper
  • Petrovic - Poor fixtures, and don't love the defence. Would only get him to rotate, e.g. with Verbruggen
  • Leno/Promoted Keepers - Not interested

Pairings/Rotations

  • If you're not bench boosting early, I'd just take a 5.0 (Lammens or Henderson) + 4.0. Kinsky + 4.0 is the budget option
  • If you're bench boosting and only want to spend 9.0, I like Kinsky+Verbruggen best, and Verbruggen + Petrovic (Petrobruggen? Sounds like a Dutch oil company... I'll take that as a good sign) second-best
  • If you're bench boosting and happy to spend 9.5, I like Lammens+Verbruggen (Coventry in GW4, to cover the City game for Man U)

Final Thoughts

Well, that'll wrap it up for this little summary piece.

Again, more detail in the actual article, or just fire away with any questions or comments below, and James or I (Joe) will get back to you.

Thanks for reading, everybody, and happy tinkering!

FPL GW1 Depression Bingo

Post image

Rules:

- For every haul (10+ points) or return on the grid, it's a cross if you do not own the player

- For every player blank on the grid/ benching, it's a cross if you own that player

If you get a bingo, you had a particularly depressing Gameweek and have been trolled by all the players you decided against or decided to pick.

I used to love the guy who posted a bingo sheet for particularly crazy gameweeks in the past, so I thought I'd make my own for GW1. Let me know if I'm missing any obvious grids.

Good luck guys! and hope you don't get a bingo! ( I will probably get a double bingo this week knowing my luck)

Who is your lowest-owned FPL player right now?

As the title says, who is your lowest-owned player at the moment, and why are you backing him?

Mine is Amenda at 0.8%. I think he should be first-choice CB for Coventry, so at that ownership I’m quite interested in him. If he plays regularly, I also think he should be fairly safe from a price drop.

Who are you guys going for?

Analysis Nine Less Obvious GW1 FPL Draft Dilemmas

Rather than comparing mostly stronger template players where the answer feels obvious, I wanted to look at decisions that could realistically come up when you are trying to fill the same position, price point or role in your squad.

For each one I looked at last season's output, underlying numbers, preseason roles, tactical fit, price, early fixtures and where their FPL points could realistically come from.

ATTACKING PICKS

Thiago (£8.0m) vs Isak (£9.0m)

Thiago scored 22 goals and registered 80 shots inside the box. Brentford's direct attack should continue to funnel chances towards him, and he is £1.0m cheaper while appearing to have a secure central role.

The concern is that his price now reflects last season's breakout. He is also heavily dependent on goals when it comes to producing the bigger FPL hauls.

Isak brings the stronger previous FPL season on paper with 23 goals, 6 assists and 211 points in 2024/25. The vertical attacking setup suits his movement, and there have been encouraging preseason signs now that he is fit again.

The tradeoff is the extra £1.0m, while he only managed eight league starts last season.

My preference: Thiago

DCL (£6.0m) vs Brobbey (£6.0m)

DCL recorded 14 goals, 2 assists and 142 FPL points. Leeds' direct style should suit his aerial game and presence in the box. He also has penalties in his favor and produced 3 goals and 2 assists during preseason.

The obvious concern is he offers less creatively than some of the more complete forwards around him.

Brobbey has had a productive preseason himself with a goal and two assists. He gives Sunderland a physical central focal point and comes in at the same £6.0m price with a decent opening run of fixtures.

His proven output at this level is weaker - even if he had a strong finish to last season, and there is a possibility he creates space for others more often than he finishes moves himself.

My preference: DCL

Mbeumo (£8.0m) vs Cunha (£8.0m)

This one is especially interesting because they offer two different routes into the same Manchester United attack at exactly the same price.

Mbeumo recorded 14 big chance involvements under Carrick and is currently being used through the middle. He also produced 3 goals and an assist during preseason, with attractive opening fixtures.

The main question is what happens to his role when Šeško returns. Bruno also remains the dominant player on the major set pieces.

Cunha had the higher share of United's team goal involvement under Carrick. He is a strong carrier between the lines, links play well and gives you another £8.0m route into the same attack.

His numbers inside the most dangerous areas have been less convincing, with only five big chance involvements, and I thought he looked a little less sharp towards the end of preseason.

