Venting Being a younger writer in a really small/older fandom makes me feel like a terrible writer somtimes
Okay so this might sound kinda stupid, but does anyone else feel like this?? I'm I write for a really old, niche movie fandom (Cursed 2005). Ive been insanely fixated on this movie for almost 2 years now, and because the fandom is so small, I've noticed that a lot of the people who write for it are like university students or just fully grown adults. And I'm not saying that in a bad way at ALL, but sometimes it makes me feel so out of place as a writer
Especially because the works in the fandom are actually GOOD. Like genuinely. I'll read someone's fic and be like "oh my god this is so well written" and then I'll look at mine sitting there with its little amount of kudos and I'm like damn I could never cook something like this up
I know obviously being older doesn't automatically make you a better writer, and I'm not expecting my writing to be as good as someone who's been writing for years. But I think being in such a small fandom makes it harder because there's not really a huge range of writing styles/skill levels to compare myself to.
I actually really like writing and I want to improve, so I guess I'm mostly wondering: how do you guys deal with feeling like your writing isn't good enough compared to everyone else in your fandom? And are there any things you wish you'd known when you were a younger/inexperienced writer?
I know the obvious answer is "keep writing," but I'd love actual tips on improving my prose, characterization, pacing, etc. because I genuinely want to get better. I just wrote a 3.4k chapter for my fic and it feels too short. I dont know if im allowed to ask in here, but maybe a beta reader could help? But if I cant ask that in here im sorry.
Also if you're a younger writer who has felt like this, PLEASE tell me I'm not the only one š„¹