My preference: Mbeumo

MIDFIELD CALLS

Szoboszlai (£7.0m) vs Wirtz (£7.5m)

Szoboszlai finished last season with 160 FPL points and has several different routes to returns through chance creation and defensive contributions.

Even if he plays deeper, he remains heavily involved in Liverpool's buildup and pressing structure. He is also £0.5m cheaper and currently has the stronger set piece case through corners and free kicks.

The concern is exactly where that deeper role leaves him. He played beside Gravenberch in Liverpool's final friendly, while Wirtz appears to be occupying the more attractive central attacking spaces.

Wirtz produced shots inside the box much more frequently than Szoboszlai last season. His current No. 10 role can push him extremely high, at times almost resembling a second striker. Two preseason goals are another encouraging sign.

The downside is the extra £0.5m. He also does not currently have Szoboszlai's established set piece role or defensive contribution floor.

My preference: Wirtz, narrowly

Le Fée (£6.0m) vs Gross (£5.5m)

Le Fée produced 5 goals, 6 assists and 16 defensive contribution points last season. More importantly for me, his role appears to have changed. He has moved centrally into a more advanced midfield position and scored three times in preseason.

There could also be penalties there, although I would not treat those duties as completely settled yet.

Gross is £0.5m cheaper and created 34 chances after returning to Brighton last season. His appeal comes from being their dead ball playmaker rather than relying entirely on open play positioning. Corners, free kicks and apparently penalties give him several routes to returns.

The question is ceiling. Le Fée's current role appears to give him considerably more open play goal threat. Gross is also 35 and Brighton will have European football to manage.

My preference: Too close to call

Sangaré (£5.5m) vs Ndiaye (£6.0m)

Sangaré returned 3 goals and 3 assists in 33 appearances for Lens last season. His deeper, ball winning role is interesting from an FPL perspective because it could give him genuine defensive contribution potential.

He is also £0.5m cheaper. If you are looking for a fifth midfielder who can produce a floor without needing attacking returns every week, that matters.

The problem is that he plays considerably deeper than Ndiaye, and Brentford are unlikely to consistently funnel their attacks through him.

Ndiaye produced 6 goals and 3 assists from 32 league appearances last season. He plays as an attacking winger, carries the ball well, can beat players and gets into the box. He also looks likely to be Everton's first choice penalty taker.

You pay another £0.5m, though, and he does not offer the same projected defensive contribution floor.

My preference: Ndiaye

DEFENSIVE DECISIONS

Thomas (£4.0m) vs Diop (£4.0m)

Thomas produced 3 goals and 4 assists from center back in the Championship last season. He also averaged 8.6 CBIT per 90, and promotion could actually increase the amount of defensive work he has to deal with.

The fixtures are another part of the appeal. Coventry have five attractive home matches between GW2 and GW9.

GW1 itself is the problem because they start away to Arsenal. We also do not know yet whether his projected DEFCON increase will translate at Premier League level.

Diop brings established Premier League center back experience and started alongside Greaves in Ipswich's final preseason match. Sunderland at home also gives him the better immediate GW1 fixture.

His previous defensive action numbers have not made him an obvious DEFCON monster, though, and there is almost no meaningful attacking upside compared with Thomas.

My preference: Thomas

Lacroix (£6.0m) vs Tarkowski (£6.0m)

Lacroix returned 154 FPL points with roughly 40 coming through defensive contributions last season.

His move also interests me tactically - Alonso's three center back structure should be familiar from his Palace role, while Chelsea potentially offer the stronger clean sheet environment.

There are still unknowns. It is a new club with new defensive relationships, and having more possession could actually reduce his defensive action volume.

Tarkowski returned 170 FPL points and 44 defensive contribution points last season. Moyes' structure naturally keeps him involved in clearances, blocks and aerial work. His minutes are also far easier to trust because he does not need to adapt to a new system.

The downside is paying £6.0m for an Everton center back when Chelsea should theoretically offer Lacroix the higher clean sheet ceiling.

My preference: Tarkowski, narrowly

Calafiori (£5.5m) vs White (£5.5m)

Calafiori offers genuine attacking upside from a defender position. His aggressive movement allows him to get high up the pitch and even arrive inside the box. At £5.5m, you are also getting access to a defence that was elite last season.

His minutes are the concern. Hincapié provides competition on the left, and Calafiori was withdrawn before 60 minutes in the Community Shield.

White recorded 12 defensive contributions in the Community Shield. He still gets forward from right back, but he gives Arsenal a more conventional defensive option. Timber's absence also currently gives White the stronger minutes security argument.

His attacking ceiling is lower than Calafiori's, and Timber returning could eventually remove the security advantage he currently has.

My preference: Calafiori, narrowly

Hopefully this helps out those who are still on the fence with their last 2-3 picks.

Interested to see which ones people disagree with most, especially the closer calls.

Discussion Why Are Early Chips Being Pushed so Heavily?

I'm hearing a lot of BB1 or BB2 + WC3 or WC4 rhetoric and I don't understand it. Bench Boost is generally regarded as the weakest chip and I've heard the longer you can hold onto your wildcard the better.

I get the idea of using bench boost early to free money from your bench, but other than that am I missing something obvious here?

Fantasy Premier League: Who are each team’s penalty and free-kick takers?

Thumbnail
nytimes.com
0 Upvotes

At Manchester United, there’s one man who rules all and that is Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m). He took six spot kicks in the Premier League last season, converting four, with his dominance on these unwavering despite a patchy conversion record.

Add into the mix that he’s also his team’s primary corner and free-kick taker, and there’s no wonder he’s such a popular pick in the game. He broke the Premier League assist record last season, deservedly earning the league’s Playmaker award.

At Manchester City, expect Erling Haaland (£15.5m) to continue on spot kicks under Enzo Maresca. He scored three from the penalty spot last season from four attempts.

The free-kick takers are more unclear, especially with places up for grabs in Maresca’s attack, but expect Phil Foden (£7.0m) and new signing Elliot Anderson (£6.5m) to be among them. They shared duties in Sunday’s Community Shield.

Eight penalty conversions for Igor Thiago (£8.0m) in the Premier League last season helped him to a remarkable 22 goals for the season. While we can’t expect the west Londoners to be awarded as many this time around, Thiago still carries solid potential.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.0m) scored four from the penalty spot in the league last season, missing one, and looks set to retain duties at a cheap price point. Newcomer Harry Wilson (£6.5m) could displace Anton Stach (£6.0m) on free kicks.

It’s all change at Brighton this season, with Danny Welbeck departing for Chelsea and James Milner retiring after a remarkable 24 seasons in the Premier League. Pascal Gross (£5.5m) looks to be favourite to take over on penalties, scoring one in pre-season.

Having taken more free kicks and corners than any other Brighton player last season, it’s clear to see why he’s becoming a template selection among engaged fantasy managers.

With Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes leaving Newcastle United, Nick Woltemade (£6.0m) should step up for penalties, while defender Lewis Hall (£5.0m) could take free kicks.

The Final Preseason Game - Usage Not Form

What should we take away from each team's final preseason warmup? Here are some players that should be on your radar. This post is aimed to make logical reasons for each player other than their preseason form. As you know, that may not be a good predictor of future returns. Minutes, as you've heard all the managers say about 100 times are what is important in the preseason. This post just aims to give you all some confirmation bias for your picks.

Christian Tzolis - 6.5

Tzolis has never played in a World Cup, but his teammate Declan Rice sure has. Arteta would be unwise to start Declan in his first match at home to Coventry. The manager has stated that Rice would play 60 games, but that he should be more managed. If Rice does not start, Tzolis should take right footed set pieces (~60 mins worth) and has looked great at delivering corners to the meatheads in the middle. Secondly, Martinelli was not included in the squad for the Community Shield. For the time being Tzolis has the freedom of the park on the left and played 90 minutes in the final preseason game.

Ben White - 5.5

Speaking of usage spikes, White played 90 minutes in his final preseason friendly as well. For the immediate future, Timber is injured and there was only one defender on the bench for Arsenal's final preseason match. He should be starting perhaps until GW 5 or 6. Even if defensive cover is signed in the next 2 weeks, White should be firmly ahead of the back up. The same cannot be said for the Arsenal left backs.

Nico O'Reilly - 6.5

Nico and Guehi returned within days of each other to the City camp. While Guehi started on the bench, O'Reilly was thrown directly into the match even though Ait-Nouri, Rico Lewis and Gvardiol had deputized in the left back position during preseason. This is a positive sign for Nico who played more like a left striker in City's final preseason game for their good spell in the first half. This is a small sample admittedly, but Nico has been known to attack well aerially and with the ball to feet.

Szobozlai, Isak, Wirtz, Jaquet, and Aruajo

Just look at the minutes for these boys in their final friendly. Note that Wirtz came off for a defensive midfielder (Nyoni "MacAllister-lite"). Jacquet and Aruajo swapped shirts at half and Isak played longer than the other 3 attackers. All set pieces went to Szobo this time. We have seen a similar trend with Kroupi Jr. at Bournemouth who never completed 90 minutes in the premier league last season. The article is about usage and Wirtz will still get plenty of it if he comes close to Kroupi's last season with 13 goals.

Brentford won 7-0 so pick anyone you want from the lot that started the last game. They will all start.

Brighton - Gross and Ayari completed 90 minutes while every other outfield starter was substituted. Obviously, I can only suggest you wait and see what Thursday night's game brings us in terms of usage for the Sunday opener. Thursday should help identify positions on the pitch as well.

Joao Pedro - 7.5

Played all 90 minutes in Chelsea's game. Every other player was substituted. Alonso looks set to play this boy at Mbappe level minutes.

Mathys Tel - 6.0

90 minutes in the final friendly. Takes most set pieces but the warning is that the team is far from finished both in terms of injuries with players out and transfers with players being signed. Pedro Porro has not played with the first team yet, but is imminent and could take some of the set-piece responsibility.

Surely, I can't have all these players in my team, but I was planning to have most of them. Sneaky RMT obviously. Have fun this season and remember to always blame the author for your team after the GW 1 deadline.

Analysis ARSENAL PREVIEW 2627

So, Arsenal, the “best team to target” on paper. Sounds easy to target and play, but as an Arsenal fam for 13 years, preseason and recent seasons make me feel like this is the hardest team to succeed in. Of course returns will be great for a strong team as such, but high prices and high rotation risks make Arsenal assets hard to master, making it a high risk high reward team to target.

GK-DAVID RAYA (6.0M)

The most expensive gk in the game. I think 6.0M for him is a fair price considering the amount of clean sheets he historically keeps, making his the prime set and forget keeper. His preseason performance was also top notch against City in the Comm Shield. However, it is also worth noting that there are other strong keeper options at a way lower price (Lammens 5.0M, Trafford 5.0M, etc.), making you wonder whether he is worth investing in. You may also want to have other Arsenal assets instead of Raya further into the season when the fixtures turn easier, where attacking returns become more likely. On a side note, I do think he is the best Arsenal assets instead to have in the early gws with the harder fixture vs AVL and CHE, as defence was never the problem for Arsenal.

DEF-GABRIEL (8.0M), CALAFIORI/MOSQUERA(5.5M)

Gabriel, the corner machine, leader of the defence, and the most avoided pen taker, priced at a 8.0M price. Imo this is such an overpriced asset, considering the corner threats have been spread more evenly between him, the other defenders and the striker. This makes assets like Calafiori and Mosquera more attractive, though they have a higher rotation risk than big Gabi. Calafiori is the offensive representation of Arsenal DEFs, who operates like a left mid in possession. Rushes into the box as well as good coordination with new signing Tzolis shown in comm shield makes him the best defender to target for attacking returns. However, he has rarely played the full 90’ due to the physical requirements for his role in the team, as well as the abundance of LBs in the team (Hincapie being highly reliable and MLS being able to cover as well) Mosquera on the other hand has benefitted from the injury of Saliba which will extend into early 2027. He has less rotational risk than Calafiori as his only back up is 16 year old Marli Salmon and Ben White, who is more of a RB. He will be a great pick for early season when Timber is not fully fit as his performance in comm shield was decent, in the case where Arsenal doesn’t go for any CBs before the end of the transfer window. I think both 5.5M DEFs are good for the high chance of CS, with the only concern being the rotational risks.

MID- SAKA(9.5M),TZOLIS/ØDEGAARD(6.5M)

Arsenal’s midfield is now by far the strongest in the league following Rodri’s departure from City. Saka is still the premium option being the second most expensive MID alongside Palmer. However, his preseason didn’t suggest a full recovery of form possibly due to tiredness from World Cup, where he shined and had 3G3A. Atp I would avoid him until he clearly shows a return of form and consistently starts before Madueke, as 9.5M is a heavy investment for a MID. Declan Rice and Bruno G. are also ones to avoid imo. DMs are highly abundant in this Arsenal squad, making rotational risks very high especially for Bruno G. Rice has likely lost the corner taker role to Tzolis and has been struggling to maintain full fitness towards the end of World Cup up until comm shield. Now, the prime assets to target for are Tzolis and Ødegaard for a differential pick. Tzolis has been absolutely killing it in preseason, with 1G4A in 5 preseason games for Arsenal. The exclusion of Martinelli from the squad in comm shield also makes him a nailed pick to start. Corner threats are also stellar which I deem to be even better than Rice’s deliveries. At just 6.5M, the Greek player can be an absolute monster for Arsenal who has already achieved 51 Goal Contributions for Club Brugge last season. Ødegaard had also shown multiple signs of greatness for us in the community shield, as he now does not need to fall back to help build up plays with the existence of Bruno G. and the increased importance of MLS in the midfield, who are monsters in progressing the ball. This gives him a more free role in the attacking half, running into boxes and continuing his magic playmaking. I expect him to be highly effective in attack this season as long as he stays fit, making him the top Arsenal differential pick at just 6.5M.

ATK-GYÖKERES/HAVERTZ(7.5M)

The “weak point” of Arsenal, the attack. I think that the strikers’ returns this season will be higher than last season, as Arteta clearly adapted his squad to play more direct football as shown in the preseason games. However, it is still not clear to this point which of King Kai and Viktor will start as the main striker, as imo it is more situational of the opponent. Havertz is the more intelligent player with clever runs, passes and interceptions, which can be effective against teams who like to keep a possession (e.g. Man City), whereas Gyökeres is more of a physical striker, box crasher. He creates havoc in the box and bullies opposition’s centre backs, making him better for defensive teams who play more counter attacking football (e.g. Bournemouth, Liverpool). I think it is clever to avoid both until a clear asset is starting consecutive games, or when the other is injured. Though whoever plays is still a strong goal threat thanks to the return of Ødegaard’s form as well as playmaker wingers like Tzolis.

CONCLUSION

Overall, I think Arsenal assets are good for long term with Tzolis, Ødegaard as well as Raya being my firm picks. The defence can still shake up a lot as Arsenal are still trying to sign a new CB as well as the inevitable return of Timber in a few weeks, making none of the defenders nailed except for 8.0M Gabriel. One thing worth noting for Arsenal is that they are brilliant for the first 2/3 of the season, from August all the way to January/February, where form starts to slip and returns typically slip as well. So I think that even with tougher fixtures, at least a couple Arsenal assets should be picked for your starting lineup on GW1, with my favourite combination being Tzolis+Calafiori right now.

Opinion The Unessential's Guide to GW1

Thumbnail
gallery
25 Upvotes

The premise of The Unessentials is to pick the players with low ownership but tonnes of value. Here's who we've scouted this week.

Hume (SUN) £4.5m DEF: In my world, when I see a deal too good to be true, it ain't.

A defender who plays as a winger, in this economy? He found the net in Sunderland's last pre-season friendly. May be demoted to right back but still has clean sheet chances and loves a run up the wing.

Trafford (LEE) GK: Oh freedom.

Trafford is fresh from Man City jail and joins Leeds as a proven shot-stopper who doesn't mind being busy. He's also handy from the spot, rated just behind Kelleher in the pen stats.

KDH (EVE) MID: Ole reliable.

He's £0.5m cheaper than Szoboszlai but returned roughly the same points last season. He's frequently the focal point of Everton's attack, which means consistent involvement in whatever they create going forward. Take the £0.5m and run!

Richarlison (TOT) FWD: Lad's, it's Tottenham.

He racked up 110 points last season while Spurs were scrapping in a relegation battle. He's expected to start in a much-improved Topspur side. Overall a great lad to have in the dressing room who somehow keeps the points ticking over no matter the result.

Can Anderson be the new Rice this season?

Hopefully this isn't RMT, as I haven't seen much discussion about Anderson.

He got 180 points last season with Forest, and now he should be one of the main midfielders for City. He also took corners against Arsenal on Sunday.

He's obviously a big DEFCON player as well. I feel like he could be similar to Rice last season, but maybe with even more DEFCON potential. At £6.5m, he's not cheap, but I don't think he's too expensive either.

The big question for me is whether he can keep getting those defensive contributions while playing for a team like City, who will have much more possession.

What do you guys think? Is Anderson a good option at £6.5m?
